WP1 EREADING / CREATING NEW MEDIA CONCEPTS FOR TABLETS D 1.1.1.1B AKU ANKAN LATAAMO Donald Duck Goes Digital in Finland (beta-version) Evaluation and trial of the new concept and its usability Authors: Harri Heikkilä (Aalto ARTS), Sami Pekkala (aalto ARTS) Confidentiality: Consortium Date and status: 10.12.2013, version 1.0 This work was supported by TEKES as part of the next Media programme of TIVIT (Finnish Strategic Centre for Science, Technology and Innovation in the field of ICT) Phase 4 (1.1-31.12.2013) Next Media - a Tivit Programme Participants Name Organisation Responsible partner Sami Pekkala Aalto ARTS Responsible partner Harri Heikkilä Aalto ARTS Next Media www.nextmedia.fi www.tivit.fi WP1 EREADING / CREATING NEW MEDIA CONCEPTS FOR TABLETS D 1.1.1.1B AKU ANKAN LATAAMO 1 (16) Next Media - a Tivit Programme Phase 4 (1.1-31.12.2013) Johdon yhteenveto LATAAMON iPad- ja selainversio käynnistyivät elokuussa 2013. WP1 EREADING / CREATING NEW MEDIA CONCEPTS FOR TABLETS D 1.1.1.1B AKU ANKAN LATAAMO 2 (16) Next Media - a Tivit Programme Phase 4 (1.1-31.12.2013) Executive Summary LATAAMO was launched in August 2013 as an iPad-app and as a web app. Through Lataamo, user gets access for a small monthly fee to the complete archives (some 100 000+ pages) of digitized Donald Duck magazines. Sanoma Magazine’s Lataamo has been in collaboration with Aalto ARTS from the spring of 2013 (the Lataamo-project started in autumn 2012). When Lataamo and Aalto ARTS started to work together, the product was in a prototype phase. The collaboration would have be even more beneficial, if started at earlier stage as some decisions have been already made and implemented, but still we managed to get good results during the spring and summer. Our part of the process consisted of two phases: first we did a heuristic evaluation to find out possible problems future users could encounter and secondly, we conducted a user research in Facebook with group of 200 users to elicit user responses of the product and to build-up methods of co-creation with social media as the base of future project. Social media -research lasted for 19 days and was conducted at summer 2013. Questions were based on preliminary findings and suggestions of SMF. Sami Pekkala and Harri Heikkilä did an expert usability evaluation parallelly in May 2013. It was reported to SMF using heuristics for tablet publications created in NextMedia program as a basis for the usability problem classification. Some parts of this assessment are presented here. Particularly an issues with the sense of place and the model for navigation was pointed out and our suggestions for solving these are pictured in the next slides.
