Hawaii Foodbank is deeply saddened by the loss of Roger Godfrey. We
offer our heartfelt condolences to his family. Roger was a member of the
Hawaii Foodbank Board of Directors from 1989-1994 and then again
2003-2014. He represented a hard-work ethic, dedication, loyalty and
integrity.

The 23rd annual National Association of Letter
Carriers (NALC) Food Drive was held on Saturday,
May 9, 2015. Each second Saturday in May, letter
carriers nationwide collect nonperishable food from
postal customers to benefit community food banks.
The NALC “Stamp Out Hunger” effort is the nation’s
largest single-day food drive, with letter
carriers collecting more than 1.3 billion
pounds of food from postal customers
since 1992. Last year’s nationwide food
drive effort was recorded at 72.5
million pounds of food.
In Hawaii, during the week leading up
to the food drive, plastic bags
sponsored by the Hawaii State AFLCIO, McDonalds of Hawaii, Menehune
Water Company, Honolulu Freight
Service and United Health Care were
delivered to residences and P.O. Boxes
statewide. In addition, 210,000
announcements sponsored by the
Hawaii State AFL-CIO, McDonalds of
Hawaii, Menehune Water Company
and Service Printers Hawaii, and
support by the DOE, HSTA, HGEA,
HAIS and Aloha United Way (AUW)
were distributed to students at over
400 public, private and charter schools
across the state. Also, support from
members of the media community
promoted the Food Drive through TV,
radio, newsprint and a Public Service
Announcement (PSA) produced by Tiny Tadani.
TEAM WORK
On Food Drive day, Oahu letter carriers were busy
collecting and storing food donations at their postal
stations. In the afternoon, 14 commercial trucks and
drivers provided by Anheuser-Busch Sales of
Hawaii, Armstrong Produce, Hawaii Foodservice
Alliance, Hawaii Logistics, Hawaii Transfer
Company, HFM FoodService, Honolulu Freight
Service, ILWU-Local 142, Meadow Gold Dairies,
Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company of Hawaii, Royal
Hawaiian Movers and WDI transported food
donations from the post offices on Oahu to the
Hawaii Foodbank. A total of 20 trips were made.
Food donations were then unloaded, weighed,
sorted, boxed, palletized, wrapped and stored by
372 volunteers. By 10:00 p.m., after 6 hours of
hard work, over 213,000 pounds of food were
recorded at the Hawaii Foodbank (Oahu). A big

On Monday morning, 5
shipping containers
provided by Matson
Navigation Company
arrived with more food
donations, which had been
stored over the weekend at
the Pearl City, Mililani,
Kaneohe and Kailua Post Offices. Food donations
were unloaded, weighed, sorted and palletized by
41 volunteers. After nearly 4 hours, over 133,000
pounds of food was recorded.
Over the next 2 weeks, Hawaii Foodbank trucks
collected residual donations from post offices. A
total of over 412,000 pounds of food were
recorded on Oahu.
Statewide, the Hawaii State Association of Letter
Carriers collected over 533,000 pounds of food
that directly benefited the Hawaii Foodbank,
Maui Food Bank, Hawaii Foodbank-Kauai and

Kauai Branch News
ANNUAL FOOD DRIVE
The Hawaii Foodbank – Kauai Branch held its annual Food Drive
on Saturday, April 18, 2015. Our incredibly hard-working crew
from St. Catherine Parish Food Pantry manned the Safeway
site on Kauai. We are very appreciative for Mark Whitson,
Pantry Coordinator, who was the driving force behind this
energetic team of volunteers. Thank you to the volunteers, staff
and donors who made this Food and Fund Drive a terrific
success. This year, we collected 2,136 pounds of food and
$5,866.20 to help feed the Kauai community in need.
We were at Walmart, Safeway, Princeville Foodland, Kmart
and Big Save in Koloa, Waimea and Eleele.
NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF LETTER CARRIERS
Our warehouse was filled with food donations from the people
of Kauai during the National Association of Letter Carriers
Food Drive on Saturday, May 9, 2015 helping the needy in our
island community. 11,927 pounds of food were collected, 11%
more than last year.
We want to thank all the hard working letter carriers and all
the staff at the many post offices for their generosity in
helping us fight hunger on Kauai!
KAPAA HIGH SCHOOL FOOD DRIVE
Fred Rivera, a teacher at Kapaa High School, collected 933
pounds of food and $115.00 from his fellow teachers. The prize
for the biggest donation was a Koa framed picture of himself!
Fred is retiring this year and challenged all his co-workers to
donate through the Hawaii Foodbank State Employees Food
Drive.
Mahalo to all who contributed to this fun food drive at Kapaa
High School.

March 21, 2015 – More than 20 of Hawaii’s
culinary masters gathered at the 23,500 squarefoot Hawaii Foodbank warehouse to do what they
do best: feed our community. Hawaii’s Premier
Culinary Fundraiser, Great Chefs® Fight Hunger,
hosted nearly 800 guests for a vibrant evening in
Mapunapuna, with valet parking
generously provided by Elite
Parking.
At this annual culinary fundraiser,
Great Chefs® Fight Hunger Ilima
and Hibiscus ticketholders were
escorted to their brightly colored
tables by our talented and lovely title
holders: Mrs. Hawaii United States
Iris Ono, Miss Hawaii Petite Jenalyn
Ng, Miss Kauai USA Liane Ancajas
and Miss Chinatown Stephanie
Wang. Our Ilima Premium VIP table
purchasers and their guests – Mrs.
Joan Bellinger, The Grainger
Foundation, HFM FoodService,
HMSA and The Shidler Group –
enjoyed table and premium wine
service under the direction of Ivy
Nakayama from DK Restaurants
and Hawaii Foodbank volunteers.
Our outdoor VIP section allowed
many Hibiscus VIP guests to
purchase tables and sit comfortably
with their groups to enjoy the
cuisine and music under a special tent.
Guests chatted up local celebrity chefs at
restaurant stations throughout the warehouse
and tasted delicious creations like Hilton
Hawaiian Village Chef Michael Brookshire’s
Kona kampachi with finger lime, ikura, pickled
ogo, coriander flowers and nori chips. To
complement the cuisine, guests were served fine
wines like the Frank Family Chardonnay from
JMD Beverages and Fog Crest Vineyard Pinot
Noir from Young’s Market Company of Hawaii,
specialty beers like Leffe from Anheuser-Busch,
and fresh botanical cocktails like Joey
Gottesman’s “Nigbur Collins”, named after Pau
Maui Vodka’s Master Distiller Mark Nigbur.
Guests finished up their culinary experience with
tasty desserts like Cafe Laufer Chef Melvin
Avecilla’s key lime tart with crème anglaise and
bold coffee from Gevalia.
Throughout the evening, stages inside the
warehouse and outside under the Hibiscus Tent
featured live entertainment by jazz musician
Jazzy Jay, sultry soul singer Maryanne Ito and
her band, talented singer-songwriter Kamuela
Kahoano and the immensely popular acoustic
folk band Streetlight Cadence.
The Silent Auction featured culinary experiences
like Frolic Hawaii’s inaugural “Something New”
event, gift certificates for culinary experiences
like Ruth’s Chris Steak House, an assortment of
collectible Hawaiian cookbooks from Na Mea
Hawaii and an impressively giant bottle of The
Prisoner Red Wine from
Paradise Beverages. The
hottest bidding war was again
over a pair of Business Class
Tickets from our Travel

The trend of the evening was
the colorful ribbons attached
to house keys on the necks of
our guests all night long. One

ou never anticipate trouble
until it hits you square in the
face. And if you’re like many
families I know, you put off thinking
about the “what ifs” until they are no
longer “what ifs” and have suddenly
become, “what now?”
Y
What now? Now that our main
breadwinner has had an accident? Or
become too sick to work?
What now? Now that I’ve lost my job
and can’t seem to find another one? Or I’ve found a job, and it
doesn’t pay enough?
What now? Now that I’m old and on a fixed income and I can’t
seem to stretch my dollars till the end of the month, no matter
what I give up?
What now? Now that our rent has gone up so high we can’t pay?
What now?
Someone please help.
I have learned all too well that “what if” can turn on a dime.
Recently two members of my family got very sick. One remains
medically very fragile and one is incapacitated for life. Other family
members have rallied round our sick loved ones and we are coping.

But what if they didn’t have the kind of family support we are
able to give? What would happen to them if they had no safety
net at all?
I’ve been thinking a lot about what we — as a society — do
when we know there are people who need our help. Some try
not to think about it. Some push the “what if that were my
family” thoughts out of their minds, knowing, or hoping, it
could never happen.
But many, many people rally round, just like my family is doing.
Many of you become the safety net for perfect strangers,
because you know it’s the right thing to do.
No one is immune from trouble or heartbreak. No matter how
secure you feel or how rich you are, life has a way of
blindsiding you. And when it happens, can you depend on your
family, your friends, or the kindness of strangers to see you
through the dark times?
That’s how I see our role at the Hawaii Foodbank. We provide
the essential foods that keep bodies healthy. We offer support
that can keep hope alive. We offer the assurance that should
you ever find yourself asking, “now what?” that we will be there
with the safety net, and the helping hand.
You are an essential part of the Hawaii Foodbank's life-saving
efforts on behalf of Hawaii’s hungry. We appreciate you. And
we thank you.
