FFA members embrace concepts taught in agricultural science classrooms nationwide, build valuable skills through hands-on experiential learning and each year demonstrate their proficiency in competitions based on realworld agricultural skills. FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. Agriculture Education Agricultural education prepares students for successful careers and a lifetime of informed choices in the global agriculture, food, fiber and natural resources systems. The agricultural education program provides a well-rounded, practical approach to learning through three components: Classroom education in agricultural topics such as plant and animal sciences, horticulture, forestry, agrimarketing and more; hands-on supervised agricultural career experience such as starting a business or working for an established company; and FFA, which provides leadership opportunities and tests students’ agricultural skills. History What’s an FFA chapter? FFA was organized nationally in 1928 in Kansas City, Mo. In 1950, Congress granted FFA a federal charter, FFA operates on local, state and national levels. Student members belong to chapters organized at the local school level. Agriculture educators serve as chapter advisors. What’s a state FFA association? Chapters are organized under state associations headed by an advisor and executive secretary, often employees of the state department of education. State FFA associations conduct programs and host annual state FFA conventions. What’s the National FFA Organization? The National FFA Organization is governed by a board of directors, charters state associations and provides direction, program materials and support for local chapters and state FFA associations. Lowry won the extemporaneous speaking event with a speech on animal welfare. Baker finished second in the prepared public speaking event with her speech on urban sprawl and its effect on farmland. Bismarck FFA Magnet Cove FFA Bismarck High School’s FFA program includes about 70 students in grades nine through 12. In addition, there is an eighth-grade group, too. Beirne said that every eighth grader takes a semester of agriculture and a semester of family and consumer sciences. Bismarck FFA students are active in a mechanics program in addition to other FFA special programs. Glen Rose FFA Future Farmers of America students at Glen Rose School have been busy this year. Ag test can be downloaded from the Internet in a variety of studies. Examples of tests are Animal Science (including wild- life), Animal Nutrition, Aquaculture, Plant Science (including soils), Arkansas Floriculture, Arkansas Greenhouse Management, Forestry/Natural Resources, Greenhouse Management, Natural Resources, Nursery Landscape, Soil Characteristic, Ag Mechanics, Ag Business, Commodity Marketing, FFA/Leadership, Livestock Showing Presentation, Food Science and much more. John Jones is the FFA sponsor for the Glen Rose School. The Magnet Cove High School Chapter of Future Farmers of America currently has approximately 68 students enrolled in agriculture education classes and all of those students are FFA members as well. Last year the club also added an 8th grade class for the first time. The chapter has been busy with its community garden and other FFA activities. The members are not just busy outside of the classroom, however. The agriculture education students Ouachita FFA Heath Lee has sponsored Ouachita High School’s FFA program the entire 17 years he has been teaching there. Ouachita’s FFA club has approximately 50 members and, in addition, there are more students who take FFA classes, he added. Ninth graders have the option of taking an intro class, he said. This class is a prerequisite for the additional classes taught at the high school. Some of the other have been working hard in their agriculture classes as well. Hands-on activities in Magnet Cove’s agriculture classroom include: dissection labs, soil testing, DNA models, plant propagation in the greenhouse, welding and woodworking, as well as many other learning activities. Magnet Cove students are gearing up for their spring vegetable and flower sale. They are busy planting seeds and making baskets. The Ouachita FFA is gearing up for its big fundraiser, the greenhouse sale. “We use the greenhouse in our classes, then sell hanging baskets, Mother’s Day pots and other arrangements,” Lee said.
