Ron West
1947–2013
Ron West, Senior Marketing Director of the Cole Brothers Circus, passed away in May of 2013 at the age
of 65. West was born in 1947 in Cleveland, Tennessee to Bert and Melvina West.
West worked in professional wrestling for over 40 years and was one of the most respected referees
in the industry. After his career in wrestling, he became involved in the Cole Brothers Circus, where he
helped to touch countless lives over the course of 12 years.
Said West, “You can look at a group that comes in with the kids, the grandkids, the grandmother, and
they’ll help that grandmother into her seat. But sometime during that night, you’ll see a sparkle in her
eye, a special smile, and she’s living that young age again. It’s worth it just to watch the people leaving.
Everyone has smiles on their faces.”
West was responsible for putting smiles like these on the faces of all those who knew him and he will
certainly be missed.
Augusta Counts 1918–2013
Augusta Counts was the original dressmaker for the Cape Fear Garden Club’s Azalea Belles. She was
born September 25, 1918 in Wilmington NC to Bradley Augustus Blake and Maddie Brown Blake. Her
love of dressmaking began with the creation of a butterfly costume in elementary school. She enjoyed
sewing and eventually began making draperies and slip covers for many of the ladies in Wilmington.
Some still have pieces created by her in use.
It was in 1965 when she was asked to create a southern belle style dress for a young lady to wear as
a garden hostess. The idea took off and she began creating belle dresses for the girls hosting the garden
tours. Then in 1969 belledom became an official part of the Azalea Festival and Augusta became the
official dressmaker.
For 22 years Augusta created the fancy dresses which consisted of a 2 yd hoop and dress. She collected
fabrics, laces, and trims from everywhere. Some fabrics used were even purchased in France and these
dresses are considered very special ones today. Augusta collected so much material over the years that
there are currently 40 large tubs sorted by color that are still being used by Augusta’s daughter, Kay
Counts Godwin, to make new belle dresses. There are also two other dress makers Alma Fennel and
Debbie Scheu who began making dresses in the late 1970‘s and 1993 respectively. Augusta Blake Counts
passed on October 15, 2013 at the age of 95.

Beautiful young girls wearing hoop-skirted Antebellum
dresses first appeared as greeters in the gardens during the Cape Fear
Garden Club Azalea Garden Tour in 1969. Mrs. Harley Vance then
president of the Cape Fear Garden Club, is credited with introducing this
idea. Seven young ladies, five of whom were daughters of club members,
donned dresses worn to a southern ball or made by Mrs. Augusta Counts.
When the girls sat in the gardens that year, the concept of the Cape Fear
Garden Club, Inc. Azalea Belles was born.
The Belles have grown from that original seven to one hundred thirty-six
in 2014 Most of the dresses worn today are supplied by three approved
dressmakers, Alma Fennell, Kay Counts Godwin, and Debbie Scheu. The
Azalea Belles have truly become ambassadors for the city of Wilmington
and have come to symbolize the festival season as much as the flowers they
represent. The Azalea Belles enhance the beauty of many events during the
festival, but their primary duty continues to be as greeters to visitors in the
gardens on the Azalea Garden Tour.
Azalea Belles must be sponsored by a member of the Cape Fear Garden
Club. Priority is given to daughters and granddaughters of club members,
followed by high school seniors and juniors who live in New Hanover
County. The Azalea Belle Committee is chaired by Cape Fear Garden Club
members: Karen Smith, Chair, Linda McCall and Heda Walrep, co-chairs.

The 2014 NC Azalea Festival Children’s Art Contest,
now in its 5th year, began in October 2013 with an invitation to all area
public and private elementary schools to participate. With the prompt,
“Which traditions of the North Carolina Azalea Festival mean the most
to you?” 266 students from eight public, private and charter elementary
and middle schools in New Hanover and Pender Counties submitted
artwork by the Jan. 15 deadline. Co-chairpersons Stephanie Kraybill and
local artist Elizabeth Singletary, who created the official 2013 NC Azalea
Festival artwork, helped judge the Children’s Art Contest.
The 1st place Elementary School entry is a whimsical collage
rendering of a circus Big Top tent created by Ruthie Wainwright, a
5th grade student at Wilmington Academy of Arts and Sciences in
Wilmington, North Carolina. Ruthie says that math and art are her
favorite subjects in school, but she just enjoys art all the time. It is
no wonder because she hails from a family of artists and art lovers,
including her father, who was an amateur potter. Sandy Errante,
Ruthie’s Art teacher, says “Ruthie’s art is an expression of her beautiful
personality – open, honest, eager, and curious. She embraces her projects
with determination and allows her imagination to flow forth. All I do
as her teacher is open the door and she takes it from there!” When
asked from where the inspiration for her art contest entry came, Ruthie
answered, “It’s hard not to think of the circus when I think about the
Azalea Festival.”
The 1st place Middle School entry is a stunning depiction of a Cape
Fear Garden Club Azalea Belle elegantly encircled by a garland of
beautifully detailed azaleas. The middle school winning artist is 8th
grader Sylvia Atwood form Cape Fear Academy, also in Wilmington,
North Carolina. Sylvia upped her artistic game for the art contest this

year, receiving 3rd place in last year’s contest. She is an A student who,
along with art, loves to play tennis, guitar and hang out with her friends.
Sylvia’s Art teacher Lisa Rojek says, “Sylvia is an art teacher’s dream
student: visual, thoughtful, and extremely dedicated for such a young
age. She takes my instruction and runs with it every time, exceeding
even my expectations.”
1st place wins a $100 gift certificate from Learning Express Toy Store
for the elementary category and a $100 iTunes gift card for the middle
school category, 2 tickets to the Cole Brothers Circus, a print of the
2014 official artwork, and an assortment of Azalea Festival souvenirs.
The winners will attend the Governor’s Press Conference in Raleigh to
present copies of their artwork, and will ride in the 2014 NC Azalea
Festival parade along with the celebrity guests, Curious George and The
Man with the Yellow Hat.
2nd place wins a $50 gift certificate from Learning Express Toy Store
for the elementary category and a $50 iTunes gift card for the middle
school category, 2 tickets to the Cole Brothers Circus, a print of the 2014
official artwork, and an assortment of Azalea Festival souvenirs.
3rd place wins a $25 Learning Express gift certificate for the
elementary category and a $25 iTunes gift card for the middle school
category, 2 tickets to the Cole Brothers Circus, a print of the 2014 official
artwork, and an assortment of Azalea Festival souvenirs.
Honorable Mention artists receive 2 tickets to the Cole Brothers
Circus, a print of the 2014 official artwork, and an assortment of Azalea
Festival souvenirs.
All of their artwork will be displayed in the Community Gallery at
the Community Arts Center in the Historic Hannah Block USO building
throughout the month of April.

William Mangum
“Celebrating Life Through Art”
Celebrating Life Through Art
We are constantly encouraged to “find what we love
and make it a career.” That is exactly what William Mangum has done.
Along the way, he has utilized a multitude of personal talents and
community relationships to craft a career in one of the most challenging
of occupations- being an artist.
Using a controlled style to produce a realism that is rare among
watercolorists, Mangum achieves remarkable detail and precision, and
his saturated washes of color add depth to his soulful landscapes. Like
the artist himself, his paintings radiate a refreshing directness and clarity.
Stephen Doherty, Editor of American Artist Magazine, said:
“William Mangum is part of a great tradition of American watercolor
artists. Each time he enters his studio with paints, brushes, paper and
inspiration, he creates a lasting record of the world around us.”
Bill is a prolific artist, gallery owner, publisher, author, keynote
speaker and designer. He has traveled the world gathering inspiration
for more than 3,000 of his original works of art. The resulting creations
have garnered him countless fans across the globe and allowed him to
forge relationships with dozens of Fortune 500 companies.
His upcoming furniture collection in collaboration with Klaussner
Home Furnishings, Carolina Preserves, is designed around the artist’s
aesthetic lifestyle and international travels, and will soon bring
Mangum’s artistry into America’s homes through a whole new medium.
Never forgetting the blessings of his unique talent, Bill has advocated
for many philanthropic causes during his professional career. His efforts
have made him a true community partner as well as a tireless volunteer.
One of the causes dearest to his heart is advocating for the homeless
population. Since 1988, Bill has created an Annual Honor Card to raise
awareness and funds for shelters across North Carolina. The Honor Card
Program and Bill’s artistic efforts were recognized on the NBC Nightly
News with Brian Williams “Making a Difference” segment. To date, the
Honor Card has raised over 4.5 million dollars to meet the needs of the
indigent community across the state.
In conjunction with the celebration of the 25th Honor Card Bill has
created, he is releasing his 8th book Michael’s Gift. This extraordinary
volume speaks of Bill’s humble roots, his challenging art career and
passion for the needy. Michel’s Gift also chronicles the evolution of the
Honor Card Program and the inspiration for each of the paintings that
have been instruments in this nationally recognized program.
Bill received both his Bachelor and MFA degrees from the University
of North Carolina at Greensboro. He and his wife Cynthia have made
Greensboro their home since graduating. They have three grown
children- Alexander, Preston, and Berkley, and two granddaughtersJadyn and Gabriella and a new grandson –Samuel.
