Major Attractions
The Lynchburg area offers world renowned sites.
Appomattox Court House National Historical Park
Just twenty miles east of Lynchburg, is the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park. Here, the
fully restored original village commemorates the peace that ‘reunited our nation’ in April of 1865. The
highlight of the Park is the McLean House where Generals Lee and Grant crafted and signed the terms
of surrender, bringing an end to the bloodiest chapter in U.S. history…the American Civil War.
Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest
Just a short ten minute drive to the west of Lynchburg is Poplar Forest, Thomas Jefferson's secluded
retreat home, now a National Historic Landmark. A mature and innovative architectural masterpiece,
Jefferson designed the octagonal house at Poplar Forest during his second term as President of the
United States. Jefferson sojourned to Poplar Forest between the ages of 66-80 to rekindle his creativity,
spend time with his grandchildren and escape the crowds at Monticello. Jefferson once deemed
Lynchburg “the most interesting spot in the state.”
The National D-Day Memorial
Twenty minutes west of Lynchburg is the town of Bedford, Virginia, reported to have suffered the
highest per capita losses in the nation on June 6, 1944. Here the National D-Day Memorial pays tribute
to the Allied Forces participating in the largest land, sea, and air operation in history: the invasion of
Normandy. This 9-acre complex features a lush English Garden, haunting invasion tableau with statuary
and stylized landing scene, and the striking Victory Arch serving as a powerful, permanent tribute to the
valor, fidelity, and sacrifice of D-Day service men and women.
Patrick Henry’s Red Hill
A short drive south of Lynchburg is Red Hill, the last home of American patriot Patrick Henry. Henry
served five terms as governor of Virginia and is best known for his “Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death”
speech. Henry and some of his 17 children are buried on site at Red Hill.
Snowflex Centre
Winter sport enthusiasts can now enjoy snow sports at a year-round, outdoor snow sports slope in
Lynchburg...the Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre. This synthetic ski slope features Snowflex, the most
innovative technology in the snow sports industry. Originating in Europe, Lynchburg's Snowflex is the
only one of its kind in the United States…and the western hemisphere!
The Blue Ridge Parkway
A short 20 minute drive from Lynchburg is the Blue Ridge Parkway, “America’s most popular scenic
drive”, which provides spectacular views year-round, especially during “leaf peeper” season.
Natural Bridge
An easy and beautiful drive, Natural Bridge is one of the original natural wonders of the world and a
National Historic Landmark. Once owned by Thomas Jefferson, this marvel of nature soars 215 foot
high. Nearby you will find the east coast’s deepest caverns, descending 34 stories into the earth.
