SUNDAY, JULY 10
BROOKLYN—Smith Street—Sunday July 10 Bar Tabac bistro has been
celebrating the French Independence Day, also known as Bastille Day, for
the past 14 years. 72 teams of three people will compete on the packed sand
courts, as the music, amazing food, cold beverages, and the summer sun
all gather around what has become one of the largest Petanque Events in
North America. 20,000 attendees will once again mill about the booths of
local businesses and chow down on Bar Tabac specialties.

PÉTANQUE
In honor of Bastille Day, Francophiles in
New York play Pétanque, a game similar to
lawn bowling that originated in Provence in the early 1900s and is one of
Europe’s most popular outdoor activities.
TEAMS
• Teams at Bar Tabac: 72 teams—
36 BLUE and 36 RED teams.
• Each team must have 3 players.
Qualification Rounds
• Each team will play 3 qualification games.
• Blue teams will play against other blue
teams. Red against red.
• The games are played to 11 points and are
subject to time limit determined by the
organizer.
Playoff Rounds
• If time permits, the best 4 BLUE and 4
RED teams will qualify for the playoffs.
• The ranking of teams is based on wins,
point difference, and point average, in that
order of importance. Ties will be broken
by a random means.
• Every point counts. Make sure to report
the correct score after each round.
