“The book is ideal for those who have a solid understanding of process
control and field devices, but have no experience using wireless field
devices or working with control systems that support wireless control,”
explains Terrence Blevins, who has been actively involved in the application and design of process control systems, and co-authored the book
along with Deji Chen, Mark Nixon, and Willy Wojsznis.

Prevent nuclear power
plant disasters through
automated safety systems
NEW
RELEASE
Another Chernobylor Fukushima-like
catastrophe is inevitable
unless nuclear power
plants across the world
adopt fully automated
safety systems.
That’s the contention
of Béla G. Lipták, P.E., a
well-known automation, optimization and
safety control consultant, in his book, Automation Can Prevent the Next Fukushima.
“It’s not a question of if, but only of when
the next major nuclear power plant disaster
will occur,” declares Lipták who, as president of Lipták Associates, advises energy
firms and other companies on critical safety,
pollution and environmental issues. “The
seriousness of this ominous forecast could
be much reduced if the nuclear power
industry fully embraced automation safety.
The safety controls of the 438 nuclear
power plants that operate around the
world today are outdated and need to be
fully automated.”

A simplified explanation
of how to tune modern
control systems
NEW
RELEASE
Looking for a book
that simplifies the
tuning modern control systems? Look no
further than Tuning
of Industrial Control
Systems, Third Edition, by Armando
Corripio, Ph.D., and
Michael Newell.
In this significant update, the authors
draw upon their real-world experiences
at major oil refineries to move away from
the more academic approach of the two
previous editions, and more simply explain
how to improve control performance.
“By being less academic in approach,
and removing a lot of the mathematical
terminology, we’re able to improve understanding of how modern control systems
work and help technicians better apply
what they’re learning in the workplace,”
Dr. Corripio points out.

Advanced Control Foundation:
Tools, Techniques, and Applications
Automation Can Prevent the
Next Fukushima
Terrence Blevins, Willy K. Wojsznis, and Mark Nixon
Béla Lipták
In this book, the authors address the concepts and terminology that are needed
to apply advanced control techniques in
the process industry. The book is written
for the process or control engineer that
is familiar with traditional control but
has little or no experience in designing,
installing, commissioning, and maintaining advanced control applications. Each
chapter of the book is structured to allow
a person to quickly understand the technology and how it is
applied. Application examples are used to show what is required
to address an application. In addition, a section of each chapter
is dedicated to a more in-depth discussion of the technology for
the reader that is interested in understanding the mathematical
basis for the technology. A workshop is provided at the end of
each chapter that further explores the technology. The reader
may view the workshop solution by going to the website that
accompanies the book.
We do not know when or how mankind
will convert to a sustainable lifestyle, but
we do know that during this transition
period, the traditional energy sources will
still be needed and therefore, we must
improve their safety. I wrote this book to
show that the accidents at Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, and Fukushima could all
have been prevented if these plants were
provided with fully automated SIS safety
controls. We should remember also that the average age of the
438 nuclear power plants in operation is 29 years and that not
many cars of that age are on the road today. It is for that reason
that in this age of cyber terrorism, it is not a question of if, but
only of when the next Fukushima will occur! This book shows
that the accumulated, collective knowledge of the automation
profession can prevent most of these accidents.

Future Energy: Opportunities and
Challenges

New!
Thomas W. Kerlin
America and the world face daunting questions about how we produce energy and
how we use it. Conservation and improved
energy efficiency can help reduce energy requirements, but they cannot halt the relentless increase in energy demand. The issue is:
how can we serve the energy needs of the
growing world population while avoiding
unacceptable environmental consequences,
especially climate change?
This book addresses the capabilities, advantages, and disadvantages of the various energy production options: fossil fuels (oil, natural
gas, coal, oil sands, and oil shale), biofuels, solar, wind, hydroenergy, geothermal and nuclear (probably fission and possibly fusion).
This book also addresses options for conservation and energy
efficiency that users can employ to reduce energy consumption.
In order to evaluate the potential of the various energy production and use options, citizens must understand the basic science
that underlies each energy source and each energy use technology. This knowledge permits assessment of what is possible
and practical and, perhaps more important, what is impossible
or impractical. Fortunately, most of the pertinent science is old,
well established and, for the most part, quite simple. This science provides a framework into which one can insert real data
and draw conclusions. Without such quantitative assessments,
claims about the capabilities of various energy options must be
viewed as unverified assumptions rather than hard facts. This
book presents the essential science in an easy-to-understand,
yet comprehensive way.
This book will enable the reader to make informed decisions
about which energy production technologies to support and

Managing Industrial Controls New!
N. E. Battikha
Industrial control groups exist principally
in three business areas: facilities that
manufacture industrial control equipment,
engineering organizations that implement
control systems in plants, and plants that
use control systems to operate efficiently.
This handy reference book is written
as a guide to help train industrial control
managers and future managers on how to
manage control system projects and industrial control groups. The
book is divided into three parts. The first part sets the foundation
for managers. It looks at organizations and human resources. It
also presents an overview of industrial control systems, followed
by tools for business development and the establishment of corporate standards to guide the work of industrial control groups in
the implementation of industrial control systems.
The second part covers three basic topics: first, the assessment
of plant needs and a quantified approach to decision making;
second, the tools needed by a manager to justify the budgets
required to implement industrial control systems; and third, the
actual management of industrial control projects from project
definition and scheduling to front-end and detailed engineering.
The third part covers the post-engineering phases, including
equipment installation, check-out, commissioning and start-up,
followed by ongoing maintenance activities. The last two chapters in this part cover auditing, which is a tool that a manager
needs to identify control system implementation problems and
to measure compliance with plant needs.

Second Edition
Surely the thermocouple is one of the simplest measuring
devices ever conceived. What could be simpler than two
different wires joined at one end? The devil, as they say, is
in the details.
Whether your background is engineering, procurement, or maintenance, this comprehensive book will help
you achieve good performance with thermocouples.
Thermocouples are rugged, inexpensive, and easy to use.
However, they have significant inherent inaccuracies and a
tendency to degrade with use. Understanding the capabilities and limitations of thermocouple measurements is
crucial for practitioners.
For years, the first edition of Practical Thermocouple
Thermometry has served as the industry standard, explaining thermocouple phenomena in simple, straightforward
language. The first edition focused on how thermocouples
work; how they go bad; how to assess measurement accuracy; and how to select, install, and operate them. Readers
Whether your background is engineering,

Tuning of Industrial Control Loops, Third Edition
Michael D. Whitt
Armando B. Corripio, Ph.D., P.E., and Michael Newell
Whether you’re designing a new instrumentation and control (I&C) system, or
migrating an existing control system along
an upgrade path, you need to have a wellconceived design package—the engineering deliverables and the design process
that creates them. This book describes the
ideal design package and delves into the
business of design engineering. It provides
you with a roadmap to understanding the
design process, the elements of a successful project, the specific issues to address in a well-designed I&C system, and the engineering
products that enable practical design and successful maintenance.
As nearly $65 billion worth of automation systems near the end of
their traditional life cycle, the necessity of understanding the design process has never been more critical to engineers, technicians,
and managers. Successful Instrumentation and Control Systems
Design, Second Edition will help you achieve that understanding.
In this third edition, the authors’ aim has
been to simplify and demystify the procedure of tuning control systems based
on their successful tuning work in oil
refineries. A new chapter has been added
on the use of auto-tuning software currently available in most current computer
control systems. The authors have used
this software whenever possible to carry
out the dynamic testing of the process as
it is less disruptive of operations than doing the tests manually.

The Value of Automation: New!
The Best Investment an
Industrial Company Can Make
Peter G. Martin, Ph.D.
Industrial automation systems have the
potential to be one of the most valuegenerating vehicles available to industrial
companies. Unfortunately, not all
managers of industrial companies perceive
automation systems that way and few
industrial automation systems actually
provide the value they could and should.
There are a number of reasons for this
such as:
• The value provided by automation systems is not
well-measured;
• The value provided by automation systems is not visible;
• The capital budgeting process of most industrial companies
is flawed; and
• Project engineering teams are typically not measured on the
incremental business value of their projects.
The result is that many automation systems are undervalued
and underutilized and many industrial companies are
underperforming. It is in the best interest of all parties involved
with industrial automation systems that this situation is rectified,
the latent capability of automation systems is activated and the
value potential is realized.

When World’s Collide in Manufacturing
Operations: ISA Best Practices Book 2.0
Charlie Gifford, Editor and Contributing Author
Book 2.0 is the second collection of
public methodology white papers from
the ISA-95/MESA Best Practices Working
Group. The methodology white papers
focus on applying the ISA-95 standards to
accelerate the adoption of Manufacturing
Operations Management (MOM) systems
and the Manufacturing 2.0 Architecture
(Mfg 2.0) approach. There is a focus on
how to build a Manufacturing Transformation Strategy where
manufacturers discover that using MOM systems combined
with continuous improvement methods dramatically accelerate
transformation and time-to-benefit. The business benefits from
optimizing operations are realized by structuring plant workflows
in ISA-95 models as a common definition foundation for Mfg
2.0 architecture. This enforces effective data structure, definition,
integrity and governance across manufacturing applications. Book
2.0 explains how to implement ISA-95 workflow applications
in Mfg 2.0 to execute operations tasks through the MOM and
physical process levels while coordinating them to streamline
plant operations and align those operations with ever-changing
supply chain processes. A CD-ROM version is also available.

With the release of the ISA-TR84.00.07 technical report on the
performance-based design of fire and gas detection equipment in
the process industries, risk-based techniques for detector placement have become prevalent. This handbook provides a thorough
overview of the FGS design lifecycle presented in the technical
report. In addition to the discussion of the design process, the
handbook also provides valuable appendices that contain data
for FGS risk analysis, risk grading procedures, and a discussion of
mapping techniques used to verify the achievement of the newly
defined coverage targets.
Safety Instrumented Systems: Design,
Analysis, and Justification, Second Edition
Safety Profiles for Real-Time EthernetBased Industrial Automation Networks
Paul Gruhn, P.E., CFSE, and Harry Cheddie, P.E., CFSE
Alberto Elia, Luca Ferrarini, and Carlo Veber
This revised best-seller is ideal for instrumentation and control system engineers in the
process industries who are responsible for
designing, installing, and maintaining safety
instrumented systems (SIS). Engineers,
managers, technicians, and sales professionals employed by end users, engineering
firms, systems integrators, and consultants
can all benefit from the material presented
here. The book addresses the increased
realization that today’s engineering systems—and the computers
used to control them—are capable of large-scale destruction. When
even a single accident could be disastrous, the luxury of learning
from experience no longer exists. This book is a practical how-to text
on the best-practice design, analysis, application, and installation of
safety instrumented systems.
Part of the ISA/O3neida series, this book
discusses network systems in industrial
automation and their features related to
real-time and functional safety requirements. The basics of standard Ethernet
are introduced, specifying the Open
System Interconnection (OSI) reference
model layers and identifying Ethernet’s
drawbacks. Clarification on the requirements and the solutions adopted by the
presented communication protocols is
also addressed. Real-time capability is defined with regard to
communication within safety-related systems, underlying the
strict correlation between time performances and external requirements. Finally, the specifications of the safety profiles of five
communication protocols (namely PROFIsafe, Ethernet Powerlink
Safety, SERCOS III Safety, EtherCAT Safety, and Ethernet/IP Safety)
are investigated.

Safety Integrity Level Selection—
Systematic Methods Including
Layer of Protection Analysis
Edward M. Marszal and Eric W. Scharpf
This book, a winner of the Thomas G. Fisher Award of Excellence, describes a systematic method for selecting safety integrity
levels (SILs) for safety instrumented systems
(SIS). This method emphasizes accounting for existing layers of protection. This
method ensures that the maximum return
on risk reduction investments is achieved.
This reference demonstrates the application
of quantitative risk analysis techniques and
tools to the problem of safety integrity level selection. The authors
distill essential theory into a format that the average control systems
engineer can quickly apply. This is not a generic theoretical dissertation, nor a comprehensive treatment of the topic of quantitative
risk analysis. It is a focused process for applying simple, yet powerful, tools of quantitative risk analysis specifically to the problem of
selecting safety integrity levels for safety instrumented systems.

to understanding the design process, the elements of a successful project, the specific issues to address in a well-designed I&C
system, and the engineering products that enable practical design and successful maintenance. As nearly $65 billion worth of
automation systems near the end of their traditional life cycle,
the necessity of understanding the design process has never
been more critical to engineers, technicians, and managers.
Successful Instrumentation and Control Systems Design, Second
Edition will help you achieve that understanding.
In this third edition, the authors’ aim has
been to simplify and demystify the procedure of tuning control systems based
on their successful tuning work in oil
refineries. A new chapter has been added
on the use of auto-tuning software currently available in most current computer
control systems. The authors have used
this software whenever possible to carry
out the dynamic testing of the process as
it is less disruptive of operations than doing the tests manually.

Bottom-Line Automation, Second Edition
Peter G. Martin, Ph.D.
Joseph D. Patton, Jr.
This newly revised edition helps today’s
manufacturing companies face the challenges of a global marketplace where
every part of the operation must become
more efficient to enhance the bottom
line. Based on the results and conclusions of an applied research project
of process manufacturing operations
directed by the author, Bottom-Line Automation presents an overview of more
than 30 years of industry trends, pointing out the strengths
and pitfalls of each. The book also explains how manufacturers selected automation technology suppliers for state-of-theart technological features in their systems rather than for the
improvements the technology could offer the manufacturing
operation. New topics in the book discuss the economic optimization of industrial assets.
This book emphasizes the concepts of
preventive, predictive, and reliabilitybased total maintenance and total quality
management and continuous improvement. It provides a look at technological
advances and the cost advantages of
investing in maintainability. Topics include
maintainability program planning and

Managing Industrial Controls N. E. Battikha
New!
This handy reference book is written as a
guide to help train industrial control managers and future managers on how to manage
control system projects and industrial control groups. The book is divided into three
parts. The first part sets the foundation for
managers. It looks at organizations and human resources. It also presents an overview
of industrial control systems, followed by
tools for business development and the establishment of corporate standards to guide the work of industrial control groups in
the implementation of industrial control systems.
The second part covers three basic topics: first, the assessment
of plant needs and a quantified approach to decision making;
second, the tools needed by a manager to justify the budgets
required to implement industrial control systems; and third, the
actual management of industrial control projects from project
definition and scheduling to front-end and detailed engineering.

The Value of Automation: New!
The Best Investment an
Industrial Company Can Make
Peter G. Martin, Ph.D.
Industrial automation systems have
the potential to be one of the most
value-generating vehicles available to
industrial companies. Unfortunately, few
industrial automation systems actually
provide the value they could and should.
Several reasons for this include: the
value provided by automation systems is
not well-measured; the value provided
by automation systems is not visible;
the capital budgeting process of most industrial companies
is flawed; and project engineering teams are typically not
measured on the incremental business value of their projects.
The result is that many automation systems are undervalued
and underutilized and many industrial companies are underperforming. It is in the best interest of all parties involved with
industrial automation systems that this situation is rectified, the
latent capability of automation systems is activated and the value
potential is realized.

Automation Can Prevent the
Next Fukushima
New!
Béla Lipták
We do not know when or how mankind
will convert to a sustainable lifestyle, but
we do know that during this transition
period, the traditional energy sources will
still be needed and therefore, we must
improve their safety. I wrote this book to
show that the accidents at Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, and Fukushima could all
have been prevented if these plants were
provided with fully automated SIS safety
controls. We should remember also that the average age of the
438 nuclear power plants in operation is 29 years and that not
many cars of that age are on the road today. It is for that reason
that in this age of cyber terrorism, it is not a question of if, but
only of when the next Fukushima will occur! This book shows
that the accumulated, collective knowledge of the automation
profession can prevent most of these accidents.

America and the world face daunting questions about how we produce energy and
how we use it. Conservation and improved
energy efficiency can help reduce energy requirements, but they cannot halt the relentless increase in energy demand. The issue is:
how can we serve the energy needs of the
growing world population while avoiding
unacceptable environmental consequences,
especially climate change?
This book addresses the capabilities, advantages, and disadvantages of the various energy production options: fossil fuels (oil,
natural gas, coal, oil sands, and oil shale), biofuels, solar, wind,
hydroenergy, geothermal and nuclear (probably fission and possibly fusion).

were finally provided an easy-to-understand, yet comprehensive, learning resource for anyone concerned with
temperature measurements using thermocouples.
Building on the first edition, authors Tom Kerlin and
Mitch Johnson have updated the second edition of Practical Thermocouple Thermometry to include the latest in
thermocouple technology. They called upon their 60 plus
years of collective experience in theory, research, teaching,
manufacture and real-world applications to produce this
second edition. Updates include:
• real-world case studies demonstrating solutions of
thermocouple problems;
• properties and performance of all commonly used
thermocouple types;
• innovative applications of thermocouples;
• expanded information on thermowell selection for
required reliability;
• and much more.
Practical Thermocouple Thermometry
Readers
