SCL EDITOR’S LETTER
Happy New Year to all of you!
I hope that you all enjoyed your vacation as much as I did. The challenge I
have to overcome, and I am sure many among you face a similar problem, is
that a part of me is still back in the Austrian Alps! The best thing is, that
part of me doesn’t really want to return, however, I am pretty sure that I
shall get over it and quickly adjust to the cruel reality of everyday.
As you have already noticed, this month’s cover illustrates the Belfry in
Mons. This UNESCO World Heritage site has been decorated with 1,000
new lights which will shine for miles around for the next year as the Mons
2015, European Capital of Culture programming takes place in the city. The
opening ceremony to launch the year long series of events will take place on
January 24th. The invitation is for the city of Mons from 6pm until late at
night and is described as a wandering party without a particular itinerary.
If you would like any additional information all you have to do is follow the
link on the homepage of the Shape2day website. www.shape2day.com
In addition to the cultural events Mons will be offering this year, we would
like to remind you of some the choices that MWR offers on base. Every
Thursday, Friday and Saturday afternoon, just outside the B3’s - Events
Centre, a new food choice has arrived. The renowned Belgian frites are now
available every week, to go or to enjoy in the Sports Bar.
Another addition to services is a breakfast menu available over the weekends
at the Pizza Bowl; and don’t forget the Shape Club offers breakfast during
the work week.
In the educational field, enrollments for the Spring Session (February - June)
are now available in Shape Language Centre, so why not give it a try?
Please be sure to check our SHAPE2Day website for information about hours
and changes including the B3’s Sports Bar and The Sports and Fitness Center, which was, due to reduced manning, obliged to alter its operating hours
as of 5 January 2015.
Well, these were a few of my thoughts and suggestions for the beginning of
2015. Morale and Welfare Branch will continue trying to satisfy your needs
and wants. May all your wishes will come true!

British Section in top 1% of schools By Mrs C Rawlinson
Each year in England league tables are produced showing how
well pupils perform in tests at the end of Year 6. The test results
of students in the British Section of SHAPE International School
rank the school in the top 1% of primary schools nationally.
The children in Year 6, (10 –11 year old pupils), take examinations
known as SATs (Standardized Assessment Tests) every May.
These are externally marked and are used as an indicator of
school performance as Year 6 is the pupils’ last year in a primary
school. For the second successive year, the children’s results
have been in the top 1%. This cohort were ranked 28th out of
17,000 Primary Schools which is, to be absolutely accurate, in
the top 0.2% of schools!
“I am delighted that last year’s cohort of Y6 pupils achieved so
highly; “I have written to each student to pass on my congratulations for this significant achievement,” commented Mr Bucknill,
Headteacher. “Praise must also go to the staff team for working so
hard in ensuring the children not only succeed and attain such high
standards, but also enjoy their learning and their time in school. “
Lt Col Alistair Birrell, Chairman of the School Governance Committee, congratulated the school stating, “This is indeed excellent news and confirms what we all already know. The British
Community in SHAPE is very fortunate to be served by such an
outstanding school.”
There are inevitable controversies about using exam results to
compare the effectiveness of schools, but this should not detract
from recognising that such a strong performance is extremely
commendable being amongst the very best student test results
in England. Well done and congratulations to all!
SIS Italian Section School Christmas Show and Greetings Courtesy Italian NMR
On Friday 12 December 2014, Major General Giuseppe Spinelli
(Italian NMR), Ms. Stella Naddeo (Italian School Headmistress),
Mr. Jose Pittellioen (SIS Common Services Director), along with
all the teachers, students and their parents celebrated the forthcoming Christmas in the SHAPE Chapel.
The Italian students under the direction of their teachers sang
traditional Christmas songs in English and French, and recited
poems and rhymes in Italian. This was a fantastic opportunity
to exchange Christmas greetings in a warm and informal way.
A big “Thank You” must also go to the contributing parents who
provided a delicious buffet that was devoured by all following
the ceremony.

Cans and Coins for Share A Meal Appeal 2014 (SAM) at the Canadian
Section By Heather A. Mace, Principal – SIS Canadian Section
The Canadian Section is a small school with 55
students from Canada, U.S., Britain, Spain, and
Lithuania. In our school, the Big Five forms our
common language: five big things we can do daily
to build a strong school:
• Think – Try - Do
• Use your imagination
• Stay active and healthy
• Be yourself
• Take care of others
for others with our event. Both our Recipe Book and SAM donation boxes were part of the market. Those who visited our
market were asked to bring a donation; there was no other entry
fee.
For the Recipe Book, Canadian school families submitted holiday recipes. Each family told a story about their submission
(i.e, why it was a favourite, where it came from). Parent and
staff volunteers helped with design and production. The school
donated the materials.
A design contest was held late fall. Student submissions were
creative, it was hard to choose; but 6 pieces of artwork from
various grades were selected. These appear on the front and
back covers and inside the recipe book.
As the holiday season approached, we wanted to connect our
Big Five with supporting SAM. We chose 2 ways: food donations and a recipe book.
For food donations, we used our House System. Our school
is divided into four houses: Mons, Charleroi, Ath, and Tournai.
Students and staff earn house points through positive character
and school activities.
A friendly rivalry was set up with four house donation boxes.
Each donation was counted with points awarded to the respective house. We collected over 300 donations! On average,
each student or family donated 5 items.
At the Canadian Christmas Market, we also wanted to link care
Farewell Meeting Written by LTC Miroslaw Ochyra (POL – A)
On 20 November, the Polish National Military Representative
at SHAPE, Colonel Jerzy Jankowski, officially said goodbye to
Colonel Andrzej Solarz who completed his military services at
Allied Command Operations as Assistant Chief of Staff – Joint
Engineering Division. He was thanked for his high level of performance, dedication and professionalism.
Col Solarz is returning to the General Command of Branches of
Armed Forces in Poland to continue his career.

The Recipe Book was available at the Market for a donation of
5 euros. Samples of the recipes were available at the Canadian
Bake Sale table. This brought the recipes to life. We sold all our
recipe books, and we reprinted another 20! In total, we collected
over 500 euros! All proceeds went to SAM.
According to Collier, success is the sum of small efforts - repeated day in and day out. Students were proud as their house
donations grow, and as artwork appeared in the recipe book.
More importantly, students and staff showed how to help others during the holidays. The collective efforts of our students
and our small school to show how we care for others are our
success.

Italian Christmas Market

What better way to get into the spirit of Christmas and prepare
for the festivities than with a touch of Italian style?
This is exactly what numerous members of the SHAPE community did on Saturday 6th December, in a warm and joyful atmosphere when the Italian Community of SHAPE held its annual
Christmas market.
The day was predominantly organized
by IWIS (Italian Women In SHAPE )
who poured their hearts and souls into
creating a very special and atmospheric event enjoyed by all who attended.
Their dedication and attention to detail created a truly special occasion
and provided a real taste of the “Dolce
Vita.”
tice boards, key holders and that’s just to name but a few.
In addition to all the fantastic creations to decorate the
house, IWIS also had prepared a cornucopia of products
to tantalize the taste buds that are typical of the various
regions of Italy including famous liquors such as limoncello, cream of limoncello, cream of coffee liquor and liquirizia, a delicious liquorish flavoured liquor. There were
homemade cakes and biscuits and no one can forget the
mouthwatering lasagna and tiramisu that were a winning combination for many people at lunch time. So it is possible to say
that the SHAPE community members who attended the market
really enjoyed the true flavours of Italy.
In the months leading up to the opening, IWIS collaborated with various
sponsors and friends of the community to prepare everything
that was required for the market. This included working tirelessly to create a vast range of beautiful, traditional, handmade decorations and gifts including, Christmas wreaths, hand sewn tree
decorations, Christmas baubles, photo frames and albums, no-
Throughout the day, children had fun and enjoyed the activities
run in the kids corner operated by the Italian teenagers. Later
in the day, the Italian Church Choir performance added the final
touches to the joyous and memorable occasion.
The hard work of everyone involved in the preparations paid
off in the form of a very successful day. From the moment the
doors opened at 10:00 to when the final stand closed, the room
buzzed with members of the SHAPE community who came to
support and enjoy the event. In fact, several of the stands were
sold out by the early afternoon.. All the funds raised from the
event are being donated to charity. Sincere thanks go to all who
attended the event and showed an interest in Italy and its products.
70th Anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge By Henriette De Lair (NLD - Civ)
“During the weekend of 12-14 December 2014, the 70th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge was celebrated in the city of
Bastogne. Again it shows that the past has not been forgotten
and both the Belgium and American Armed Forces remember
the fallen soldiers.

The opening of the Exposition “From Texas to Bastogne” at
the Bastogne War Museum was also during this weekend and
Henriette De Lair, manager of SHAPE Trips and Tours had the
honor of being invited to the openings ceremony. “To see and
hear the stories of these young men coming to liberate and give
their lives for a foreign country, no not only a country, but a
whole continent, is always very emotional.”
The exposition is running until 2016 in Bastogne.

Share a Meal Appeal 2014 (SAM 2014)
A Big Thank You to the SHAPE Community by Jean Vanderwal, Share-A-Meal, Chair
The SAM 2014 Council, would like to
express a big “thank you” on behalf
of the charities, who, together with
your effort, helped us to provide much
needed support again this year!
Family names are given via the International Chapel
Centre Charity Assoc. (IC3) and each ASBL has been
personally visited so that SAM can continue to share
something extra at Christmas.
E.So.P (or Entraide et Solidarité Protestante, in
Cuesmes), and Societe de St Vincent de Paul (in
Leuze) provide their poorest family names for community sponsorship.
SAM began in 1985 when Mr. Tommy
Temple, (who was the Ecumenical
Charity Liaison then at the SHAPE
Chapel Centre) was approached by
a Canadian teacher who offered to
provide 10 boxes of food for families
in need. She challenged him by saying, if he
could provide her with 10 families in need,
she would provide the boxes! And with this,
Share a Meal, or SAM, was born!
Whereas, L’Utopie (formerly Poor Clares, La Louviere),
Les Ouvriers du Coeur (formerly Notre Dame de la
Croix, Peruwlez) and Societe St. Vincent de
Paul Pays Vert Ath (Maffle) are helped by SAM’s
Grocery Program.
SAM Appeal 2014 was helped by many community partners in a number of different events.
We’d like to acknowledge the following organizations for their generous support:
CARREFOUR on SHAPE and AFN for helping
us with our Kickoff
Andrews Federal Credit Union (Chievres) and
Friends of SHAPE food collection The International Schools (7), Grandma’s Attic, SHAPE
Golf Assoc.’s Bake Sale, Canadian Section
Cookbook/Bake Sale, International School
(@Canadian Christmas Market)
Michelle Howarth (@October Lunchtime
Classical Concert)
US Boy, Cub and Girl Scouts’ for their SAM
Weekend (@ US Commissary), The German community (and NMR), IC3 (International Chapel Centre Charity Association).
Twenty-nine years later, SAM, is now a NATO
Group 2 activity, and to this day still runs
its Appeal, from October-December each
year, through the efforts of a Council of International volunteers. This year, our SHAPE/
Chievres/Daumerie communities sponsored
130 families in two charities by packing boxes of food and presents. Monetary donations that
were received, helped to continue SAM’s “Grocery
Program”, (now in its 3rd year), where 1,000€ is
given to each of three other charities by meeting
their Director’s at their local Colruyt store who then
buy food to support their larger communities. Gift
certificates are also purchased from the Delhaize,
then were given in units of ten euros by family size,
to each of the 130 families that were sponsored.
All five charities are registered with the Belgian
government as an “A.S.B.L.” or “not for profit” organization.
Fundraiser
Written by LaLaine Carbin & Carl Carbin, OES Camilla B. Lockhart #68
A great way to spread Christmas cheer is to provide a welcome,
time saving service which provides relief to someone’s busy day
of shopping.
For instance, during the holidays, most people are challenged to
find time to do their gift shopping, let alone get everything wrapped
up in time for giving, so the members of Camilla
B. Lockhart #68 were able to provide a helping
hand to the SHAPE/Chievres Community with
our holiday gift wrapping station.
This event helped weary shoppers save time
and energy by providing gift wrapping services
including a space to wrap gifts themselves, as
well as the ability to have the gifts wrapped away
from the prying eyes of their loved ones or significant others.
This fundraiser was one of the
many programs Camilla B. Lockhart #68 either leads or participates in throughout the year to
not only provide a public service,
but also support the community
where we feel it is needed. Other events we are involved with
include: Month of the Military
Child Ice Cream Social, Make6
SHAPE Community Life 22 January 2015
A-Wish, SHARE-A-Meal, Toy drive, clothing donations, National
Breast Cancer Foundation fundraiser, help for the local community
events with IC3 and other organizations, as well as any other
cause we feel we can contribute to.
We were glad to be of assistance to the wonderful patrons that
took advantage of our gift wrapping services and look forward to doing more for the SHAPE/Chievres community.
The entire Camilla B. Lockhart #68 would like to extend
a special thanks to Mrs. Emilenes Brevard for her assistance during our event.

Exceptional gifts and donations for St Nicholas and Christmas 2014
By Tommy Temple (GBR - Civ)
SHAPE American High School under the supervision of Barbara Humphrey. Their night at the Don Bosco

the evening came when they had to

It was a night to remember and the

These happy photographs show what
can be done when a group of international good people from SHAPE and
Chievres get together and decide to
give a helping hand to people less fortunate than themselves.
It is now thirty-one years since the

the years.

ndoubtedly you have heard about
“Mons 2015, European Capital
of Culture.” But what exactly
does that mean? It means the European Union has selected Mons, Belgium, through an application process
in competition with other countries, to
organize a series of cultural events to
take place over the year appointed. It
is an honor and great opportunity for the
city to grow culturally and economically, as
well as work to promote the city’s image as offering diverse, cultural experiences via organized events and
assorted programs.

On y Va - Lisbon,
Portugal
By Heather Tuttle (USA-Civ)
W
hen my husband suggested we visit Lisbon, Portugal over the holidays, my first thought was that I
had my hopes set on somewhere I can lounge on a
beach with warm sun, a beach and a good book in my hands.
I pitched that idea to him, but was quickly over ruled by the
inexpensive airfare and hotel options going to Lisbon offered
over the holiday season.
As I try to do with most trips we take, I did some research. I
grabbed the Top 10 book and set out to see what I could learn
about Lisbon prior to visiting? Figure out what I wanted to
see? What would our family enjoy? Lisbon became more interesting to me the more I learned. It became more enticing
with each photo I saw. The skies were always blue, palm
trees were abundant, and the architecture of the buildings
drew me in.
I learned Lisbon, as we see it
today, is mostly a rebuilt city
after suffering a devastating
earthquake followed by a tsunami and destruction by fire
on 1 November 1755. Most
of Lisbon was lost, including
about one-third of the population, many historic buildings, documents, art and
important monuments. The
impact of the earthquake was
felt socially, economically,
philosophically, scientifically and politically throughout
the world and is still studied
today.
Entrance of the Military Museum
Efforts to rebuild the city
started almost immediately, and within a year the
city was cleared of the
debris and a plan was
in place for the city.
I had no idea the results of the redesign
and rebuild of the city
would leave me feeling like I had visited
a city centuries older
than it really is. I was
in awe of the beauty,
the thought given to
small details, and the
intricacies in those
details. One inter- Military Museum
esting detail to note
is that the mosaic
stone work that makes up much of the public squares
and walkways throughout the city comes from the resulting rubble of the earthquake.
One of our first places to visit was the Military Museum.
It houses what is considered one of the largest collections of artillery; extensive displays of swords, armor,
guns, historic uniforms, and canons. There is also a
wonderful display of arts, statues and finely crafted

items. The displays are carefully arranged and informative.
Everyone will learn something about Portugal’s history with
a visit here.
We spent a full day in the
Belem region including a
visit to Belem Tower. The
tower is a symbol of the age of
discovery and an image synonymous with Lisbon. It is
a UNESCO World Heritage
site and pictures cannot do it
justice. Built in 1515, it is a
majestic fortification jutting
off the coast and served as a
guard tower to Lisbon’s harbor. You can tour the interior
and enjoy the sights off the
walls overlooking the water.

While in Belem, we visited
the National Coach Museum, the Monument to the

The National Coach Museum
houses an impressive collection of historical carriages!
There are gold gilt, wood

standing today is actually a
replica of the original which was destroyed a few years after
it was erected as it was intended as a temporary structure for
the 1940 World Exhibition. The structure as it stands today is
50 meters tall and shaped like a ships bow. It is significant as
the port of Belem was the starting point for many explorers.
The statues that don the monument are historic figures from
the age of discovery including Henry the Navigator, Vasco de
Gama, Ferdinand Magellan and many more. On the ground
in front of the monument lies a gift from the Republic of South

Africa; a compass rose and medieval European map made from a variety of marbles.
We made a quick visit to the Museum of the
Combatant. This museum takes the visitor on
a journey of military actions/conquests Lisbon
has been involved in since 1933, and honors
the soldiers who served Portugal in various
campaigns throughout the world. Directly
in front of this museum is the Monument to
the Honor of Overseas Combatants, complete
with an eternal flame guarded around the
clock.
an awe inspiring entrance and what
remains of the castle after the 1755
earthquake. The views from the castle walls are breathtaking! Children
can run round the courtyards, you
can walk along the precarious walls,
snap amazing pics, and enjoy the
local artisans working within the
walls.
Overview of Coach museum
The Tile Museum was a remarkable collection
of tiles, as well as a history lesson on the role
tile has played in the history of Lisbon. Tiles cover the exterior and interior of homes around the city, and the museum
showcases a wide variety of styles of tile and ceramic work.
Most notable for me was the Great Lisbon Panorama before
the earthquake of 1755. This is a massive collection of blue
and white tiles depicting Lisbon as it was prior to the devastating earthquake that changed the face of the city forever.
The Belem region was filled with so much, and we missed a
few of the larger sights including the Cloister of Jeronimo’s
Monastary, the Maritime Museum and the
Design, and Fashion Museum. You could easily spend a full three days just in the Belem
region of Lisbon.
Sights we also saw in this region
were the Lisbon Cathedral (the oldest building in the city), the Military
Museum, and the archeological remains of a Roman Theater.
Lisbon may not have been the beach vacation I had envisioned,
but it easily surpassed all my expectations! The people were
remarkably friendly (and most spoke English), the food was
flavorful, and public transportation - be it metro, bus or tram
- was easy to navigate making access to sights across the city
easy to get to without necessitating a car or taxi.
I would welcome another trip to Lisbon to see the sights we
missed this trip.
Now being the parents of a teenage girl and
tween girl, we find it necessary to allow them
to visit a shopping district or center when
we travel, and Lisbon did not disappoint.
We worked our way to the area of Parque
das Nações. We visited the Vasco de Gama
Shopping Center, were in awe of the futuristic
architecture of the Oriente Station, walked
along the waterfront, rode the cable cars that
travelled the length of the site.
Finally, a real highlight for me on this trip
was the Castle of St. George. This castle can
be seen from almost everywhere in the city
and it is truly majestic! Once you have made
the hike up the hills of Lisbon which take you
through historic districts, past shops, restaurants, and churches, you are rewarded with

Strasbourg, France
More Than Just the Capital
of Christmas
By Heather Tuttle (USA-Civ)
I
recognize we are past the Christmas Market season at the
time of this article, but this particular Christmas Market is
worthy of a brief article, mostly because if you plan to go in
2015, you will need to plan ahead and reserve your hotel room
before hotels are too booked!
There is much to do in Strasbourg than just the Christmas
Market, and being a 5 hour
drive from SHAPE makes this
a nice weekend getaway.
The Strasbourg, France Christmas Market boasts itself the
oldest in Europe and considers
itself the Capital of Christmas.
I’ve been to my fair share of
Christmas Markets, but I really wanted to see the original.
This year the market’s theme
was Belgium and there was an
The Cathedral Notre
Dame juts out of the middle of the city (and the
market) with exquisite
grace and power. The
interior is magnificent
and open to the public.
The Grande-île neighborhood is filled with
twisty roads lined with
cafes and shops. The
houses along the lanes
are colorful and timber
framed. I felt like I had
walked back in time! We
managed to find a lovely pizza place tucked in
a corner which we all
agreed was some of the best pizza we had ever eaten.
The region is known for its pottery, and the shops were
insanely busy with shoppers looking for that perfect piece.
The Alsace region is famous for Kugolof (Kugelhopf)- a
sweet, raisin filled yeast bread that is prepared in a bundt
pan type of pan. These
pottery pans are unique
and special in their design, and can be found
everywhere.
The bakeries and confectionary stores had delectable window displays
causing us to crave a
sample. They must take
hours to prepare the windows!
Other sites to see in the
region, which we didn’t
get to, include the Musée
Alsacien, Museum of
Modern & Contemporary Art, the European
Parliament, the curch of
St. Thomas, Musee des
Beaux-Arts, and the Grand Mosque.
entire village set up to showcase
the charms of Belgium. I had
also read that the market was
divided up into 10 villages, each
with a unique theme.
We combined this weekend trip with a stop in Bastogne on our way home. The new Bastogne WWII
Museum had recently opened and was well worth
a stop, but that is another article.
So, with map in hand, euro in
my wallet, my family in tow,
I embarked on a visit to the
Strasbourg Christmas Market.
Craft stalls were abundant,
prices were reasonable, and
the festive feeling was worth
the trip.
Strasbourg itself is a quaint,
medieval city with narrow
roads, and a fairy tale appearance. I quickly found that while
I had come for the market, I was
more interested in the array of unique pottery shops, linen
stores, and other things to do in the city and surrounding area.

any of you are familiar with the SHAPE International
Women’s Club (SIWC). You may have read about us in
the SHAPE Community Life Magazine, or have been
to one of the luncheons, or the Welcome Coffee. However, many
of you may not be aware that the SIWC has been around for
a long time, albeit at first, under another name.
The Club was founded in April 1967 as the SHAPE Officers’
Wives’ Club (SOWC), and the first function was a luncheon held
in what is now known as the Liège Room, and was attended
by approximately 30 to 50 ladies.
the different Nations which feature the culture, cuisine, and
creativity of the Nation hosting the event.
It has been a great season so far. In September the SIWC
Board hosted their traditional Welcome Coffee attended by
many members and guests. We were able to visit one another
as well as talk with representatives from various SHAPE clubs
and activities that are available to us.
In October the SICW Board hosted a NATO Friendship Luncheon. The USA ladies opened their hearts to us by inviting
us to their Luncheon in November. A wonderful time was had
by all and we even ended up dancing to “YMCA”. We joined
the NMR ladies for a lovely Christmas Luncheon. It was a
very nice way to start and celebrate the season!
These events were just the beginning as there is more to come.
The following month the attendance was such that the SIWC
had to use half the big dining room. The luncheons became so
popular and attendance became so great, that for the luncheon
in June that year, the entire dining room was required.
On the 27th of January the Spanish Ladies are hosting not a
luncheon but a Ladies Night!
This has been the case ever since! Starting as a small network
of nations in 1967, the SIWC has grown tremendously over the
last 47 years, with an attendance of 200 to 300 ladies for each
event. In the spring of 2008 the Club changed its name to what
you now know as the SHAPE International Women’s Club.
The aim of the SIWC is to promote friendship and the exchange
of ideas among the women of SHAPE’s large and varied international community, in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
They do so by having monthly gatherings at the SHAPE Club.
They are a blend of SIWC Board sponsored events like the
Welcome Coffee and Luncheons, and luncheons sponsored by

Sports, Health and Fitness
Happy two thousand and fifteen sports fans!
I hope that you had a fun, restful and even sports filled holiday
period last month. I certainly did. Fed up with the less-than-impressive December weather, I decided to spend the Christmas
period across the ocean and down
the east coast in Florida. A good
friend has a condominium in the
Miami-Fort Lauderdale area, so
that was my hang-out for two and
a half weeks. The area has just
about anything a sportsman or a
sports fan could want and I certainly took advantage of this fact.
Obviously I have been living in
Europe for too long because I was
really disappointed when I realized that there were no football
games going on while I was there.
There is football down in the Sunshine State, or as we like to
say in the USA, “soccer” but it’s more of a spring/summer sport
so the season had already ended before I got there.
They did have the other football, the American version (where
they play with their hands) and I do enjoy a good ol’ NFL (National Football League) game, so did make it to one. I have
been a fan of the Miami Dolphins since I was a very young
and enjoyed their two Super Bowl victories in the 1970s and
a season where they did not lose a single game. And that was
the last time they were crowned champions. I have been a long
suffering fan for so long and was hoping for a better season
than last year. Actually, in the short term, I was just hoping
for a good game against the Minnesota Vikings on that Sunday
afternoon. I was not disappointed. The game was thrilling,
exciting, amazing and I was baking in the afternoon.
The game started at 1300 hours but we decided to get there a
couple of hours early in hope of being able to park close enough
to the stadium where we didn’t have to take a bus from the very
large parking lot to the stadium. Also, it was very crowded and
although it was only a half hour drive to the stadium, we also
had to sit in the car for about an hour waiting to be directed
into a parking spot. But still, we made it in plenty of time.
A big part of going to an American football game in the USA is
the ritual of tailgating. This is basically coming
to the game hours early, parking your car, opening your “tailgate”, taking out your grill and
food and cooler full of beer and just basically
having a mini-party. You meet up with your
friends, throw some steaks and burgers on the
grill and drink beer as you throw the football
around or play cornhole. (You’ll have to ask an
American about the game of cornhole.)
We entered the stadium, Sun Life Stadium (formerly Joe Robbie Stadium) about an hour before game time and
got down close to the field to see some of the players warming
up with the media circus going on around them and took some
photos before heading to our seats in the “nosebleed” section.
If you find yourself in the USA and decide to catch a professional
football game, or even an NBA or NHL game (basketball and
hockey), do yourself a favour and don’t go hungry. You will pay
a ridiculous amount of money for very mediocre food and very
awful American beer with its 3% alcohol. Go to a nice restaurant or diner before the game and enjoy a very large meal that
will cost you less than a couple of hot dogs and a Coke inside
a stadium or arena. What I didn’t really take notice of until
it was pointed out to me by my Slovak wife at a New Jersey
Devils’ hockey game and then an Orlando Magic basketball
game back in the spring was that a lot of the fans don’t seem
to care too much about the game but are only there to eat.
We noticed around the time that the first quarter of the game
had already been played that many people were just arriving
at their seats with their nachos and hamburgers, buckets of
popcorn and liter cups full of Coca Cola. (OK, so it was more
like quarts than liters.) But I digress.
There was the usual pre-game excitement with cheerleaders and
lots of fanfare as the Dolphins’ players came out of the tunnel
one by one to the sounds of crowd cheers and pyrotechnics as
each one of their names was called out. When things settled
down the game started and oh, what a game.
The “Fins” went down 14-0 before they fought back and took
a lead of their own. This didn’t last very long however when
they went through a span of 11 seconds where they just couldn’t
do anything right. In those 11 “game” seconds the Vikings
managed to score a pair of touchdowns thanks to some sloppy
Miami play.
(I must point out that although a football game is just an hour
long, divided into four quarters of 15 minutes; from the start
to the finish the entire game with time-outs, etc. take approximately three hours.)
Then the comeback began. The Dolphins scored again, and with
very little time left to the game, they blocked a punt that ended
26

up in the end zone, meaning two
points and a 37-35 victory. Both
teams were playing for nothing but
pride since neither had a chance of
making it into the play-offs. They
certainly did entertain the fans on
that hot Floridian afternoon!
The following day was another
sports day. Actually it was the following night. Now I know
that it is crazy to play ice hockey in the Sunshine State of
Florida or really anywhere south of the Mason-Dixon Line
(basically those states south of Pennsylvania). But they do.
There are National Hockey League (NHL) teams not only there
but also in Texas, Southern California and even Arizona. If
you know your American geography, you’ll know that these
are very hot places.
That night the Florida Panthers were hosting the Pittsburgh
Penguins. The Pens are a legitimate team because it does snow
in that city and water does turns to ice. The venue for the game
was the BB&T Center, another arena with a corporate name.
Quite a nice place though. It just felt surreal and very odd to
be in a t-shirt walking past palm trees knowing that soon I
would see a hockey game.
Unlike with the Dolphins game, my wife, being a Slovak, was
very familiar with this game so I didn’t have to explain what
was going on. But again, there was a constant coming and going
of spectators during the game, disappearing from their seats
and reappearing 20+ minutes later
with a beer or food. I was just so
tempted to shout, “Just watch the
game! You can eat later!”
Again, we were lucky to be able to
see an exciting game although a
few of the Penguins’ players were
left back in Pittsburgh because
they had the measles. Fortunately
their star player, Canadian Sidney
Crosby recovered in time to make
the trip and play. He even had an
assist on the first goal of the game. There were in fact six goals
scored with the regulation time ending in a 3-3 draw. Then
came the penalty shootout. To be honest, I had never seen so
many missed penalties. In the end, and rightly so, the home
team scored for the victory. Finnish winger Jarkko Ruutu was
the only guy to actually convert his penalty.
have a look around though and also see the
horses being exercised. This was a pity
because I haven’t been to see the ponies
run for some time now even though there
is a race track (hippodrome) just down the
road from SHAPE. In the Fort Lauderdale
there are actually a few tracks, including
a dog racing one.
The whole area is pretty much sports obsessed. I noticed while
driving to the beach that they also have the International Swimming Hall of Fame and also the Fishing Hall of Fame.
Although it was great to be in Florida and enjoy hot sunny
December days, I was quite happy too when our plane landed in Brussels. I could soon watch live proper football. The
teams take a winter break and get back to business as usual
on January 18th. As I write this, that date has not yet arrived
but I will miss the RAEC Mons game regardless because with
SHAPE’s favorite Norwegian, Tor Overland and Leeds United’s
biggest fan, Roy Brunning, I will be heading over to the UK that
weekend. We’ll fly into Manchester very early on the 17th and
then take the train to Leeds to see United play Birmingham
City. Roy promised me that Leeds would win, so we’ll have
to wait and see.
As you will soon discover; the SHAPE magazine will now only
be published once a month. Because of this, I will make the
columns a bit longer and hopefully continue to share with you
interesting sporting people and information about local sports.
Other than the Leeds game, I will also be
heading down to Rome for Six Nations rugby,
so will report on that next time. Until then,
take care and see you soon.
Next on my agenda was a trip to the local casino, Gulfstream
Park, which also had a horse racing track. Unfortunately when
I went there it seemed that the horses were on vacation because
on those couple of days, there were no races. I did manage to

Realistic Expectations
by MAJ Joycelyn S. Constantino, Chief of Preventive Medicine
Happy New Year! The first day of the New Year is the
most common day to make resolutions. This is the day that
many vow to make healthy changes, venture out on new
adventures, take chances, and reach for higher goals. Take
a walk outside and you may find yourself with many other
people you have never seen taking strides
to increase activity. The number one
resolution made for the New Year is to
lose weight but statistics show that only
8% are successful in achieving their resolution. Unrealistic expectations may be
the culprit to the low numbers that find
success in weight loss. When it comes to
making healthy lifestyle changes, many
expect to see visible changes in a short
period of time. If change is not seen,
then one can become discouraged and eventually jump ship.
What can a person do to ensure success for the resolution he
or she makes? Making realistic goals, scheduling/planning
and having an accountability partner are ways to help make
change a success.
Whether it is losing weight, eating healthier or making change
in your lifestyle having realistic goals is the first step. Often
times New Year’s resolutions have high expectations with
little room for mistakes. For instance, if weight loss is your
resolution, you might expect to see big changes when you go
on a very restricted diet and going to the gym for an hour or
more every day. You might even be able to keep this tempo
up for the first week, but eventually you will hit a bump in
the road. Hitting the gym hard may cause you excessive
soreness making you lose motivation to workout. Or you may
go out to socialize with friends and find yourself off track from
your diet. There are many things in life that can throw you
off course when your goal is extreme or unrealistic. Instead
of trying to lose 20 pounds during the first month (which is
dangerous and unhealthy) reach for 5-10 pound weight loss.
If the gym is something new to your routine, take small steps
and increase intensity or weights as you get stronger. Making
changes in your diet can also be tough. Instead of trying to
completely change everything you eat, slowly substitute your
unhealthy choices with healthier ones.
At first you may be hard charging when tackling your New
Year’s resolution but making change can be difficult when you
are short on time. After some time and as you lose motivation,
you may start making excuses that there is no time to get to

the gym. Eating or making a healthy meal might become
time consuming and you may opt for the quick prepared
meals that may not be the most nutritious. Scheduling your
workout on your calendar or planner helps to keep you on
track. Do exercise during the time that you are most likely
to workout, in the morning or evening,
or even during lunch. Create a plan for
what you will do on the days you workout
and write down what you do. Cooking can
take a lot of time, but creating a menu for
the week will help. Make large batches
of meals and portion them out for freezer
ready meals. Planning your workouts
and meals helps to make manageable
changes towards a healthier lifestyle.
Once a realistic goal is made and a plan is set, motivation
is key to continue and maintain that drive you initially had
when the resolution was made. Having an accountability
partner is a great way to ensure that you stay on track to
reach those goals. A partner helps to keep you motivated
and provides that extra push (or competition) to make you
strive for a better you. Find a partner that has similar goals
such as going to the gym most days out of the week, running
a marathon, or just wanting to become a healthier person.
Don’t worry if you and your partner are not at the same fitness
level, it is the support that helps for both ends.
The statistics of New Year’s resolutions can greatly improve
if the expectation is realistic. There is nothing wrong with
starting with a small reachable goal; this only helps with
motivation and helps a person strive for more. One day of
not working out or having a “cheat meal” doesn’t completely
destroy all the gains you’ve made in the week or two or more
prior to straying from the plan. Falling off track doesn’t
mean you’ve failed; you just get back on your feet and keep
going. “No time” cannot be used as an excuse if you plan and
schedule your meals and workouts. Visualizing your goal
and having a concrete plan can help lead you to success. And
finally, surrounding yourself with like minded people or those
who share the same goals can help support and motivate you
to the new you. Following these simple tips can turn those
unrealistic goals to reachable goals. Just keep in mind that
you are stronger then you were yesterday for each day you
make a healthy choice.

Cervical Cancer Awareness Month
© Cancer Research UK 2014
How common is cervical cancer?
• Cervical cancer is the twelfth most common cancer in
women in the UK and the third most common gynaecological cancer after uterus (womb) and ovary
• There were around 3,100 new cases of cervical cancer
diagnosed in the UK in 2011, that is more than 8 women
every day.
• Over three-quarters of all new cases of cervical cancer
cases are diagnosed in women aged 25-64.
• Cervical cancer is the most common cancer in females
under 35 in the UK.
• Cervical cancer incidence in Great Britain decreased
by nearly half between the late 1980’s until the early
2000s, but the last decade has seen an increase in rates
in younger women.
• In Europe, around 58,400 new cases of cervical cancer
were estimated to have been diagnosed in 2012. The UK
incidence rate is 12 lowest in Europe.
• Worldwide, more than 527,000 women were diagnosed
with cervical cancer in 2012, with incidence rates varying
across the world.
• Cervical cancer survival is higher in women diagnosed
at a younger age. Women under 40 years of age have
survival rates of almost 90%.
What causes cervical cancer?
• A woman’s risk of developing cervical cancer depends on
many factors, including age, genetics, and exposure to
risk factors (including some potentially avoidable lifestyle factors).
• High-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the
main potentially avoidable risk factor for cervical cancer,
linked to an estimated 100% of cervical cancer cases in
the UK. Some other factors may relate to cervical cancer
risk partly because they are related to HPV.
How many women die from cervical cancer?
• Smoking, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and oral
contraceptives cause cervical cancer.
• Around 920 women died from cervical cancer in 2012 in
the UK, that is more than 2 every day.
• ‘Low-risk’ HPV types may relate to higher cervical cancer
risk, but evidence is unclear.
• More than half of cervical cancer deaths occur in • women
aged between 25 and 64.
Cervical screening and vaccination?
• Cervical cancer death rates have decreased by 71% in the
UK since the early 1970s.
• In Europe, around 24,400 women were estimated to have
died from cervical cancer in 2012. The UK mortality rate
is ninth lowest in Europe.
• Worldwide, more than 265,000 women are estimated to
have died from cervical cancer in 2012, with mortality
rates varying across the world.
• The NHS Cervical Screening Programme was set up in
1988 by the Department of Health.
• Cervical screening can prevent around 45% of cervical
cancer cases in women in their 30s, rising with age to
75% in women in their 50s and 60s, who attend regularly.
• HPV vaccination in schools was introduced into the national immunisation programme in 2008, for girls aged 12-13.
How many women survive cervical cancer?
• Around two-thirds of women with
cervical cancer survive their disease for five years or more.
• More than 6 in 10 women with cervical cancer survive their disease
for at least ten years.
• Cervical cancer survival is higher
in women diagnosed at a younger
age. 9 in 10 women diagnosed with
cervical cancer under age 40 survive for at least five years.

Marken, Volendam & Edam (NL)
Thursday, March 5
Price: €45
Marken was separated from the mainland after a
storm in the 13th century. A long period of isolation
followed for the community earning a living with fishing. The typical houses and traditional costumes are
reminiscent of the past. We will have a coffee stop
here and take time to wander around. Volendam’s
day-to-day life is concentrated around its harbour.

Since fresh water gradually mixed in with the
seawater of the former “Zuiderzee”, its trade
today mainly concerns smoked eel and tourism. We’ll have a short stop here before going
to a restaurant (Van der Valk) for lunch. This
is not included in the price and you are free to
choose your meal. In the afternoon we will be
exploring Edam. The most obvious association
with the name “Edam” is its cheese, but there
is more. Wandering the old streets, you will
discover its authentic 17th-century architecture
in well-preserved gables, squares and bridges,
silent reminders of a rich past in the ship building industry. And last but not least: no visit to
this part of Holland would be complete without
visiting a cheese farm and a clog maker. Come

The International Jewish Center offers a weekly
educational program in English for children from
10:00am - 12:30pm. This is a great opportunity to
meet and befriend other international Jewish children
and families. We introduce students to Hebrew,
prayer, religious traditions, and the modern Jewish
experience. We begin with a Tots class for children from 3 years, and we provide Jewish education through Bar/Bat Mitzvah with an emphasis on
creative expression. The school is led by our Israeli
Head Teacher and our British Rabbi and staffed by
dedicated and experienced teachers.
