A MESSAGE FROM MISSEY TRUDELL OF THE MACC GOLF CLASSIC COMMITTEE:
Hello fellow Mason Area Chamber members! As you may have read in Aaron Fiedler's letter

DART BANK EMPLOYEES RAISE
MONEY TO PURCHASE BOOKS FOR KIDS
Each Dart Bank location sponsors two fundraising events a year, usually one in the
winter and one in the summer or fall. Mason and Holt have done bake sales. Grand
Ledge collects their funds from donations from customers and employees. The
HLC/Frandor location does a 50/50 raffle. Proceeds buy books for children.
The books are labeled "From the Dart Bank Employees" and distributed to area
libraries (Mason, Holt and Foster are part of CADL-Capital Area District Library
system) and Grand Ledge. This year the combined efforts of all the Dart Bank
employees raised $978.30 and they purchased 209 books. They were distributed as
follows: 109 to Mason, 50 to Holt, 25 to Foster, and 25 to Grand Ledge.
Books for kids are used for prizes and incentives for children and parents that
complete the Early Learning and Pre-Readers program goals. Cheryl Lyons is the
Head Librarian and Mari Garza is the Youth Services Librarian at the Mason Library
who received the Mason book donations from Dart Bank. Their goal is to keep kids
reading all year.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The Mason Public Schools Board of Education is seeking input from district residents
regarding the recent school funding proposals that were on the May 3, 2016, ballot.
The voters of the Mason Public School District were presented with two school funding
proposals:
1. Building and Site Sinking Fund (passed)
2. $79,845,000 School Bond Proposal (not passed)
Mason Public Schools values the community's feedback and is currently seeking their input
via an on-line survey as they look to provide the best opportunities for Mason students and
plan for the future of the school district.
The survey is available at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MasonPS_May2016. In
addition, residents can find a link to the survey on the school website at
www.masonk12.net. The survey will close at noon on Monday, June 27, 2016.
All responses are anonymous and will be reviewed by district administration and the Board
of Education.

Tri-County Regional Partnership
This past week, a major regional partnership was announced marking
the first time that the three county governments in the tri-county
region, the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce (LRCC) and
Michigan State University (MSU) have formally agreed to work together
to address priority issues in the region. LRCC, the MSU Center for Local
Government Finance and the Boards of Commissioners in Clinton, Eaton
and Ingham Counties have signed a Memorandum of Understanding
(MOU) designed to foster collaboration between the tri-counties to
support regional economic growth.
Officials envision a regional collaboration in which participants develop
collective strategies for addressing regional priorities. Among issues
likely to be identified are concerns over infrastructure needs,
developing the Michigan Avenue Corridor, and working with state
officials to modify the state revenue sharing formula for local
governments.
In the coming months, the real work begins on collaborating with the
Capitol Caucus (state officials representing the tri-county region) on
putting together an agenda that focuses on the Greater Lansing region.
Stay tuned!

Mason Area Chamber of Commerce Offers Volunteer Opportunities
The Mason Area Chamber of Commerce hosts many community events each year. Mason's Spring Fling
Courthouse Show, Thursday Night Live Courthouse Concerts, Mason Holidays Light Parade, Down Home Days
Courthouse Show, and Independence Day Parade are examples of those events.
Recently, the Chamber has extended the opportunity for those who live and work in the Mason area to become
more involved in their community through volunteerism. Individuals and families can now spend a few hours
from time to time helping to favorably impact the quality of life of all people in the Mason area.
Another example of participation is volunteering for a shift or two at the Mason Area Chamber of Commerce
Visitor Center booth. The Chamber has such a booth at the Ingham Country Fair, Women's Expo, Sun Dried
Music Fest, Outdoor Expo, and other events.
Examples of volunteer tasks include setting up a canopy, passing out pamphlets, taking photos, answering
questions, and saying hello to passersby. There are other ways you might assist before and after events. Get
the benefits of meeting new and interesting people, while still enjoying our local cultural, educational and
recreational events with co-workers and neighbors.
While volunteering in a visitors center booth during sponsored events, people from Chamber member
businesses and organizations bring promotional material about their company or group with them. That way,
they have the opportunity to talk about the Mason area, and also their own business or group. It is a great way
to encourage people to come back again to visit the Mason area after an event is over.
On the rare occasions that community volunteers don't have an affiliation with a Chamber member business or
organization, they might consider associate status with the Chamber. You could pay a fifty dollar per year fee
for that status. Now, the Chamber is allowing individuals, couples, and families to volunteer just two or more
hours of time each year, to become eligible without paying the $50 fee. This status works especially well for
residents who are now retired.
If you are interested in volunteering with the Chamber of Commerce, just stop by their office located at 148 E.
Ash Street across from the downtown Ingham County Courthouse. The office and Visitors Center is open Monday
through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Fill out their volunteer form and get more involved in your
community. For information, please email masonchamber@masonchamber.org or call (517) 676-1046.

Find Waldo Locally in Mason!
Event dates: Friday, July 1, 2016 - 8:00 AM to
Wednesday, July 27, 2016 - 5:00 PM
Event Headquarters: Bestsellers, 360 S. Jefferson,
Mason, MI 48854
Where's Waldo? In Mason, of course! The famous
children's book character in the striped shirt and
black-rimmed specs is visiting twenty-six local
businesses (Mason Area Chamber of Commerce
members) throughout our community July 1st 27th. Find Waldo Local is a great summer vacation
activity and a wonderful way to support local
businesses and the Shop Local movement in our community, including these
partners: Bestsellers Books & Coffee Co, Kean's Store, Maple Street Mall, Dart
Bank, Darrell's Market, The Vault Delicatessen, Mason State Bank and many
more!
Anyone who wishes to participate can pick up a "Find Waldo Locally in Mason!"
passport, which contains the names of all the participating sites, and get their
passport stamped or signed for each Waldo they spot. Collecting store stamps or
signatures at twenty or more businesses will entitle diligent seekers entry into a
grand-prize drawing on July 27th, with the top prize being a six-volume deluxe set
of Waldo books. This year, participants can also #ColorWaldoAndWin: when they
share a completed coloring sheet of Waldo on Instagram, they'll be entered into a
drawing to be one of five lucky winners of a deluxe prize pack.
Waldo is the creation of Martin Handford, whose entertaining drawings of crowd
scenes swept the world in the late eighties. Since then, the Where's Waldo? books
have held a cherished spot on bookstore shelves the world over. There are now
over 65 million Waldo books in print worldwide, and they've been translated into
over thirty languages. An entire generation has grown up searching for Waldo and
his cast of wandering companions.
In celebration of Waldo's longevity and popularity, his American publisher,
Candlewick Press, is once again teaming up with the American Booksellers
Association and two hundred and fifty independent bookstores across the country
for some hide-and-seek fun to encourage communities to patronize their local
businesses. There is no charge to participate, and the hunt lasts July 1st-27th. For
more information about hunting for Waldo in Mason call Bestsellers Books &
Coffee at 517-676-6648.

Consumers Energy Recognized by Michigan Veterans Affairs
Consumers Energy is being recognized for its dedication to employing
military veterans, being named a silver level Veteran-Friendly
Employer by the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency.
"We are a better, stronger company when we recognize and bring in
the talents of a diverse Michigan workforce. That includes people who
have served our country honorably in the military," said Cathy
Hendrian, Consumers Energy's vice president of human resources. "We
are proud to be honored by the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency, and
we remain committed to providing opportunities for our country's
military veterans."
Consumers Energy joins eight other Michigan companies that are
certified as silver-level employers by the state agency. "Well-respected
employers like Consumers Energy are an integral part of making sure
Michigan veterans get the opportunities that they deserve," said retired
Army Command Sgt. Maj. David Dunckel, employment analyst for the
Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency. "This type of collaboration between
private sector employers and state agencies helps put Michigan in the
top tier of states when it comes to taking care of our vets."
Employers are recognized for efforts to recruit and retain military
veterans. One example of that is Consumers Energy's new Natural Gas
Boot Camp. The energy provider collaborated with the Michigan
National Guard and Power for America to create the program to train
qualified military veterans and provide them with job opportunities.
Consumers Energy's recruitment efforts also include outreach to
veterans organizations, while its Veterans Advisory Panel provides
support to veterans who work for the company. Three company vice
presidents are military veterans.
"Military veterans bring unique abilities and experience that are
valuable to our work," Hendrian said. "We will continue working to
recruit and retain qualified military veterans to strengthen our
company and our mission to serve Michigan's communities."
Consumers Energy, Michigan's largest utility, is the principal subsidiary
of CMS Energy (NYSE: CMS), providing natural gas and electricity to 6.7
million of the state's 10 million residents in all 68 Lower Peninsula
counties.

Final Note:
Continuing a 44-year tradition, the Mason Area Chamber of Commerce publishes its
"MASON in Motion" printed and mailed newsletter near the end of each month. This
hard-copy newsletter has information about Chamber events and programs, new
Chamber members, news from member businesses and organizations, and more - in a
short four-page format. The several insert pages included in the newsletter each
month are designed to be removed for easy sharing or posting within a business or
organization. For this reason, the Chamber has decided to continue distributing this
newsletter in the conventional manner with no opt-out. This also maintains value for
limited advertising.
Advertising inserts are just $100 per insertion to reach 450 key decision-makers in
the Mason area. This newsletter is mailed to all contact people for Chamber members,
Chamber volunteers, and select stakeholders. A .pdf copy of the newsletter is also
available to all the same day it is delivered by the post office at the Chamber's website
www.masonchamber.org. Deadline is the 20th of the month for all submissions. Items
are included as space is available and submissions are edited for space and consistency
of the publication.
Since August of 2006, the Chamber also publishes a mid-month "MASON in Motion
UPDATE" newsletter electronically. This e-mailed newsletter is forwarded to all who
have submitted their e-mail addresses to the Chamber, provided they are associated
with a Chamber member, are a Chamber volunteer, or are a select stakeholder. A link
to the archive on the website for the .pdf copies of the printed and mailed "MASON in
Motion" newsletter is included in the UPDATE. A .pdf copy of this UPDATE newsletter
is also available to all at the Chamber's website www.masonchamber.org under the
"Newsletters" tab. Deadline is the 10th of the month for all UPDATE submissions. All
items submitted are included, subject to minor editing for publication consistency.
It is the intention of the Chamber to limit broadcast e-mails to those who have email addresses submitted to the Chamber to 24 times per year at most. Of course,
those who are Chamber leaders and volunteers get much more frequent information emailed to them.
