News and Editorial
Promoting tourism in the
region
In an effort to promote the region’s
year-round tourism potential, the
Chamber has produced a DVD
focusing on area attractions for use
on the Cross Sound Ferries. The
goal, said Chamber President Tony
Sheridan, is to stimulate awareness
of what eastern Connecticut has to
offer.
“Many people view New London as
simply a place to get on or off the
ferry, but we want them to realize
this is a great place to stay and visit,”
Sheridan said. “Eastern Connecticut
has something for everyone.”
The Chamber received a grant from
Northeast Utilities to produce the
DVD. Look for it around Labor Day on
Long Island and Block Island ferries.
Chamber to hold political candidate training
The Chamber of Commerce
of Eastern Connecticut
believes that the region’s
social and economic fabric
is highly dependent on a
healthy competitive political
environment. To this end, the
Chamber is concerned with
the increasing number of local
and state political offices that
go uncontested on an annual
basis. If this trend is allowed to
continue, it could potentially result
in a negative impact on the region’s
ability to ensure a healthy social and
economic environment for future
generations.
Based on these concerns, the
Chamber has organized a nonpartisan Candidate Academy for
individuals interested in running for
Breakfast with David Whitehead
political offices –
the first of its kind
in the region.
Session topics
are: “A Passion for
Public Service,”
focusing on the
choice to enter
the public service
field, the party
endorsement
process, fundraising and reporting
requirements; “The Campaign,” focused
on planning and running a successful
campaign; and “I Won, Now What?”,
focused on media relations, press
coverage and servicing the public.
The Academy will be held September 16,
23 and 30 from 6-8 p.m. at the Chamber
office, 39 Kings Highway, Gales Ferry. The
cost for the 3-session program is $50. Visit
www.chamberect.com for an application.
For more information, call 860-464-7373.

Hospital President and CEO, David
A. Whitehead, for speaking at the
