Halloween Family Fun and Nighttime Trick or Treat!
FALL 2011
Volume 2 Issue 3
All Together Now . . .
By THNA President Andy Frahm
I love this time of the year. Fall color, football and cool autumn nights. And even though I’ll miss summer, as we draw
near to the end of another year, the holidays always remind me how much I have to be thankful for. Among those things
are the laughs I share with friends and family, a Brewers post-season and a great place to call home.
I’m also thankful for all the wonderful neighbors I’ve met over the last year. I want to thank all of the Tosa Heights
Members that took the time to talk with me on the phone over the past few weeks to share their insights about how to
further strengthen the quality of life for those in our Association and our neighborhood in the coming year.
You’ll have an opportunity to hear those ideas and to share your own at our annual All Member Meeting next month.
We encourage both current and potential members to attend this meeting to give us even more insight into what Tosa
Heights residents are looking for in an association. You can also meet our board members, sign up for membership and meet
other neighbors who are interested in making our neighborhood a better place to live. This year’s meeting will be held on
Saturday, November 5th from 9:30-11:30am at Northwest Baptist Church, 4737 N. 92nd Street.
One of the concerns that many members shared in our conversations was neighborhood safety. With that in mind, I’ve
invited Officer Don Semega from the Wauwatosa Police Department to come and speak at this year’s meeting on Safety and
the Neighborhood Block Watch program. I’ve also invited Alderman Jason G. Wilke and Alderman Craig Wilson to join
us, and they are trying to make room in their schedules to attend. I hope you’ll take advantage of this unique opportunity
to participate in the All Member meeting.
We have lots of other great events happening this year, including TGIFs, Family Halloween Fun, a Packer outing and a
Holiday Round Robin. I look forward to seeing you at all of these great events!
Halloween Family Fun and Nighttime Trick or Treat!
Calling all ghosts, goblins and zombies! Get ready for spook-tacular fun and fright-tastic treats
on Saturday, October 29th. Join THNA members and neighbors from 4-6pm on Fiebrantz Street,
between 96th and 97th. We’ve blocked off the street to enjoy games, crafts, yummy treats and lots of
fun for kids of all ages!
Activities planned include ghouly games, plant stake decorating, cookie decorating, a scavenger
hunt, shrinky-dink pins, Halloween picture frame decorating, foam pumpkin crafts, and Halloween
jewelry making. Hot dogs and McDonald’s orange drink will be provided along with chips and
apples with caramel dip (first-come, first serve). Please bring a dish to pass and any other beverage of
your choice.
At 6pm we’ll have a costume parade through the neighborhood, and then kids can join
in the Tosa Heights Nighttime Trick or Treat fun from 6:30 to 8:30pm! Houses wishing to
participate in trick or treating should turn on their porch lights.
Volunteers are needed to help with all of the great activities during the celebration. Please
contact Angela Davidson at 414-313-2058 if you can help.

THNA Recipe Corner:
Curried Chicken & Apple Soup
By Tricia Chartier
Vegetable Spray
1 cup chopped onion
1 cup shredded carrots
1 cup chopped celery
1 medium cooking apple, cored and chopped
4 cups hot water
1/4 cup flour
2 cups water
3 tsp chicken base (recommended: Better Than Bouillion)
1 tsp curry powder
1/2 tsp pepper
1 1/2 cups skim milk
2 cups chopped or shredded chicken
Spray soup pot with cooking spray, place over medium
heat until hot. Add onions, carrots and celery. Saute until
tender, then add apples.
Slowly combine 4 cups hot water, chicken base and flour
in a bowl, using a whisk to stir well. Add to vegetable mix,
stirring well. Stir in 2 cups of water, curry powder and
pepper. Cover and bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer
5 minutes or until slightly thickened. Turn down burner to
low and then stir in milk and chicken. Cook over low heat,
stirring constantly, until thoroughly heated. (Note: once
you add curry, do not use a plastic spoon to stir as it may
discolor). Yields 3 quarts.
Sunshine, Food and Fun!
Lots of fun was had at the 3rd Annual Triangle Picnic on
September 17th. A clear, crisp day allowed neighbors to socialize
and enjoy burgers and brats on the grill, along with the great side
dishes contributed by attendees. Once again the Wauwatosa Fire
Department graciously brought over an engine for the kids to
explore. Thanks to Patrick McNally for coordinating and to all of
the THNA members and residents for attending!
TGIFs in Full Swing Every Month!
On the last Friday of each month, you can find a fun group of
Tosa Heights residents at our TGIF casual get-togethers. The host
just has to open their doors and neighbors bring their own drinks
and an appetizer to share, making it easy and fun for everyone!
Thanks to the Espinosas, Keenans, Cannestras and Oberdorfs for
hosting the last few months. October 28th we’ll be at the Chartiers,
4139 N. 96th, and November 27th finds us at the Frahms, 9839
W. Palmetto. If you’re interested in hosting in 2012, contact Andy
Frahm at 262-894-0155 or email info@tosaheights.com.

Just for THNA Members – A
Members Only Website Area!
We’ve created a special area for Tosa Heights
Neighborhood Association Members only on our website
(www.tosaheights.com). You can have access to our newly
created Neighborhood Services page, to a Neighborhood
Forum section and to all Board Meeting minutes. To gain
access to the Members Only area, click on the Register Link
in the top right hand corner of the site and fill out the form
there. Once we verify your membership, we’ll send you a
confirmation email activating your account and giving you
access to this secure section.
The Neighborhood Forum can be used for discussions
with other residents, offerings (i.e. equipment for sale),
and suggestions for Association groups, activities, etc. The
Service Directory page provides a list of teens and adults
in the neighborhood who can provide lawn care, snow
shoveling, babysitting, etc. The Board Meeting Minutes
page documents what is discussed at each monthly meeting
and decisions that are made by the Board. Yet another great
reason to join the Neighborhood Association!
Looking for Babysitters, Lawn
Mowers and Snow Shovelers!

Tragedy Strikes A Neighbor
On October 4th, Tosa Heights resident Bobby Jiles, Jr. was
tragically killed while attending to his disabled car on the Hoan
Bridge. Our deepest sympathies go out to the Jiles family during
this terrible time. Mr. Jiles was just 39 years old, and leaves behind
six children.

You know what the neighborhood looks like today, but
how about 50+ years ago? Several of our neighbors can tell
us. They bought lots here and built the homes they live in
today.
One of our neighbors on 93rd Street, Gloria, was kind
enough to share her story with me. She moved to the area
from Chicago with her two young children in 1957. At that
time, there were more open lots than homes. A few years
would pass before the streets were paved. I also learned that
Gloria’s home shared a well with the original owners of our
home, before it was capped. Initially, an alley was planned
between 93rd and 94th Streets, but that never came about.
As her kids grew up, they attended Madison Elementary
School and Wauwatosa West High School, which were built
in 1958 and 1961, respectively. Shopping malls were being
built around the country in the 1950s, including Mayfair
Mall and Capitol Court (now Midtown Center). They were
anchored by Marshall Fields, Gimbels, T.A. Chapmans, and
Schusters.
Tosa Heights has definitely seen a lot of changes. Thanks
to Gloria for taking time to share them with us. If you
are a long-time resident of Tosa Heights, like Gloria, and
would like to share your memories of the neighborhood and
Wauwatosa for a future newsletter, please call or email me at
414-461-0121 or cdykstra2@wi.rr.com.
