MHNA President’s Greeting
Dear MHNA Neighbors and Friends:
We made it through the worst of winter according to the robins singing outside. It is
about time to get out and get reacquainted with your neighbors, especially any new
arrivals. Please invite them to join you at our quarterly meeting. March 11
TUESDAY, 7 PM, HARRISON SCHOOL LIBRARY. The speaker will be Jamie
Grayson-Borglund from Destination Midtown, a Vibrant Urban Experience. This
group outlined their plans at our general meeting several years ago. We are
anxious to see how it developed. The Benson-Ames Alliance looks closely at how
that model has evolved for the future of our areas’ revitalization. Come ask
questions about what this exciting neighborhood grassroots coalition can mean for
us.
Thanks to all that illuminated the neighborhood in December. You can see photos
on the website though being there was thrilling. Tremendous thanks to the
committee: Bridget Morton, Pat Bianchini, Beth Meiches, Genine Hanna and the
many votive lighters and cleaner uppers.
Bowling was fun and profitable to all attendees. I think everyone won a door prize
or Raffle item. Thanks to the supporting vendors: Janousek Florist, Sgt. Peffer’s
and Donna Faust Garza’s Scrapbooking. Pat Bianchini was the Chairperson
extraordinaire! Thanks to everyone on the MHNA Board and Jana Cutler that lent
a hand. A big thanks of course goes to Kelley’s Hilltop Lanes that allowed all the
receipts to go back to MHNA! They could not have been more generous. We
hope to see you ALL there next year!
The SCAN is happening in April. Please check out
http://neighborhoodscan.unomaha.edu for the entire scoop. Our training will be
March 29 at 9 AM at the Neighborhood Center, 115 South 49th Ave. Parking is on
the north side, entrance on the west UNMC door. Why SCAN? Knowing what
issues are occurring in an area provides the information needed to get recognition
and help from local resources as well as education to the property owner about
what standards are expected to be in code. How to deal with home repair and
safety issues will be addressed in this non-threatening, positive program. Come
help us with a few hours of your time.
As always, call or email me. dhosford4862@msn.com or 551-4862. REMEMBER
THE WEBSITE www.metcalfe-harrison.org. Tell your neighbors to email their
address to to be included in pertinent updates.

Kelley’s Hilltop Lanes and MHNA Bowl a Strike
February 17, 2008, MHNA hosted the second annual
Bowling for Fun and Funds. Kelley’s Hilltop Lane
graciously allowed the neighborhood association to
have a special bowling event and keep all the funds
raised to help improve the neighborhood.
Raffles and door prizes were given out – everyone
had a great time and won some wonderful prizes.
Special thanks to all the volunteers as well as
Janousek Florist, Sgt. Peffer’s, and Donna Faust
Garza’s Scrapbooking for donating prizes and raffles.

Get Involved! Neighbor SCAN Training in April
Neighborhood SCAN is an excellent way for neighbors to help
neighbors. The program addresses code and safety issues in a
positive and non-threatening way. During the September 11,
2007 meeting, Dr. Russell Smith spoke about the Omaha
Neighborhood Scan program available through UNO. The
program has been very effective in many parts of the city.
The program focuses on neighborhoods taking a proactive
approach of solving problems by neighbors helping neighbors.
The university supplies neighborhood volunteers with Pocket PCs
and training on how to identify housing code violations. Many
neighborhood associations have been able to receive grant
money to help resolve some of the issues identified in the
scanned areas.
Training will be held March 29, 2008 at the Neighborhood Center
on 115 S. 49th Ave. at 9:00 AM. For complete details, please see
the calendar of events on page 2 of the newsletter or visit the
website events.
Personal Safety at Home Comes First
Your home itself provides primary safety for you and your family. Make sure that
features like doors, windows, locks, screens, lights, fences and walks are in good
condition and will serve you when needed. Your neighborhood can also provide
safety. Know your neighbors. Know whom you can depend on for assistance. Be a
helpful neighbor yourself.
When you answer your door, leave it locked until you know whom your visitor is. Do
not rely on a door chain; if you must talk, talk through the door. You may verify a
stranger’s identity by telephone with their company or organization. If they claim they
need emergency help, call 911 for them, but leave your door secured. Understand that
while someone has your attention at the front door, someone else may be trying to
gain entry to the back door. Remember, strangers going door-to-door for legitimate
business are not a common occurrence. Call 911 on all suspicious persons.
