This is my Bible. I am what It says I am. I have what It
says I have. I can do what It says I can do. Today I will
be taught the Word of God. I boldly confess that my
mind is alert, my heart is receptive and I will never
be the same.

Little Known Black History Fact:
Samuel Burris
The case of Underground Railroad conductor Samuel
Burris has come full circle, this after the abolitionist
will finally be pardoned, 168 years since his
conviction for freeing slaves. The state of Delaware
will honor Burris in a ceremony next month, clearing
him of his charges posthumously in the process.
Burris was born in 1808 in the Willow Grove section
of Delaware in Kent County. Although he was a free
man, Burris took his family to the relative safety of
Philadelphia to avoid being abducted and sold into
slavery. In 1845, and with slavery dying out, Burris began working alongside
abolitionist and Underground Railroad conductor William Still, and Thomas
Garrett.
Burris understood the risks involved in working with the Underground Railroad,
which was illegal in the state. Burris was eventually caught in 1847 assisting
slave Maria Mathews’ escape from a plantation in Dover. Burris was jailed and
spent 14 months in jail despite the protests of his fellow abolitionists. At the end
of his stay in prison, Burris was convicted and was to be auctioned into slavery.
Burris’ rights were bought for $500 by Wilmington abolitionist, Issac Flint. Flint
then arranged for Burris to rejoin his family in Philadelphia. The ordeal bolstered
Burris’ involvement in freeing slaves, and he continued to support the cause of
helping newly freed slaves adjust to their new lives after the Civil War and the
end of slavery.
There are several conflicting accounts of exactly when Burris died while living
in San Francisco. The years have jumped around from 1863, 1868 and 1869.
Delaware Gov. Jack Markell will host a morning ceremony to pardon Burris at
the Old State House in Dover on November 2. There will also be a dedication of
a historical marker honoring Burris. Several honored guests, included elected
state officials, are slated to offer remarks.

Theme: You Are Not Alone! For the Family Prayer focus prayer for the month of November: As
we progress through the month, may we always remember that in all our family challenges and
triumphs we are not alone, that the HOLY SPIRIT is always with us. When life has gotten too
hard to utter prayer and our faith is being tested, depend on the HOLY SPIRIT to intercede and be
with you. You Are Not Alone! Scriptures: Romans 8:26-28: Likewise the Spirit also helps in our
weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself
makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the
hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints
according to the will of GOD. And we know that all things work together for good to those who
love God to those who are the called according to His purpose. POCs: Deacon Anthony &

Special Wedding Thank You
Alvin and I were married on October 3, 2015 at Greater Little Zion Baptist Church.
We would like to thank all of those who shared good wishes and blessings for us on
our wedding day. It was a day that we will never forget, thanks to you. Our hearts
are still jumping with joy. Your kindness is like a seed that will grow tall in our
memory of this special “Day.”
Sincerely,
Alvin (Cool) & Gloria Coates
Thank You!
To: Rev. Murphy and Zion members,
My daughter and I would like to thank you for the kindness that you have shown us
in our time of need. We would also like to thank you for the wonderful CD; we were
especially blessed by the song “Please Take Care of Me.” Please keep us in your
prayers.
God Bless you all!

New! GLZBC College and Young Adult Sunday School
Facilitator: Angelica Anderson
Place: Upstairs Conference Room
Was Jesus boring? Hardly! He took on the Pharisees. He asked tough questions.
He showed amazing compassion and service.
He changed the world. So, do you think Sunday school is boring?
Hardly!
College students and young adults, come out and experience a nontraditional way to
learn about and do something for God.
Be challenged.
Debate world issues, religious traditions. Ask and answer tough questions.
Experience a new way to grow and serve in Christ and fellowship with one another.
The ones who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who
do.

Chess
Join us on 2nd Sundays after the 11AM service for CHESS. Chess is a game for
people of all ages. You can learn to play at any age, and in chess, unlike in many
other sports, you don't ever have to retire. Age is also not a factor when you're
looking for an opponent -- young can play with old and old can play with young.
Chess develops memory. Chess improves concentration. Chess develops
logical thinking. Chess develops the capability to predict and foresee consequences
of actions. Chess shows that success rewards hard work. The more you practice, the
better you'll become. Join us for chess, pizza & fellowship. For more information,
please contact Bro Al Hayes or Sis LaKita Jones. Software to play is a FREE
download at http://www.playchess.com.
