Keeping Informed: Selected Notes from the March 15 Planning
Council Meeting
Executive Director Glen Krc In follow-up
to the Mission of the Month list, there was a
question as to whether the Fox Family should
be included since all Sunday school offerings
go to the Foxes. It is possible for the
congregation to recommend changes to the
list if there is a compelling reason to do so. ■
Security for the downstairs office was
discussed. Suggestions/requests include:
reserving its use primarily for the Financial
Secretary and the storage of records;
eliminating its use as a classroom; providing
a lockable door; procuring lockable files for
paperwork and a fireproof cabinet for
permanent records; securing the safe and the
cabinet to the wall; relocating or adding a
phone line to the kitchen.
Pastor Report Emil Gretarsson A two page
written report of activities provided to council. Highlights include: Baptism of three children and three adults in February. ■ Members
of the new-member class currently meeting in
the sanctuary will be received into membership on April 1, 2012. ■ Confirmation for this
year’s class will be postponed until next year
in order to keep this large group together.
They will be prepared and receive first Communion June 3, 2012.
Financial Secretary Jan Titus Operating
income for February 2012 was $22,129.00.
This is 17.5% over the previous year.
Treasurer Don Schleef The treasurer’s report is filed separately and posted on the
“Concordia Business” bulletin board.

March 31 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. ■ An adult progressive dinner is being
planned for April. ■ Joe Cullen (Thrivent Rep.) will work with us on
the meal for the visiting Concordia (Bronxville) Choir May 6.
Public Relations Ron Bucher The committee placed over 800 doorknob hangers in the apartments, the homes across Downsville Pike, and
townhouses in Oak Ridge.
Full minutes are posted on the Concordia Business bulletin board and
are available by email from the recording secretary.
Easter Activities Children of all ages are invited to come
on Saturday March 31 for a morning of Easter related
activities. The day will include egg coloring (You provide
the COOKED eggs), a craft activity, and the annual Easter
Egg hunt which has been moved away from Easter Sunday so that the children can have some Sunday school
time on this most holy day. Don’t forget to sign up. Donations of
wrapped candy and small prizes to fill the plastic eggs for the egg
hunt. Put them in the specially marked basket in the narthex.
Resurrection Eggs a special Sunday School Easter project is
“Resurrection Eggs”. Starting last Sunday and continuing
today and next Sunday children may take a Resurrection Egg
from the basket. Each egg contains a slip of paper with a personal care item on it. Children are asked to bring that item to
Sunday school and place in a specially marked basket up until Easter.
The items will be dedicated and then given to a local mission - such as
REACH or the Rescue Mission. The purpose of this is to encourage
sharing with others during this holy season.
His Food Ministry The very first distribution for His Food ministry
took place yesterday. We had 44 orders which had to be packed in
boxes. New menus are out for April and will be distributed in the next
couple of weeks to the sites where we formerly took Angel Food
menus. We have received a lot of inquiries about His Food Ministry
since the TV and newspaper spots.
Men Want to Be Served, Not Serve
The eyes of the world and of men, on the contrary, look only above them
and are lifted up with pride, as it is said in Prov. 30:13: “There is a people
whose eyes are lofty, and their eyelids lifted up on high.” This we experience every day. Everyone strives after that which is above him, after
honor, power, wealth, knowledge, a life of ease, and whatever is lofty and
great. And where such people are, there are man hangers-on; all the world
gathers round them, gladly yields them service, and would be at their side
and share in their exaltation. Therefore it is not without reason that the
Scriptures describe so few kings and rulers who were godly men. On the
other hand, no one is willing to look into the squalor, misery, and anguish.
From these all turn away their eyes. Where there are such people, everyone
takes to his heels, themselves; no one dreams of helping them. And so they
must remain in the depths and in their low and despised condition. There is
among men no creator who would make something out of nothing.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
 Open Arms CCDC We were happy to see so many from Concordia at Chik-Fil-A Spirit-Night on Thursday. We had a lot of children
stop by and make the free butterflies and lots of business on the
10:00 a.m. Svc.
prize wheel. Proceeds from the wheel was $51 plus we will receive
20% of sales from everyone who indicated they were with Open
Arms Preschool. The open house yesterday hosted a number of people interested in enrolling children next year. Sylvia attended a 6
hour class yesterday called Project Security Blanket which deals with
emergency preparedness plans for preschools - for example: what do
you do if you must leave the immediate area of the school and you
don’t have car seats for all the children?
Concordia Choir! We have a good core group of people in our
newly formed choir, but welcome additional voices. We especially
need another alto or two. We are working on Easter music under the
leadership of Kathy Schleef with accompaniment by Cindy Golem.
Practice id held on Wednesday following Lenten worship. We try to
finish by 8:45 at the latest.
Yard Sale We are pretty well caught up in pricing at this point
so we will take a break until after Easter. We will resume work on
Thursday, April 12 from 9:00 until 3:00 - or when we finish, whichever comes first. We will continue receive items until May 4. Please
place them on the marked pallet just inside the entrance to the lower
level of Harmony Hall. Anyone in the congregation interested in
furniture is welcome to come look, buy, and haul away pieces of
furniture before the sale. It’s a great source for college students or
young people getting a first apartment. See Cheryl Fertitta if you
need help.
This is the week we visit the Community Free Clinic
on Thursday evening. We will be met there by a volunteer to take us on a tour and tell us about the work
they do for the uninsured in the community. The
clinic is located at 249 Mill St in the vicinity of the
old hospital, Hager Park and Memorial Stadium. See Sylvia if you
need a map. Meet at the clinic by 6:30. You can bring guests who
are interested in the clinic. We will meet back at the church for devotions and refreshments after the clinic visit. Carol Rosicky is host.
Mike and Nancy Flicek just returned from a stay at Hilton Head SC where they also enjoyed a day trip to
Charleston.
