INFI-SHIELD® INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

Clean the flange of the casting frame and the top 5
inch area of the cone of the manhole with a wire
brush and a whisk broom. Both areas must be clean
and dry.

Apply the aerosol primer on the casting flange
where the mastic on the inside top section will bond
to the structure.

Install the Infi-Shield Uni-band on the outside
surface of the adjustment ring area covering all
grade rings. The seal should be positioned with the L
shaped corner at the top of the manhole structure.
Do not pull the seal completely down onto the
base/flange of the frame. Enough room should be
left so that the protective tape can be easily removed.

Remove the protective tape from the non-hardening
butyl mastic located under the top section of the seal.
Then position the top section so that it lies flat onto
the base/flange of the frame. If necessary in order to
lie flat, the seal may be carefully cut around any
gussets.

Position 2” of the bottom section of the seal just
below the top of the concrete cone (or on the top
slab as in this installation). Fold back the bottom
mastic portion of the seal. Apply the aerosol primer
on the top of the cone where the mastic will bond.
Allow a few minutes for the primer to dry and
become tacky. Remove the protective tape from the
non-hardening butyl mastic located inside the
bottom section.

Fold the bottom of the seal back onto the structure
and with a rubber hammer tap the seal’s top and
bottom mastic areas onto the structure.

Clean a 5-inch area on the cover with a brush.
Position the inspection tab on the side of the casting
frame and onto the cover. Remove the protective
tape from the mastic on the free end of the
inspection tab and fasten the inspection tab onto the
cover tapping it into place with a rubber hammer.

You may now backfill with a permanent seal
between the manhole frame and the cone,
including the entire adjustment area.

Infi-Shield® External Gator Wrap
Infi-Shield® Gator Wrap prevents
infiltration by providing a water-tight
seal around any manhole, catch basin or
concrete pipe joint. Gator Wrap resists
harsh soil conditions and also provides a
root barrier for any crack or joint.
Infi-Shield® Gator Wrap installs easily
with no special tools and can be
immediately backfilled.

Each manhole, catch basin or pipe joint shall be sealed
with an external rubber sleeve similar to the Infi-Shield
Gator Wrap as manufactured by Sealing Systems Inc
(763-478-2057). The seal shall be made of a Stretchable,
Self-Shrinking, Intra-Curing Halogenated based rubber
with a minimum thickness of 30 mils. The back side of
each unit shall be coated with a cross-linked re-enforced
butyl adhesive. The butyl adhesive shall be nonhardening sealant with a minimum thickness of 30 mils.
The seal shall be designed to stretch around the joint and
then overlapped creating a cross-link and fused bond
between the rubber and butyl adhesive. Gator Wrap
forms a continuous rubber seal on a manhole joint which
prevents water and soil from infiltrating through the
manhole, catch basin or concrete pipe joint.

Manhole Insert
Strong Durable Manhole Cover Inflow Dish
Leaking manhole covers are a major contributor to rainfall induced inflow. Sewer evaluation studies indicate that a typical manhole casting
will allow an inflow rate from .20 to over 5 gallons per minute during
rainfall occurrences. While the manhole cover is one of the leading
contributors to collections system I & I; ironically, it is the easiest and
most cost-effective problem to remedy.
You can stop this unwanted inflow of rainwater through the manhole

COMPANY HISTORY
In 1867, Joseph Ess opened a blacksmith and wagon shop in Chaska, Minnesota, a
community also noted for an abundance of brickyards. By the 1880’s, the brickyard
owners persuaded Joseph Ess to add a foundry to his business so he could repair their brick
making machines. Rather than just develop a means of repairing existing equipment,
the Ess family came up with an entirely new machine with the capability to produce
50,000 bricks a day. Joseph’s son, Frank, was the chief designer of the machine,
which went by the brand name “Nameless” in the Ess catalog.
The company also manufactured runners, sleighs, and iron cauldrons of all sizes and
for all uses in addition to iron fencing and iron crosses for cemeteries. The arrival of
the car virtually eliminated demand for sleighs. The Esses worked on a number of other
items until the 1940’s, when they carved a sizable niche in the area of municipal castings.
The suburban building boom upon the conclusion of World War II produced unprecedented
need for manhole covers, which the company proceeded to satisfy.
To this day, Ess Brothers & Sons, Inc. has continued to meet the changing demands of
their customers by establishing a metal fabrication shop and metal machine shop.
Ess Brothers & Sons, Inc. specializes in trenchless technology focusing on Inflow and
Infiltration at the top of the manhole. Their product line consists of manhole castings,
catch basin castings, manhole paving adjustment rings, external and internal seals, tree
grates, trench grating, overflow structures, aluminum hatches and custom fabrication.
The office and operations of Ess Brothers & Sons, Inc. have moved to Loretto, Minnesota.
It remains a family operation, now in its sixth generation of ownership. The management
of Ess Brothers & Sons, Inc. is the following:
