Head Coach Dave Dallas, who is entering his ninth year at Kansas Wesleyan University and his 17th in the KCAC, says believes Coyote Football team has made all-around improvement over last year’s team that finished 5-5 overall and 5-4 in the KCAC. “We have helped ourselves in every aspect of our football team either through maturity or recruitment,” Dallas said. Offensively, the Coyotes return 10 players who started at some time on last year’s team, only losing receiver Steven Willis, quarterback Mike Pozzi, and lineman Jacob Mitchell from a year ago. “Offensively, I think we are going to be an experienced offense,” Dallas said. “We have probably helped ourselves on the recruiting aspect offensively.” Dallas points to several junior college signees on the offensive line and the receiver position. He also points out that four of the five offensive line positions have returning players from last season, and that all five spots have players that were part of the team last year. “All of our transfers on the offense are very good players, no matter what the position. Wes DuBois, a red-shirt offensive lineman (6-8, 310), will only add to the strong core of big guys up front. We are going to be very strong, and very good on the offensive line this season. Ryan Peterson should have another good season to go along with his first team All-KCAC selection last year.” One of the biggest improvements will be in the Coyote backfield. Dallas has recruited two big backs in Darrell Grames (6-0, 215, Shasta JC) and Steven Willrich (6-2, 245, Ranger JC) to counter with speedster Jerod Barrett at the running back position. Dallas compares both to Oscar Nero, only “bigger, faster, and stronger.” The quarterback position still remains undecided, with no clear cut favorite emerging yet. Three players are all working for the chance at the starting position: Steven Phillips (6-0, 190, Sr.), Junior Alexis (6-3, 205, Jr., U. Iowa), and Brad Manning (6-3, 200, So.). “The quarterback position will be a battle throughout camp,” Dallas said. At the receiver position, Dallas hopes that several junior college signees will play significant roles along with returners Bryan Cooper (First Team All-KCAC), Clifton Fernandez, and John Pope. “We brought in a lot of junior college receivers to try to get better there.” “Clifton Fernandez really came on during last season, and should catch a few passes this year. John Pope is a strong physical receiver who isn’t afraid to hand out some big hits. Both these guys, and of course Cooper, headline our receivers.” Dallas is concerned somewhat on the defensive side of the ball. Wesleyan returns only five players that started last season. Also returning is linebacker Scott L’Ecuyer (6-2, 205), who missed all of last season with a knee injury. Dallas does point to the recruiting trail for improvement. “Defensively we have helped ourselves, but we have to mold together as a group,” he said. Dallas said the linebacker corps will be very strong with all returning players at those positions. 4 2005 COYOTE FOOTBALL MEDIA GUIDE “With L’Ecuyer coming back, and Colten Campbell back, and Adam Paredes back, we should be very good at linebacker. Throw in Ross Ritter (6-0, 215, Salina South), and we are going to have a heck of a linebacker group this year.” The biggest concern on defense is depth in the secondary. “We still have to find another safety to compliment Andy Bristow (6-2, 205, Sacramento State), but will probably move Robert Javadian (5-11, 205, Blinn JC) back there, as he is very good. We are still looking at a couple guys to bring in as well.” “We have DEFINITELY improved at the special teams position,” Dallas said. Red-shirt kicker Gary Trione (5-11, 200, Mulvane, Kan.) will take over kicking duties for Myles Pitts who is not returning this season. Returning kickers Aaron Miller and Salvador Arceo and punter Justin Davis make for a strong kicking group that can get the ball through the uprights and score some points for the offense. “Trione is a good kicker with great distance and accuracy. Arceo red-shirted last season to work on his kicking game and Aaron Miller had a good season last year,” Dallas continued. “Justin Davis is not a real long punter - he’ll be right around 39 or 40 yards a kick - but he can pop one every once in a while. Justin’s main strength is placing the ball. He’ll be able to pin offenses deep and set up our defense to make some plays.” Dallas also said the problems at long snapper have been solved. “Chris Battersby, Devon Sherman, along with Brent Pozzi and Steven Willrich, can all make long snaps, so I can say I am pretty confident in that area,” Dallas said. The kick return game should be strong too, with Brandon Sutton and John Louis returning kicks along with Bryan Cooper and Jerod Barrett returning punts and kickoffs respectively. Dallas feels the 2005 season could be one of his best at Kansas Wesleyan. “We have the potential to be a very good football team on both sides of the ball,” Dallas said. Since coming to KWU, Dallas has amassed a 40-40 record at Kansas Wesleyan, and brought home two KCAC Championships (2001, 2002) as well as the school’s first two berths into the NAIA’s 16-team Football Championship Series. Before taking over at Kansas Wesleyan, Dallas spent eight years at Ottawa University in Ottawa, where he compiled a 42-35-1 record for the Braves. Dallas’ 40 wins at Kansas Wesleyan puts him in third place all-time in coaching wins, only behind Coyote Gridiron Legends Gene Bissell (116) and A.B. Mackie (78). His .500 winning percentage is good for seventh all-time at KWU. Dallas graduated from Missouri Western State College in 1983. He resides in Salina with his wife, Kelly, and four children: Drew, Casey, Trey, and Molly. William Wille - Offensive Coordinator William Wille enters his ninth year as offensive coordinator for the Coyotes. Previous to KWU, Wille coached at Ottawa University for eight seasons, where he was offensive line coach for Head Coach Dave Dallas. While at Ottawa, Wille also was head Baseball coach for four years. He was named Co-Coach of the Year in 1988. He also spent four years as assistant track coach. A 1985 graduate from Missouri Western State College, he earned his degree in Social Science. From there, he continued onto South Arkansas University where he earned his Master’s Degree in Education with emphasis in counseling. While at MWSC, Wille was named First Team All-District Offensive Lineman, and Second Team All-Conference. At SAU, he was special teams coach, and was all-sports strength coach. Colby Hensley - Defensive Coordinator Colby Hensley enters his third year as Defensive Coordinator for the Coyotes. As a player, Hensley was a four-year letterman and a member of two KCAC Championship squads at Bethany College in 1996 and 1999. His best year came in 1999 when he started at outside linebacker for the Swedes and was named Honorable Mention All-KCAC at his position. In 2001, Hensley finished his degree in Biology and Secondary Biology, and most recently he completed his Master of Education Degree from Washburn University in Topeka. Hensley and his wife, Holly, reside in Salina, and will be Resident Directors in Pfeiffer Hall this year. 17 KANSAS WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY 2005 Football Coaching Staff Seth Johnson - Assistant Coach Seth Johnson enters his fifth year as the Defensive Line Coach for the Coyotes. Johnson also played at Kansas Wesleyan earning All-Conference Honors, and a Hansen All-American honor. This is also Johnson’s third season as Special Teams Coordinator. Louis Neal - Assistant Coach Louis Neal begins his first campaign with Kansas Wesleyan University. Before coming to Kansas Wesleyan, Neal spent the last two seasons at Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa, where his main responsibility was working with linebackers. Before Graceland, Neal spent three years at West Valley High School in Fairbanks, Alaska. He also spent three years coaching at Ben Eielson High School at Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska. In his six years coaching in the Alaska prep ranks, five of Neal’s teams participated in the state playoffs. In 2001, his West Valley team missed winning the state championship by one point. Prior to his coaching experience in Alaska, Neal spent two seasons coaching linebackers for the United States Marine Corps football team at Camp Pendleton in California. Neal played for two seasons at Woodbridge American High School in Ipwisch, England, and at Albuquerque HIgh School in Albuquerque, New Mexico, before joining the Marines, where he served duties both locally and overseas. A native of Tampa, Fla., he is the son of Aleatha and Nelson Neal, and has two sisters, Natasha and Nichelle. 18 2005 COYOTE FOOTBALL MEDIA GUIDE Athletic Department Staff Matthew Williams - Director of Athletic Programs Matthew Williams is no stranger to Kansas Wesleyan Athletics, but now is in a new position as Director of Athletic Programs. He succeeds Jerry Jones, who announced his intentions to retire last spring. Williams, a member of the KWU family since 1999, came to KWU after three years as Athletic Trainer at West Hills Community College in Coalinga, Calif. He took over the Athletic Training program at KWU, and transformed it from an internship program into a full-fleged academic major, and into the KCAC’s first Nationally Accreditied Athletic Training Education Program by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. He has also been an integral part of the development of KWU’s Master of Business Administration Degree with emphasis in Sports Management and most recently the undergraduate Sports Management degree, which begins this fall. Over the past two seasons, Williams has been the Associate Athletic Director at KWU, and in charge of Game Day Operations for all Coyote athletic events. Williams has a Doctor of Sports Management degree with emphasis in Sports Marketing from the United States Sports Academy, a Master of Business Administration degree from Kansas Wesleyan, a Master of Science Degree in Athletic Administration from Idaho State University, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education from Boise State University. He resides in Salina with his wife, Tonda, and daughter, Victoria. David Toelle - Sports Information Director David Toelle enters his fifth year as Sports Information Director at Kansas Wesleyan. Toelle is also the university’s Webmaster and works in the Information Systems Department as a computer technician. His responsibilities as SID include publication of media guides for media day events, publication of game day programs, keeping statistics at football, basketball and baseball games, press box and table management at football and basketball games, writing press releases, and updating the athletic department website. Toelle came to Kansas Wesleyan in the Fall of 1996, and graduated from Wesleyan in 2001 with a Bachelors’ Degree in Computer Information Systems. Toelle got involved with Coyote Athletics in 1998 at the now defunct National Small College Athletic Association’s National Basketball Championships held at KWU. He began doing stats at all KWU basketball games and got more involved with the athletic department, culminating in the appointment to the position of Sports Information Director. Toelle also is involved in the community, especially during the basketball season, when he donates his time at the Salina Bicentennial Center doing basketball statistics for the basketball tournaments held there in March. He also is involved with the Kansas Cagerz, a USBL Professional Basketball team that plays its game from April to June. This fall he also has taken on the duty of KCAC Conference Statistician. Toelle is the son of John Toelle of Reading and Nancy Jones of Rossville. David’s interesting fact is that he has done statistics at 177 basketball games between November 2004 and June 2005. He resides in Salina with his wife, Jennifer, and two-year-old son, Trae. 19 KANSAS WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY Athletic Department Staff Athletic Trainer - Chad Shriver Chad Shriver begins his fourth year as Athletic Trainer at Kansas Wesleyan University. Highs and lows, ups and downs were commonplace in Coyote Camp as Kansas Wesleyan finished the campaign with a 5-5 record overall, 5-4 in the KCAC. The Coyotes picked up their fifth win of the season a few weeks after the conclusion of the season, when it was learned that Bethany College had to forfeit the 30-7 Swede win to the Coyotes due to participation of an ineligible player. Kansas Wesleyan began the season at home against non-conference opponent Bacone College (Okla.). The Coyotes hung with the Warriors for a half, before the bigger and stronger guests from Muskogee took over the game and cruised to a 40-21 win. The Coyotes allowed 510 yards of offense, including seven receptions by Bacone’s Brandon Banks for 146 yards. Kansas Wesleyan’s senior quarterback Mike Pozzi was 12 of 24 passing for 179 yards, a majority of those numbers going to Bryan Cooper, who made his collegiate debut in the game with six catches for 132 yards and two touchdowns. A week later at Lansing High School, KWU took on the Spires of the University of Saint Mary. After trailing 21-14 at halftime, the Coyote defense awakened and effectively put up a brick wall in stopping the Spire offense. The Coyote defense only allowed 49 yards of offense in the second 30 minutes and forced eight turnovers in the game. Mike Pozzi was 8-of-25 passing for 102 yards. Bryan Cooper had three catches for 42 yards and two touchdowns. Cooper also added 37 yards rushing on four carries. Jerod Barrett had 83 yards rushing on 26 carries and a touchdown. After KWU’s rallying win the previous week over Saint Mary, the Coyotes let Southwestern’s James Kelly rush all over the Coyote defense for 255 yards as the Moundbuilders beat Kansas Wesleyan for the first time since 2000, 34-24, at Martin Stadium. Steven Phillips filled in for quarterback Mike Pozzi who was nursing an ankle injury and went 16-of-31 passing for 204 yards and two touchdowns. Southwestern led 20-17 at halftime, but the Coyotes were able to rally to within three at 27-24, before Kelly broke an 80-yard touchdown run with 8:18 left in the fourth quarter to give Southwestern the final margin. Southwestern also shredded the Coyote defense through the air with 232 yards passing from quarterback Braden Smith. The ‘Builders’ Ta’Ron West had five catches for 115 yards and three touchdowns. Offensively, the Coyotes were led by Jerod Barrett with 68 yards rushing, while Bryan Cooper had four catches for 65 yards, and Steve Willis had four catches for 63 yards and two touchdowns. 21 KANSAS WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY Kansas Wesleyan’s Homecoming featured a rematch with Tabor College. Tabor pulled out a stunning 30-28 win in 2003 over the Coyotes on the foot of Keenan Morris’ 45-yard field goal with 1:36 left. This time, the Coyotes pulled ahead 6-0 on two early field goals by Aaron Miller and Myles Pitts. Pitts’ field goal, a 47-yard boot, set a new Kansas Wesleyan record, and was one of the longest in the KCAC last season. After that, the Coyote offense bogged down, and the Tabor offense flurried as the Bluejays cruised to the 21-6 win over KWU on October 2. Tabor quarterback Ricky Ishida was 16of-34 passing for 294 yards and two touchdowns. Tabor also had a two-headed rushing machine in Roger Butler (73 yards on 17 carries) and Ted Telemaque (55 yards on 21 carries). The Bluejays receiving core was led by Layne Frick with eight catches for 141 yards and a touchdown. KWU was paced offensively by Jerod Barrett’s 55 yards rushing while Bryan Cooper added 52 yards rushing and had four catches for 42 yards. Steve Willis also added five catches for 62 yards. Following the loss to Tabor, the Coyotes headed west to play Sterling College. Sterling was still searching for its first win in 25 games, until the Coyotes came to town. Sterling jumped out to a 14-0 lead before the Coyotes knew what hit them, and the Warriors cruised to their first win in 25 games with a 34-19 drubbing of KWU at Smisor Stadium. It was the Coyotes’ third straight loss. Sterling used a monster running game from Nathan Baker, Andy Wesner and Chad Cox. The three combined for 288 yards rushing as the Sterling offense shredded the Coyote defense once again. In fact, Sterling only needed 105 yards passing from quarterback Nathan Baker, as the Warriors allowed the running game to take over. Sterling led 14-3 after one quarter of play, and 21-10 at the half. The Coyotes tried to rally in the second half, but got no closer than five points, 21-16, before Sterling pulled away for the final 34-19 count. Kansas Wesleyan was led in rushing by Jerod Barrett, who had 86 yards on 10 attempts, including a 42-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Freshman Bryan Cooper had another great offensive game with five rushes for 23 yards and five receptions for 49 yards. Senior receiver Nick Royer added four catches for 64 yards, and Steve Willis had three catches for 24 yards. Quarterback Mike Pozzi was 15-of-29 passing for 164 yards. The Coyotes finally righted the ship and snapped the three-game losing streak with a convincing 17-7 win over Friends University on their Homecoming. It was the Coyote defense that stepped up to the challenge, holding the NAIA’s leading rusher, Aaron Howell, to just 55 yards on 22 carries. Friends quarterback Chris Randolph did have a good night passing, as he went 20-of-36 for 254 yards and a touchdown. His favorite target of the night was Brandon Johnson who had 12 catches for 176 yards. Jarod Barrett nearly broke the century mark rushing on the evening, with 16 carries for 98 yards, while senior Elvis Mendoza had 34 yards on 11 carries. Mike Pozzi was 12-of-27 passing for 155 yards and two touchdowns. Freshman Bryan Cooper had three catches for 80 yards and two touchdowns, including a spectacular catch in which he reached around the defender pulled down the reception and backpedaled into the endzone. Special teams mistakes cost the Coyotes a chance for their first two-game winning streak of the 2004 season. The Coyotes missed a short field goal in the first overtime period, and the extra point following the go ahead touchdown in the second overtime, as they fell to Ottawa University at home 27-26. Kansas Wesleyan’s defense stepped up big in the fourth quarter as Paul Courter blocked a field goal attempt by Brandon Myers with 42 seconds left in the game to force overtime. In the first overtime, Ottawa had the chance to go ahead but missed a 24-yard field goal. The Coyotes then drove as close as the Ottawa 3-yard line, but a two-yard loss on third down pushed them back out to the five, and forced them to go for the 22-yard field goal. The snap was bad and Miller missed the kick. In the second overtime, a bad snap struck again, after Matt Folb scored from one-yard out, but Miller missed the extra point. In Ottawa’s possession, Kevin Mikeska scored from three yards out and Myers hit the extra point to win it for the Braves. KWU was down 20-7 at halftime, but held Ottawa scoreless in the second half, while putting 13 points on the board in the third quarter. Jerod Barrett scored from 7 yards and 10 yards for the two KWU scores in the third. Senior tailback Elvis Mendoza led the Coyote rushers with 18 carries for 99 yards. Barrett added 23 carries for 80 yards and three touchdowns. Mike Pozzi was 12-of-25 passing for 119 yards. Steve Willis notched the another of the KWU career receiving records, this time the yardage record, catching two passes for 25 yards. Nick Royer had three catches for 33 yards, and Aaron Aska had three catches for 21 yards. Ottawa was led in rushing by Neil Moore with 11 carries for 77 yards and two touchdowns. Moore also was 11-of-25 passing for 153 yards. Josh Short had six carries for 52 yards and split time with Moore calling signals, going 11-for-21 passing for 90 yards, but had two interceptions. 22 2005 COYOTE FOOTBALL MEDIA GUIDE The Coyotes next traveled to McPherson to face the Bulldogs. It was the Coyotes’ day as they ran, passed and scored over the Bulldogs for a 20-7 victory. The Coyote offense exploded for 451 yards of offense compared to McPherson’s 231. Jerod Barrett carried 24 times for 156 yards, while Mike Pozzi was 20-of-31 passing for 255 yards and a touchdowns. Receiver Steve Willis put the final KWU career receiving record on his resume as well. After catching a 48yard touchdown pass with 14:22 to go in the first half, Willis tied the total receptions record with 9:43 to go in the second quarter on a 20-yard catch and run from Pozzi. With 25.5 seconds to go in the half, Willis caught his 109th pass to get the record on a 12-yard catch. The final margin may have been greater if the Coyotes had not committed seven turnovers on the day, two interceptions, three fumbles and two on downs. The Bulldogs also committed five turnovers on their own, four interceptions and a loss on downs. After Mike Pozzi snuck in from a yard out to put the Coyotes ahead 14-0, McPherson’s Kris Smiley took the ensuing kickoff 93-yards for a touchdown to give the Bulldogs their only score of the day. Steve Willis had seven receptions for 106 yards and one touchdown. Bryan Cooper continued his phenomenal freshman campaign with five catches for 77 yards. He also had two carries for 13 yards. Senior tailback Elvis Mendoza rushed ten times for 36 yards as the Coyotes rushed for 196 yards on the afternoon. McPherson was led in rushing by Nick Griggs on 24 carries for 94 yards. Quarterback Sean Eason was 9-of-28 passing for only 88 yards and had four interceptions. Eason also rushed 12 times for 27 yards. The Coyotes returned home for Senior Day against Bethel College, and were finally able to pull out a win at home, 35-21, over the Threshers. Down 21-7 after a 66-yard touchdown pass from Victor Flores to Peter Garibaldi with 4:12 to go in the second quarter, the Coyotes tightened the defensive wall and held the Bethel offense scoreless and only allowed 54 yards of Thresher offense after that point, while the offense was busy racking up 264 yards of offense and 28 unanswered points en route to the 14-point win. Mike Pozzi was 24-of-40 passing on the afternoon for 285 yards and four touchdowns, earning KCAC Offensive Player-of-the-Week honors. The Coyote receiving core had a huge afternoon led by senior Steve Willis with six grabs for 46 yards and a touchdown. Fellow seniors Aaron Aska and Nick Royer also had big afternoons. Aska caught five balls for 69 yards and a TD, while Royer had four catches for 52 yards. Freshman Bryan Cooper put on a big show as well catching five passes for 65 yards and two touchdowns. Kansas Wesleyan was led in rushing by Jerod Barrett who had 22 carries for 115 yards. Cooper added five carries for 30 yards and a rushing touchdown. Senior tailback Elvis Mendoza had eight carries for 29 yards. Bethel’s Victor Flores was 12-of-27 passing for 221 yards and two touchdowns, but also threw four interceptions. Phillip Barron had a big day for the Threshers, rushing 29 times for 147 yards and a touchdown. Peter Garibaldi had five catches for 110 yards, and Greg Enns caught one pass for 65 yards and a TD. The Coyotes headed 15 miles south of Salina to Lindsborg to face arch-rival Bethany College in the final game of the season. The Coyotes took control of the game on the opening kickoff as Brandon Sutton handed the ball to John Louis, who then scampered 79 yards to give KWU the 7-0 lead. It was the only glimmer of offense that KWU would have on the afternoon as Bethany’s defense dominated the game and only allowed 100 yards of total offense by the Coyotes. Meanwhile, Bethany manhandled the Coyote defense for 437 yards, 242 of those on the ground, while running twice as many plays as the Coyotes. The Swedes won the game 30-7. Bethany got on the board in the first quarter by a 24-yard field goal by Kyle Fowler. Neither team scored in the second quarter, but the Swedes posted the only score of the third quarter to gain the lead at 10-7 on a 11-yard pass from Tyler Boyd to Ryan Dugan. Bethany scored three times in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach of the Coyotes. Boyd had a 286 yards of total offense on the afternoon, 91 rushing and 195 passing, for the Swedes. Dominick Tatum added 14 carries for 58 yards, while Kerwin Washington had 17 carries for 34 yards. The Swedes rushed 68 times for 242 yards as a team. Boyd was 18-of-24 passing for 195 yards and three touchdowns. Orlando Chavez led a corps of seven different Bethany receivers with seven catches for 69 yards. Kansas Wesleyan tailback Jerod Barrett carried 12 times for 24 yards, although KWU only had 21 yards rushing as a team, due to quarterback Mike Pozzi having four carries for -14 yards. Pozzi was 4-of-15 passing for 58 yards and two interceptions and was sacked twice, before being replaced by Steven Phillips. Phillips was 4-of-9 for 21 yards and two interceptions. In late December, Bethany College made acknowledgment that an ineligible player played in the season finale against Kansas Wesleyan, and consequently forfeited the game to the Coyotes. This made the Coyotes record 5-5 overall and 5-4 in the KCAC, while Bethany’s record changed from 4-5 both overall and in the KCAC to 3-6. 23 KANSAS WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY Kansas Wesleyan University 2004 Athletic Conference The Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference, commonly called "The Kansas Conference," is a prominent intercollegiate athletics conference comprised of 10 outstanding independent or private institutions of higher education in the state. The origins of the KCAC are traced to February 15, 1890, when the Kansas Intercollegiate Athletic Association became the result of the first successful attempt at organization among Kansas colleges, "to promote and regulate amateur intercollegiate athletics.” At that time, the association or conference included not only private universities and colleges but also Kansas Agriculture College (now KSU), Kansas University, and Washburn University. Football seems to have been the major sponsored sport, and Baker University won the championship for the first three or four years. In about 1902, this early association became allied with the Kansas College Athletic Conference, a group that was the first to adopt a definite set of rules and regulations. It also promoted an annual Track and Field Meet, which has continued yearly since, except for World War years. Basketball has been sponsored since 1904. Football was revived in 1907. Tennis began as early as 1912. Golf was added in 1923. By this time the name of the conference had been altered to the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference; it had grown to 17 college members and two allied members: Baker, Bethany, Bethel, College of Emporia, Fairmount (now WSU), Friends, Kansas Wesleyan, KSTC of Emporia (now ESU), KSTC of Hays (now FHSU), KSTC of Pittsburg (now PSU), McPherson, Ottawa, St. Benedict's (now Benedictine), St. Mary's (in St. Mary, Kansas), Sterling (formerly Cooper), Southwestern, and Washburn, and with St. John's and Kansas City University (Kansas) as allied members. Kansas University and Kansas Aggies had dropped out earlier to join other conferences. In 1923, the College of Emporia, KSTC of Emporia, KSTC of Hays, KSTC of Pittsburg, Wichita (formerly Fairmount), Southwestern, and Washburn withdrew to form the Central Conference. The present legal entity comes from a reorganization of the conference when the predecessor Kansas Intercollegiate Athletic Conference formally disbanded on December 1, 1928, and a new conference was formed which again was called the Kansas College Athletic Conference. The members were Baker, Bethany, Kansas Wesleyan, McPherson, Ottawa, and St. Mary's colleges. At that time sportswriters quickly gave the KCAC league a nickname: the "Little Six", in contrast to the Big Six (which became Big Eight, now Big 12) which also was organized in 1928. St. Mary's College was discontinued in 1931. The College of Emporia returned to the fold in 1933, and Bethel was readmitted in 1939. Friends, a former member of the KIAC, was admitted in 1953. Sterling and Southwestern were approved for membership in 1958. In 1968 Tabor College and St. Mary of the Plains College were admitted to make 12 members in the conference, and the conference was organized into Southern and Northern divisions until 1970 - when Baker, College of Emporia, and Ottawa withdrew to join two separate Missouri-based conferences. The formal name, which had been changed to Kansas College Athletic Conference, was changed again in the mid-1970s to Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. In 1975, women's intercollegiate athletics were incorporated into programs of the KCAC. In 1981, Ottawa was readmitted, bringing the conference membership to 10. In 1992, St. Mary of the Plains College in Dodge City left the conference. In 1999, Saint Mary College (now known as The University of Saint Mary) in Leavenworth was admitted, with eligibility for championships beginning in the 2000-2001 academic year, and the conference returned to 10 institutions. The "Kansas Conference" (KCAC) continues to be an all-Kansas conference. The KCAC is an affiliated conference of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics with headquarters in Olathe, Kansas. Today the KCAC sponsors conference intercollegiate athletics in football, volleyball, men's cross country, women's cross country, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's basketball, women's basketball, men's indoor track and field, women's indoor track and field, men's outdoor track and field, women's outdoor track and field, baseball, softball, golf, women's tennis, men's tennis. The KCAC is a widely respected conference that governs intercollegiate athletics in cooperation with the NAIA. 30 2005 COYOTE FOOTBALL MEDIA GUIDE KCAC Football Championships by School Since 1929 Since the modern era of the Kansas Conference began in 1929, 12 different institutions have been able to call themselves KCAC Football Champions. This shows how many championships each school has won and what years they were won. Kansas Wesleyan’s football history is a storied one, one of great coaches, great players, and great teams. It all began in 1893, as the “Wesleyans” as they were known back then, took to the field experimenting with one of the newest intercollegiate sports sweeping the nation, football. Kansas Wesleyan played its first ever game against the high school team from Abilene on November 6, 1893. KWU was victorious 14-2. The November 7, 1893, edition of the Salina Daily Republican claimed, “WESLEYAN WINS! The Abilene team gets some pointers on foot ball...” Just one week later, the team traveled south to Lindsborg to play the Bethany Swedes. Kansas Wesleyan also showed the Bethany boys a thing or two about the game as they clobbered them 48-0. The Coyotes then entertained Abilene again and then Chapman on consecutive days, coming out victorious in both contests. The final recorded contest of the inaugural season was against the tough Baker University team, which stopped in town on its way back from beating the Denver State College team. Baker beat KWU 44-0, and Wesleyan finished the first year with a 4-1 record. A nationwide effort to suppress football because of its brutality hit Salina and the school’s administration banished the sport from the campus for five years. Changes to the rules of football, along with a renewed interest at KWU and nationwide brought the sport back to Wesleyan in 1899. Kansas Wesleyan football sputtered the next few years, being cancelled three times for lack of interest and protests by members of the KWU administration, who still detested the sport for its lack of class and civilization, and once for World War I in 1918. In 1920, a little firepot from Ohio named Alexander Brown Mackie arrived in Salina and took over the KWU athletic program and began a resurgence of Coyote football, which has continued since. Mackie has the best winning percentage of all coaches at KWU who have more than 10 wins (.545), and has the second most wins overall (78) in his 17 years of coaching. Mackie has five of KWU’s 13 KCAC Championships, one more than Gene Bissell who earned four trophies in his tenure at KWU. Since the beginning of the modern era of the KCAC in 1929, KWU has captured 13 conference titles, third place all time behind Bethany and Ottawa who each have 17. In 1952, the legendary Franklin Gene Bissell took over a fledgling Coyote football program that had gone 42-45-13 since Mackie left in 1937. Bissell spent the next 26 years at the helm, bringing the team to the top of the KCAC once again. Bissell is the all-time winningest football coach at KWU with 116 wins, and has the third best winning percentage (.494) all-time. Bissell was elected to the KWU Athletic Hall of Fame and is also a member of the NAIA Hall of Fame (1991). Bissell retired from coaching after the 1978 season with a 116-119-7 record. The next 18 years of Coyote football saw only one KCAC championship in 1982, a player controversy involving a player who had already graduated from Florida State that landed KWU in the national spotlight on ESPN in 1995, and a dismal 67-109-1 record until 1997, when Dave Dallas came to KWU from KCAC rival Ottawa University. Since then, Dallas has returned the team to its past glory, as he earned two consecutive KCAC titles in 2001 and 2002. Since 2000, KWU has gone 27-16 and has appeared three times in post-season play (2001 American Family Insurance Charity Bowl, 2002 NAIA Playoffs, 2003 NAIA Playoffs). Dallas’ two trips to the NAIA playoffs were the first in KWU’s history. His record at KWU stands at 39-41 through eight seasons. Since the inception of football at KWU in 1893, Kansas Wesleyan has a 373-420-39 record. Since the modern era of the KCAC began in 1929, KWU’s conference record is 261-260-22 to go along with its 13 conference championships, the first of which was in 1929, and the most recent in 2003. 44 2005 COYOTE FOOTBALL MEDIA GUIDE Kansas Wesleyan All-Time Football Season Records Year 1893 1894-98 1899 1900 1901-02 1903 1904 1905 1906 1907 1908 1909 1910-13 1914 1915 1916 1917 1918 1919 1920 1921 1922 1923 1924 1925 1926 1927 1928 1929 1930 1931 1932 1933 1934 1935 1936 1937 1938 1939 1940 1941 1942 1943-45 1946 1947 1948 1949 1950 1951 1952 1953 1954 1955 Overall W L T 4 1 0 W KCAC L T KCAC Champion Head Coach Record W L T Years No Football (5 Years) 0 0 1 1 0 0 3 3 0 3 0 0 7 1 1 1 2 3 2 0 0 1 0 0 3 5 0 1 3 4 8 8 0 0 0 0 4 0 0 3 7 6 0 0 0 3 0 0 2 4 5 4 4 7 5 6 4 6 5 5 5 4 7 5 2 2 6 4 5 5 5 8 7 5 3 2 4 0 2 0 3 0 3 4 4 3 1 3 6 3 1 3 4 0 3 0 0 1 0 1 0 1 1 2 2 2 0 0 0 1 1 1 1 4 2 0 2 2 0 0 2 2 4 3 3 6 5 4 2 2 3 2 4 4 4 3 1 2 5 4 3 4 3 7 7 5 3 2 4 0 1 0 2 0 1 2 1 0 0 2 4 2 0 2 1 0 3 0 0 1 0 1 0 1 1 1 1 2 0 0 0 1 1 0 0 2 1 0 2 3 4 5 3 3 5 5 3 5 6 4 4 4 6 6 4 4 5 3 3 2 1 0 0 1 0 0 1 1 0 2 3 3 3 3 3 2 3 4 5 3 2 3 3 2 3 4 3 2 2 1 1 0 0 1 0 0 1 1 0 No Football (2 Years) A.B.
