The program contributes fundamentally to solving of problems in the medical sciences, public health, agriculture, pharmaceutical industry, genetics, cancer biology, natural products science, environmental pollution control, food industry, and innovation of safe and effective drugs. Career Opportunities Our graduates with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry will be highly demanded in a range of career fields from private companies, NGOs, and public institutions. They can confidently seek careers in medical research institutes (e.g. Cancer research), Pharmaceutical industries; Food production industries; Chemotherapeutic Industries, Biomedical labs, Chemical manufacturing industries, Hospital laboratories, Forensic labs, Medical research projects, Environmental protection and Pollution control agencies, Education; Genetic labs, University laboratories, and consultancy firms. In addition, our graduates will favorably compete for postgraduate scholarships or doctoral programs in Biochemistry applications, Pharmacognosy, Pharmaceutical Research, Molecular Biology, Cancer Studies, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, among other fields. Entry Requirements for Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry A candidate is eligible for admission to the Programme on meeting at least one of the following requirements: Having completed A-level and have two principle passes in Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Food and Nutrition, Agriculture, Physics and or Mathematics, and also passed at their sitting of O-level. Must possess a second class Diploma in relevant areas of Science and from recognized institutions. The relevant areas of science include; Agriculture, Forestry, Education, Environmental science, Ecology or related studies, from recognized/accredited Institutes. Must have passed the Mature Age Entry Examinations for the Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry recognized by NCHE in Uganda or its equivalent. Kenya applicants must have a minimum of a C+ For specialization in Environmental Economics and Policy, A candidate must have passed Mathematics with a credit and above at Ordinary Level Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science (3yrs) The Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science is an interdisciplinary program designed to provide a strong grounding in specific environmental sciences and a socio-economic context for graduates who wish to tackle complex environmental issues in a professional manner. (d) Bachelor of Science in Food Science and Nutrition Technology (4yrs) The Bachelor of Science in Food Science and Nutrition Technology is a unique program, designed to provide a broad understanding of modern food industries. The program combines theoretical studies and practical work approaches, which are applicable in a modern industrial food environment. The BSc. Food Science and Nutrition Technology, has been developed in response to the demand for graduates who can combine the knowledge of food science and technology, with an understanding of nutritional requirements and dietary analysis. Entry Requirements for Bachelor of Science in Food Science and Nutrition Technology Admission to the Programme is done in accordance with the Bugema University entry requirements for Bachelors’ degrees. A candidate is eligible for admission to the Programme on meeting at least one of the following requirements: Have completed A-level and have two principle passes in Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Food and Nutrition, Agriculture, Physics and or Mathematics, and also passed at their sitting of O-level. Must possess a second class Diploma in relevant areas of Science and from recognized institutions. Career Opportunities Our graduates will have a wider range of skills and knowledge suitable for work in both private and public sectors. The holders of this degree are highly qualified for senior positions in a widevariety of technical and managerial sectors in the food processing industries, agricultural industries, Hospitals, Hotels, human nutrition or dietary consultancies, Food research, and national bodies for food quality control and regulation. Specific career opportunities include: production supervisor/managers, Quality assurance technician/ managers; Product development technician or manager, Food researchers, Food chemists, Nutrition consultants, Food distribution managers or supervisors in International or local NGOs. Besides, the graduates may also decide to pursue masters or doctoral programs in Food Science, Food Chemistry, Nutrition, Food processing, Food Technology, Legislation, and Quality control/Regulation. (e) Bachelor of Science in Statistics (3yrs) The demand for statisticians is projected to grow further in both developed and developing countries. The Bachelor of Science degree in Statistics is designed to provide students with practical computing and a broad understanding of probability and mathematical statistics. A candidate is eligible for admission to the Programme on meeting at least one of the following requirements: Have completed A-level and have two principle passes in Mathematics, Economics, Physics and Entrepreneurship, Computer or Geography and also passed at their sitting of O-level. Must possess a second class Diploma in relevant areas of Science and from recognized institutions. The relevant areas of science include; Business computing, Accounting; Engineering, Architecture, Science education (mathematics/Economics/Physics) or related studies, from recognized/accredited Institutes. Must have passed the Mature Age Entry Examinations for the Bachelor of Science in statistics recognized by NCHE in Uganda or its equivalent. (f) Diploma in Food Science and Processing Technology (2yrs) The Diploma program in Food Science and Technology is developed to meet the increasing demand for mid-career professionals with essential skills and techniques in food science and processing technology. The program is designed to introduce students to a broad range of skills and techniques in food science and technology industry.
