M zi a g a ne From the Director “S eems there’s never a dull moment around the neighborhood lately and it looks like this summer will be very busy indeed! We are blessed with great people that care deeply about the neighborhood and its future. That’s what will make the future bright for all of us. Here at KCDC, we are gearing up to present a host of events, from the return of the beloved Asphalt Cinema to the second season of the wildly successful Kamm’s Corners Farmers Market. We are also planning a concert at Impett Park with the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra! See the associated articles in the pages that follow. Asphalt Cinema, our outdoor movie series that has been warmly embraced by the neighborhood, is relocating due to our success as a neighborhood. When the series began six years ago, the municipal parking lot behind Walgreens was a ghost town. Au contraire today! So, the site of our movie must be changed. But where? Read about the new location and our new partner on page 7. The Lorain Avenue Streetscape project has been moved back slightly. Originally slated to begin in June, it is now anticipated that construction will begin in August, with a completion date of spring 2009. The good news is that funding issues are largely resolved. We thank Councilman Keane, Mayor Jackson, and city staff for keeping this project on the front burner. Look for an expansive article on the project in the next issue! We are extremely pleased to have neighborhood resident and leader of NASA Glenn Research Center Dr. Woodrow Whitlow Jr. as our keynote speaker at our Annual Town Meeting on Thursday, June 5th at 7:00 p.m. at St. Joseph Academy. Read about Dr. Whitlow and NASA Glenn’s 50th anniversary on page 6. Also at the meeting, we will be bestowing several very special awards. There will be giveaways from area merchants during our “spontaneous raffle,” and of course neighborhood news from both me and Councilman Keane. Please join us! The meeting is free and open to all. Wishing you a safe and fun summer! As always, let us know how we’re doing. Our cover features Dr. Woodrow Whitlow Jr., Director, NASA Glenn Research Center, who is the keynote speaker at our Annual Town Meeting, Thursday, June 5th, at 7 p.m., at St. Joseph Academy. We are pleased to have Dr. Woodrow Whitlow Jr., Director of NASA Glenn Research Center, as our featured speaker on the occasion of NASA’s 50th anniversary in Cleveland. See the article on page 6. Asphalt Cinema will be back the third Friday of June, July, and August on different asphalt! The back parking lot of the West Park YMCA will be our new home. See the article on page 7. Plan now to join us there for Bee Movie. The West Park Kiwanis Club is seeking brass bands and musicians for their annual West Park/Kamm’s Corners Independence Day Parade. Community organizations, local celebrities, local politicians, and area merchants are all welcome to join the parade, too. An application can be downloaded from our website or obtained in our office. If you would like one mailed or have any questions, please call Kiwanian Cliff LaRocque at 216-252-1364. The parade starts at 9:30 a.m. at Lorain Avenue and Rocky River Drive. Come to the Kamm’s Corners Farmers Market, every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. starting June 8th through October. Buy fresh, seasonal, locally grown produce and enjoy cooking demonstrations and live entertainment, too. See details on page 16. The National Family Farm Coalition (NFFC) is holding its 2008 summer board meeting at Rivers Edge Retreat on June 29th and 30th. In addition to their business meeting, the group looks forward to touring area farms and community gardens and engaging with local food producers, advocates, educators, and legislators. NFFC unites and strengthens the voices and actions of its diverse grass roots members to demand viable livelihoods for family farmers, safe and healthy food for everyone, and economically and environmentally sound rural communities. Kamm’s Corners now has a base for a unit of the 1st District Cleveland Police Auxiliary. This new base is located at Larchwood Place, 4110 Rocky River Drive. Call Community Policing at 216-623-5080 if you have a community event that needs policing, or if you are interested in applying to become a member of the Cleveland Police Auxiliary. With sadness we learned of the death March 10th of Dr. Walt Lewin, 87, director of the Kamm’s Corners West Park Kiwanis Independence Day Parade for 17 years. Former chief of surgery at Lutheran Medical Center, he headed a team of five doctors who acted as physicians for the Cleveland Indians in the 1970’s. And, for 20 years he was a docent at the local NASA Visitors Center. His career began when he served with the Marine Corps on a hospital ship during World War II and the Korean War. Last December, he was one of seven recipients of the 2007 Pillars of Medicine Award, sponsored by Fairview, Lakewood, and Lutheran Hospitals. As the weather turns mild, you might be tempted to go fishing! If so, visit EJ’s Bait & Tackle at 3847 Riveredge (off Lorain Avenue near Fairview Hospital and the Cleveland Metroparks). Brothers Erik and Emil Katrinak live in the West Park community and saw a need for just such a shop here. “We’ve been fishing the Great Lakes and surrounding tributaries for 20 years,” said Erik. Plans are underway to organize fishing tournaments and special events. For more information, call 216-889-1561. A mellow (and free!) outdoor Jazz concert takes place at Impett Park on Saturday, June 28th, from 7 to 9 p.m. Bring your lawn chairs or blankets and a willingness to be entertained and educated. See article on page 9 for details. Brought to you by Councilman Martin Keane and KCDC. A grand opening celebration takes place at Cone Zone & Grill from 4 to 10 p.m. on Wednesday, June 11. Pick up two-for-one ice cream specials as you enjoy balloons and special guest Sponge Bob Square Pants. The new drive-through window may be operational by then, too. Say hello to owners Lucy Champa and Linda Sobieraj. The Cone Zone & Grill is at 4081 Rocky River Drive. West Park Meals on Wheels provides healthy meals for those who need them delivered to their homes. If you are 4 interested in the program as a client or as a volunteer driver, please call Karin at 216-251-6255. The Cleveland Saxon Dance Group will hold their annual Trachtenball on June 7th at the Westside Sachsenheim, 7001 Denison Ave, Cleveland, OH. A schnitzel dinner will be served starting at 6:30 p.m., followed by performances by the Adult and Children’s Saxon Dance Group. Reservations must be prepaid. Congratulations to Elgin Furniture, celebrating their 5th anniversary at 17401 Lorain Avenue. Why waste gas driving outside the neighborhood when you can shop for furniture right here? A fond farewell to Christopher Mehling, who is now Executive Director of the Lorain County YMCA. He leaves the Y in the capable hands of Monic Hill, the newly appointed Associate Executive Director. She most recently served as membership and operations director here and was with the YMCA’s Cincinnati branch before moving to Cleveland. Welcome Monic! (Pronounced mo-NEEK.) Updates will come monthly, with an extra message occasionally thrown in for news that we feel is time sensitive or of great importance to you. … by Councilman Marty Keane News from Ward 21 and City Hall Dear Neighbors: Already the Spring Edition of Kamm’s Corners Magazine… unbelievable. We are all turning the corner into a very exciting and busy summer. From Four Corners to Puritas baseball, YMCA to WPCA (West Park Catholic Academy), block parties to summer festivals, we have a lot to look forward to. Please remember to take a minute and enjoy your neighbors and your neighborhood. The City of Cleveland has certainly taken some hits, historically as well of late, and will likely continue to do so. However, what makes us West Park is the ability to remain strong and proud of where we live, work, and play. Ours is among the greatest neighborhoods in the City of Cleveland — not based on location or housing stock — but based on the quality of people who live, raise families, and grow old here. These are not the days to throw up our our hands and give up. These are the days to extend a hand to our neighbors, and hold our heads high for everything we have done, are doing, and will continue to do to keep this a great community. Speaking of holding our heads high, the Lorain Avenue Streetscape Project remains fully funded and on schedule for a grand ribbon cutting at our 4th of July Parade 2009. The majority of the work will be done in this construction season with finishing touches and detailing done next year. The Jackson Administration has remained committed despite dire forecasts in budgetary terms. Mayor Jackson and his staff fully realize what this project means to Ward 21 and the surrounding communities. The amount of commercial interest and investment has substantially increased in part due to our imminent facelift. Our neighborhood children are nearly done with another school year. This typically means our parks, streets, and neighborhoods are about to come alive again. This increased 5 activity certainly means different things to different people. I’m sure we can all agree that the top priority is keeping our children safe. The phrase of the day is “pot hole,” and it has been for the last five weeks. However, I do believe we are catching up after a horrible season for city infrastructure. If you do see, hear, or feel a pot hole, please note the address and give my office a call. I do drive the Ward often, but I need your help in order to be more effective. I fully realize some of our streets are beyond patching. I am working with a limited ward allocation for street resurfacing to get the most out of what I have. A few streets will be done in their entirety, while others will be partially completed as funds are again limited. The review of the Charter of the City of Cleveland is moving forward. As I stated in the last issue, please feel free to call me with any questions or input. I would also urge the computer savvy residents of Ward 21 to visit the Charter tab on City Council’s web site, www.clevelandcitycouncil. org. There you can find the topics being considered and weigh in at any time. This is truly a historic venture, the modernization of the Constitution of the City of Cleveland after 20 years. The dialogue has been both stimulating and intriguing. I look forward to the upcoming public forums to hear what the public input will be relating to some of the topics. Finally, it wouldn’t be a Councilman’s Corner without a Part 150 update. The Part 150 study is the federally mandated study relating to airport noise and abatement. The consultant has been selected and soon we will begin selecting a citizen advisory board. Hopefully, full disclosure and open and honest discourse will soon follow. Please call with any questions and remember the noise complaint hotline is 216-898-5220. e an Marty Ke Annual Town Meeting Cleveland Indians tickets and gifts from area merchants. He grew up in Inkster, Michigan about 17 miles west of Detroit. As a young boy in the 1960’s, he watched, along with the world, the great images of space exploration on television: the 15-minute suborbital flight of Alan Shepard, the launch of Friendship 7 in which John Glenn circled the globe three times, and Neil Armstrong stepping onto Think Spring... When he moved here, he and his wife lived downtown at Reserve Square. She worked for the City of Cleveland. Later, the Whitlows moved to Kamm’s Corners and still live in our community. “I am looking forward to speaking to the community at the coming Annual Town Meeting on the occasion of NASA’s 50 years of scientific and technological excellence,” said Dr. Whitlow. the moon in 1969. Inspired, young Woodrow dreamed of becoming an astronaut and set his sights on making that a reality. Early on, his academic efforts were focused on going to work one day for NASA. His clearly defined goal contributed to the pleasure he felt in getting good grades. “Going to school was fun,” said Dr. Whitlow. His high school counselor encouraged him to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. There, he earned his Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Aeronautics and Astronautics. “The study of things that fly in our atmosphere,” he explained. Dr. Whitlow began his professional career in 1979 as a research scientist at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. Failing the eye exam for the astronaut program ended his dream of flying in space himself. “An astronaut is cooler than a scientist,” he acknowledged. However, he was determined to contribute to the space program in other ways and assumed various positions of increasing responsibility. In 1994, he served as Director of the Critical Technologies Division, Office of Aeronautics, at NASA From September 2003 through December 2005, Dr. Whitlow served as the Deputy Director of NASA’s John F. Kennedy Space Center in Florida, and flew back and forth from Florida to his home in Cleveland. There his duties included assisting the director in determining and implementing center policy and in managing and implementing the center’s missions and agency program responsibilities in the areas of processing, launch, and recovery of launch vehicles; processing of spacecraft; and acquisition of launch services. Today, as Director of NASA Glenn, Dr. Whitlow manages an annual budget of approximately $500 million and oversees a workforce of close to 1,700 civil service employees that is supported by approximately 1,400 contractors. The center has 24 major facilities and over 500 specialized research facilities located at the 350-acre Cleveland site and the 6,400-acre Plum Brook Station site in Sandusky, Ohio. He has received numerous awards, including U.S. Black Engineer of the Year in Government, NASA’s Medal for Exceptional Service, NASA Equal Opportunity Medal, the (British) Institution of Mechanical Engineers William Sweet Smith Prize, and the Presidential Rank of Meritorious Executive. The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics named him an associate fellow in 1993. He has written nearly 40 technical papers, most in the areas of unsteady transonic flow and aeroelasticity. Dr. Whitlow and his wife have two daughters and two granddaughters. 7 Asphalt Cinema Moves to West Park YMCA See a free movie under the stars at our popular Asphalt Cinema returning for a sixth season on the third Friday of June, July, and August, but at a new location: 15501 Lorain Avenue in the parking lot behind the YMCA. The move will bring added fun, such as free family swim time at the Y before each movie starts. Also, children may romp in the newly built playground adjacent to the site. Before the movie begins, we’ll offer creative games and activities, a bubble gum blowing contest, and refreshments as in the past, starting at 6:30 p.m. The first movie, Friday, June 20th, is Bee Movie, rated PG. Ever since Asphalt Cinema began five years ago, Fairview Hospital has sponsored one of our three movies each summer. This summer, Fairview Hospital has generously agreed to be the exclusive sponsor for our entire sixth season, for which we are extremely grateful. Although free to the public, Asphalt Cinema incurs movie licensing and rental fees, along with the cost of the movie screen, projection equipment, entertainment, and refreshments. So, be sure to bring your lawn chairs and blankets and join in the fun in the parking lot behind the YMCA! Chris Mehling (left) is now Executive Director of the Lorain County YMCA and is leaving West Park to work with the Avon and North Olmsted Y’s. He leaves our local Y in the capable hands of Monic Hill, the newly appointed Associate Executive Director. She most recently served as membership and operations director here and was with the YMCA’s Cincinnati branch before moving to Cleveland. Welcome Monic! Kamm’s Article Brings Peace To Elderly Resident West Park Massotherapy …by Marilyn Osborne Last winter, an article appeared in this magazine featuring resident Jackie Smith who had started up an estate clearance and cleaning service for houses made vacant by relocation, retirement, or death. She was just starting out and I was the first to write about the business. Her mission was, and remains, to give clients peace of mind in a difficult time, while maximizing the value of their personal property. Her company, HomeSeller Solutions, is most appealing because all items are sold, recycled, donated, or discarded as appropriate. “We’re a service with a conscience,” Jackie said. “If it’s paper, glass, or plastic that can be recycled, then I make sure it is recycled. If items are in good or reusable condition like new or gently worn clothing, furniture, or non-perishable food items, then I make sure these are donated to an appropriate organization. I’ll also obtain the proper tax receipts for my client.” Recently, Jackie wrote me a letter. In it she said: A lovely West Park resident in her mid-80’s was diagnosed with cancer and knew she would not be able to stay here on earth much longer. She had read and held onto that article in Kamm’s Corners Magazine about HomeSeller Solutions, and she showed it to her niece who was her caretaker and closest companion. “You be sure to call this company when I die,” said the woman. “I don’t want you to be burdened about a house full of stuff once I pass away.” The ailing woman would remind her niece often about the article pointing to where it was kept in the open. When the woman passed away right after New Year’s Day this year, true to her aunt’s wishes, the niece called us for help in late January. Once she had all the precious mementos from her aunt’s house, we sold her aunt’s nicer things, donated her good furniture and everyday items, and recycled all the paper, plastic, glass, and metal. We discarded the little bit that remained. We swept the house clean, and it was ready for the market by mid February. The house sold this April, and I believe the new people have already moved in. The niece was ever grateful for our help and we were ever grateful to have been invited into her life to share her tears and help move her from worrying about the house to thinking about being joyful again. A different joyful, though, without her beloved aunt. Marilyn, thank you for being the first to tell the story about HomeSeller Solutions. We’ve helped a lot of people this past year and look forward to helping more. To contact HomeSeller Solutions, call 216-252-0400 or visit their website at www.ClearCleanMoveOn.com. Massage and More! All you have to do is bring your lawn chairs, blankets, and the mood to be entertained and educated for this “Blossom like” experience. This free program, sponsored by Councilman Martin Keane and KCDC, begins with a brief history of jazz, complete with samples of the various jazz styles beginning with ragtime on down to today’s classic jazz. Student musicians from St. Joseph Academy’s Jazz Band will jam along with the orchestra for the first part of the show. From there it tore through west side neighborhoods on a northeast path, crossed the Cuyahoga River near the Detroit-Superior Bridge, ripped up part of downtown Cleveland, and finally moved out over Lake Erie at East 40th Street. In 27 minutes the swirling black funnel had killed 9 people, injured over 200, and destroyed or damaged nearly 2000 homes. Emergency rooms at local hospitals were jammed with those suffering cuts, broken bones, and serious injuries. Power outages forced doctors and nurses to work by flashlight. Rescuers struggled to get into the stricken areas. National Guard patrols were brought in to protect private property and keep onlookers out. It would take a week to clear streets clogged by downed trees, utility poles, and debris, and months to repair the millions of dollars in property damages. The biggest loss of life took place on West 28th near Franklin Avenue where five people died in the collapse of a single house but the southeast corner of West Park suffered the greatest sheer destruction. The area from West 130th to West 117th, bounded by Linnet Avenue on the north and Matherson Avenue on the south, was particularly hard hit. At least twenty homes were completely destroyed leaving only piles of splintered lumber scattered across a desolate landscape. Almost every home suffered damage of some kind and backyards looked like war zones. The experience of Cy and Ethel Field of Mortimer Avenue was typical. “It lasted only one horrifying minute,” Mr. Field told a local newspaper. “We came out of the basement and our house was gone.” On nearby Worthington Avenue a bathtub crashed through the bedroom window of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Thomas at the height of the storm. Incredibly only 8 people were killed by the tornado, 9 if you count one death by heart attack. Perhaps saddest was the case of little Daniel Balint, only 3 1/2 months old, whose father rushed to save him as their home disintegrated around them. “I rushed to Danny’s crib. I had my hands on it and was touching it,” a grieving Louis Balint told reporters from his hopsital bed. “Then it hit. The wind tore the baby right out of my hands. Next thing I knew I was under timbers in the back yard.” Hours later neighbors found the child’s body five doors away. Jack Palmer, of Palmer’s Barber Shop at West 150th and Puritas, was 11 years old when the twister slammed into his house on St. John Avenue. “We heard what sounded like three freight trains coming down the street at the same time. My mother, brother, and I ran into the bedroom. Then all the windows broke. I remember the curtains and the Venetian blinds stuck to the ceiling by the wind. I woke up in a mud puddle on the next street with a broken collar bone and badly cut foot.” “Our house was completely destroyed,” says Jack. “There was nothing left but the slab it stood on and a water pipe bent all the way to the ground.” Jack and his 5-year old brother Richard spent several days in the hospital. Their mother Marjorie Palmer was more seriously injured and spent months recovering. Their father Ralph was working that evening but was reunited with his family at the hospital. For years afterward Mrs. Palmer insisted the family get in the car and leave during storm warnings. “She just wanted to be anywhere away from the house,” Jack explains. “Stormy weather made her nervous for the rest of her life.” 1 bedrooms from $425 • 2 bedrooms from $545 7%340!2+&!)26)%7 &!-),99-#! £xxä£Ê", Ê6°Ê 6 ÊÊ{{£££ÊÊÊÊ s0RESCHOOLs"EFORE!FTER3CHOOL#HILD#AREs!QUATIC0ROGRAMS s(OMEWORK#LUBs7EIGHT2OOM&ITNESS#ENTERs9OUTH3PORTS s"ODY4ONINGs!EROBICS9OGA#YCLING !-0- #LASSESs"ALLETs4AP -EMBERS2ECEIVE5P4O/FF0ROGRAMS&REE&ITNESS#LASSES Remains of a house at 12106 St. John Avenue, the hardest hit West Park neighborhood. Set back from the road with parking in front, the building with distinctive chocolate brown brick columns could easily be missed. The Before original dark brown panels above and below the windows now shine with new copper penny colored metal panels. The owners renovated the building with the assistance of the City of Cleveland Storefront Renovation Program (SRP), locally administrated by Kamm’s Corners Development Corporation. The SRP provides design assistance plus a 40% rebate (up to $25,000) for comprehensive exterior renovations and new signage for the building’s front and sides that are visible from the main commercial street. The old, rusty, outdated pole sign in the planter along Rocky River Drive was removed, as well as nine mismatched tenant signs from the front of the building. A new illuminated sign with the address was installed near the entrance to the building. The sign, also covered in copper penny colored metal, lists the names of the nine businesses within the building. Light fixtures that shine light up and down were installed in the center of each of the six brick columns to further illuminate the building. The West Valley Building is a commercial condominium association with five owners that include William E. Waters, D.D.S., Benedict H. Kim, D.D.S., Chandra D. Haria, M.D., Ajit C. Shah, M.D., and Ziad El-Hayek, D.M.D. The owners invested $39,000 in their storefront renovation project that included the front and north side of the building. According to Dr. Waters, president of the association, all the owners are very pleased with the renovation and their new signs. “The rebate enabled us to continue the renovation on the other sides of the building,” he said. Dr. Haria and Dr. Shah stated that the outstanding renovation of the West Valley Building is complete and a total success. “We are happy to be part of the renovation and improvements in the Kamm’s Corners neighborhood,” said Dr. Kim. After Dr. Hayek said, “We are very pleased with the renovation process, and thank Kamm’s Corners Development Corporation and the Storefront Renovation Program for all the input.” Congratulations to all the owners of the West Valley Building for an impressive renovation, that not only makes their building shine, but also brightens up Downtown Kamm’s Corners. For information about the Storefront Renovation Program, contact Cindy Janis at cindy.janis@ kammscorners.com or call 216-252-6559, ext. 1200. 12 Kamm’s Storefront Renovation Wins Recognition On May 6th, the 17008-17116 Lorain Avenue Building received a 2008 Preservation Award from the Cleveland Restoration Society and the American Institute of Architects, Cleveland. The two organizations have held separate awards programs in previous years with similar goals of recognizing exemplary projects and individuals who have made a significant, positive impact in the revitalization of Northeast Ohio through historic preservation. This was their first collaborative awards program. The award-winning building is home to Gino’s Shoe Repair, Allied Tax Service, Dad’s Smokeshop, Common Grounds, The Coin Shop, and Westpark Barbershop. These storefront renovations were featured in the centerfold of the previous issue of this magazine. These storefronts played a major role in the beginning of the commercial district in historic Kamm’s Corners. Although designed in the same style and with the same materials as the impressive bank building located directly west, all but three had been covered with wood siding and stucco paneling. The recent restoration has brought back the original look and feel of these simple, but beautiful storefronts. KCDC and the City of Cleveland’s Storefront Renovation Program received recognition for the project along with: Kamcor Realty Company VIP Restoration, Inc. When the gas budget for this one vehicle began teetering into the hundreds of dollars per month, they knew it was time to make a change. “Anything we can do, any move we can make to walk the walk of doing our best to be an environmentally responsible business, is a step in the right direction” said Josie ElBiry. “We love the efficiency and not having to fill up every week!” Josette Street of Southland Avenue worked with her Davita Dialysis Teammates from Strongsville, Rocky River, Middleburg Heights, and Parma to do a spring clean up of the Cleveland Police and Firefighters Memorial on Saturday, May 10th, collecting over 12 bags of debris. S Remember the Puritas Springs Park Entrance Archway? In keeping with the spirit of the upcoming West Park Historical Society tribute to the memory of Puritas Springs Park (see ad on page 9), local craftsman and coaster enthusiast, Jim Kelly (right) recreated a large scale model of the classic entrance to the park. The model has been placed on display at Puritas Nursery for all to enjoy. Jim also has built a scale replica of the famed Cyclone roller coaster in his basement. Puritas Spring Park was an 80-acre picnic ground and amusement park founded by John E. Gooding in 1898 in what was then Rockport Township. The thrilling Cyclone Roller Coaster has become a legend since its 1928 opening as the largest, fastest wooden coaster of the era, comprising 5,000 feet of track. The Cyclone made the two 90-foot drops into the dark, heavily wooded ravine, a high turn along the edge of a 500-foot valley wall, and several fast aero-dips and bone-jarring curves before pulling into the station for the next round of excitement-seeking riders. We are exposing our young women to the world. Earlier this spring, a group of students spent Holy Week in Rome,” said school Principal Audrey Menard. The trip to China was put together by the United States-China Education Council (USCEC) The group traveled to the five most famous Chinese cities: Beijing, Changchun, Suzhou, Tongli and Shanghai. They met and interacted with Chinese educators and students, and visited the home of Mrs. Xinming Tong in Changchun. Mrs. Tong teaches Mandarin Chinese at St. Joseph Academy through a grant from the United States State Department. In addition to their educational opportunities, the group experienced Chinese culture and society for a feel of real Chinese life. They also toured the sight of the 2008 Olympics. There were trips to sites of historical and cultural importance such as the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, Forbidden City, Summer Palace, Palace Museum of the Puppet Emperor in Changchun, World Famous Sculptures Garden, worldfamous Chinese garden in Suzhou, a silk factory, Oriental Venice, the historical Shanghai Bund, and the modern cosmopolitan city of Shanghai. Founded in 1890, St. Joseph Academy is the premiere Catholic high school for girls in the city of Cleveland. Sponsored by the Sisters of the Congregation of St. Joseph, a St. Joseph Academy educational experience offers young women an awakening to faith, mind and the world while reflecting and celebrating God, community, and oneself. In April, St. Joseph Academy held its first Women’s Leadership Symposium for students at the Academy. According to Academy Principal Audrey Menard “We were thrilled to offer our students access to so many distinguished women leaders in a single day.” Forty-four women leaders from the Greater Cleveland area held career sessions for students throughout the day. The keynote was delivered by Barbara Danforth, President and Chief Executive Officer of the YWCA of Greater Cleveland, who spoke about obtaining the education and knowledge women need to succeed and being open to opportunities to succeed in today’s business environment. There was also a panel discussion about women leaders in the public service sector featuring St. Joseph Academy graduate and Mayor Eileen Ann Patton of Fairview Park, Mayor Pamela E. Bobst of Rocky River, and Mayor Deborah L. Sutherland of Bay Village. They were interviewed by the advanced placement (AP) Government students on their experiences as female leaders of their respective communities and how they work to bring their communities together. Additional speakers included two distinguished women, Jacklyn Chisholm, Ph.D., the Vice President of Planning and Institutional Relations at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum and Sherri Crahen, Ph.D., Dean of Students at John Carroll University, who shared their insights on college and career readiness. Mary Ann Corrigan-Davis, President of St. Joseph Academy and the 2007 recipient of the Athena Award recognizing women in leadership, said, “The symposium is an important aspect of our 21st century education initiative. These women leaders are role models to our students. When they share their experiences in an interactive format, they provide real-world lessons that truly inspire future leaders. Our mission includes educating young women for compassionate leadership and service in a global society.” ✯ Free Neck & Back Evaluation ✯ Includes health history, private consultation with Doctor Wronko, computerized muscle stress test, and discussion of treatment recommendations. Kiwanis Club Serves West Park A non-denominational community service organization, the West Park Kiwanis Club has been serving our community for more than 80 years. Club members are volunteers from a variety of professions, who provide support through fundraising efforts, working on committees, and participating in community events. The club donates over $10,000 each year to community service projects such as Meals on Wheels, YMCA, Youth Challenge, Special Olympics, and more. These donations are all made possible through events such as their spaghetti dinners and pancake breakfasts. They also coordinate the Independence Day Parade for which participants are asked a small fee of $25. (See Around the Corners for details.) An international organization, Kiwanis is headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, and is made up of approximately 8,000 clubs in 96 countries with over 260,000 adult members. Members of Kiwanis place special emphasis on service to children and youth, both through international initiatives intended to improve the quality of life of children around the world, and through their service leadership programs, made up of about 7,000 youth clubs with about 320,000 youth members. The West Park Kiwanis works with a Key Club at St. Joseph Academy and a newly started K-Kids club at Riverside School. Both are service organizations support by Kiwanis. By the way, the name “Kiwanis” was adapted from the expression “Nunc Keewanis” in the Otchipew (Native American) language, meaning, “we trade” or “we share our talents.” Luncheon meetings are held at River’s Edge, 3430 Rocky River Drive at noon on the first and third Tuesdays of every month. Board meetings are held at the Public House on the second Tuesday of the month at noon. If you are interested in joining the club, call Cliff LaRoque at 216-252-1364 for more information. Smith, Director, Cleveland Airport System We’re glad to have this opportunity to talk to our neighbors in the Kamm’s Corners, West Park area. No doubt you’ve seen first hand the extent of the transformation the airport is undergoing, especially as you drive by the airfield perimeter. Last year, we began uncoupling the runway closest to the terminal (6R/24L) from our crosswind runway that runs parallel to Brookpark Road. This work was necessary to minimize the intersection of the two runways to increase airfield safety. However, the work has also afforded us a wonderful opportunity! The 1,000 feet we removed to uncouple the two crossing runways was added to the southern end of the runway keeping its length at 9,000 feet, but during construction, allocations were made to add yet another 1,000 feet to this runway ultimately finishing it out this year at 10,000 feet. This additional 1,000 feet will give CLE the opportunity for more “longer haul” nonstop flights. This is crucial since airports are major economic engines for their regions. CLE’s ability to offer expanded services to our air carriers can attract and retain the type of flights we need to keep our region attractive to business worldwide. There is much going on inside too! Passengers are already enjoying the new technology in the terminal and concourses with our new information kiosks including Bluetooth technology. We’re proud to be the first US airport to offer this service. Work has already begun on the new retail concessions program at CLE. This ongoing project will transform the retail, food, and beverage options in the airport to popular national brands and offer a regional flavor at the same time. Perhaps best of all, these new options will have “street-pricing.” You’ll pay at the airport the same price you would pay around the corner from your house for the same product! this is just the tip of the iceberg as they say! Everyday at CLE you can see that we are Going Places - we aren’t sitting still for a minute inside and outside. Our goal is to position CLE as the best performing airport in the industry, making it your preferred gateway to wherever you want to go. We expanded our on-airport parking options last year and, given your overwhelming response, we are in the process of adding more parking value right outside our doors, including a new valet service slated to open soon. And all We are very enthusiastic and excited about the changes that we’ve made and those yet to come. Each time you fly out of CLE you’ll see the wonderful transition, and we hope you’ll let us know how we’re doing. Code Crimson is a unified effort among a designated team of hospital staff members to provide speedy and optimal care for these critically ill patients. “After looking at best practices, including how sister hospital Hillcrest cut their heart attack response times in half, we decided to implement a Code Crimson program of our own here at Fairview,” says John Tafuri, MD, Fairview’s director of emergency medicine. “By intervening earlier, we’re starting to bring about better outcomes for our patients, and that is extremely rewarding.” “Our goal is to outperform the national benchmark,” he adds. “But when it comes down to it, the important thing is that we’re reducing the time it takes for patients to receive life-saving interventions. This is all due to an extraordinary collaboration between pre-hospital providers, the emergency department staff, and clinical and operational personnel at the hospital.” A hospital’s treatment time for heart attack is referred to as door-to-balloon time because it is measured from the moment a patient enters the hospital to the time at which their blocked artery is opened (usually with balloon inflation). With the implementation of Code Crimson, Hillcrest has been able to reduce its average door-to-balloon time to well below 90 minutes, which is the national standard established by the American Heart Association. According to Dr. Tafuri, EMS providers are an integral part of the Code Crimson program. When STEMIs are suspected, the squads can transmit electrocardiogram (EKG) readings to the hospital’s emergency department staff, which use the readings to confirm a STEMI and call a Code Crimson, so that the team is assembled and ready to swing into action when the patient arrives. The Code Crimson team is an “oncall” team with a cardiologist available 24 hours a day. When the team needs to be mobilized, every member of the team is contacted simultaneously and rushes to the scene. Members are drawn from various areas of the hospital and include interventional cardiologists, cardiac catheterization laboratory staff, laboratory and pharmacy representatives, and ED technicians, nurses, and physicians. Mom’s Cellar opens at Fairview Hospital “Mom’s Cellar is truly a pantry filled with such empathy and concern, and pure desire of our hospital family to help each other,” states Jan Murphy, president of Fairview Hospital. “I am so proud of the cellar and the generous donations from employees. It is so wonderful to help our own. And we have no idea how many of our own are in need.” Fairview Hospital, a Cleveland Clinic hospital and one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals(r), is a faith-based, notfor-profit 499-bed hospital dedicated to providing high quality, patientfocused health care. Fairview Hospital contributes significant amounts of uncompensated and charitable care to the community as well as many free health screenings and programs. For more information, please visit www. fairviewhospital.org. Food Panty to Help Employees in Need Fairview Hospital opened a new food pantry, called Mom’s Cellar, to help employees in times of financial hardship. Since December of 2007, it has been supported by employee donations and the hospital’s Credit Union. Based on an honor system, employees can visit the pantry every two weeks and help themselves to items they need. Avon Lake resident, Linda O’Donnell, director of Case Management, noticed that there were hospital employees in need due to personal circumstances, poor financial management, and just general hard times. She thought it would be helpful to start a pantry of canned goods and paper products. “I remember when I was younger I used to go to my mom’s house and ask for food and household items I needed, like paper towels or canned soup,” O’Donnell recalls. “My mom would tell me to go downstairs in the cellar and help myself. So, I thought I would use the same concept and get donations, and in honor of my mom start Mom’s Cellar for our employees.” 28 Fairview Hospital Employee Nancy Fabry checks the goods in Mom’s Cellar, a food pantry for hospital employees.
