down, we might not have had some of the
miscuts. I just wanted to show what I knew
the Peterson could do.” Those miscuts gave
the Peterson a lumber recovery factor of only 61%. Even so, they cut 240 bf in 33 minutes, 17 seconds, for an average cutting rate
of 432 BF per hour.
Unfortunately, they also realized after
the competition that the decal was out by
2mm. The art company who had designed
the new imperial sizing stickers, made especially for American customers, didn’t get
it quite right and cost Peterson’s dearly on
the board tally.
To demonstrate the versatility of the
mill, Blake and Browne cut two logs at a
time at the Shoot-Out. “If the logs are quite
uniform, it is easier to do it that way,”
Browne explained. Even though the sawyer
pulls the mill through the log by hand, the
tailer works harder.
“Just to give Craig a breather, I cut the
last two logs for him,” Browne said. “We
were trying to flatsaw off the top of the log
for the most part, and do an 8-in. drop in the
middle of the log to get our 8-in. cut wher-
ever we could. I think we lost one board to
wane. That was probably one that came off
the bottom that we couldn’t see as well.
When asked whether he was satisfied
with the logs, Browne replied with a quick
“Nah, I want much bigger, much longer
logs. I want some hard stuff. All I can say is
bring it on.” And the poison ivy? Blake is
definitely allergic, so he let Browne clean
off the logs. Browney though? “If I’m itchy
on the plane, then I’ll know,” said Browne,
laughing.

he Peterson was the first of the
swing blade mills from “down under.” Built in New Zealand, it featured a 27-hp Kohler motor and a
21-in.-diameter blade capable of making an
8-in.-deep cut. “It’s the most popular of all
the models that we make,” explained tailman Chris Browne. “It has a lot of aspects
that make it user-friendly.” Browne has
been working with Peterson’s for approximately 15 years and is now the owner of the
manufacturing company—he says he started
out pushing the broom though.
T
As with other swing blade mills, the
sawyer can doublecut the log to get a 16-in.wide board. “It is a very versatile machine.
The Peterson can do large logs, small logs,
quartersawing, shiplapping, and siding—
you name it, the mill can do it. It cruises
along quite nicely.”
“Band mills are virtually obsolete in New
Zealand,” according to Browne. “New
Zealanders in general are very rough with
their equipment, so you need something robust. They’re not big on maintenance, and
band saw mills require a lot of maintenance.
Also, the logs back home are quite big—4-ft.
[diameter] logs are nothing. We’ve got mills
that have to be flown into the bush by helicopter. They mill the logs, and then fly the
mill and the lumber back out by helicopter.”
Craig Blake was the other half of the Peterson team, and was experiencing the ShootOut for the first time. He is a dealer for Peterson sawmills for the Northeast U.S. “I’m a
part-time, weekend sawyer. I’ve been running a Peterson for about 2-1/2 years.” Blake
says he was too easily caught up in the excitement of the Shoot-Out. “If we’d slowed
