Tribute to David Zeller
On this sad occasion it is my privilege and honour, on behalf of the
Rhein-Donau Club, to share with you today our feelings at the loss
of our Honorary member, past President and Foundation member
of the Heimat Choir, David Zeller.
David was a member of the RDC Committee as Treasurer and
President for many years, and over the many years worked with
dedication in the Club. His determination was the driving force behind the development and modernisation of the club. Whether it
was a paint job or planning the many improvements of the club,
you could always rely on David.
He showed his true character by the things he did for the club, rather than in words.
David was a founding member of the Heimat Choir. He loved to
sing and, with his wife Rita, was a strong guide and influence to
further the German culture in Song. David arranged many Sängerfests around Australia over the years, and was instrumental in
the fundraising of these events.
David will be remembered, not just for the roles he held in the
club, but for his genuine appreciation and his great love for life and
the never ending enthusiasm in all that he was involved in.
Rita, on behalf of the Rhein-Donau Club our deepest sympathy to
you and all your family. You were a great team and have shared
so many social events here at the club.
David you will be deeply missed, not just for the commitment to
the club, but for the person you were.

are looking for people who wish to hold a stall or know someone

From the Secretary
Some important dates for your diary:
Saturday September 19th is the Club’s 57th Anniversary Dinner. It would be
great to see many of you attend and enjoy this auspicious occasion. Invitations
will be sent out shortly.
Oktoberfest begins on Saturday 3rd October and continues on Saturday 10th,
Saturday 17th, Saturday 24th and Saturday 31st, Friday 16th, Friday 23rd, and
Friday 20th. The Family day will be Sunday 1st November.
This year’s Christmas market will coincide with the Children’s Christmas day on
Sunday December 6th. More details closer to the day.
I advise all Club members to book early for Oktoberfest. Bookings will begin on
August 1st.
To the great credit of our new treasurer, the Club has now gone over to electronic banking. In time, once the office staff and committee members get used
to the new system the handling of the finances should be more efficiently carried out and save much signing of cheques. The protocol for enabling payments
to be made means at least two of the committee members must approve of all
transactions to make the system secure. Many thanks to Heather for this long
overdue upgrade. In this regard at least we are now in the 21st Century!!
The last intake of new members were a group of Danish men who are meeting
each month at the Club for social purposes and to keep alive their Danish language skills. We welcome them here and trust they are enjoying the Club’s facilities and kitchen meals.
Also credit must go to one of our regular bands (the Alpen Duo) for implementing the idea of a theme night for the Saturday evening dances. I hope this can
be often repeated as it added variety and a bit of fun for all the attendees.
Looking back over the last year, I can see the positive effects the newer committee members are having in all aspects on the organisational side of things. If
this continues we shall see further improvements in the running of our activities
and hopefully an increase in our membership.

MOTOWN DISCO
The first Friday of the month (except October) is Motown Night in the Edelweiss
Room and it's a great night of Motown, Northern, and Classic Soul music enjoyed by many. Come along and listen to the sounds of our youth, have a chat
with good friends, dance the night away, or better still, do all three. The music
is on 7 and 12 inch vinyl, much of it original issue, and some of it quite rare.

Heidi Kabel wurde am 27. August 1914 geboren, hatte eine mehrjährige
Schauspielausbildung.
1937 heiratete sie ihren Kollegen Hans Mahler - zwei Söhne und eine Tochter.
1947 übernahm Hans Mahler die Leitung des Ohnsorg Theaters.
1951 startete Heidi Kabel im erfolgreichen Heimatfilm
'Grün ist die Heide' ihre Karriere als Filmschauspielerin.
1954 nach einer Fernsehübertragung vom Ohnsorg Theater sprach man in ganz
Deutschland von Heidi Kabel.
1966 gab es 500 Vorstellungen vom Stück 'Tratsch im Treppenhaus'.
Sie feierte riesige Erfolge.
1998 beendete Heidi Kabel mit 84 Jahren ihre Theaterkarriere.
2010 verstarb sie im Alter von 95 Jahren.

uns mit Kaffee und Kuchen zu verwöhnen.

GUNTER BEST
In 1970 Gunter and his wife Marlene came from
Germany to Perth. Within three months he became a member of the Rhein-Donau Club and
started the German Language School. In 1971 he
formed the “Sauerkraut Gruppe”, the Carnival
Group and was also the Entertainment Manager.
Gunter was also involved in a youth group, in liaison of a Horse Riding School. At this time he started the Watchmaker School, teaching and became
the President of the Horological Guild still is to this date. He has regular
meetings and, this week, three of his pupils are graduating as Watchmakers.
In 1976 Gunter and his wife joined the Edelweiss Dance Group together
with some others such as Klaus Richter and Willi Bohmer. In 1986 he
joined the Theatre group and in 1990 the Heimat Choir. Other Group
activities were Skat, Chess and the Schlaraffen. Gunter is still an active
member of the Schlaraffen Group.
Two years running he was the organizer of the Octoberfest at the Showground and at the Fremantle Port. He was also a sponsor of the Octoberfest Raffle donating a prize each year.
Gunter was President of the Rhein-Donau Club from 1992 to1993 and
on the Committee again in the position of Vice-President from 2004 to
2015. Gunter was awarded Life-Membership of the RDC in appreciation
for all he has contributed to the club.
For “ Relaxation” he took choirs to Germany, one was the John Christmas choir
and an Aboriginal Choir. Gunter was also active in the Armadale Council for 10
years, and a member of the Rotary Club for 38 years.
Gunter, a very special thank you for all you did for the RDC and its members
throughout these years. Somehow a simple “Thank you” seems not enough, but
the committee and members do appreciate your dedication in all you did, very,
very much. We wish you all the very best and enjoy a well-earned holiday in
Germany celebrating your birthday with your brothers. Es ist nicht “Goodbye“,
es ist auf ein baldiges Wiedersehn!

A Night in Hollywood
The stars came out in June for the Club's Night in Hollywood. It was great to see
so many people dress up as their favourite movie star. From Bruce Willis to
Audrey Hepburn, everyone had a great time.
There was a special guest appearance by Elvis and our own Susie and Glen
entertained us with their lovely duet. Olive gave a fantastic rendition of New
York, New York and Anna and Ross from the Alpen Duo kept the dance floor full
all night.
Mother’s Day
On Sunday 10th May, a Mother’s Day Luncheon was served in the Edelweiss
Hall. As the mothers arrived they were presented with a rose and a chocolate,
compliments of the club.
Our chef Rudi provided an excellent meal of a choice of roast duckling or roast
pork. All the mothers and their families enjoyed the luncheon and each mother
received a glass of sparkling wine on the occasion. Ms. Olga Pfaff with all her
children, their partners and grandchildren attended the luncheon.

FROM OUR COOK RUDI,
Dear Members and Guests
After returning from a well deserved holiday in Germany and France, I am again
ready to serve you with new vigour and cook you your favourite foods.
On my travels I spent time in the Black Forrest (Freiburg im Breisgau) and
lodged with friends who are the hosts at the “Holzschlägermatte” am Schauinsland. There I sampled typical Badische Cuisine like “Leberle and Brägele”,
Badischen Wurstsalat, Kinnbäckle and many more and enjoyed every meal.
To finish my visit of Germany I visited the oldest German Inn, the “Zum Roten
Bären” which has been operating over 700 years and has some foundation
stones reaching back 1000 years. (They are of Roman Times) It was a privilege
to be invited for an “Aperitif” in the wine cellar by the owner/operator Mrs. Hansen and was fascinated by her extensive knowledge based on years of research
in all types of archives. It was followed by a fantastic meal of the highest standards representing modern Bourgeois cuisine in Germany, served with the best
of Badensian wine.
What followed were two weeks in the Province when the Lavender there was
just starting to bloom. I was accommodated in Capentras and did undertake
many excursions on a daily basis, like Mt. Ventoux, Salt, Avignon, Roussillion,
and Marseille, where I had a fantastic “Bouillabaisse at the Miramar Restaurant.
Naturally I was over indulging in all the freshest produce of the local markets
and some fantastic restaurants in that area. This was a fitting counter balance
to all the walks to see historic Roman Ruins, Ocker mines, many churches and
the Papal Palace, as well as many market and vineyards.
But now I am back in the real world and ready to face the colder time of the year
(not to speak of the wet as well, which of course we need) with a change of our
menu. We are getting requests for more fish for which we love to fulfil, but the
problem is that, in order to serve only the best and freshest, you would have to
indicate while booking, that you would like a fish dish. Similarly, it would be
helpful to us, if it was mentioned that a vegetarian meal is required.
Last but not least, we would like to share with you the overwhelming success
our smorgasbords are having. They are suitable for all occasions and you might
have heard about them. We invite you to book your next function with us and
have a delicious, worry free, successful and absolute memorable function at the
Rhein-Donau Restaurant!

Heimat Choir
O
ur performance on Saturday 27th July, went very well and it was great to
hear the participation from everyone with our Sing-a-long songs.
The Choir is having a short break as some of our members are either away in
Europe or recovering from ill health. The winter months are rather rough on our
voices, and so we shall recommence on Tuesday 21st July. I hope the numbers
will be much better by then.
We are preparing for the Club’s Anniversary and with the help of our Conductress, it will be wonderful performance.
I am having a break away leaving on the 21st July and be back by the 10th August.

ear Members,
We have had good attendance of usually 14 players each week.
When we held our Club Tournament, Reinhard Lot was our Champion with David Smith being the Runner-up. In the Plate, Lew Dawson won and I was runner
-up. Members will be presented with a prize in due course.
We welcome back Paul Miller and David Ramsay who walked the Kokoda Trail
and David Smith from holidaying in Bali.
On the 28th June, 18 members will join us for our membership dinner and we
will be entertained by the Choir.
I am sorry to report Jerry Lee, a staunch member, is ill and wish him a speedy
recovery.

ello to all our shooters,
Our group is growing very fast and at the
moment we have got 17 active shooters, which
is very good. I would like to welcome our latest
members - Jeff, Dieter and Joseph.
In June we celebrated our 47th anniversary
of the Rifle Group which was a very pleasant Sunday afternoon. The next thing will be
the Oktoberfest again and that means a lot
of work for all of us.

The Tuesday Scenic Group starts now @ 17:00hrs! This group is very busy
installing streetlights, making a new backdrop to the lower city and preparing a
new assembly area for moving sets of trains on or off the tracks without interruptions to mainline workings. The Electrical group is making progress with the
movements of locomotives on a working turntable.

WA Mandolin Orchestra

s predicted our Russian theme night was successful with beards, babushkas and bonzer (colloq. Siberian) Russian tunes by WAMO.
The dance band and raffle wound up an enjoyable night, as they will on the 1st
of August for our next theme night where we'll visit the Irish. Their music can be
similarly lively or melancholy. Come prepared to eat “ tater“ dishes and have
drinks garnished with clover.... or is it shamrocks, anyway they taste the same.
September 26th we'll get a chance to try some pasta cuisine with many familiar
and loved Italian songs. Considering Italy is historically the birth place of the
modern mandolin it's no wonder this music and the instrument are so sympathetic.
Speaking of which, last edition we left the mandolin in the hands of Italian
luthiers who developed it to it's present configuration as to material and number
of strings for a more robust sounding instrument. This led to the “Golden Age”
for mandolin from the 1890's to1920's.
Quite a few Italian players became virtuoso performers who taught and performed in the major capitals of Europe. Names such as Munier, Ranieri, Monti
and Macchiochi wrote impressive works and lesson books for the mandolin.
During this time quartets and orchestras of the mandolin family developed and
were written for. Commonly first and second voices were mandolins, with a
third voice played by an octave mandolin or mandola (tuned like viola). Guitar
(which in those days would have had steel or gut strings) played the bass and
rhythm lines. In some settings a larger almost guitar sized
mandocello was used, and the American Gibson company eventually produced
a double bass sized mandolin which was held sideways on a short leg.
But, the Gibson company is a story for another time.

Well, where is the year going
to? We have been practising
and now are preparing for our
annual Alpengaudi dance. It is
a very special occasion as it is
the 40th anniversary of the
event.
We hope that members both
past and present will come
along and help us celebrate on
September 12th. Of course we will be dancing, bell ringing and having lots of
fun on the night. . Alpen Duo will be providing the music for the evening. So
come along and have a warm and wonderful time with us.
One of our honorary members, Sieglinde Ducke, is recovering from an accident.
Unfortunately her foot is in a moon boot but nothing stops Sieglinde from dancing for too long. We are looking forward to seeing her back on the dance floor
soon.

Henry Gebauer amüsieren sich mit unseren Senioren. Wir hoffen, dass sie
recht lange bei uns bleiben.
Wünschen allen die Geburtstag feiern alles Gute und den kranken Senioren
recht baldige Besserung.
Mit dieser Gelegenheit möchte ich mich bei allen Mitgliedern bedanken für die

is a multilingual music and dance school in Perth
offering singing, music and movement classes in various languages (English, German,
Mandarin, Polish and Spanish) for children age 0 to 7 years old.
Our classes provide an excellent opportunity for children to have contact with another
language. We sing songs, play music games, learn the basic steps to different dances
from around the world and learn to play different Orff instruments. But above all we want
our students to have a lot of fun and additionally learn and improve a different language.
Children discover rhythm, dynamics and tempo of a wide range of music genres from
around the world. In addition we teach our little students some simple steps and dance
movements as visual interpretations of the songs they listen to. Creative exercises and
small craft projects are also part of the program. In older groups children start learning
