Term 3, No. 7 - 2 September 2016 2 Year 12 performs their amazing melodies – HSC Music Congratulations to the Year 12 Music students for their wonderful performances at the Music Showcase. He also thanked the parents for supporting their children in the challenging process. Students who read or presented from their works included: • Oliver Lawton - critiquing Dracula (see notes below) • Alexandra Weichert - writing a Zine • Charles Goodsir- writing and recording a political speech (satire) • Roman Vournelis - a radio play • • Nick Walker - a short story • Elena De Gouw - a dark about ‘basement prisoner’ survivors • Thomas Hebden - written story Count Dracula as ‘other’: villain or victim? Oliver Lawton’s disser tation details the way in which Coun t Dracula has been vilified by Bram Stoke r in Dracula (1897) in Colonial narratives using an original Postcolonial redefinit ion of the notion of ‘other’. Colonial readings of Count Dracula characterise him as villain; oriental ‘other’, non-Europe an, non-human, barbaric, inferior an d indeed monstrous . Oliver repositions Co unt Dracula as a victim of this thinking and gives the most infamous Vamp ire a voice. Term 3, No. 7 - 2 September 2016 4 Gallery KMB3 – HSC Art and Design Last night’s HSC Art and Design Showcase drew a huge crowd to KMB3 as the space was transformed into a gallery of wonderful paintings, drawings, objets, film, technological inventions and costume. Highlights included a bar table made from three types of wood and a blue phosophorous finish; a bike carry bag; a feathered sculpture, delicate drawings and bold paintings including the painting, at right, when life really did imitate art. Term 3, No. 7 - 2 September 2016 5 HSIE NEWS These Commerce teams really mean business Last Friday, Commerce students pitched their business ideas to an expert panel as part of Young Enterprise. Young Enterprise is the Commerce project that encourages students’ entrepreneurial abilities by guiding them through the process of running a business from concept to customer. Students formed groups, prepared a business plan and pitched their ideas for feedback, mentorship and finance. A little bit like the television show, The Shark Tank! There were some excellent pitches from LLS Publishing, Koolbab, Jake’s Bakes, Brownies for your Frownies, Iced Tea Co and many other enterprises. Special thanks to expert panelists Kaye Morehan, Tony Pearson, Suzanne Tucker, James Chin Moody and David Hamper as well as the many teachers that helped support this initiative. The next step will be a Young Enterprise Day next term. Carmelo Fedele Commerce Teacher UTS FEST UTS watches UTS watches IGS! UTS Multimedia Journalism student Tallulah Thompson filmed part of IGS’s ‘Green Houses’ project last week as part of her course work on education in the classroom. And, the visiting experts just happened to be Architecture students from UTS and the well-known architect Anthony Burke! All in all, IGS was happy to set the scene for a UTS Fest! Term 3, No. 7 - 2 September 2016 6 MUSIC NOTES Music expertise crosses to the Land of the Long White Cloud IGS’s Director of Music Alison Housley was invited to Auckland recently for four days as chief adjudicator at the NZ KBB Music Festival. Alison writes… The KBB Festival, in its 33rd year, is for high school Symphony and Chamber Orchestras, and Concert and Jazz Bands. It is the largest event of its kind in New Zealand. I was privileged to listen to 50 concert bands in the magnificent venue of the Holy Trinity Cathedral, and gave constructive feedback to each group on their technique, accuracy, musicianship, presentation and ensemble skills. It was inspirational to be part of an event that provided for an exchange of ideas through the performance of a wide range of repertoire. Even more, it was extremely heartening to witness the personal dedication of students and their teachers, and the capability of music to inspire passion, curiosity and deep listening. This of course, aligns perfectly with the goals of our young IGS musicians who consistently strive for excellence through performance and rehearsal in our own ensemble program. On the last evening of the event, I had the wonderful experience of working with the Honours Concert Band – 80 selected students of extremely high calibre from across many bands. I rehearsed the ensemble for three hours culminating in a packed-out public concert. Music is indeed a vehicle that equips us to go into the world, to embrace, experience and digest the work of others, while enabling us to make valuable connections. “The only way to change the world is to make a little noise.” Yo-Yo Ma Alison Housley Director of Music HSIE NEWS #2 Great navigation through geography Distinctions, High Distinctions and even a Top1% featured in IGS’s results in the recent Australian Geography Competition. On Friday 19th August, the Year 6 Library Leaders, Kiki Masella and Finn Barker-Tomkins were fortunate to attend the 70th anniversary of the Children’s Book Council of Australia, Book of the Year Awards and the official launch of Children’s Book Week in 2016. A highlight of the day was seeing Morris Gleitzman’s title, ‘Soon’ win the category of Book of the Year: Younger Readers, especially considering he had been a guest speaker at IGS only two days prior! His Excellency the Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove presented the winners of each category with their awards. Further information about the 2016 award winners for each category, including Early Childhood, Picture Book, Older Readers, Information and New Illustrator may be found at http://cbca.org.au/winners-2016 HSIE NEWS #3 Ross Gittins reports on the economy at IGS Highly respected senior Economics journalist for the Sydney Morning Herald Ross Gittins shared his views on the state of play in Australia – and globally – with IGS’s senior Economics classes on Monday in the David Baker Learning Centre. Ross discussed everything from the national impact of the unemployment rate in Australia to Brexit and the global impact of markets in China and the US. However, there were many silver linings including Australia’s relatively stable position and the sage advice that when it comes to the widening gap between the wealthy and the workers – the majority have to say ‘Stop!” to the politicians to reverse this trend. ALUMNI CORNER Maddie Madden shines IGS alumna Madeleine Madden (Class of 2014) was recently profiled in the Australian Children’s Television Foundation (ACTF) eNewsletter as a rising star and ambassador for Indigenous Australians. Last year, Maddie played the role of Zoe in the ABC3 TV series Ready for This, which won a 2016 TV Week Logie for Most Oustanding Children’s Program. As part of the 2016 Screen Futures Summit and Youth Media Festival, the ACTF hosted a Ready For This Live Q&A with Maddie, Aaron McGrath (Levi) and Head Scriptwriter Liz Doran, which was broadcast to audiences both in person at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image and online.
