Saturday, Oct. 3 • 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Grand Prairie Landfill 1102 MacArthur Blvd. Proof of residence in the form of a current water bill or driver’s license is required. A $1 disposal fee will be charged for each automobile tire or computer. Residential disposal only. For more information call 972-237-4555. Household hazardous waste will be collected at Trash Off from 8 a.m.noon. Motor oil, antifreeze, and other automotive fluids, car batteries, lawn and garden fertilizers and chemicals, paint (latex and oil-based), solvents and other paint-related materials, aerosol cans, pharmaceuticals (narcotics not accepted), pool chemicals, household cleaning products, drain openers, etc., fluorescent lights (bulbs and tubes), thermometers and other mercury-containing equipment, household batteries and cooking oil will be accepted. REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED for household hazardous waste collection day. Register on-line at www.gptx.org/WQ/HHW or by calling 972-237-8055. Please remember that, by law, these collection events are for household waste only. We will not accept explosives, gas cylinders, fireworks, medical waste, radioactive materials, or municipal trash. No commercial waste will be accepted. Teen Masquerade Ball Friday, Oct. 23 7-11 p.m. Dalworth Recreation Center, 2012 Spikes Teens ages 13-18 are invited to a masked ball. Join us in designing your own masks the weekend before the ball. Refreshments will be served, a DJ and door prizes. Formal attire and mask are required. Entries accepted through Oct. 1, 2009. A panel of judges will select photos most appropriate for the 2010 City Calendar. Photo must feature Grand Prairie: • Be a Kid: having fun in Grand Prairie • City services, facilities, programs, employees at work • City events • Pretty places in Grand Prairie • GPISD students, facilities, activities (only one month in calendar may feature the schools) Visit the Senior Center, 925 Conover Drive, Monday, Oct. 19-Friday, Oct. 23, for a week long series of special events, activities, trips and more, just to say thank you. Drivers on the Bush Turnpike are now allowed to continue south of SH 183 to I-30 using the new five-mile toll road that stretches from SH 183 to Egyptian Way in Grand Prairie. Currently, the main lanes of SH 161 between I-30 and I-20 are still under construction. The main lanes end at I-30, but the service road continues south to I-20 except for a detour at the railroad tracks between Main and Jefferson streets. The main lanes in this area are scheduled to be completed in 2012. www.gptx.org Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Shuttle Service The city of Grand Prairie and Kaufman County Animal Awareness Project (KCAAP) have joined forces to offer a new low-cost pet sterilization program in the city. Aiming to reduce the numbers of unwanted pets, a shuttle service is offered once a month that will transport animals from the Prairie Paws Adoption Center, 2222 W. Warrior Trail, to a new state-of-the-art spay/neuter clinic in Crandall, Texas, for surgery. Animals are picked up at PPAC at 7 a.m. and delivered back to the facility around 6:30 p.m. for discharge. Costs for the program are determined by weight, sex and species. Cost for dogs: males $50.50 – $70.50; females $55.50 – $75.50. Costs for cats: males $30 and females $40. The program also provides vaccinations, heartworm tests, heartworm preventative and flea preventive at reduced rates. Texas law requires current rabies vaccination at the time of surgery. If proof cannot be provided the animals must be vaccinated for $8. For information or to schedule an appointment, call KCAAP at 972-472-3500. Historic Highway 80 Sale on Main Shops along Main Street in downtown Grand Prairie will be showing off their wares during the bi-annual Historic US 80 Highway Sale Friday, Oct. 16-Sunday, Oct. 18. The event promotes tourism trade and traffic along historic US 80, the first coast-to-coast, all-weather highway in America. The three-state event will cover a 392 mile route – one of the nation’s longest – from Mesquite, Texas through Louisiana to Jackson, Miss. Coming Soon to the Uptown Theater Nativity Scenes Needed for Exhibit Enjoy great performances at Grand Prairie's downtown theater: Members of the West Fork Presbyterian Church will be celebrating Grand Prairie’s 100th birthday with an exhibit of nativity scenes at the church located at 908 Santerre Drive, Grand Prairie. This event will take place Saturday, Dec. 12, 11 a.m.- 4 p.m., and the public is invited to participate in this memorable occasion. If you have a nativity scene (big, small, new or old) that you would like to display, please contact any of the people listed below who will furnish you information for registering your display. Only 20 tables will be set up for display of approximately 80 scenes, so please call in your reservation early. Light refreshments will be served.
