Dear Friends, It is my pleasure to thank our Starlight Award honorees, Neil and Lois Gagnon, for their support of Mayo Performing Arts Center. The Gagnons have been steadfast contributors to numerous important causes within our community, including the arts and MPAC. Their generous gift to our recent capital campaign helped us surpass our goal. It helped to fund essential and vital improvements to our Front of House areas, including the expansion and beautification of our lobby and plaza. I would also like to thank our John T. Cunningham Award honorees, Bruce Jacobs and Kenneth Levy of Jacobs Levy Equity Management, in recognition of their longstanding and generous support, including two capital campaigns and the Youth Arts program. Their significant contributions will help our education and outreach programs continue to grow and thrive in our community and beyond. For that, we are extremely grateful. Congratulations to our Starlight Ball Committee for putting together this evening’s gala. Year after year, the committee surpasses itself in providing us with an outstanding evening, including a great selection of silent auction items, wonderful entertainment and memorable moments throughout the evening. The committee’s organization and dedication to this event each year ensures that tonight will be a resounding success. Thank you to my fellow trustees for your leadership and guidance in support of this important arts organization. You give tirelessly of your time, services and resources to keep the Theatre on sound footing. Our MPAC staff ’s hard work and stewardship of this wonderful arts center are greatly appreciated as well. Their efforts have led to the Theatre becoming a cultural jewel and an economic engine of Morristown. Last, but certainly not least, thanks to all of you for your support of this important fundraising event. Enjoy this evening of entertainment and dancing with the knowledge that your generosity is supporting MPAC’s arts education and community outreach programs for the diverse population we serve! Sincerely, Joseph M. Goryeb Chairman, Board of Trustees What We Do Tonight What we do tonight is to try to keep The wonder of the performing arts alive; What we do tonight may not cure the stricken; Nor fill the bellies of a starving people; Nor send the ghetto child to camp; What we do tonight might... just might... in a time of special need Lift the spirits of a dying man Or feed the soul of a woman who’s lost her faith Or fill a small child’s heart with inspiration. What we do tonight may not save lives, but What we do tonight can make those lives just a little more worth living. -- Bud Mayo 1986 Welcome to the Starlight Ball! Dear Friends, Welcome and thank you for attending our 17th Annual Starlight Ball! We are thrilled that you have joined us for this wonderful evening of entertainment, dancing and fundraising that celebrates the Mayo Performing Arts Center. The Mayo Performing Arts Center serves the Northern New Jersey area with over 200 performances annually that touch the lives of over 200,000 patrons, including over 40,000 children. For over 20 years, we have brought the world’s greatest entertainers to our hometown, provided vibrant arts education experiences for children, and served as an economic engine that drives more than $15 million in annual revenue to the area. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to our honorees, Neil and Lois Gagnon, and Jacobs Levy Equity Management, for their support of our Theatre. I also thank Broadway performer Hugh Panaro, who will be entertaining you tonight along with our own talented Performing Arts Company. Every year, the highlight of the Starlight Ball is when our Performing Arts Company takes the stage. These talented young performers volunteer their time and serve as our ambassadors, performing at many venues throughout the year, including hospitals, senior centers and for nonprofit organizations. We are so proud of their dedication and hard work. It takes a small army of dedicated people to make this great fundraising event possible. This includes the Starlight Ball Committee, MPAC’s hardworking staff, and our committed Board of Trustees under the leadership of Joseph M. Goryeb. This is truly a team effort to organize the Starlight Ball every year and make it a night to remember! Thank you for supporting our most important fundraising event of the year and the Theatre’s mission to present a wide range of programs that entertain, enrich and educate the diverse population of the region and enhance the economic vitality of Northern New Jersey. Enjoy the evening! The Hampshire Companies proudly supports the Mayo Performing Arts Center and its mission to make theatre education accessible to communities throughout northern New Jersey. hampshireco.com Mayo Performing Arts Center has an impact on Morristown and the surrounding communities that goes far beyond the world-class entertainment that takes place on our stage. From outreach programs at Neighborhood House and Children on the Green, to free events such as Music Beyond Borders, to education programs that take place at area schools and at the Theatre, MPAC enthusiastically continues to be an arts leader, a trusted community partner and an essential gathering place. Highlights from the past season include: Concerts • Over 200 concerts, shows and events, including headliners, emerging artists, school group presentations and more. • Over 200,000 people were served by MPAC programs, including ticketed events, outreach activities and education programs. • MPAC’s partnership with the New Jersey Ballet drew over 12,000 people into Morristown across 14 performances during the holiday season for the production of The Nutcracker. • MPAC drew audiences from all 21 NJ counties, as well as New York, Pennsylvania and other surrounding states (even a few from Europe and Australia!). • Our economic impact on the region was over $15 million. (Americans for the Arts Economic Prosperity Calculator) • MPAC ranked as the 38th most attended mid-sized PAC in the world (Pollstar mid-year 2015 rankings); and a top 20 tourist location in the state (NJ Biz), based on attendance. Education • Approximately 40,000 children and their families were touched by MPAC educational events and family programming. • Over 660 students participated in Performing Arts School programs; Due to limited space size and excessive demand, nearly 100 children were placed on waiting lists this past year and couldn’t be accommodated in our programs. MPAC is currently exploring ways to overcome this challenge. • The Education Department’s Spring Musical Les Misérables, with a cast of 65, was performed to over 3,500 people over four performances, and was a rousing critical and popular success. • MPAC and the Morris School District completed a three-year sequential residency program in which several hundred children participated. • MPAC’s long-running free programs at Neighborhood House and Children on the Green continue to be conducted on an annual basis. • The Performing Arts Company performed at over 30 local fundraising events. • Over 90 students were honored as Music Students of the Month. • Over $7,000 was provided in PAS scholarships to local students in need. • MPAC served as Region 4 host to the statewide Poetry Out Loud competition. Visual Arts and Outreach • Over 200 New Jersey-based visual artists had their works displayed in our two galleries • In partnership with Morris Arts, the free Music Beyond Borders program returned to the Morristown Green with four free performances, with an attendance of over 2,000. • MPAC continued to offer the Theatre at low cost to non-profit partners such as New Jersey Ballet, New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Morristown Festival of Books, First Night Morris County and Morris Education Foundation’s Morristown’s Got Talent. Building and Capital Investment • MPAC continues to reinvest in creating a better experience for patrons, including a $2.5 million front of house expansion that improved patron services, increased number of restrooms and modernized the look and feel of the venue. • To help alleviate parking issues, MPAC instituted a free shuttle service for patrons to and from the Dehart Garage, and worked with the Morristown Parking Authority to let patrons pre-pay their parking at the box office. Community • Made discounted tickets available to Morristown based senior and special needs groups for select events. • Donated hundreds of tickets to area organizations, schools and non-profits for their fundraising efforts. • Donated approximately 2,000 tickets to area non-profits to provide arts experiences that their constituents may not have otherwise been able to afford. • Donated approximately $31,000 in space and equipment rentals to community organizations who use MPAC’s facility. • Has over 150 local residents who serve as volunteers and ambassadors. • Held 4 free lectures for the community on various topics, drawing approximately 1,500 attendees. • Maintained the presitigious designation of Major Presenting Organization by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. In 2012, Hugh was honored with the Edwin Forrest Award for his long-term contribution to the theater. As a concert artist, Hugh has performed with major symphony orchestras all over the world and had the privilege of performing in the world premiere of Penderecki’s Te Deum at Carnegie Hall.
