Hello and welcome
to Chatterbox!
Welcome to the Spring issue of our
magazine. This issue is bigger than
ever and packed full of all the latest
news from our nurseries, after school
clubs and training centres.
The festive season was a very busy
time for the nurseries who held
spectacular plays and carol concerts.
JACE were very busy too as they
sponsored the star studded ‘Young
Trainee of the Year’ Award in London.
As we speak, the Playsafe clubs are
preparing for the summer holiday and
planning lots of exciting activities for
the children to take part in.
Don’t forget to visit our fantastic new
website this month too!

As part of the Jancett Group’s initiative to
encourage outdoor play and the caring
and nurturing of animals, we would like to
introduce some new arrivals at Startel and
Gaytime Nursery to you… two Rabbits and
a Guinea Pig!
The children adore looking after them
in the week but our three new arrivals,
along with older rabbits, Ruby and Belle
need caring for at the weekend too and
that’s where you come in. The animals are
ready and waiting to come home with you
in their new cages. All food, bedding, diet
sheet, bowls etc will be provided.
If you would like to care for one of the
animals over a weekend, please make
your nursery manager aware and she will
arrange a suitable date for you.
All we ask is that you do not have any
other pets that would harm the rabbits and
that they will be kept in a shed in your
garden or in a cool area of your home.

Hospital’s New Life Appeal
Jancett Baby Unit were keen to help raise
money towards the New Life Appeal for
the Neo-Natal Unit at the local Queen
Mary’s Hospital for Children.
The appeal hopes to raise £50,000 to
buy the neo-natal unit brand new
equipment, so it can care for its tiny and
fragile patients better, as well as
improving facilities for staff and parents.
All donations will make an enormous
difference to the lives of premature or
sick babies and their families across
Sutton and Epsom. If you would like to
get involved or make a donation, please
call Queen Mary’s Hospital on telephone
number 020 8296 2000.

NEW!
Child Protection Qualification
Breaking News
Gail & I were very excited to be invited
to the launch of NEW
CHILD PROTECTION qualifications in
London. This qualification will put child
protection and their well being right on
the map.
It is going to be a Level 3 VRQ and I
would recommend that as many people
as possible complete it. I was very
pleased that JACE was one of the ten
centres that had already been given a
licence for this qualification. (Others
will of course follow.)
As is normal after a launch of a new
qualification it takes some time for all
the paperwork to be completed but I
would think that we will be ready at JACE to roll with this qualification later
this year.

Beds this way
Swimming Pools
Waking up yet again with a
back-ache, (No, it’s not old
age! No, it’s not happening to a
senior person!) I dragged John off
to the Ideal Home Exhibition.
“Just a bed!” I promised him, as he
complained he did not want to be
persuaded to buy items he did not
need.
Just inside the exhibition hall were
fantastic swimming pools. Being a
person of vision and too much imagination, I tried hard to
persuade my husband of 44 years
standing that we needed a pool for
the nurseries. To no avail - he
convinced me it would get
vandalised, the upkeep of the pool
and contents would be
troublesome, and storage in the
w in ter w ou ld be ni gh on
impossible!
We moved on, and there - just on
the corner - I spied “Marquees”. All
colours; red, yellow, blue, orange
and green. John tried to keep
walking but I had stopped, and
knowing how easily I get lost in
such places, he had to come back,
and yes, he gave in and let me buy
12 marquees for the nurseries.
Hurrah! We can start putting our
inside curriculum outside.
Moving upstairs, we found birds,
butterflies and jungle netting.
Again, John (really as enthusiastic
as me) helped me choose and buy
an assortment of items for the
nurseries.
Finally we found the bed
department! Being tired, we were
now happy to lay down and choose
our bed. Hopefully, it will arrive
soon!

Skills For Life Centre
In February this year,
JACE opened a brand
new centre called Skills
For Life.
Based in the grounds of
Startel Day Nursery, the
aim of the training
centre is to offer basic
and key skill support to
JACE apprentices and
staff and help with their
individual needs or
additional requirements.
Skills For Life provides
holistic care and
support in a friendly
and
personalised
environment where the
students can work on
their key skills in a
relaxed setting.
Currently, the centre
assists 16 apprentices
and staff members.
The centre is managed by
Amanda, and the Head
of Pastoral Care is Elaine.
The team is also made up
of Davorka, Grace, and
Alistair who work closely
to cover all areas of
support either at the Skills
for Life centre in
Wa l l i n g t o n ,
or by
travelling to see the
apprentices or staff in
their own setting.
Alongside basic and key
skills support, the Skills for
Life centre can help
promote social skills and
assist apprentices with
their confidence and
interaction with others.
Whether the apprentice
or staff member wants
help with their course or
would like mentoring,
confidential advice or self
esteem building, the
devoted team are on
hand and happy to help.

A CAUSE FOR CELEBRATION for our Young Mums
The Young Mums to Be groups had a
celebration day in March to recognise
their achievements while with JACE. The
young mums at the Bromley and
Wallington offices attended weekly
groups during pregnancy and after
having their babies. They completed a
twelve unit portfolio in understanding
health and safety, understanding their
pregnancy and birth of their babies, how
to budget within their homes, and what
to do for education or work upon leaving JACE.
All the young mums produced beautiful work
and built up some lovely friendships along
the way. All this, when the working mums of
this world might prefer to be taking it easy
and spending time at home on their
maternity leave!
We would like to take this opportunity to wish
the groups luck and health with their new
families and within their chosen careers.
We look forward to their visits and calls in
letting us know how they are getting on.

BBC CHILDREN IN NEED APPEAL
On Friday 17th
November,
children from both Jancett and
Playsafe helped support
Children in Need.
All proceeds from the nurseries
and club’s events raised well
over £600 for Children In
Need.
Activities included a fancy
dress Cowboy Day and a
Cook’s Day when the children
wore chef’s uniforms and
made delicious food for the
adults to taste at their
afternoon party. There was
also a magical Peter Pan Tea
Party for the babies and little
ones to enjoy.

PYJAMA PARTY FOR CHARITY
Friday 17th November was Children in
Need Day at Jancett Baby Unit. To help
raise money for this worthy cause, we
held a pyjama party. All of the children
arrived in their pyjamas and so did the
staff. Throughout the day we did lots of
fun activities. We decorated ‘bananas in
pyjamas’ and did lots of ‘free expression’
painting. Then, in the afternoon, we had
a tea party and ate delicious treats that
we made. We also danced to all of our
favourite songs and had a wonderful time

outfits with their friends and seeing the
adults look so different. At tea time, we
held a party and enjoyed lots of scrummy
treats and cakes. At the end of a very
busy day, we were extremely tired, so it
was handy we were all ready for bed!
The day nursery joined in too. The Jancett Day Nursery & Baby Unit

FANCY DRESS AT BRIGHT CHOICE
“My name is Anna. I have
been with Jancett for 2 and a

started Jancett, I was an
e2e student and a student at one
of the nurseries. When I
completed my e2e, I moved up
on to my level 2 which I have
now finished.
I was a student in one of the
nurseries for 3 months, and then
employed as a staff member for 3
days a week so that the other two
days I could have as study to
work on my level 2 qualification.
When I finished my level 2, I went
straight on to my level 3 which I
am really enjoying. During my
time at Jancett, I have achieved a
lot of knowledge on childcare
and had a lot of help with all my
coursework from all the staff and
assessors.”
Last December was a very busy month at Bright Choice
Day Nursery with the children taking part in lots of fun
festive activities. Santa’s little helpers busily prepared
Christmas gift bags to bring home to their families, hand
painted a life sized Christmas tree onto the nursery wall
and hosted a fancy dress party attended by, among
others, Superman, the Red Power Ranger, a princess and
several fairies. The children enjoyed a surprise visit from
Santa Claus followed by a delicious dinner prepared by
the nursery’s wonderful cook, and they still had one final Anna
treat in store: a visit from the world famous Hughie the
Magician. Ta dah!

Story Book Fun
Jancett Day Nursery also celebrated World
Book Day with a fancy dress party. The
children dressed up in costumes that
related to a favourite story. The children
remembered their stories, and some
brought toys and figurines of their
favourite characters too.
We had a wide variety of characters
including: Cinderella, Belle from Beauty
and the Beast, Spiderman, Peter Pan, Tinkerbell, Superman, Noddy, Hug, the Sheep
Fairy and the Very Hungry
Caterpillar.
The children ate gingerbread men at their
tea party, plus pizza, sausage, cheese
chunks, and cup cakes. We discussed who
wrote stories and gave children a brief
explanation of what an author is.
I would like to thank our parents for the
support and effort they made in supporting
the World Book Day Party. A big thank you
to all staff involved too, especially our
cook who helped me with the gingerbread
men and preparing our tea party.

Rainbow Room’s New Pets
Jancett Day Nursery gained some new pets in their
pre school rooms recently. Stick insects, no less!
Startel Day Nursery gave us the stick insects, so we
would like to say a big thank you to them all.
We have painted some pictures of our new pets,
and displayed them on our wall. We have
learnt how to care of our stick insects and
some of us have even been brave enough to
hold them already!

The children were asked to bring in an

“I started with the
Jancett Group of
Day Nurseries in
September
2004. I had just
finished my NVQ
Level 2 at college
and decided that I
wanted to go out to work.
I then applied for Group Leader position
in Family Room at Bright Choice Day
Nursery. I had an interview that I thought
went well. I then got a phone call a few
days later to tell me that I had got the job.
I was so pleased that I had been promoted
and that I had done this for myself.
So now I am an NVQ Level 3 qualified

now on the waiting list for the transition

I then decided that I wanted to do the

At first I was nervous but excited that I had
a job and was still training. I got half way
through my Level 3 and didn’t think I could
go any further, but, I got a lot of support
from my assessor, Sharon P and also my
manager, Sharon C. I did find it hard, and
at times I wanted to quit, but I carried on
and studied at home every night after
work. I would do 2-3 hours studying after
every day at work and about 5 hours at
the weekend.
Community Collages
Pollyanna Day Nursery created some
beautiful and thoughtful wall displays
based on the theme of ‘People Who Help
Us in Our Community.’ (See them below)
When I was just finishing off and my
course was coming to an end, I was
stressed but excited that it was near an
end.
Then, I was finally finished! It was such a
relief and so nice to know that I had
completed my apprenticeship.
I got a phone call a few weeks later to tell
me that I had passed and a few weeks
after that I got my certificates. When I
showed my family, they were so proud of
me and thrilled, that they took me out to
celebrate.

“I started my training with JACE
on 3rd June 1997, in which I was
very nervous and very shy. I had wanted to work with children since I was a little
girl and finally my dream had come true.
My work base was Gaytime Day Nursery and
my room was Bunnies Room. I really enjoyed
it and was trained well by the staff.
As time went on, I became less shy and
nervous and grew more confident (which was
mostly down to Chris Pritchard, who had
always believed that I could do it.)
My course was very important to me and I
worked very hard at work and at home and
completed my NVQ Level 3 in Early Years in

The children enjoyed their weekly day trips and the

Luckily for us, they kept a photo diary while they were
out and about at their local football club, busy
cooking, or creating fantastic works of art and wall

Helpful Advice to Reduce the Spread of Infections
This is the time of year when the flu virus
and unpleasant bugs are at their most
prevalent. Washing your hands can give
you some protection and minimise the risks.
Which soap you use is less important – it is
how you wash your hands that matters.
Read these helpful tips from the Health
Protection Agency which will reduce the risk
of infection and keep us healthy both at
work and home:
It may seem obvious, but
people are not doing it
enough.
Hand washing is one of the most
important ways of controlling the spread
of infections among young children and
adults, especially infections that cause
diarrhoea and vomiting and respiratory
disease.
The Health Protection Agency have
produced a useful guide we can all
follow, whether we are in a childcare
setting or our own household.
Always wash your hands:
Whenever hands are visibly dirty.
Before and after handling wounds.
Before preparing, handling or
eating food.
After visiting the toilet.
After being out in public places.
Remove jewellery (plain wedding band
accepted) and roll up sleeves.
Wet hands first using warm running water.
Apply soap and rub hands together
vigorously for a minimum of 10-15
seconds, ensuring contact with all areas of
hands and wrists. Pay particular attention to
thumbs, fingertips between fingers, and
under wedding ring, as these are the areas
most commonly missed.
Rinse hands thoroughly under warm running
water removing all lather.
Dry thoroughly with paper towels.
Use elbow to turn off if elbow-operated mixer taps are available. If not, use a paper
towel.
Dispose of paper towels in domestic waste
bin.
Use foot pedal of waste bin to lift the bin,
NOT YOUR CLEAN HANDS!
Or use a paper towel if a foot pedal is not
available.

Protection Agency, visit their website:

‘Sea’ the World!
A typical day at sea consists of art and

Port days (depending on your shift) might
mean that staff will have the morning off

description is simple. I have to entertain
children
using
a
comprehensive
programme and within a safe, secure
environment that is second to none.
An extra perk of the job is that once the
staff finish work in the evening – usually
late evening! – we are able to go out on
deck, visit the on board theatre, or visit the
cinema or restaurants ourselves.
The job can be challenging, but it is both
exciting and rewarding. Knowing you have
made a child’s holiday is a great feeling,
and to experience this - as well as seeing
the world for yourself - well, why would
you want to be anywhere else than at
sea?!
Daniel,
Qualified JACE Apprentice, Wallington
The age groups are broken down into
2-4, 5-8, 9-12 and 13-17 years with each
age group having their own room
supervised by qualified, dedicated staff.
While on board, each group has access to
the quality state of the art equipment and
materials the cruise ship provides.

Special Feature
The Sky’s the Limit!
Having just flown long
distance with Gulf Air, I
was intrigued to see a
stewardess in a slightly
different uniform, with her
name on her apron, along
with the job title ‘Nanny’.
Nosy little me asked each
of the stewardesses on the
4 planes that I travelled on
what they do, how they
train and their job
opportunities. I think they
thought I had the wrong
connotation of ‘nanny’.
This is what I learnt. The
‘Sky Nannies’ are trained
via Norland College for 5
days only!! After this, they
are expected to be able to
deal with babies and
children up to 12 yrs.
On my way home, being
bored stiff for 24hrs, I
decided to really get some
information from a Sky
Nanny called ‘M’. She was
very sweet and she
certainly worked very hard
on this flight as we had 7
babies and children who
cried the whole time. Yes,
the whole time. That’s 24
hours worth of crying!
She helped the parents
comfort the babies by filling
bottles with boiled water to
make up a feed or
pre-boiled water as a drink.
If the parents had older
children, she took them 3 at
a time to the other end of
the plane and read stories,
played Lotto or just talked
to them. She also fitted up
cots for the babies to sleep
in, helped with the seat
belts for take off, landing
and during turbulence and
offered to re-sit families
separated due to seating
arrangements etc.
I asked the nanny what was
the scariest thing she has
had to deal with. Her reply
was a ‘Febrile Convulsion’.
Now, being a First Aid
Trainer, I would have
expected this to have been
covered in the training.
‘M’ then told me it is not
unusual for them to care for
sick babies going to various
hospitals around the world.
When I returned to my seat,
I realised why I felt so hot.
The air conditioning was
centrally controlled on the
plane, so it wasn’t just me
having a hot flush then!
I will keep an eye out for
Sky Nannies when I fly next.
In fact, my bags are
packed, passport is in order
and vaccination is done.
Up, up and away!

Young Mums to Be: Gemma
“My name is Gemma and I am
19. I have been with my
partner for 1 year and a
month. I started a YMTB
course when I was 11 weeks
pregnant. I never wanted to
have a baby at such a young
age. I always wanted a baby at
22 or 23.
Before I fell pregnant, I studied
a travel course at Merton
College. When I completed the
course, I wanted to be a holiday rep and go abroad for a
couple of years but when I finished the course, I decided to
work to save some money, so I
got a job in Sutton Palace Super bowl. I worked there for a
month and that’s where I met
my partner.
I then started thinking about
getting another job so I started
working in a hairdressers and
also started studying a hairdressing course at Carshalton
College. I then decided not to
do hairdressing as it wasn’t
what I wanted to do, so I got a
job in Debenhams as a sales
advisor, where I worked for 3
months.
I then found out in the 2nd
month of being there that I was
pregnant, so I left and my
partner and I had to decide
whether to keep the baby and
then we did. I had to tell my
family about it.
When I told them, they were
really supportive but my mum
and dad said I was too young
to have a baby and it would
ruin my life. But, they knew I
wanted it, so they stood by and
helped me out with everything.
I went for my first scan on the
22nd December with my
partner, where we saw our baby for the first time. It was so
nice just looking at the baby
and then my partner and I
were so proud and happy and
couldn’t stop smiling. I then
went for my 2nd scan with my
mum.
When I found out it was a boy,
I told my partner, and everyone
was so happy for us, so my
mum and I went shopping and
brought a babygrow in blue
and a baby-name book, and
that’s when I saw the name,
Callum. My partner and I were
both happy with the name, and
now we have a baby boy
called Callum who is 2 and a
half months old. It’s the best
thing that’s happened to us.
We are both so proud.
I have now completed my
YMTB course. It took me four
and a half months to complete
my course, and now I am
going to be starting an NVQ 2
course and Callum is going to
nursery. I want to gain more
experience until I find out
exactly what I want in life, so I
can be a good, hardworking
mum who can give my son
everything he wants.”

On Monday 4th December 2006, the Greater Hollington Young Women’s Project held
a presentation evening to celebrate its success since it began in 2004. The Young
Women’s Childcare Project, funded by the Greater Hollington Partnership working with
JACE, Hollington & Robsack Playlinks, Horizons College and Tressell Training, has
provided an out of school child care course for small groups of young people aged
14-19 years.
Since it began, twelve young people have completed a Level One National Award in
‘Working with Children’, and in December, students Bekki, Samie, Sophie and Naomi
were awarded their certificates by JACE’s Brenda in recognition of their achievements
on the course last year.
Welcome to the Team
Laura joined the JACE Bromley team in January 2007 and what a great start to the year
it has been. So far Laura has worked with all
of the candidates at the Bromley office giving support, teaching, observing and working
towards her own A1

Laura has also helped to set up a new project
in Bexley, giving her all to make sure the
learners are happy.

200
2007 was the fourth year of the
Surrey Skills Fest’, and once again, I
had the opportunity to represent JACE at this fantastic event!
Armed with my packed lunch and
directions, I made my way on a very
cold morning to Sandown
Racecourse, Esher. I was met by my
colleague Marie and we made our
way to the racecourse centre to find
our name badges.
For the Art and Craft theme, we had dyed pasta
and thread – to make Pasta Necklaces. This
worked really well and the students enjoyed
making them for each other. I quite enjoyed it
and proudly wore mine too!!
The first aid didn’t work quite as well as
expected, as a lot of the students found the doll
quite scary. The boys enjoyed rating each other
out of 10 on who could put a nappy on
correctly which was quite amusing, but they
learnt fast and were experts by the end.
I thoroughly enjoyed another year at the Skills
Fest and would like to thank Surrey LSC for
organising the event. Also a big thank you to
Marie for accompanying me and to Anne,
Rosemary, Alison, Nicky, Lynne and Gail for
attending the event too.
Here’s to Skills Fest ‘08!
