he Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce’s
recent membership event garnered over 180 new members in
two days.
“We had an incredible team of business and community
leaders that led the charge,” said Chamber President and
CEO Bill Miles. “It was a record-setting membership event
and we couldn’t have done it without the 100+ member
volunteers who made it happen.”
The voice of business in our community was strengthened
in a very big way, as member volunteers reached out to
others in the business community to let them know what the
chamber has meant to their business and how it makes a

community sessions at Bluffton Rotary Community
Center/Oscar Frazier Park on June 25 and 26 from
4:00 to 7:00 p.m.
The collaborative sessions invite the Bluffton
community to come together to identify Bluffton’s
core values and share their input for Bluffton as a
community where residents, business and economic
development thrive along with visitors and the travel
and tourism industry.
The sessions will be led by Dr. Simon Hudson,
director of the SmartState Center of Excellence in
Tourism at the University of South Carolina, along
with researchers from USC Columbia and USC
Beaufort.
The community is invited to join in the brand
development discussion and encouraged to come
ready to provide ideas.

The chamber’s Small Business of the Year
Awards luncheon was the highlight of the week’s
events. New this year, two local businesses were
honored with the prestigious awards recognizing
both a Successful Start-Up of the Year as well as
the Small Business of the Year.
“Downtown Deli and Downtown Catering
Company, the 2012 Small Business of the Year
Award recipient, along with Mindstream Academy,
our inaugural Successful Start-Up of the Year Award
winner, are members that are distinguished by
their success, and they also serve as an inspiration
to others,” said Bill Miles, chamber president and
CEO.

Member spotlight: Dino Calamari

From t-shirts to monogrammed beach towels, ITS Classics
has established itself as one of the Lowcountry’s small business
success stories. When Dino Calamari, president and owner, set
up shop with his father in Coligny Plaza, the year was 1984 and
the Island had what he refers to “as a slower pace.” Fast forward
to today, the Lowcountry has expanded and ITS Classics has
developed right along with it, offering a uniform work and sport
line, as well as screen printing and embroidery.
“As one of the first resort shops, we had a hard time stocking
what we needed - Hilton Head Island named apparel,” reminisces Calamari. “So we
decided to produce our own resort apparel and Island T-Shirt Sales was born, now
known as ITS Classics.”
These days, they’ve got you covered. From the Island’s well-visited Top of the
Lighthouse to Sonesta Resort Hilton Head Island, and many more Island retailers,
ITS Classics apparel, retail items including cups, bags, keychains and duffles, plus
their popular Just Towels division have become synonymous with the Lowcountry.
“Like any business, it evolves and you follow that. The whole path and plan,
life kind of maps it out for you,” says Calamari with a laugh. Where’s it leading

national home sales show strong surge
U.S. sales of new homes rose in April with strong gains indicating the housing recovery continues to strengthen, nearly matching the
fastest pace in five years and driving median prices to a record high.
New home sales increased 2.3 percent in April from March to a seasonally adjusted rate of 454,000, according to the Commerce
Department. That’s only slightly below January’s pace of 458,000, which was the fastest since July, 2008.

The partners plan to spend approximately $500,000 in

wsav-tv earns five regional
edward r. murrow awards
the hilton head shore notes recently won a first
place medal in the small chorus division at the regional
competition in Daytona, FL in April. In addition, six Shore
Notes members also competed with Jacksonville Harmony,
which placed first in the mid-size chorus category.
WSAV-TV NBC, which serves the
Lowcountry and the Savannah market,
recently won five Regional Edward R.
Murrow Awards for excellence in television journalism
including the organization’s top three categories. The
announcement was by the Radio Television Digital News
Association, which has been honoring outstanding
achievement in electronic journalism with the Murrow
Awards since 1971.
beaufort memorial hospital recently opened their
newly expanded LifeFit Wellness Center. The medically
supervised exercise facility as well as the outpatient and
cardio-pulmonary rehabilitation facilities have been
relocated to the first floor of the hospital’s new medical
and administrative center, located across from the main
hospital campus.
This continued an impressive trend as WSAV has been
recognized with 26 Regional Murrow awards for excellence
in journalism over the past six years. Among the honors,
the coveted Murrow Award for Overall Excellence. It’s the
fifth time in the last six years the WSAV’s entire staff has
been so honored.
