For those who cook … how in
the world do you do it? A jumble of
ingredients you’ve never heard of
(Who really has rice wine vinegar
handy in their cabinet?), 15 steps
of instructions and a mess of a
kitchen, only to discover that in the
last step you are instructed to take
out the dough you prepared 12
hours ago. What dough? Scrap the
whole thing, let’s go out to eat.
The start of summer on the
Seven Mile Beach and the countdown to the 4th Annual 7 Mile Restaurant Week are like the light at
the end of the tunnel for this writer.
Months of “cooking” for the sake
of trying (and for the mother-in-law,
who politely hands over cookbooks
every week) are over! Restaurants
are here, opening their doors for
breakfast, lunch and dinner, and
what better excuse to go out three
times a day, other than … it’s Restaurant Week!
From the bottom of the island
(Donna’s Place on 107th Street) to
the very top (La Vecchia Fontana
on 8th Street), more than 35 restaurants have returned for this annual
summer kickoff set for June 3-7,
and are featuring breakfast and
lunch specials, plus deliciously
prepared three-course dinners for
the small price of $32.13. Vacationers and locals alike are encouraged to try as many places as you
can while these great prices last,
and we guarantee you are sure to
return many times throughout the
summer.
The culinary expertise it takes
to create the perfect pancake is
baffling to this writer, hence my frequent stops to the famous Uncle
Bill’s Pancake House, which offers
solace for cooking disasters in the
art of hot coffee, crispy bacon and,
of course, fluffy pancakes. Both the
Avalon and Stone Harbor locations
are participating to feature daily
Restaurant Week breakfast and
lunch specials. Also be sure to stop
by the new Kudos American Grille,
offering a healthy side to your threea-day with gluten-free and lighter
options of your favorite dishes.
Lunch options are abundant during this week, featuring
the area’s best in cheesesteaks,
hoagies, pizza, sandwiches and

don’t panic. It’s still here, just a new
location at 83rd and Third Avenue.
All participating restaurants feature
delicious lunch options, and some
even deliver to the beach!
And finally, the great debate
begins for dinner. This year’s Restaurant Week boasts eclectic dining with
flavors from around the world, and
honestly it’s a tough choice. Where to
begin, the casual outdoor elegance
of The Back Yard? The frothy margaritas and Blue Crab Nachos of Tortilla
Flats? Or do we return to one of our
year-round favorites, where everybody knows your name? Luckily, we
have five nights of delicious options
to work with.
One must is Café Loren, now
celebrating its 36th summer in business. The restaurant’s partner and
executive chef, Stephen Serano,
pleases diners with popular favorites including Braised Short Ribs
and fresh local fish options. An
added bonus this year is that Café
Loren opens its doors to a brandnew look after extensive renovations throughout the winter. Chef
Serano is putting together his menu
for the summer, his 14th with Café
Loren, and will feature popular favorites and new options in two
menus to choose from.
“We love Restaurant Week
because it gives diners a chance
to sample our menu, and have the
opportunity to return throughout
the summer,” he says. “It boosts
numbers during the slow start of
the season, and is also is a great
chance for the locals to enjoy the
area restaurants before it gets too
busy.”
Italian is also a “must” stop,
and apparently my famous frozen
raviolis are not an option. For a
taste of old-world Italian with homemade pasta, be sure to stop by
Fuze Italian Ristorante, celebrating
its second season in Avalon. Also,
new to town this year, is La Vecchia
Fontana. Owner and executive chef
Bujar Daku opens his third area restaurant (La Fontana Coast in Sea
Isle City and La Fontana Del Mare
in Strathmere), in the old Avalon
Hotel on 8th Street. Winner of Best
of the Shore and Best of Philly for
delicious food, Daku’s new restaurant will feature simple yet delicious
options that reflect the authentic
Italian experience.
And for the remaining few
nights, we will play it by ear, but rest
assured my oven is on strike. With
so many dining options available
on the Seven Mile Beach, we are
good to go with edible, even delicious food for at least three glorious
months. Wish us luck (or maybe
more so, the dedicated husband
who tries everything and hides the
grimaces) for when these great
options close for the season. But
let’s not talk about that just yet.

enough! From old-world Italian to
new-aged American fusion, from
pizza to pancakes and from cheesesteaks to chimichangas, the
