I nformation 2008 7 Mile Island Info & Happenings H appenings 2008 www.HollyRennie.com TH E B E G I N N I N G Avalon Circa 1914 2 In the romance of the Middle Ages “Avalon” was the name of an island in the ocean, a castle of loadstone upon it “not far from this side of Paradise”. It was known as the the “Island of the Blest”. “Avalon” was believed to be the home of the magical Oberton, King of the Fairies. The name Avalon was given to “7 Mile Beach” and purchased in 1722 from it’s British owner for $380.00. Originally the island was known as Leaming’s Island after the first owner- and later had four names – Avalon (inlet to 25th St), Peermont (25th – 37th St), Holiday Beach (north of a Stone Harbor) - these three becoming the Avalon we know today. Stone Harbor which incorporated in 1914. The bare island originally was used as a cattle ranch. The early developers, The Avalon Beach Improvement Co., who dubbed Avalon “The Jewel of the Jersey Coast”, spent $500,000 in public and private improvements including water, sewer, electric, road and sidewalks and dredging harbors. In 1889 The West Jersey Railroad extended facilities to Avalon – eventually with three stations and two hotels. The first Avalon excursion was June 28, 1888 – Avalon became the ideal business man’s resort. Stone Harbor Circa 1905 In the late 19th Century we saw a small area known as Stone Harbor, named for an English sea captain who found refuge here, begin to change. Thanks to the vision of The Risley brothers who purchased the area in 1905, they created the Stone Harbor we know today. In 1911 The Risley’s South Jersey Realty Company coordinated the dredging of three new basins, created surfaced streets and established water and sewer systems. The most influential change for the development of this community was the dedication of a second line of the Reading line entering Stone Harbor. The development of the boulevard called Ocean Parkway and bridge to Cape May Court House created the first land access to Stone Harbor. The development of homes was encouraged by offering potential buyers the opportunity to purchase lots for “free” for the purchase of bonds costing $80 a piece varying with the location of the lot and the number of lots a buyer wished to purchase. The reopening of the Stone Harbor Yacht Club in 1929 marked the culmination of the Risley brother’s vision. H O L LY R E N N I E .CO M HOLLY C. RENNIE I discovered Seven Mile Island over 20 years ago – a single Mom looking for the perfect vacation spot for her son to grow up. An escape from the hustle bustle of NYC and day to day life. A place where families vacation worry free and truly appreciate and enjoy the shore for all of the “natural entertainment” the beach and bay offer. I was introduced to Avalon by other parents and friends who had already discovered the “Jewel of the Jersey Coast” and soon after we made Avalon our summer vacation home and the memories began! Four years later, we moved to our vacation home and made the is609-967-4200 land of our summer dreams our year round home. Raising my son Direct: 609-967-0289 in this wonderful community was a dream come true. Close-knit Email: Holly@HollyRennie.com and family-oriented does not begin to describe the feeling one gets Website: www.HollyRennie.com when you think of this island. A safe harbor – a relaxing atmosphere – a “no fuss no muss” attitude – Seven Mile Island is the shore at it’s absolute very best from the widest of pristine beaches to the outstanding sunsets over the wetlands. Choosing a career in Real Estate was an easy one for me. I could not wait to share my personal experiences with folks looking for guidance as they search for that perfect summer vacation home for a week- or the family ready to become part of this island as an owner of their own piece of paradise. My husband and I are both part of making people’s dreams come true here at the shore – he as a builder of their “castles in the sand”(Mike Rennie Construction) and me as a realtor who counsels them in their seashore home decisions. And we love what we do! I am proud to be a part of the Number One Sales Team on the island – a team of consummate professionals who work tirelessly to attain the goals of their clients. The term team is critical because only with the combined efforts of each of our 13 full time agents, 17 full time personal assistants, 7 support staff and Broker/Owners could we consistently achieve the goals our clients set for us. Our team has satisfied the dreams of 10’s of 1000’s of seashore goers in search of their perfect vacation rental or the ideal summer vacation home. No task is too small or too large as we deliver the same level of exceptional customer service to all who come through our door. Where there is knowledge there is strength – where there is strength and experience there is success – where there is success there are happy clients! “The proof is in the pudding” my Gran always said. Just ask any of our satisfied and happy clients! 3 4 S EV E N M I L E I S L A N D AVA LO N STON E HARBOR ISL AN D I N FO RMATION AVALON CALENDAR OF EVENTS JUNE June 7 June 14 June 22 June 23 June 23 June 27 June 28 June 28 June 29 June 29 Avalon Garden Club Flower Show – 12:00 Historical Society - Jean Loesch Memorial Tri Avalon Race Performing Arts Council 21st Annual Art Show Chamber Craft Show– 29th & Avalon Ave – 11:00 am – 5:00 pm Start of Summer Daily Activities Veterans Plaza Concert – 7:00 pm Chamber Craft Show 30th St. between Ocean & Dune 11:00 am – 5:00 pm TK Charities Triathlon pre-registration TK Charities Youth Triathlon & TK Charities Triathlon Alex’s Lemonade Stand 8:00 am- 4:00 pm JULY July 1 July 1 July 2 July 4 July 4 July 4 July 4 July 4 July 5 July 6 July 11 July 12 July 12 July 12 July 18 July 21-24 July 26 July 26 July 26 Avalon 4th Family Festival Big Beach Movie Veterans Plaza Concert-7 Mile Singers-7:00 pm Avalon 4th Family Mummers Parade & Concert-Dune Dr. 6:00 pm Warren Buckingham Memorial Swimming Races-Windrift – 10:00 am Field Races -10th St. 2:00 pm Boat Parade Beach Concert– SNAKE BROTHERS-30th St. Beach 12:00 – 3:00 pm Veterans Plaza Concert– McQ 7:00 pm Avalon 4th Family Festival & Fire Works– 6:00 pm-9:30 pm RAIN DATE Avalon Family Festival & Fire Works Veterans Plaza Concert– Cape Harmonies-7:00 pm Holston Tennis Trust Fund Raiser Bocce Tournament-Italian Festival-39th St 10:00 am-4:00 pm Contact-Cape Atlantic Avalon 5 Mile Run- 8:00 am Veterans Plaza Concert– 7 mile Singers-7:00 pm Brass Band Camp - 39th Tennis Building Parkinson Walk Avalon Performing Arts-Beach Concert-12:00 – 3:00 pm 30th Street Avalon Performing Arts Council Reggae Party Night – 8:00 pm 5 CONT.
