WHAT IS LEADERSHIP?
Leadership is a word that comes
up often in conversations with
business professionals, in particular
during our one-on-one meetings
at the Chamber with business
and community leaders. It can
be hard to define as it means
different things to different people
and different things in different
situations.
As we stated, leadership means different things to different
people. Legendary business journalist Marshall Loeb spent
decades interviewing the greatest leaders in American
Business. Along the way, he defined these steps to effective
leadership:
Know the difference between leading and managing.
Leaders are people who do the right things, managers are
people who do things right. There is a profound difference.
Develop your sense of purpose. What employees want most
The words “leader” and “leadership” are often used
from their organization leaders is direction and meaning, trust
incorrectly to describe people who are managing. These

individuals may be highly skilled, good at their jobs, and
valuable to their organizations –

but that just makes them good

thing. They set direction, build
or organizations that are being
an inspiring vision, and create
managed by such an individual or

they’re not.
people you lead to do the same.
Leaders help others do the right thing. They set direction,
build an inspiring vision, and create something new.
Leadership is about mapping out where you need to go
to be successful. It also includes developing leadership
skills within your team, creating an environment where you
can continue that success in the long term. That’s a true
measure of great leadership.
Therefore, an effective leader is a person who does the
following:
• Creates an inspiring vision of the future. A vision
provides direction, sets priorities and provides a marker
that is measurable.
• Motivates and inspires people to engage with that
vision. It’s the leader’s ability to motivate and inspire
people that help them deliver that vision.
• Manages the delivery of that vision. There is a time to
discuss, a time to sell, a time to participate, and a time
to delegate. Knowing the approach to use and when to
use it, is key to effective leadership.
• Coaches and builds a team, so that it is more effective
at achieving the vision. A leader will ensure that team
members have the necessary skills and abilities to do
their jobs and achieve the vision.
Limit yourself to just a few key objectives. As an example, in
2015 our Chamber wants to increase our membership base,
improve our brand awareness throughout the region and
develop additional opportunities to collaborate.
Borrow the best ideas and methods from others. Did you
know General Electric was among the first to study and apply
Wal-Mart’s retailing systems?
Remember that great leaders are made, not born – usually
self-made.
Be yourself. Figure out what you’re good at and stick to it!
To become an effective leader does not just happen. It takes
time to learn by practicing key leadership skills, until they
become routine. We can all become an effective leader at
any stage of our career. Becoming more aware of our work
environment and our team’s potential is essential. We hope
this overview on leadership can be beneficial to you and your
organization.
Thank you for being a valued member of the
West Chester Liberty Chamber Alliance.
Together we grow your business!

Former Cincinnati Red, Corky Miller,
Joins Dayton Dragons Coaching Staff
The Dayton Dragons recently welcomed
former Cincinnati Red, Corky Miller, to
their coaching staff. One of the more
popular Reds players in recent years, Corky
will join another former Reds star Tom
Browning on the staff, along with manager
Jose Nieves and hitting coach Louis Bolivar.
Corky spent parts of 11 years in the Major Leagues, mostly
with the Reds. He also played for the Braves, White Sox,
Twins and Red Sox. He made his big league debut with the
Reds in 2001 and played in his final Major League game in
2013 at age 37, becoming the oldest Reds player to start a
game at catcher since 1951.
Corky adds even more MLB experience to the Dragons staff
which includes Browning, who pitched the only perfect game
in Reds history in 1988 and won a World Series in 1990,
and Nieves, who won a World Series title with the Anaheim
Angels in 2002.

Combination Brings EMA to New York City
Eric Mower + Associates, one of the largest U.S. independent
marketing agencies, combined with Middleton & Gendron,
a public relations and brand communications agency in New
York City.
This combination continues EMA’s growth as a national
agency and extends the public affairs reach of its Albany
office. EMA—which also has offices in Cincinnati, Atlanta
and Charlotte, N.C., plus three other Upstate New York
markets of Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse in addition to
Albany—now serves clients from eight different cities.
M&G is a nationally recognized leader in PR and marketing
in the luxury hospitality, travel and lifestyle categories.
The agency’s practice has expanded to include real estate,
business to business, retail and fitness.
Together, EMA and M&G create a digitally-integrated
independent marketing and public relations agency with
more than 250 professionals and estimated 2014 capitalized
billings approaching $250 million. M&G will continue
operations as M&G/Eric Mower + Associates until the end
of 2015 and then adopt the EMA name, as has happened in
other combinations in other markets.
The two parties were introduced by SGP Worldwide.
Planes Commercial Services
Launches New Website
Planes Commercial Services, a leader in commercial
relocation including asset management, short- and longterm storage solutions, and total Move Management,
announced the launch of its new website, www.PlanesCommercialServices.com. This website introduces
the company’s new logo and a fortified approach to
communicating its core services.
Planes Commercial Services is a division of Planes
Companies, an asset-based company with more than 90
years of experience in the transportation industry. In early
2014, Planes Companies was named a 2014 “Top Workplace
in Cincinnati” award winner in the medium business
category by the Cincinnati Enquirer.
“We wanted to better define our commercial moving and
storage abilities in a way that would appeal to our customer
base,” said John Planes, CEO. “It was time our brand
reflected the growth and achievements of this division in
recent years.”
The transformation of Planes Commercial Services comes
just months after Planes Companies updated its logistics
division, Planes Specialized Logistics.

February Luncheon Recap
It was a typical brisk, cool afternoon in West Chester/Liberty Township for the Chamber’s February
monthly luncheon. This month’s speaker, Drew Dinkelacker of MarketingAccelerator.com (Elder High
School and Xavier University Alum) shared his marketing wisdom with an old adage many business
folks know: Pareto Theory commonly referred to as the “80/20 Rule”.
In the business world, we’ve all used the 80/20 rule to summarize different data in business that
never seems to follow any rules of equality. “Remember back in our childhood days when we all
met up with the one kid on the playground who would complain that ‘it’s not fair’?” Drew referred
to the fact that output never seems to match input in business. For example, if we all reviewed our
respective sales teams, we would never find that each sales person produces the same amount of
sales. Rather, we would more likely uncover that 80% of the sales production comes from about
20% of our sales team. He then shared with us the studies cited in Perry Marshall’s book 80/20
Sales and Marketing which considered the world economy as it relates to Gross Domestic Product.
Statistically cited in Marshall’s book, 80% of the world’s economic production was produced by
the GDP’s of 20% of the countries in the world.
SPEAKER – Drew Dinkelacker, MarketingAccelerator.com
Powered by this statistical knowledge, what if we could use the Pareto Theory to predict the future.
This led to another fun example which Drew referred to as “Queen of Shoes”. He had every lady
in attendance (76 in total) volunteer by standing up. Drew then calculated using the 80/20 rule
that with 76 women standing 3 of them will have over 100 pairs of shoes in their closets today.
As he asked each lady to sit down in various thresholds, when he asked for those who had 100
pairs or more in their closet today, exactly 3 were left standing (with the sole winner being Michelle
Vondrell with over 400 pairs of shoes in her “shoe room”). Hence, the 80/20 rule has statistical
significance to help us both explain and predict data.
How can we take the “Power of 80/20” to marketing, business and life? We must start by studying
our best customers (the top 20% in terms of revenue generators/referrals). “We must spend
time creating a profile of them (demographics, motivations, etc.) including understanding them
personally through social media, like Facebook.” Drew continued by emphasizing the importance
of “attacking those top 20% clients” by creating a “magnet/attraction” for them. With time being
limited in today’s entrepreneurial world, he suggested having to learn to ignore the other 80%
of our customer base who do not qualify for the top 20% in order to maximize marketing/sales
revenue results.
80/20 for life is a bit more personal. It starts with time management in today’s “e driven life”.
“We must prioritize our emails, software and other apps to uncover the top 20% of what we enjoy
most”. He encouraged us to identify the top 20% of space in our homes that we spend 80% of our
awake life in and make sure those rooms are functional and provide us with positive reinforcement.
In the wake of New Year’s resolutions for healthy living/exercising, he reminded us that 80% of
weight gain/loss comes from what we put in our mouths and nutrition rather than the hours we
spend at the gym or exercising. Finally, Drew suggested that we take time in reflecting on the top
20% of our favorite, most important and cherished things in our lives. Focus on such things and
you’ll find life-long fulfillment in both your professional and personal lives.
EMCEE – Lynda O’Connor, President of the Lakota
Board of Education
I can honestly say I thoroughly enjoyed Drew’s message having a new found appreciation for the
80/20 Rule and the many applications it has on my life beyond using it as an old adage!

Update on Lakota
Local Schools
I wanted to take some time to thank
the members of the Lakota Local
School District Board of Education, for
everything they do for our schools, and
also share some information about
how school boards work in Ohio that is
not always understood.
  
  
There are five individuals on the school board: Lynda O’Connor (president), Todd
Parnell (vice president), and members Ben Dibble, Ray Murray and Julie Shaffer. Each
year in January the board selects its own officers. Ben and Julie have also served
terms as president.
Board members are not employees of the school district, and they don’t have offices
here. I know this is a common misunderstanding, because we routinely have people
come to our Central Office and ask to speak to a school board member.

Also, unlike many other elected office holders, they are not paid, other than a
nominal meeting stipend. Yet they all do a large amount of work. There are usually two
school board meetings every month. Every board member also serves on one or more
board committees, which have their own meetings. And board members often do work
individually, with myself or some of our senior administrators in the school district.
They spend time at home reading over material and preparing for meetings. And they
all attend many concerts, plays, athletic events, award ceremonies, etc., throughout
the school district.
They do all this to help ensure that the children in our community receive an
outstanding education. They also work, as we all do, to be careful stewards of the
resources provided by the community.
Our school board plays a significant role in the success of our school district. I join
our community in thanking them for their public service.

Connecting the Dots...
The success of a business is determined by many
factors. For new business owners, it is exceptionally
important to find those sources of support that will
help your business thrive. When purchasing the local
AlphaGraphics franchise, Cinda Morse embarked
on a new and exciting venture that allowed her to
utilize her strong business prowess and fantastic
interpersonal skills. As president and owner, Cinda
was determined to add value to her community by
providing impeccable customer service and product through AlphaGraphics’ full service
print shop. To help her achieve her aspirations, Cinda felt it was important to align
herself with an organization that could support her and the business. She found that
encouragement through the West Chester Liberty Chamber Alliance.

■
“The West Chester Liberty Chamber Alliance has been fantastic for our business,” Cinda
says. “They have supported us in many ways from helping us with our grand opening to
sending us customers and helping to get our name out to the community, just to name
a few.”
■
Cinda has also taken advantage of the vast amount of networking opportunities The
Chamber has to offer such as Women 4 Women, Business After Hours and Java with Joe.
“Joe (Hinson, President and CEO of the West Chester Liberty Chamber Alliance) has
been key,” Cinda says. “We had such a good time and it was such a valuable experience
that I scheduled for a second Java with Joe.”
■
Cinda continues, “There have been many people at The Chamber who were instrumental
in helping me to find my way in the business.” Through Women 4 Women, Cinda was
introduced to Kathy Rambo, Vice President of Special Events, who made her feel good
about her new business endeavor and inspired confidence in her abilities as an owner.
Since acquiring AlphaGraphics in January of 2013, the business has seen tremendous
growth. They have tripled in staff and project consistent development moving forward.
Cinda’s husband left his career to join his wife so they could work together and build
their business. Community is very important to the couple and they hope to make a
positive impact on their community while giving back to help support others like they
have been supported.

If It’s
tuesday then
It must be...
Come joIn the fun
tuesday’s from
6:30-8:30pm
If you are responsible for hiring employees for your company, no
matter how large or small, you know the headaches that accompany
this task. The potential employee looks great on paper, charms
with personality, but their past remains a mystery. Enter Mike
Lupidi of SmartProScreen.com. His company does comprehensive
background checks on employees and he can do the detective work
on people that can make or break your staff.
Lupidi offers sound advice on the process of screening potential
employees: “Only do a background check on people that you are
intending to hire and make their offer contingent upon a successful
background screening. It’s all proper and legal,” he said.
He is able
to offer
screenings
for drugs,
background, credit, education verification, motor vehicle records,
criminal history and sex offender registries.
Given Lupidi’s background as a recruiter in manufacturing, he has
found that this business goes hand-in-hand with his past work. He
has also found ownership of his SmartProScreen.com franchise has
helped him to discover another common need: background checks
for tenant placement in the property management world.
“A niche has evolved here. There is a big industry involved with
tenant rentals,” he said. “Managers want to know as much as they
can about potential renters and my capabilities and capacities are
unlimited.”
He has those that are requesting the background check provide him
with the name and e-mail of the person to be screened, he contacts
them and can get a background check secured in under 10 minutes.
It is also common practice to have the tenant being screened pay
the fee associated with the screen.
Fees associated with the background check average around $30
and special checks can be added ala carte as needed.
In terms of future employee screenings Lupidi makes this
admonishment: “There is a paradigm shift that needs to happen
where there is $30 in the budget to safeguard your business.”
Mike can be reached at 513.779.1433 where he can get you
started on a background check and provide quick results.

Leadership 21 Re-Cap
Leadership 21 had the pleasure of engaging a number of organizations who provided an overview of
the services available in our community to help others. Neighborhood Housing Services of Hamilton
graciously hosted the leadership group and gave us some insight into their mission as a nonprofit
community development organization to revitalize and build communities. The group then left for first
hand tours of Shared Harvest Foodbank and the Reach Out Lakota facilities learning about the many
volunteers who work to assist those in need of food and other necessities. A subsequent field tour of the
Boys and Girls Club of West Chester/Liberty provided an insight into the options to help the children in
our community. The afternoon was filled with presentations from the Butler County United Way, Sojourner
Recovery Services, Big Brothers Big Sisters, S.E.L.F. (Supports to Encourage Low Income Families), and
the Butler County Board of Developmental Disabilities. It was an enlightening day for all and it’s truly
amazing how many caring volunteers and community organizations strive to help those in need.
