Airline Faced with ADA Dilemma
A group of three locals fly frequently, and have traveled worldwide on numerous airlines. They always get early boarding, and usually get a lot of attention.
Jim Hogan, his wife, Pam, and his seeing-eye dog, Atticus, have almost always had a
positive experience when they traveled, despite challenges with Jim’s blindness – and the
fact they have a canine in tow. Until recently, that is.
“We boarded a flight from Albuquerque to L.A. and, in the process of boarding, there were
probably, I’d say, at least five wheelchairs waiting to board. We have priority boarding as
well,” said Pam Hogan. “There was the mother of a disabled young man … and she was
making a heck of a big fuss that her son had to sit in front. They sat in the very first seat and
put wheelchair down below.”
Jim, Pam and Atticus boarded shortly after the young man in the first row, who appeared to
have physical and developmental issues, she said. The man reached out to pet Atticus as
they walked by and the mother asked if Atticus was friendly.
“As we’re going by, the flight attendant said to my husband, ‘You have to sit in the
bulkhead,’” said Pam.
Pam told the flight attendant that they fly frequently and have a smooth system, where
Atticus fits neatly near Jim’s feet with his nose tucked underneath. The Hogans feel the
bulkhead seat is too large an area.
“If there’s turbulence, the dog’s going to go flying,” she said.
The threesome got settled in their seats and the mother of the young man with disabilities
addressed the flight attendant.

Homicide Releases ID of
Murder Victim on Golden
Valley Road
Dog on Airline
By Perry Smith
“She jumped up and said, ‘My son is so
allergic to animals, he can’t be near a dog,’”
said Pam.
The flight attendant responded by asking
Pam and Jim to move further back on the
airplane. Though it was challenging to pack
up and move to another seat, the Hogans
dutifully did so.
The next thing that occurred, said Pam, was
a conversation with the same attendant, who
approached the Hogans a second time.
“This isn’t far enough back, you have to
move further,” said the attendant, who Pam
described as about 6-feet 2-inches tall and 200
pounds.
Jim said, “Now look, I want to see a supervisor, this is getting ridiculous.”
The attendant responded to Jim’s request by
giving the Hogans an ultimatum.
He said, “If I get a supervisor, you’re off
this flight. We’re getting you another one. At
30,000 feet we can’t just pull over if this guy
has an allergy attack. If I call a supervisor,
you’re off this plane,” according to Pam.
The Hogans looked at their options.
“Jim knew that if we were off the plane,
they’d be flying and we’d be sitting in Albuquerque. So, we moved,” said Pam.
Though Jim was irritated, the Hogans figured
moving was their best option. Pam said other
passengers started to mumble, because they
were irritated also. She could sense that the
attendant perceived
that Jim, who is a
Vietnam veteran
who has post-traumatic stress disorder, had reached the
limit to his tolerance
of inconveniences.
Pam believes that
passengers with a
problem, such as
an allergy, should
choose to move to a
different seat themselves.
“He (the flight attendant) went overboard, he was being
a bully,” she said.
“Jim did call later
and file a complaint.
It did kick up to a
much higher level
of customer service
representatives and
they’re going to use this as sensitivity training
for disabilities.”
The airline spent a few days investigating the
situation and apparently spent time talking to
the flight attendant.
“He didn’t want to have an allergy incident,
so his best course was to move us to another
location,” said Pam. “After we landed, the
flight attendant went out of his way to be
nice to us. He said, ‘I was just doing my
job.’”
Homicide detectives released the identity of a 28-year-old
Hispanic man found dead Sunday in the trunk of a Honda,
officials said.
The airline rewarded the Hogans with two
vouchers to fly free, though Jim and Pam
did not ask for the compensation. They had
a similar experience on another airline in
Europe. The couple and Atticus were denied
boarding because the airline claimed it was
not licensed to fly a guide dog for longer
than six hours. The airline staff was incorrect
about the rule.
Flores was found in the trunk of his own car, a blue Honda
Accord, on Sunday morning.
“I said all I want is an apology,” said Jim.
“They gave me two roundtrip tickets to
London.”
The couple is impressed with the way the
airlines corrected the situations, especially the
recent domestic situation.
“I‘ve learned a lot from this incident,” said
Jim. “I’m more prepared. I should’ve requested the pilot. He’s correct to remove you
from the plane if you want the supervisor …
the resolution officer is in the airport handling ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act)
complaints.”
Jim said the pilot has the final say as to who
stays onboard.
“If it comes again I’ll say I can’t be moved
and ask for the captain,” he said.
Jim worked as a
building inspector until retinitis
pigmentosa, a hereditary disease,
made him unable
to see. On the
recent flight from
Albuquerque, Jim
and Pam were
returning from a
meeting where
he received the
Veterans Administration “Male
Volunteer of the
Year Award,”
because he works
tirelessly as an
advocate for
fellow veterans.
He was given the
B.P.O.E. Elks
“Citizen of the
Year” award two
years ago.
That was Atticus’ last working flight. Now
the Hogans can share some of their colorful
travel experiences with their new guide dog,
Hoosier.
The victim was named Jose David Flores, 28, of Leggett,
according to Homicide officials.
Officials with the Coroner’s Office said Wednesday a
medical examination was scheduled for the afternoon, but
Flores’ cause of death would not be immediately released
following the examination due to a “security hold” placed
on the case by Sheriff ’s Department officials.
No arrests have been made, and detectives have not released
any information about any possible suspects.
The suspected murder is part of the seventh suspicious death
investigation in the Santa Clarita Valley area since January.
The body was found by Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff ’s Station
deputies, after a deputy conducting a routine patrol check
noticed a blue Honda Accord parked illegally on Golden
Valley Road, near Golden Valley High School.
The deputy noticed the car around 9:30 a.m., and the
deputy was inspecting the car before it was slated to be
towed when the body was discovered in the trunk.
The immediate cause of death “was not obvious,” according
to Jauch, who said he could not release more information at
this time.
Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged
to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff ’s Department’s
Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. To remain anonymous,
call “Crime Stoppers” by dialing (800) 222-TIPS (8477), or
text the letters TIPLA plus your tip to CRIMES (274637), or

New York Police Arrest
Suspect in Canyon Country
Shooting, Murder
New York State Police have arrested the shooting suspect
who allegedly killed a man and wounded his girlfriend
in a Canyon Country apartment complex last month,
officials said Tuesday.
According to a statement from the police department’s
Buffalo office, Michael Joe McGlothan, 51, was arrested
without incident Monday at about 4 p.m. near a highway
toll booth on the New York State Thruway in western
New York.
McGlothan was arraigned in the Town of Dunkirk Court
and taken to the Chautaugua County Jail pending an
extradition hearing, the statement said.
Los Angeles County Sheriff ’s homicide investigators
identified McGlothan as the suspect in the May 6
shooting death of Ledarion Allen Jr., 21, and the
wounding of Shatari Shene Cooks, 30, who was treated
for a gunshot wound at a local hospital.
The incident occurred in the 25700 block of Sierra
Highway.

OPINION & LETTERS
Lean to the Left
I Like Ike
Before you keel over from shock that I’m applauding a former Republican President of the United States, wait until you see how some of the policies of Dwight
D. Eisenhower are good examples of a progressive mind. Sure, he’s a controversial character – like most leaders – but there are facts about him that are, at times,
overlooked.
Eisenhower, the general, the man and the President are covered in depth in a
current issue of American History Magazine. Writers draw attention to his many
acts of desegregation and his stands that weren’t always popular with his party
on the Right. Today’s Republicans would be wise to pay attention, especially
where the upcoming election is concerned.
President Eisenhower once said: “The Republican Party must be known as a
progressive organization or it is sunk. … Far from appeasing or reason with the
dyed-in-the-wool reactionary fringe, we should … repudiate it. … Their thinking
is completely uncoordinated with the times in which we live.”
I couldn’t have said it better. Trying to drag society backwards is foolish. Think
about it – should women be sitting in their gardens painting? Should our necklines be up to our chins and our hemlines to the floor? Queen Victoria would
certainly prefer it.
By Sylvia Turner
Writer David A. Nichols, in an article entitled
“Unless we progress, we regress,” points out that
when President Eisenhower took office in 1953,
African-Americans in Washington, D.C. couldn’t
rent a hotel room, buy a meal, attend a movie
or easily find a drink of water or use a restroom
outside of black neighborhoods. Wow. President
Eisenhower to the rescue!
And here’s something you may find ironic. Eisenhower the President pressured
Hollywood moguls to de-segregate theaters. Now, how are you right-wingers going to criticize the Democrats who hobnob with Hollywood elites?!
Ike was the one who signed the Civil Rights Act, the first civil rights legislation
for 82 years, at the time. He also employed the first African-American executive
assistant in the White House. As for the judicial branch, Eisenhower appointed a
new justice to the Supreme Court who was liberal in regard to race issues, while
the high court was soon to make a ruling on the Brown school desegregation
case, which struck down the “separate-but-equal” ruling from 1896.
Let’s be forward thinking, people on the Right. Your views on women’s rights,
race and everything else are so … 1950s.
Black Flight, Taking the Wind out of the Liberal Sails
By Robert Patrick Lewis
If you aren’t familiar with the term “white flight,” it
is a term used to describe the mass exodus of white
middle- and upper-class families from urban areas
and large cities like Detroit, Chicago and New York
to the more conservative and less congested suburbs.
There are many studies that show the reasons for this
exodus and the results that came from it, but they are
easiest to see when political maps begin to crowd our
media around election time.
This was evident during the last two elections
with McCain and Romney battling now President
Obama, showing that while the conservative voters
carried the vast majority of land and painted large
swaths of the political maps red, the urban centers
with tiny amounts of landmass but extreme population density were almost exclusively blue.
For this reason, Democrat, Leftist and Socialist ideals have found their power basis in these areas with
the large cities like Detroit, Los Angeles, Chicago
and the like being the home turf for unions, minimum wage hike disputes and politics permanently
dominated by the Left.
But that’s all about to change.
My friends have asked me just how long this can last
with Democrats, unions and entitlements running
cities into the ground, but their constituents still
blindly voting left-wing at every chance. With every
election here in Los Angeles, I watch as the Left successfully launches false marketing campaigns against
any proposition meant to restore fiscal sense to the
city, telling its unionized sheep that anything good
for business is bad for them.
The thing about marketing and re-branding is that
you can have the best marketing campaign in the
world, but if the product is shoddy, the people will
soon find out. The people bought the propaganda
product the Left has been selling, and once it was
fully unwrapped they realized it was all fluff and
garbage.
Being a Texas transplant to Southern California, I’ve
always laughed a bit when I hear Californians laugh
and talk about the Southern states being full of racists and dimwits, having failed conservative policies
and not making as much money for the same job as
their SoCal counterparts.
Having lived in Texas for most of my life, I know
this to be absolute nonsense, but found that arguing
this point to Californians (especially Angelinos) was
pretty pointless. But, now the proof is showing itself
through the numbers, and it’s taking the sails right
out of almost every major liberal argument.
While the 1950s and 1960s were the age of “white
flight” from the areas of urban density to the suburbs, it looks like we are now in the age of “black
flight,” a time when many minorities are realizing
the folly of the Left’s ways and moving to the south.
This comes from two different studies on upward
mobility, one from The Equality of Opportunity
Project at Harvard, and the other from Joel Kotkin’s
Center for Opportunity Urbanism.
Put together, the Harvard study shows that a poor
child whose family leaves their bad neighborhood for
a good one will have better future economic prospects, and the Kotkin study showed that of the top
15 cities for African Americans today, 13 are in the
former Confederacy.
You read that correctly. These two studies show that
not only will African Americans be well served to
move out of the liberal-dominated urban centers, but
the best place for them to move for a better future is
to the conservative-controlled south.
In the military, we had the term “self-licking ice
cream cone,” and I feel this is as good an image as
one can get for the reasons why this result was inevitable. I’ve long said that Los Angeles would have
no one left but politicians and welfare cases if they
stayed on the same trajectory, and still the mindless
voters ushered in more mindless Democrats.
I laugh as I see them using millions of gallons of
water to take 28 fish to the ocean and then complaining about a drought, approving billions for a bullet
train to nowhere and then wondering why private
industries don’t want anything to do with it, passing
so many taxes and regulations on businesses that
the two internationally known cornerstones of Los
Angeles, Hollywood and pornography, packed their
(money) bags and left town.
businesses packing trying to make
up for their illadvised choices,
conservative
ted-state cities like
Austin, Houston,
Dallas, Birmingham and Atlanta are booming, to the point they are
asking Californians and other blue state residents
seeking work to stop crowding their states.
So, what does the Left do now? Their attacks on
conservative politicians in the South and attempts to
label the South as racist can’t hold much water if 13
of the top 15 cities for African Americans are located
there.
They can’t really attack conservative politicians in
the South as stupid and dim-witted if their cities
are topping the lists of “top cities for tech startups”
(Austin), and “best cities for entrepreneurs” (Birmingham). Interestingly enough, if you look up the
“best cities to find a job,” you’ll find that the end
of that list is lousy with California cities, with San
Bernardino coming in dead last.
I’m sure the Left will do what they always do: build
up their house of cards and hope that a gust of wind
doesn’t come along to blow it all down. The unions
will ride the misinformation train until the last of
their dues-paying members leaves to find better quality of life for their family, and politicians will say
anything they can to save their own necks.
And while the Left continues to use false marketing campaigns and sleight of hand, the Southern
Conservatives will continue to do the right thing and
come out victorious.

DOUG’S RANT !!!!!!
I Rant, You Decide
Puzzlement:
Two candidates who were not successful in their bids
to be elected in the most recent city council elections
announced their intentions of seeking office again,
but in higher positions in 2016. One wonders why
they think they can achieve success at a higher level
when they didn’t get enough votes on a lower level. It
kind of reminds me of all the Republican presidential
candidates. Do they all really think they have a chance,
or is it some sort of ego gratification? What do you
think?
Who Knew?
Have you seen City Councilman Dante Acosta in
that commercial for an insulin product? It came on
and I did a double take and backed up the DVR. Sure
enough, it was him! He actually does a good job. Who
knew? It shouldn’t be a surprise, though, as his dad
was a character actor years ago and was on one of my
favorite shows in the sixties – “The High Chaparral,”
which was filmed, in part, around my hometown of
Tucson.
Makes Me Bat Crap Crazy:
This minimum wage thing almost makes me sick to my
stomach. When I hear the small brain types yak about
inflated wages not being detrimental to jobs, I cringe,
laugh and almost cry. Ask Magic Mountain, fast food
companies, almost any type of business, how they will
handle having to artificially give their employees raises
that don’t resemble any sort of business sense? Ask this
ranter what he will have to do when it hits his business.
It ain’t pretty, my friends.
And what’s up with unions who are behind rallying
the troops to demonstrate for higher wages, asking
for exempt status for unionized businesses from
implementing the wage increase? Hmm. … What am I
missing here?
Hypocrisy at its Finest:
Recent Headlines: ‘More Than 300 People Shot, 37
Fatally, During May in Chicago’ and ‘ Homicide Spike
In Baltimore’: Why is Obama, his buddy Sharpton
and the rest of the police-hating liberals so silent about
these tragic happenings? I really don’t get it; if they
are so concerned with the well being of blacks across
this land , shouldn’t they be waging a frantic campaign
to address this? This reeks of such hypocrisy, it’s
sickening. It just proves that when these police incidents
occur and they get in the middle of them, the only thing
they care about is themselves and making people think
they care about injustice. It reminds me of what Jesus
said when he walked on this earth: “Hypocrites! For you
are like whitewashed tombs, which on the outside appear
beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men’s bones and all
uncleanness. So you, too, outwardly appear righteous to men,
but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.”

he inherited some tough stuff. But, what has happened
since 2009?
• Made a complete mess of foreign policy, losing trust/
respect and becoming a laughing stock to the rest of
the world
• Record number of people on government assistance
• Lowest labor participation rate in history
• Many quarters of negative or flat economic growth
• Told the American people they can keep their doctor
and their health insurance plan
• Made claims our health insurance premiums would
decrease $2,500 per month
• Word out today, health insurance premiums are
going to sky rocket because of Obamacare
• Scandal after scandal concerning himself, nobody in
his administration or political party having the stones
to stand up and say, “Hey, something doesn’t look right
here; we should at least look into this”
• Inner city murders have increased greatly without
him even commenting
• Our military is depleted to the point that many
experts think we won’t stand a chance in any sort of
large scale, long-term conflict
• We hear now ISIS has and is using 2,300 of OUR

The Peter Principle, the theory that all members in an
organization rise to their own level of incompetence, is in full
display here. There is just no way around it. Listen,
even with all the newspaper experience I have, if you

That’s just what happened to this guy, no matter what

All That’s Good in the SCV
Bill Meant to Boost Middle College High Schools
By Martha Michael
AB 542 is heading to the California State Senate after passing the State Assembly this week. The bill, which was introduced by Assemblyman Scott
Wilk (R-Santa Clarita), aims to help California community colleges receive
funding for physical education classes offered to early college and middle
college school students.
Early college and middle college schools are operated on community college
campuses and allow teens to complete many of their college courses concurrent with earning their high school diplomas. A local example is Academy
of the Canyons (AOC), located on the campus of College of the Canyons in
Valencia. On Saturday, AOC will graduate 95 students, and 18 of them will
earn an associate of arts degree at the same time as their high school diplomas.
“Academy of the Canyons students are required to take physical education in
order to graduate and it is unfair that course fees are waived for every class,
but P.E.,” Wilk said. “These innovative high schools allow students, many of
which are first generation college students, to complete high school on a community college campus while also working on earning college credits. AB 542
is a hand up, not a hand out.”
AOC Principal Dr. Pete Getz believes the bill will have little impact on the
school, which has ranked as “One of America’s Best High Schools” by U.S.
News & World Report.
“It is not going to impact AOC students or the program at all, at any point
in the near future,” said Dr. Getz, who has served as AOC principal for 18
months. “The AOC students do not pay for P.E. at the college. Our students are required to pay some fees each semester, about $50. Plus, they are
required to pay for textbooks in grades 10-12. They do not pay for books in
ninth grade, because we require certain courses.”
Dr. Getz has another idea to offset costs for students.
“I strongly believe the next move should be addressing the cost of textbooks,”
he said. “Currently, textbooks can run a student over $500 per semester. This
cost can, in some cases, keep students from enrolling in our program, thus
reducing the equal access to the program. Also, this situation is contrary to
the primary targeting student.”
The majority of students at AOC are the first in their families to attend college, so Dr. Getz pointed out that requiring students to cover some of the fees
prevents a number of them from enrolling.
“My personal feeling is all books should be covered, granting better access to
AOC for more students and families,” he said.
Academy of the Canyons is a middle college high school in the Wiliam S.
Hart Union High School District, serving students in 9th-12th grades in the
Santa Clarita Valley. Students who attend AOC have the opportunity to earn
between 24 and 44 transferable college units, while achieving their high school
diplomas.
The school’s graduation will be held this Saturday, June 6, 2015 at 9 a.m. in
the Honor Grove on the campus of College of the Canyons, 26455 Rockwell
Canyon Road in Valencia. For more information about AOC, call (661) 3623056 or visit http://www.hartdistrict.org/aoc/.

Non-Profit of the Week

Blue Star Ranch
Serving Veterans Through the Healing Power of Equine Therapy
Blue Star Ranch is an all-volunteer
organization with a mission of serving the
nation’s post-9/11 veterans suffering from
post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) using
the healing power of equine therapy.
With more than 2.6 million men and
women serving in the U.S. military since
9/11, an estimated 13 to 36 percent of these
military service members are living with the
debilitating effects of PTSD, according to
the New England Journal of Medicine and
the Rand Institute study, “Invisible Wounds
of War.”
“The horse is a proven motivator to keep
veterans engaged in therapy,” said Nancy
Pitchford-Zhe, who founded Blue Star
Ranch in 2014 with her husband, Vietnam
veteran John Zhe. “We know that equine
therapy will provide our post-9/11 veterans
living with post-traumatic stress disorder
and their families with a therapy that
works.”
Under the direction of a mental health
care professional and experienced equine
specialist, veterans are paired with
therapy horses and led through a series of
exercises to improve communication and
collaboration. The exercises are designed
to help veterans overcome known barriers
to engaging and staying in treatment, and
can also help families in post-deployment
transition build resilience, according to
organization officials.
All services are provided to veterans free
of charge, making the need for donations
crucial to Blue Star Ranch’s continued
operation. To raise funds for their cause,
organization officials are busy planning the
second-annual Blue Star Ranch Poker Ride,
set for Saturday, October 10, 2015.
The escorted trail ride will begin at 10
a.m. at Castaic Lake, with poker and live
entertainment by John Bergstrom and the
Western State of Mind band continuing
until 5 p.m. that evening. Ride registration,
set for $40 per person, includes a Jersey
Mike’s boxed lunch and one poker hand,
with additional hands available at $20
per hand. Cash prizes up to $300 will be
awarded for first through third place.
To raise community awareness about
their mission and promote the upcoming
event, Blue Star Ranch officials made an
appearance on KHTS AM-1220’s “Nonprofit Spotlight Show” with Janice Murray
earlier this week.

Hero of the Week - Nancy Pitchford-Zhe
By Melissa Lampert
The president and co-founder of Blue Star Ranch in Santa Clarita, Nancy
Pitchford-Zhe said she’s had a special place in her heart for horses since the
day she was born. Always an animal lover, Pitchford-Zhe became especially
fond of horses when she was just one year old and received the gift of a
rocking horse she named Tony. Her love for horses continued to grow until
she eventually decided to take on the responsibility of a real horse.
“When I bought a palomino mare named Dustin D’Orr, or Dusty, at age
39, I found out horses made great therapists,” Pitchford-Zhe said. “Life had
become overwhelmingly difficult, and Dusty came into my life at a critical
time.”
Having overcome her personal obstacles with Dusty’s help, Pitchford-Zhe
said she started thinking about those with special needs who might also be
helped by horses like Dusty.
for disabled children and adults, serving as the organization’s executive
director. She also served as an advisor for the North American Riding for
the Handicap Association during the production of an equine therapy video
featuring former President Ronald Reagan, as well as the volunteer training
director for the California Network of Equestrian Therapy.
The wife of a Vietnam veteran, Pitchford-Zhe and her husband, John,
founded Blue Star Ranch together last year to provide free equine therapy to
post-9/11 veterans living with post-traumatic stress disorder.
Pitchford-Zhe currently serves as the organization’s executive director,
continuing to provide healing to the nation’s veterans with the help of
therapy horses Mariah and Captain Jack Sparrow, miniature therapy
donkey Sammy and the rest of Blue Star Ranch’s dedicated team.
“Mainly, I started to think about children with disabilities who would never
have access to horses, and thought if Dusty can work her magic with me,
why not these kids?” she said.
Soon afterwards, Pitchford-Zhe launched herself into what has become a
27-year career of serving children with special needs, at-risk youth, cancer
patients, senior citizens and others through horse therapy programs she
designed herself.
In 1985, she was certified by Happy Horsemanship for the Handicapped,
Inc., and just one year later founded Heads Up Therapy with Horses

Restaurant Review
Juice It Up Raw Juice Bar
Last month I discovered Juice It Up Raw Juice Bar here in Santa Clarita –
specifically, the one on Newhall Ranch Road in Valencia. I went there for a
mid-day “pick-me-up” recently. I found the restaurant to be clean and bright
with friendly and quick service.
The menu at Juice It Up offered many types of drinks. They have choices
like raw apple, carrot and orange juices, fruit and veggie fusions, smoothies,
fruit bowls and “shots” of wheatgrass and ginger juice. During my three
visits I decided to try, and enjoyed, the following offerings from the menu:
“Awakener,” “Raw Fusion” and “Detoxifier.”
The Awakener consists of orange and carrot juices and ginger and is flavorful and simple. It gave me a boost of energy and did wake me up. (I’ll have
to tell my pal Jonathan Kraut about the Awakener.)
By Ben Oakley
On my second visit I tried the Raw Fusion. It was a blend of apple, banana,
pineapple and spinach. The drink was very tasty, bright green in color, refreshing and satisfying. My most recent visit, which was my third, included
drinking the Detoxifier. That drink was a mixture of cucumber, ginger,
lemon, red grape and spinach juices. The flavor was great.
The drinks were ample in size, the ingredients were fresh and the prices
were very reasonable.
I look forward to returning to the Juice It Up Raw Juice Bar. It is located at
28164 Newhall Ranch Road.

Obamacare and You 2014-2015
by Jim Lentini
At the end of 2014 there was an article in The Signal that is a recap of
Obamacare, including comments by local providers and doctors about what
healthcare under Covered California means to us locally.
When Obama created this law in March 2008, he said the insurance companies are making too much money, building big buildings, and now it’s
time for all Americans to have “affordable” health insurance. Most of us
who represent the healthcare industry didn’t agree with his evaluation and
realized he did not understand the industry he was “changing.” Or, he did
and was following his agenda as instructed by those who wanted a different order and control of our economy and services by government. This is
proven by the events, costs and mistakes by those who are implementing the
“Affordable Care Act” or ACA.
First, health insurance companies are mandated by federal and state law
to make a profit to remain solvent to pay future claims. Healthcare rates
are controlled by the state insurance commissioner, and if an insurance
company needs to raise rates on a block of business, the agency must first
prove there is a loss ratio of at least 80 percent on premiums collected. That
means that an insurance company has to operate on 20 percent gross profit,
pay all of its overhead, pay commissions, and make a profit of 3-5 percent
to remain viable and able to meet future claims. This has not changed in 100
years!
To the best of my knowledge and 50 years of experience in financial planning and insurance, there is no private company on earth that can function
and work for such a minimal gross profit, other than the insurance industry,
which is overseen by the state and federal government. So, the question
is, why would the government want to take over an industry that affects
all Americans and is one-sixth of our present economy? Obama’s camp
blames insurance companies for the mess, but why has a buddy of Michelle
Obama’s, a Canadian, received the contract for the website that doesn’t work
and paid over 600 million of our taxpayer dollars, when an American group
in Silicon Valley said it could be done for 1 million and would work? And, it
would be secure!
Since 1993, here in California we have
had AB 1672 that guarantees anyone
who is turned down for health insurance can obtain coverage through the
MRMIP (Major Risk Medical Insurance Plan) program, underwritten
by most of the insurance companies
licensed to do business in California.
Today, we see government and leadership not addressing the healthcare issues properly and now admitting to
making mistakes and lying to the American people! Americans who pay
for their insurance and pay taxes are assured of increases in premiums and
reduction of benefits and tax increases like never before!
And now Obama is making changes to the law, 14 to date within the last
four months, which may be illegal. The cost of “The Affordable Care Act”
is going to be far greater for all Americans, whether coverage is provided by
an employer’s group or an individual plan. Both employers and individuals
will pay more for their coverage and benefits, and services are going to be
reduced! So, what is really the meaning of the title, “Affordable Care Act”?
As a certified agent attempting to guide our clients who are required to make
changes on their healthcare coverage, I have helped two or three individuals who had medical issues that the subsidy and guarantee through Covered
California can benefit. But, that is only two out of over 1,000 clients, just
the tip of the iceberg, and benefits only a few individuals not covered by an
employer’s group. Remember, it wasn’t the tip of the iceberg, but the iceberg
under the surface that sank the Titanic.
And now, the latest news is we have major medical providers not accepting
any insurance plan written under the ACA rules for healthcare.
Pray that we get corrected leadership that benefits the American way of life,
and those of us who pay for healthcare.

Animal Abuse, Neglect, Abandonment
Crimes Punishable by Jail Time and Fines
By Robin Sandoval
Recently, and regrettably to note, there has been a spate of animal abuse
crimes making their way in the news. In one, a sea lion (later named Bubba)
was found off the coast in Ventura County with a harpoon jutting out of its
side. Animal activists and concerned citizens had been searching for Bubba
for days after he was first noticed near Channel Islands Harbor. Once he was
located, people were able to sedate him and transport him to Sea World San
Diego to undergo emergency medical care. According to reports, the wound,
while significant, should be survivable.
In another report, a family from Arizona who were moving away discarded
their couch (and their pet dog) on the curb for anyone to claim. A neighbor
quickly called Maricopa County Animal Control, and an official went to the
site and picked up the dog (though he chose to leave the couch behind). The
woman who called in the report took pictures of the dog before animal control arrived, and placed those shots quickly on social media outlets, sparking
many calls by activists to charge the owner of the dog with animal abandonment.
While no charges have been reported, it should be noted that the “couch
dog,” or “Brownie,” as she came to be called, was quickly adopted by a family as soon as she was put up after her mandatory stay at the shelter was over.
There are about 50 different laws in the State of California that protect
animals, but there is one primary law that deals with most cases of abuse or
neglect. California Penal Code 597 PC covers these cases involving animals,
like those in the stories above.
PC 597 is a pretty broad law, and can be defined as any case in which an
animal is the subject of either abuse or neglect. The law also protects farm
animals and wild animals, as well as domesticated pets and strays.
Unlike cases of abuse/neglect in humans, animals are not able to communicate with investigators, and so law enforcement often relies on the community to report cases as they come across them. Many animal rights organizations and law enforcement entities have web pages where these kinds of
reports can easily be made online.
California has some of the strictest laws regarding animal cruelty in the
country, and penalties can range pretty widely. Most of California’s animal
laws are misdemeanors, but some are “wobblers” that can be prosecuted as
felonies, depending on the circumstances of the case. As a matter of fact, PC
597 itself is a “wobbler.” If convicted of a misdemeanor offense, defendants
face fines of up to $20,000 and up to one year in county jail.
Felony-level offenders face penalties that include 16 months to 3 years in
California state prison and a fine of up to $20,000. Additionally, those convicted of crimes against animals may be forced to pay costs associated with
housing the animals (if they are removed from the home), as well as participate in counseling.

Teens Urged to

White Ribbons
Saugus Man has Website
for Happy Hour Fans
By Martha Michael
Just like the saying “necessity is the mother of invention,” it was Kyle Swick’s search for inexpensive food
and drinks while he was in between jobs that planted
the idea for his latest web business. Seven months
ago, he launched Scvhappyhour.com, where community members can turn to find local specials.
“I was in between jobs
and still wanted to get
a bite and a pint, but
on a budget. I tried
searching for happy
hour places to go, but
the information on
line was very vague,”
said Swick. “Hence,
Scvhappyhour.com.”
His customers aren’t
the men and women who take the seats in the eateries and pubs, but the restaurants and bars themselves.
Owners and managers of the establishments register
with SCV Happy Hour and Swick includes them on
his live site, offering addresses, maps, phone numbers, hours of happy hour and days of the week,
detailed lists of happy hour drinks, appetizers and
prices. There are photos of the locations, logos, and
links to their own websites and Facebook, when applicable.
“The research was fun, of course, but I love the great
comments I hear about how cool the site is and the
restaurants/bars getting new customers from my
by Martha Michael
resource,” said Swick, who has a background in
restaurant management, business development and
sales.
Each year community leaders come together
during graduation season with a campaign to
cement the commitment of teens to resist reckless or impaired driving. Sponsored by the City
of Santa Clarita, Frontier Toyota, Henry Mayo
Newhall Memorial Hospital, the Santa Clarita
Sheriff ’s Department and Safe Rides, “White
Ribbon Week” and the “Drive Safe Program”
seek to educate local students about the dangerous risks involved. Since 2010, five local students
have lost their lives in vehicular collisions.
All the bars and restaurants listed on the site are
local, like his newest client, The Shot Exchange in
Saugus. SCV Happy Hour
covers Canyon Country,
Saugus, Newhall, Valencia and Stevenson Ranch,
according to the website.
“When you go to the site
you can navigate through
locations – listed by community – or you go to
‘community’ to search by
the area,” said Swick. “I
don’t have a review section yet, but may do so later on.”
Promoting responsible driving habits is another
agenda of the White Ribbon Week program.
The Santa Clarita Sheriff ’s Department makes
presentations to senior classes and distributes
white ribbons for students to wear on their
gowns during graduation to remind them to celebrate commencement in a safe and sober way.
Swick requests updates from general managers or
others he works with at each location and he said he
gets them updated within 24 hours. Mostly, he’s hoping the website stays as hot as the happy hour food
he posts and the deals he publicizes for them.
Residents can show support by wearing white
ribbons, available locally, including City Hall,
Henry Mayo Hospital, Frontier Toyota and
more.
“Many locations have great discounted appetizers
during that happy hour time,” he said.
For more information on White Ribbon Week
and the Drive Safe Program, contact Maria
Orem, marketing specialist at the hospital at
(661) 200-1305 or oremmt@henrymayo.com.

4th Annual California
Honey Harvest Festival
Returning to Fillmore
Santa Clarita Teen Admits to Posting
Instagram Threats Nearly a Year Later
By Melissa Lampert
SCV residents can get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at
the world of honey harvesting during the 4th annual California
Honey Harvest Festival set for Saturday, June 13 in Fillmore.
Sponsored by Bennett’s Honey Farm, the festival is designed
to raise awareness and educate local communities about
beekeeping and the important role bees play agriculturally—
and all for a good cause.
With festival proceeds benefitting the national nonprofit
organization Autism Speaks, attendees can enjoy arts and
crafts vendors and samples from the 3rd annual Kansas
City BBQ Society’s Sanctioned BBQ Contest at downtown
Fillmore’s Central Park before embarking on a train ride from
the festival location to Bennett’s Honey Farm.
During the ride, residents will travel through an actual bee
yard and watch beekeepers at work as they “smoke” bees and
extract honey and honeycomb. Once at the farm, participants
will be taken on an exclusive tour of the honey processing
facility only available to the public once a year—during the
California Honey Harvest Festival.
The annual event is open to the public, set to begin at 9 a.m.
and end at 5 p.m. at Fillmore’s Central Park.
A Santa Clarita Valley teen admitted Wednesday
to posting shooting threats on the social media
site Instagram nearly a year ago, District
Attorney officials said.
“I can confirm that he admitted to one count of
making criminal threats and he was placed on
probation,” said Los Angeles County District
Attorney spokesman Greg Risling in an email to
KHTS AM-1220. “He still is 15 (years old).”
The teen, whose identity is not being released
because he is a minor, was reportedly a Golden
Valley High freshman when he posted the threats.
The
threats,
which
posted
from
the Instagram account “Yaboyplank,” showed
pictures of guns and said: “TO THE PEOPLE
OF THE SCV AREA. THERE WILL BE A
HUGE (expletive) SHOOTING SOON…”
The post went on to say the threat was aimed at
high school students.
The student was arrested around 9 a.m. Aug. 17
in connection with the alleged threats, according
to a Sheriff ’s Station official.
City to Host Reception for
‘Portraits of the Fallen Memorial’
SCV residents are invited to attend a free public
reception Saturday to commemorate the opening last
month of the “Portraits of the Fallen Memorial” art
exhibit at the Westfield Valencia Town Center.
A project of the Pasadena Arts Council’s 501(c)3
EMERGE Fiscal Sponsorship Program, the traveling
exhibit memorializes U.S. military service members
from California who sacrificed their lives while serving
in Iraq and Afghanistan, and features 165 5-by-5-inch
portraits of fallen heroes in a variety of mediums.
Seven of the pieces commemorate military service
members from Santa Clarita, including Richard P.

Valencia Town Center until July 11, when they will
be transported to a different California venue for
temporary display. The Pasadena Arts Council plans
to display the exhibit at a variety of venues across the
state, with the ultimate goal of someday building a
permanent memorial site depicting all of the nation’s
fallen heroes.
Contributing artists, families of the fallen soldiers
and local veterans are expected to be present
at the upcoming reception, along with Mayor
Marsha McLean, Mayor Pro Tem Bob Kellar and
Councilmembers Dante Acosta, Laurene Weste and
TimBen Boydston.
The reception is set for Saturday, June 6 from 4-8
p.m. at the Westfield Valencia Town Center, adjacent
to Urban Home in space 160 at 24201 Valencia
Boulevard.

The incident was one of several in recent months
that drew widespread activity to the Santa
Clarita Valley regarding teens and their alleged
social media activity.
A representative of the Detectives Bureau for
the Sheriff ’s Station said the photos appeared
to be stock Internet footage and “there is not
evidence the suspect has any access to these
guns,” according to Lt. Brenda Cambra of the
Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff ’s Station.
“Detectives immediately responded to the
station to begin working this investigation,”
Cambra said.
The Instagram account used a photo of a
Valencia High School in Texas to threaten a
shooting in the Santa Clarita Valley in another
post.
The Hart District released a statement to parents
the day before the arrest stating it “takes threats
of this nature very seriously. We are working with
the Los Angeles County Sheriff ’s Department.”

Online Registration
for Summer Reading
Program to Begin June 8
Free online registration for the Santa Clarita Public Library’s
2015 “Read to the Rhythm” summer reading program is set
to begin Monday, June 8 at SCVSummerReading.com.
The program, which runs from June 8 to July 25,
encourages readers of all ages to celebrate literature and
music with a variety of summer programming at the
Canyon Country, Valencia and Old Town Newhall library
branches.
Brand new to the program this year is the Five Book
Summer Challenge, which encourages children and adults
to read five items this summer. Children grades first through
sixth who complete the challenge will receive a free book
from Barnes & Noble Valencia, and all who complete
the challenge will be entered to win prizes, such as flutes,
recorders, acoustic guitars and Amazon gift cards.
For full “Read to the Rhythm” programming, information on
special events, challenge details and registration information, go to
SCVSummerReading.com.
The portraits will remain on display at the Westfield
