Despite Fire
Triumph Foundation Hosts Casino Night Fundraiser
Last week, a fire at a Canyon Country storage
facility destroyed, among other things, supplies
belonging to a nonprofit group benefiting those
with spinal injuries. In serendipitous fashion, it
just so happens that the nonprofit – Triumph
Foundation – had already slated an upcoming
fundraiser, which may help recoup some of the
loss.

Trueblood III, at a meeting last week with the Joint Powers Authority, which
gathered to discuss oversight of public television station SCVTV.

loss from the fire included supplies for the
fundraiser.
“We lost all of our resources, banners, signs, six E-Z UP canopies, 200
T-shirts, a few hundred water bottles, equipment for our sports and adaptive recreational programs, some durable medical supplies and some silent
auction items,” said Andrew Skinner, founder of Triumph Foundation.

Trueblood, an advisor to SCVTV, gave a presentation to the Joint Powers
Authority, which is the oversight entity for Santa Clarita's public television
station. It is made up of chief executive officers from the City of Santa Clarita,
the city manager of Santa Clarita, the College of the Canyons chancellor, and
superintendents of each district, including William S. Hart, Saugus Union,
Sulphur Springs, Newhall and Castaic Union.
Trueblood explained the challenging nature of trying to sell media advertising
in a competitive market. In the past, the station found political advertising
lucrative, but the station made a collective decision to no longer accept any
political advertisements. Trueblood and SCVTV Station Manager Leon
Worden expressed confidence that the station would pull through and find
other sources of revenue.
During the public comments portion of the meeting, community member Steve
Petzold stated his concerns that the organizations making up the JPA do not
contribute financially to the station in any way. There is a common practice in
some nonprofit organizations for board members to contribute financially.
The City of Santa Clarita is currently the only contributor of funds to SCVTV,
and the dollar amount going to SCVTV in the past has been $50,000 a year.
Trueblood indicated that these costs are only able to cover a portion of operating expenses.

“We are seeking silent auction items for our
fundraiser, because a lot of them were destroyed in the fire. Most importantly,
we need monetary donations, because most of the things that were lost are specialized items that need to be created and purchased.”
Estimated damages to Triumph’s supplies total $10,000, and the public is encouraged to assist the charity in replacing what was lost. On the “up” side, any
efforts made by Triumph to garner media attention for the annual fundraiser
were unnecessary, due to reports by major media outlets, including KTLA
Channel 5 News in Los Angeles.
“The Let‘em Roll Casino Night Fundraiser is a bonus because people want to
know how they can help and this is an easy way that they can get involved, and
at the same time, celebrate the fact that life goes on, even after tragedy,” said
Skinner. “It does preoccupy us from focusing solely on our rebuilding efforts.
We are going to try and power through the fundraiser and then really direct our
attention on getting a new locker, rebuilding the baskets, and restocking our
inventory. However, the fundraiser is a blessing; we are starting over, so (Let’em
Roll) is more important this year than ever before.”
Andrew Skinner suffered a Spinal Cord Injury in 2004 in a snowboarding accident outside his family’s cabin in Lake Arrowhead. Andrew broke several
vertebrae in his neck, paralyzing all four of his limbs and rendering him a quadriplegic. After years of extensive physical therapy, Andrew regained some function and felt destined for a mission: to help others who suffered injuries like him.
In 2008, he and his wife Kirsten founded Triumph Foundation with a simple
desire: to bring hope, resources, and mentorship to people who are dealing with
paralysis.
“When someone becomes paralyzed, their injury affects everyone around them
-- family, friends, loved ones, and the entire community,” said Kirsten Skinner,
who was with Andrew when he got injured and has stayed with him every step
of the way. “For the last seven years, Triumph Foundation has partnered with
people to assist them with triumphing over the new challenges they face and
restoring life. We not only want to see people get their body moving again, we
want to see people get their lives moving again too.”
Triumph Foundation’s programs serving the Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) community include giving people who are newly paralyzed care baskets which are filled
with information and resources; providing grants to help obtain necessary equipment, supplies, and services; assisting with home modifications for wheelchair
accessibility; leading SCI support groups; and sponsoring wheelchair sports
teams and adaptive recreational programs to support disabled athletes.
“Most significantly, (in the fire) we lost
all of the Care Packages that we bring to people that are newly paralyzed. This
is the cornerstone of our outreach,” said Andrew Skinner. “We had just built
60 Care Baskets and Care Backpacks and had plans to visit several hospitals
in the upcoming months. The Care Baskets are primarily filled with resources.
Some of them we print/produce, and others are from organizations and businesses that serve our disabled community that we feel people should know about
because they will be helpful with their recovery from a spinal cord injury. In
addition to that, we include small gift items like a Triumph T-shirt, water bottle,
fun games and puzzle books, hand sanitizers, Chapstick, travel size shampoo
and soap, toys and other things that might be helpful, occupy time, and cheer
someone up when they are in the hospital. And we include treats and goodies,
like candy, granola bars, cookies, and snacks. We also do a backpack program
that is very similar, except rather than a basket, these items come in a backpack
and the resources are kept in an accordion-style organizer.
“Each basket/backpack cost us around $30-$50 to produce, plus hours of volunteer labor. However, the baskets’ value exceeds any real dollar amount; each one
of the 60 that were destroyed represented a person. They were going to an individual that was at their lowest point of life, struggling with the reality that they
were paralyzed. Those people will not receive this toolkit to help them rebuild
their life and give them some hope for the future. That’s why my heart breaks.”
Andrew Skinner and his wife, Kirsten, heard about the fire the evening it occurred.
“We got a message from a friend on Thursday night that our facility was on
fire, and judging from the pictures, we were fairly certain ours was one of the
victims,” said Skinner. “We did not have access that evening because they had
the highway shutdown, so we drove over there first thing in the morning at
around 5 a.m. to check it out. Sure enough, our locker was one of the 18 that
was destroyed.”
The public is invited to attend the “Let ‘em Roll Casino Night” at the Hyatt
Regency Hotel in Valencia on Saturday, July 18, 2015. The event will feature a
Texas hold’em poker tournament, craps, blackjack and roulette. A prime rib dinner will be served and guests can enjoy music, dancing and a silent auction.

Springs School District Superintendent Dr. Catherine Kawaguchi, was formed to explore new revenue generating ideas.
SCVTV is the Santa Clarita Valley’s only public news station, and covers local school districts, as well as College of the Canyons, providing
internships and experience to local youth.
SCV Chamber of Commerce President Terri Crain said about the station, “They are always there for us, any time we need coverage... SCVTV is
here to benefit the community.”
Others were there to show support for the station, including activists involved with “Measure S,” who
worked last year to bring a billboard issue to voters. They said they were pleased with the lack of bias
shown in the news coverage of the measure by SCVTV.
“We look forward to the next six months of working with them,” said Worden, SCVTV’s president.

old, very playful and friendly with other dogs,
and fully trained. She’s a stunning boxer with

Fourth of July Attractions Come to Santa Clarita
This Saturday, Independence Day takes center stage in Santa Clarita, with a
series of patriotic events taking place in the valley.
The Santa Clarita Runners’ Club starts nice and early on the 4th of July with
the Independence Day 5K and 10K. Runners of all fitness levels are invited to
join in an exciting race along the 4th of July Parade route. The 10K will begin
at 7 a.m., followed by a Kid K at 7:45 a.m. and the 5K race/walk at 8 a.m. The
races all start at Newhall Park, located at 24933 Newhall Avenue. Age group
awards will be given to first, second and third place winners in both the 5K and
10K and all Kid K participants will receive a finishing medal. Participants must
register at scrunners.org.
After the race, residents can go to Main Street in Old Town Newhall to watch
the annual Santa Clarita 4th of July Parade beginning at 9 a.m. This year’s
parade is themed “Santa Clarita: Living the American Dream.” It will include
horses, floats, music, classic cars, military presentations and more. For more

The Independence Day festivities will go out with a bang at the City of Santa
Clarita Fourth of July Fireworks Show at Westfield Valencia Town Center,
beginning at 9:15 p.m. KHTS AM 1220’s live soundtrack will complement the
ambience of the event as fireworks light up the night sky. Due to the popularity
of the event, guests are encouraged to arrive early.

Thursdays@Newhall Schedule Continues
The fifth installment of the City of Santa
Clarita’s Thursdays@Newhall series,

ArtSLAM is a part of the event this
Thursday, July 2 from 6-10 p.m. The
evening will feature live spray paint
artwork from local artist Pablo Cevallos,
plus ceramic art demos from the Ceramic
Artist Studio, Inc. (CASI). At 7:30 p.m.
participants can take part in JAM Sessions,
hosted by Ford Theatre Foundation, with
a rhythmic evening of drum circles led by
Christopher Ramirez.
On the following Thursday, July 9,
“Revved Up” is the theme for the event,
featuring imports, tuner and modified
import vehicles, including body kits and
sound systems. Local residents interested in
submitting an automobile for consideration
in Revved Up can apply online. The event
takes place from 7-10 p.m.
The holidays arrive “California style”
on Main Street with a Christmas in July
block party for SENSES on Thursday, July
16 from 7-10 p.m. Participants will hear
current hits and can sing along to favorite
holiday tunes with The Replicas, and enjoy
an evening of holiday themed activities,
food trucks, adult beverages and Santa
Claus.

Greetings,
As you drive through our city these days, you
have probably noticed that the grass on the center
medians is no longer being watered. By order of the
Governor, cities are mandated to reduce their water
use and, specifically, can no longer water grass
medians.
Reducing water use is something our city has been
working on for the last several years. I encourage you to visit our website: santaclaria.com/waterwise to learn more about how we are reducing our water use
citywide. We have started to remove water-thirsty grass and replace it with low
water use plants and will continue this effort until all of the grass is removed.
Our use of smart controllers in our parks is saving 330 million gallons of water
annually.
An audit of city parks, trails and open space areas revealed some grass areas
that are more decorative than useful, which we have shut off water to and will
replace with mulch. At city facilities, we have turned off decorative fountains,
replaced old water fixtures with low-water use fixtures and use targeted bubblers
to irrigate trees in the medians in order to conserve water.
A city hotline to report broken sprinklers in city landscaping will help us to be
even more vigilant with our watering, so please let us know if you see water
runoff by calling the City’s water hotline at 661-286-4011 and after hours at 661290-2200.
We will continue to work with the SCV Family of Water Suppliers to reduce
our water use and comply with state mandates. For information on your specific
water reduction requirements, contact your water retailer: Valencia Water

This month gets off to a great start with the 4th of July celebration
with some terrific hometown events. The annual 4th of July parade
is held at 9 a.m. in the Newhall and Valencia areas of our city and
draws thousands every year. The 2015 parade theme is “Santa Clarita:
Living the American Dream,” and the parade grand marshall is Leon
Worden, 2015 SCV Man of the Year. For parade route information,

If you enjoy a good morning run, you should definitely consider
checking out the Santa Clarita Runners Club 5K/10K run-walk. The
10K run starts at 7 a.m. and the 5K begins at 8 a.m., both at Newhall
Park. The race course follows the 4th of July parade route. There’s
also a “fun run” event for the kids. More information and sign-ups are

What 4th of July would be complete without a fireworks show? The
City of Santa Clarita hosts an exciting, free fireworks show at the
Westfield Valencia Town Center, beginning at 9:15 p.m. The colorful
display is a great way to cap off a fun day of festivities. You can also
enjoy a simultaneous soundtrack broadcast live on KHTS-AM 1220.

Every weekend through
September 6, 2015, residents can choose from
several Santa Clarita locations to catch a bus to
Santa Monica Beach.
Santa Clarita Transit
offers two routes each Saturday and Sunday, with one route
serving the east side of the City and the other route serving
the west and south sides. Fares are $3 for adults and kids and
$1.50 for seniors and persons with disabilities.

Canyon Road and Solamint Drive, Soledad Canyon Road

Santa Clarita Artists’ Association. David Wolfram of Torrance will demonstrate oil
painting to attendees at the Aug. 17 meeting, which is free and open to the public. The
demonstration begins at 6:30 pm at Barnes & Noble, 23630 Valencia Blvd. in Valencia.
“I am greatly inspired by the changing qualities of light during the day, and how
different conditions affect color. My favorite times of day are sunup and the magic
moment of intense color just before sunset – I try to capture these times
in many of my paintings,” said Wolfram.
Employed as a toy designer and design manager at Mattel Inc. for almost 22 years,
Wolfram has been expressing himself as a fine artist since he left corporate life. He said
he is inspired by the California impressionists.
“I find that I am drawn to situations that contrast bold areas of light and shadow, as
well as colors and reflections in water. I divide my time equally between working in
oils and pastels, and like to paint with them en plein air. I feel that painting outdoors
is an essential activity for me, because it attunes my eye to the ever changing light and
atmospheric conditions that influence color. I can then take this acquired knowledge
into the studio to give that work more veracity.”
Buses arrive in Santa Monica between 10 and 10:15 a.m.
and depart for Santa Clarita at 4:30 p.m. Travelers can bring
beach chairs, coolers and surfboards onto the commuter express buses.
Wolfram teaches classes in pastels, oils, and on the art of picture-making, as well as
conducting plein air workshops. He is a founding member and vice president of the
Pastel Society of Southern California, and a studio artist at Destination: ART, an art coop in Old Torrance. Born in Buffalo, New York, Wolfram moved to California, where he
graduated with distinction from Art Center College of Design, with a bachelor’s degree
in illustration.

OPINION
Politics are Fickle
I’ve previously written about the unfolding Greek
financial debacle (see “Drunk on Debt, a Greek
Tragedy”), but as the tragic politics there seem to be
gaining momentum, rather than heading off potential disaster, it deserves an update.
Perhaps what worries me most about the current
events in Greece is that we’ve seen very similar
circumstances even in our own country, and neither we nor the Greeks seemed to have learned the
lesson. Reminiscent of the beginnings of our own
Great Depression and the events in Cyprus just a
few years ago, the Greek government called for all
Greek banks to close today, and stay closed for six
days, in reaction to long lines of people attempting
to withdraw (what they thought was) their money
from the banks.
In case you don’t understand the basics of fractional
reserve banking and why they would do this, (and
part of why so many countries and their people
are in unmanageable debt these days), I’ll give an
elementary explanation here.
In order to increase investment and the money supply, banks are allowed to use what’s called fractional
reserve banking. It’s called that because banks are
only required to maintain a fraction of every dollar
deposited by its customers, and the other (vast majority of) fractions are allowed to be lent out in loans
and investments.
Nobody seems to bat an eye when times are great,
the markets are soaring and everyone makes money

(well, the banks make money). But, when times are
bad, as almost all of the markets are somehow connected, we begin to see the effects of greed and poor
decisions.
The tragic events usually begin something like this:
something happens to spook the markets (stock
market collapse, real estate market collapse, currency
devaluation, etc.), and people rush, out of fear, to
their local banks to get their money.
This “run on the bank” takes more cash than the
banks (completely legally, by the regulations of
fractional reserve banking) keep in their vaults. The
banks, now low on cash, need to call in their debts
and loans. Because of the initial issue that caused
the run on the banks, most people or businesses can’t
afford to pay off those loans.
People get homes foreclosed on, can’t afford to pay
taxes, strain the larger economy by losing their jobs
(as people get into financial difficulty they shop less
which means businesses take in less money, which
means they pay less in taxes, so on and so forth).
And most of this, I believe, usually boils down to a
simple point: somewhere along the line, as was very
apparent in Greece (and currently here in the U.S.),
a politician comes along who promises money for
nothing, more money for less work, tighter regulations, making more small businesses close, and elevating the public sector and government jobs (paid
for in taxes from those same small businesses closing) to the most highly regarded (and paid) of jobs.

away from all
but those naturally inclined to keep their noses to the
grindstone.
The politicians do what politicians do and pander
to the majority, but seem to forget that while voters are easy to sway, the bill collectors holding your
debts usually are not. And funny enough, even the
people who voted this “free money” administration
into power in Greece are showing in recent polls that
they’re already prepared to take another vote and
throw them out.
This does not seem like it will end well for Greece,
no matter what happens, and my only hope is that
its repercussions don’t leak too far out into the global
markets.
But it does go to teach an important lesson that I
wish people would learn on the microeconomic
level: nothing in life is free, no matter what the politicians on the campaign trail promise.

Calling all Christians railing against gay marriage!
This week’s column is for you!
I wish you could hear that when you tell gay individuals they’re “sinners just like you” or you’re “loving the sinner, hating the sin” it’s condescending.
And don’t even try the Archie Bunker defense: “I
have friends who are gay.” Do you publicly critique
your obese “friends” too?
If only you could trade places.
Let’s turn the tables and separate YOU from your
sexuality. How would you like to be told the woman
or man who is the love of your life can’t live with
you, you can’t touch him/her, settle down together
and start a family? In fact, if you even WANT to,
you’re a “sinner.” How would that feel? How would
it feel to have your life laid bare, where everyone
gets to shame you?
Let’s call your pastor over and show him your porn
collection, your drinking habits, your bank accounts,
your sugar intake, your language, the shows you
watch. Many of those sound like “lifestyle sins,”
which is what you call homosexuality, unlike your
sins, which are occasional. (Really?)
This is YOUR issue. NOT
theirs.
They make you uncomfortable.
Period. Show some intellectual honesty and admit
it. Just like blacks did some decades ago. They’re an
easy target.
Can you see how ridiculous that sounds?
There are plenty more accusations I can make (keep
in mind, when you use your power to disparage or
hold back humans with different needs, you invite
criticism): do you flirt with married friends? Cheat a
little bit, lie sometimes?
It’s the whole idea behind Jesus saying only the
blameless can cast the first stone.
Have you noticed that whatever the judgmental
white majority chooses to shame, it’s always a “sinning subset” that they conveniently have nothing
to do with? Surrrrre, you can point at gay people
because, conveniently, you’re not gay!!
This column is not about accusing you of your
wrongdoing. It’s about pointing out your judgmentalism.
Which ones did Jesus embrace? The self-righteous?
Or the ones the self-righteous cast judgment on?
This is seriously a no-brainer.
The gay community is guilty of one thing: love.
That’s funny—Jesus’ greatest commandment.
Who’s on the side of heaven now?
History was Made
Last Friday, June 26 was a defining day
in American history. In a 5-4 vote, the
Supreme Court ruled in the case, officially
titled Obergefell v. Hodges, that the
constitution guarantees a right to same-sex
marriage.
The majority opinion, authored by Justice
Anthony Kennedy, argued that samesex marriage bans were a violation of
the 14th amendment’s equal protection
clause, which prohibits states from denying
citizens equal protection under the law.
After many pages of legal reasoning,
Kennedy ended his opinion with this
eloquent rumination on marriage:
“No union is more profound than marriage, for
it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity,
devotion, sacrifice, and family. In forming a
marital union, two people become something
greater than they once were. As some of the
petitioners in these cases demonstrate, marriage
embodies a love that may endure even past
death. It would misunderstand these men
and women to say they disrespect the idea of
marriage. Their plea is that they do respect
it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its
fulfillment for themselves. Their hope is not to
be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded
from one of civilization’s oldest institutions.
They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law.
The Constitution grants them that right. The
judgment of the Court of Appeals for the Sixth
Circuit is reversed.It is so ordered.”
Here in Santa Clarita, almost 100 members
of the community gathered at Todd
Longshore Park the same day to celebrate.
A crowd of elementary-age children,
teenagers, parents – even a 98-year-old
grandmother – was diverse and rejoicing.
I attended primarily as a journalist for The
Gazette, but also as a tremendous believer
in gay rights myself. The people I spoke
with were kind and compassionate, funny
and insightful. Many had tremendous

I Rant, You Decide
For the First Time:
I’ve been writing this rant column for over three years now and this is the first
time I can remember not wanting to address something that exploded through
the media. I seriously considered avoiding this altogether, as many of my friends
are deeply divided, including those who are Christians. But, a wise friend said
something to the effect of “you know your readers will be expecting something.”
Please know I have had gay employees, colleagues and friends over the years,
resulting in nothing but mutual respect and friendship, so homophobia is not an
issue. To me, this polarizing topic gets down to two different areas of discussion:
spirituality and the political aspect.
I believe the Bible is truly God’s spoken word, and it’s hard to deny that God
has proclaimed any sort of sexual immorality a sin, including having sex with
someone who is the same gender. This goes against popular cultural thinking
and if you are a person of faith and don’t like it or it makes you uncomfortable,
I get it. I wish some of God’s commands were easier to follow, but they are what
they are. In my opinion, a true believer cannot pick and choose which teachings
of God he or she likes and wants to believe in.
He tells us in the Bible that we shouldn’t lie, cheat, steal, get angry, covet
material things, lust, gossip or judge others. You know, the stuff I screw-up on
daily, but it’s not hard to understand why he wants us to avoid such thinking and
behavior. People of faith are forgiven for all of these human weaknesses, but a
true believer aims to avoid them as a matter of desire and obedience.
If you are not a believer in God or if you are and choose not to believe in parts
of the bible, then none of my spiritual ranting should matter a hill of beans to
you and that’s okay with me. God grants us all free will and you are exercising
yours.
No matter your feelings on what the Supreme Court ruled on last week
and what side of the spiritual fence you stand on, no one will know the
consequences of anything we think and do here on earth until after we take our
last breath. At that point, each and every one of us will find out one way or the
other.
Rancid Socialism!
As you can imagine, the political part of this is an easier rant for me. The
Supreme Court rulings are just more of the socialistic tidal wave that is
sickeningly washing over our nation. The liberal justices have shown their true
colors by making decisions that are judicial activism in an attempt to achieve
social engineering without giving a rip as to common or constitutional sense.
As an example, their decision that unintentional housing discrimination is illegal,
is a clear sign they want to manipulate the natural free enterprise system in
regard to housing. I’m no lawyer, but how do you defend yourself, if you truly
did not intend to discriminate? There has to be a constitutional speed bump in
there somewhere, right? But, their emotions got in the way of a common sense
judicial decision, just as it has with other recent rulings. If you don’t agree with
me, just ask Justice Scalia.
Bigger Fish to Fry:
No matter the angst of the gay marriage and Obamacare rulings, we have a
heap more trouble that could really affect our overall wellbeing as people and
a society. Even my utter disdain of our nation falling into socialism pales by
comparison to my concern of terrorism, economic collapse and civil anarchy.

consequences, just like what is happening across the ocean. Try to imagine: Your
bank is closed this week, you don’t know if your savings is still in there, your retirement
account could be wiped out, you’re trying to buy food, gas and support your family on
the $67 withdrawal limit from your favorite ATM and your debit card won’t work. The
grocery store shelves are bare, your kids and dogs are hungry. You don’t know how you’re
going to pay the stack of bills sitting on your desk. You’re glued to the TV watching
and listening for any hope to alleviate your anxiety and the President is saying “we are
broke and need help.” The kids can sense your worry and it has them freaked out. Can’t
happen here? Think again, look it up for yourself.
What is so maddening is our leaders could start avoiding this today, if they
would only pull their selfish heads out of their butts and look to what’s best for
all of us. Sadly, there is a blue print right in front of them that is showing the
error of our ways, if only they would look at it and react.

Social Media Marketing to Grow Your Business

Tim wrote in to ask me what I was doing with
social media to grow my business. I’ve been on the
most influential social sites for seven or eight years
now and continue to use them for my business in a
variety of ways. Let’s have a discussion of the sites
I feel are the most important during 2015 and how
they will help you to accelerate your success.
The “Big Three” of social media continue to be
LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter. Additionally,
YouTube is crucial to your business success, and
this year I have added Google Plus, Pinterest, and
Instagram to my list of “must have” sites for your
online presence. Let’s take a look at how each one
of these sites can help you.
Facebook can be time-consuming and trivial if
you are there to connect with friends and family.
Instead, I recommend creating a Facebook “page”
using the name of your business or the name of
your city and industry. For example, if you visit
https://www.facebook.com/SantaClaritaDentist
you will see a page for a dentist in the Santa Clarita
area. This is an excellent way to connect with existing and new clients and customers on a regular
basis.
LinkedIn was more of a corporate site in years
past, but now the social aspect of it has taken
precedence. Set up your profile and then allow it to
search through your email contacts to see who else
you know that is already there. Then start reaching out to people in a systematic way to build your
connections. I’ve done this over the past two years
and now have a network of more than 20 million
people around the world! The next step is to set up
a profile for your business. The site has a step-by-
step way to do this quickly.

Twitter is much more than just the 140 characters
you can “tweet” out at any time. Use it to send
messages about your business throughout the day.
There are sites you can use to do this for you so
that you hit several time zones across the country

could tweet about the importance of brushing and
flossing, and start a discussion about how often
people should come in for a routine checkup and
cleaning. Once you get the conversation started,
people will take notice.
YouTube is also an excellent way to get the word
out about your business. See what the dentist has

The idea here is to tell the story of your business
through short (under five minutes is best) videos.
You can easily create these with your smart phone
and then upload them to YouTube on your phone
as well.
Pinterest is also all about pictures. Set up a business profile there and add some photos of yourself,
your business, and what you do to serve your clients and customers. This site uses something called
“boards” that are intended to share details on a
specific topic. Using the dentist as an example,
one board could talk about cosmetic dentistry and
show some examples of people who have had work
done. Another could be about the office itself and
show photos of the dentist and all of the support
staff. Search for the keywords that apply to your
business to see who else is using this site to get the
word out about their businesses and connect with
them.
Google Plus requires you to sign up through a free
Gmail account. Then you can update regularly
with the happenings of your business. Use it to announce anything that customers and clients would
be interested in knowing about. Again, updates
with images are always more interesting. Also, con-

Canyon Country Advisory Committee Drought
Decisions Important in Good Times and Bad

By now, I am convinced there are very few Santa Clarita residents who do not
know we are currently experiencing the fourth year of a drought. With water
becoming increasingly scarcer, our water bills, newspapers, and even billboards constantly remind us of the need to conserve. Yet, when trying to gain
insight about the issue, it becomes clear the magnitude of our valley’s water
use is staggering. Currently, it is estimated, the Santa Clarita Valley uses 60
million gallons of water each day. Two-thirds of the amount is consumed by
irrigation and 20 million gallons a day is processed by our sanitation district’s
two waste water treatment plants.
As with any emergency, our elected officials appear in front of media cameras
ready to save the day. Governor Brown jumped in and signed an executive order asking urban residential users to reduce water consumption by 20 percent.
When it still did not rain, he made water conservation mandatory and said,
“People should realize we’re in a new era. … The idea of your nice, little
green grass getting lots of water every day, that’s going to be a thing of the
past. We’re not going to change things overnight, but we are in a transition
period. People have to realize that in many parts of California, they are living
in a desert.”
So, let’s put this in perspective. Urban water use represents 20 percent of
California water consumption. If residents accounted for 100 percent of urban water use and residents reduced their water consumption by 25 percent,
overall California water use would drop by only 5 percent. What that means
is, if California had one year of water supply left and we conserved 5 percent
of total demand, it would extend our water supply by a mere 18 days. The
numbers show that conservation alone will not solve this dilemma.
Ken Pulskamp, Santa Clarita’s prior city manager, was often quoted as saying,
“We really take the approach that the decisions made in good times are more
important than the ones made in bad times.”
So, what did we do when there was plenty of water available? Is this California’s first drought? Is this the first time Santa Clarita has experienced water
rationing? Of course not. As a community, we need to look back to what
decisions were made in “good times” which would have reduced today’s
shortage.
First, the State of California has not built any major water projects for
over 30 years. Right now, our state seems more focused on a high speed rail
boondoggle than anything else. But, there are local projects the City and
County could execute to reduce the effect of future droughts. Currently, the
Santa Clarita Sanitation District produces 20 million gallons a day of nonpotable water, which could be used to supplement irrigation needs, but today
it is simply discarded in the river instead. Just think about it. Twenty million
gallons a day represents 33 percent of our current water needs. Oh yes, there
are rules that will not let us use it all, but right now we use almost none of it.
Our city is planting and refurbishing medians, while including (purple) piping
for irrigation, using non-potable water. Unfortunately, the delivery system has
not been implemented so it goes unused. Secondly, a system to capture water
when it rains (storm water) could be constructed and additional non-potable
capacity obtained. None of this can happen instantaneously and the cost is
high.
It is time the county, city and our water providers come together with a real
action plan and yearly financial commitment.
This will not be easy and missteps will occur, but I remember what Theodore
Roosevelt said: “In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the
right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can
do is nothing.”
Doing nothing is not a realistic option in good times or bad. Let’s make our
voices heard and get the ball rolling.

Restaurant of the Week
Mike’s Original Diner

The 24-hour restaurant once known by Castaic locals as “Mike’s
Diner” is going back to its roots after being reclaimed by the
restaurant’s owners, the Harutunians, who managed it themselves
from 1978 to 1986.
Head Chef Rosalio Alvarez, who has cooked for the diner since 1979,
has been joined by a second head chef, Trent Franklin. Menu items
range from chicken pot pies and homemade corned beef to burgers
and philly cheese steak sandwiches.
Daniel and Mike Harutunian, sons of longtime owners Mayis and
Christine Harutunian, took over management of the restaurant in
May with plans to bring back the small-town, family-run feel it was
once known for.
“(It’s) traditional diner food – stepped up,” Daniel said.
“We wanted to go back to our roots,” Daniel said of the decision to
change the restaurant’s name to “Mike’s Original Diner.” “We want
to show people that we’ve been there. We are original.”
In the last few months, the Harutunian brothers have restored the
menu to its original glory, bringing back its traditional recipes and
revamping the way they prepare their food.
“Some of the foods, like burgers, had started to come prepackaged or
frozen,” Daniel said. “We don’t want that. … (We want) traditionalmade diner food, done in-house. We employ actual chefs, not prep
cooks. We roll our own burgers; we make all of our own chili. We
don’t own a microwave.”
The Harutunian family isn’t the only reason Mike’s Original Diner
has a unique multi-generational feel; one waitress first started working
at the diner alongside her mother, and now a mother herself, she and
her three children are continuing the family tradition.
“We (also) have multiple generations of families who come in and say,
‘My dad used to bring me in,’” Daniel said. “We used to have a ton of
regulars who used to run their companies from our dinner tables. …
During the big winter storms that closed the grapevine, before ATMs
and credit cards, my parents used to handle truck drivers that were out
of money by honoring their IOUs.”

Food Served Free to Kids at Summer Meal Program
Children between the ages of one and 18 are entitled to free breakfast and lunch all summer. There are seven different locations in the
area where local kids can drop in for free food. Each location has a designated time for meal service (see the table below).
There is no previous certification needed to eat at the participating schools/locations. Kids who receive meals do not have to be members of the Boys & Girls Club or the Santa Clarita Community Center to participate at those locations, but at all venues, food must be
consumed at the site.

Athlete of the Week
Spencer Rathkamp
As popular a sport as mountain biking is in this area, there are few who rise to the level of
20-year-old Spencer Rathkamp. The William S. Hart High School graduate recently won the U.S.
Cup Cat 1 Mens XC Mountain Bike Racing series. Beginning the series on March 1 at Vail Lake,
there were eight California events in the series where Rathkamp competes, most recently in Big
Bear. This month he went to Missoula, Mont., where he finished with a 2nd place overall in his
class. He then headed to Colorado Springs, Colo. and earned a first place. From July 14-19 he
competes in Mammoth Mountain in the USA Cross Country Bicycle Nationals.
The sport has taken Rathkamp to numerous U.S. destinations and Brazil, but it all started in
Santa Clarita, where he has lived his entire life. He initially got involved in bicycle racing through
the SoCal High School Cycling League, which started in Santa Clarita about five years ago, according to the cyclist’s father, Bob Rathkamp.

“We went to a meeting in Saugus when he was a junior and he got involved then … (for) two
years he raced on the Hart composite team, and after he graduated Hart High in 2012, he started
to compete in other event series, such as the U.S. and Kenda Cup,” said Bob Rathkamp.
Spencer is currently a student at College of the Canyons and is employed by Road Bike Action
Magazine as a photographer and test rider. He tries to ride about 2-3 hours a day and his sponsors

Football to Santa Clarita to Movies
Brandon Miree, former NFL player
and new resident of the Santa Clarita
Valley, utilizes the art of filmmaking
to inspire and touch lives.
Growing up in Cincinnati, Ohio,
Miree had always wanted to play
football.
The player recalls, “I thought I didn’t
have big enough shoulders to play
football, not knowing they were
wearing shoulder pads.”
Aside from these amusing doubts,
Miree followed his dreams, continuing his passion for football throughout high school and college, but a
common theme in his life has always
been his interest in the captivating
powers of storytelling.
Miree attended school at the University of Alabama and the University of Pittsburgh, where he played
college football. In his last year of
undergraduate studies, he took a
creative writing course, fueling his
desire to write. Intrigued by the art,
Miree told his tutor that he wanted
to be a writer, and began to draft and
create scripts as a hobby.
Soon after, Miree was drafted by the
Denver Broncos, and while playing,
he began acting in commercials also,
slowly entering the entertainment
scene. Again, Miree began to crave
the feeling that came with creating
and writing. While taking a filmmaking course, he took on the task
of creating a full short – and following through from start to finish.
Miree had been warned by peers
that the original visions of a film
project often do not follow through
to the end, because of the extensive
oversight and revising these works
go through. So, he decided that
becoming a director would allow
for more control of the process and
keep the original ideas and vision
intact.
Following the course, Miree made
connections and became co-owner of
Street Radio Entertainment, where
he was executive producer on the
film “Everything’s Jake,” a story
of two homeless men surviving on
the streets. Miree continually wrote
scripts and looked for new projects,
always looking to bring to life new
stories.
Around the time Miree finished
playing for the Green Bay Packers,
he moved back to Cincinnati to start
fresh with philanthropic endeavors.
“In the movie industry, it takes years
for things to come into fruition,”
Miree states. “Sometimes you work
for years on a project and it’s back to
square one.”
So he went back to Ohio after he
stopped playing and started somemarketing and real estate businesses—but he never stopped writing.

His latest project is an online series
entitled “A Beautiful Mess Inside,” a
story about a woman who must find
herself after her well-to-do husband
leaves her. Straying from the tired,
safe, formulaic ways of the movie industry, he continues to write and use

In September of 2013, Miree got
married and made the decision that
they would move to California,
where they would be closer to Los
Angeles, the heart of the entertainment industry. He started a transportation company during this period,

COC Trustee Honored
From enrolling in College of the Canyons classes during its infancy to serving
as president of the Santa Clarita Community College District Board of Trustees,
Michele Jenkins was selected as a worthy recipient of a recent award. She was
recognized by the Community College League of California, the organization
representing the state’s 72 college districts, when she was awarded the CCLC’s
“Fulfilling the Trust” service award at the organization’s annual conference.
Jenkins currently serves as the president of the Santa Clarita Community College
District Board of Trustees, which oversees the college. First elected in 1984, she
currently is the longest continuously serving member of the board.
“I’m honored to be elected by the community to serve as a
trustee, and work on behalf of our 30,000 students to ensure
they have the same life-changing opportunities available to
them that College of the Canyons created for me and my family,” Jenkins said.
After receiving her associate degree from COC, Michele transferred to the University of California, Los Angeles to complete
her bachelor’s degree program in anthropology. She went on to
earn her master’s degree in counseling from the University of
North Dakota.
Eventually, she and her husband Greg returned to the Santa
Clarita Valley, where he created the moniker for, and was the
founding partner of, The Doctors’ Office. Michele served as
the practice manager. Later, Michele and Greg opened Dr.
Jenkins’ solo private family medical practice.
“College of the Canyons gave me the opportunity to prove to myself that I could
achieve my goals. It laid a foundation for what I have accomplished, so I have a
personal and passionate belief in the value of community colleges,” Jenkins said.
“And that’s what motivates me to serve on the Board of Trustees.”
COC Chancellor Dr. Dianne Van Hook commented on Jenkins’ service to the
college.
“Michele is the epitome of commitment and dedication, and sets the standard for
service as a community college trustee,” Dr. Van Hook said. “She is selfless with
her time, and her greatest reward is the satisfaction that comes from seeing lives
changed by the power of education.”
During her three decades of service on the Board of Trustees, Michele has held
the positions of president, vice president and clerk of the board numerous times.
She has served as the COC Foundation Board liaison, and participated in a number of ad hoc groups, including the committee that determined the feasibility of
returning football and expanding women’s athletics at COC, as well as the Measure “C” Advisory Committee and the Health and Welfare Benefits Committee.
Michele has also been extremely active at the state level, representing College of
the Canyons and the Santa Clarita Community College
District and providing leadership for trustees statewide.
She spent 11 years on the California Community College Trustees Board of Directors, including serving as
the CCCT president, as well as the president of the
Community College League of California.
Of all her accomplishments as a board member, she
points to one as a defining moment in the history of the
college: hiring Dr. Van Hook to lead the college in 1988.
Jenkins was president of the board then, and made what
was considered a gutsy decision at the time, but one that
clearly changed the course of the college’s direction.
“She had the courage to lead the board in hiring a woman to lead the college when there were just a handful of
female community college presidents in California,” Dr.
Van Hook said. “But that speaks to Michele’s courage as a leader, and her belief
in the potential of people.”
Jenkins’ connection to College of the Canyons is a family affair. Her husband
Greg also received his associate degree at COC. Their son and daughter attended
the college as well, with Michele’s mother and father volunteering for many years
in the college’s community services and security departments, respectively.
“College of the Canyons is an amazing place,” she said. “I’m proud to be an
alumna, and it’s been a tremendous privilege to serve as a board member and
help shape the college’s growth, increasing quality, and service to students for
more than 30 years.”

New Legislation to “Lock Up” Weapons
Gains Steam

Accidental shootings still happen too frequently. For years, stories have popped
up in the news about children getting their hands on their parents’ weapons and
accidentally, tragically shooting themselves, their friends or their family. Lately,
lawmakers in Los Angeles have been pondering new legislation that would help
minimize the chances of these tragic accidents from occurring in the future. One
such idea that has been gaining steam recently is to require that residents lock up
or install trigger locks on their guns when they aren’t in use.
The idea was put forth by City Councilman Paul Kerkorian, and has met with
some opposition from law enforcement; specifically, the city police officer’s
union. The union believes that police officers should be exempt from the new
legislation. The exemption would include both current and reserve officers, as
well as those who have retired. They argue that police officers, whether active or
retired, could require fast access to their firearms in order to protect themselves.
Sometimes, police officers or their families are targeted by criminals, such as the
recent case involving Michael Dorner. Additionally, union officials cite the fact
that retired officers have gone through a significant amount of training when it
comes to safety and their weapons.
Councilman Kerkorian wasn’t too keen on changing the wording regarding
the proposition, and he cited a San Francisco ordinance that follows along the
same lines. However, Councilman Mitch Englander recently proposed that an
addendum be added to the proposition exempting those who possess concealed
carry permits from being obligated to comply. Those who wish to obtain a
concealed carry permit must first apply
and agree to a thorough background
check, extensive training, and must be
approved by law enforcement officials. Typically, in L.A. County, the permits are
granted to current and former police officers and judges, as well as a few others.
One of those who does not agree with the concerns of the city police officer’s
union is Councilwoman Nury Martinez. She claims that locking up a firearm
should be standard practice for anyone, regardless of one’s law enforcement past
or present, as an issue of safety. Skeptics are also concerned about the fact that
“anyone” who possesses a concealed carry permit would be exempt from the
law, and some people who possess them may not necessarily deserve them.
The revised plan, which includes an exemption for concealed carry permit
holders, will be debated by the City Council in about a month. Even with the
exemption, it’s unclear if the police officer’s union will accept the amended plan,
or push for more.

Arrests for physical violence seem to be keeping up with the heat of local temperatures lately. A 45-year-old unemployed Newhall man was arrested for rape
by force/fear.
A salesman from Lancaster and a gardener from Canyon Country were both
charged with cruelty to a child likely to produce great bodily harm/death. A
40-year-old cashier from Van Nuys was charged with assault of an elderly adult.
An unemployed 49-year-old Saugus woman was picked up for corporal injury
on a spouse/cohabitant. A 37-year-old realtor and a 39-year-old clerk from
Castaic were each picked up for battery against a former spouse.
A 20-year-old Porterville, Calif. man who works as a guide was cited for carrying a loaded firearm on his person/vehicle in public.
A 39-year-old general contractor from Lancaster was arrested for robbery. An
unemployed 30-year-old Lancaster woman, a 43-year-old self-employed Castaic
man and a 27-year-old unemployed Canyon Country man were picked up for
grand theft of money/property greater than $400.
A 42-year-old house cleaner from Valencia and a 34-year-old Palmdale chef
were charged with forgery of a check/bill, etc. not greater than $950.
A 46-year-old paper clerk from Sacramento was picked up for taking a vehicle
without the owner’s consent.

Old Town Newhall Farmers Market Moves to Lyons & Railroad

Thousands of local residents have acquired fresh fruits and vegetables,
organic produce, dairy products and gift items at the Old Town Newhall
Farmers Market over the years. They can still spend their Saturdays doing
so, just in a location down the street from where it used to operate.
Formerly held at the Newhall Community Center, the market has
moved to the corner of Lyons Avenue and Railroad Avenue for greater
accessibility to residents. The year-round market will continue to be held
every Saturday – rain or shine – from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Santa Clarita Marathon Registration Opens
This is the 20th year of the Santa Clarita
Marathon hosted by the City of Santa
Clarita. The race will be held on Sunday,
November 8, 2015 and is presented by Parkway Motorcars in Valencia. The challenging
racing events, including a marathon, two
person marathon relay, half marathon, 5k
run, Mayor’s Walk and Kid K Fun Run, are
open for online registration on Wednesday,
July 1, 2015.
The City’s marathon is USA Track & Field
certified and an official qualifying race for
the Boston Marathon. The Santa Clarita
Marathon is designed to test the physical
boundaries of the human body while promoting health and fitness among residents.
To kick off the event, the City will also host a
pre-race Health and Fitness Expo presented
by Boston Scientific on Saturday, November
7, 2015 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the
Hyatt Regency Valencia. The free Expo will
feature various health-related vendors and

Two Square Dances
Coming Up
This Sunday, the Sierra Hillbillies Square Dance Club
will hold a patriotic “Red, White & Blue Dance” at
the Senior Center. Caller Rod Shuping will lead the

Terrorists, Giant Bears & M*A*S*H in a Crash
On This Date in SCV History:
Wishing you all a most wonderful 4th of
July. Happy Birthday to all of us. Here’s
a look at what happened in one of the
most interesting valleys in all the world —
ours…
IN EONS GONE BY …
• Happy Birthday to Iggy. Ignacio del Valle,
son of Antonio and owner of the Rancho
San Francisco (which would later be most
of the SCV) was born on July 1, 1808 in
Jalisco, Mexico.
• At our centennial in 1876 in Philadelphia, a sample of opaque, white oil was
marveling fairgoers. This mystery mineral
came from our own backyard in Placerita
Canyon. In fact, there still is a “secret”
well where the white oil bubbles to near the
surface.
• On July 7, 1871, John Lang killed a record 2,350-pound grizzly bear up Soledad
Canyon. According to some, this bruin
would eventually become the model that is
on our California state flag. (There is still
debate whether the Monarch of Ventura
County or Lang’s epic bear was the model
AND for WHICH California flag.)
• Another B-day: July 8, 1876, Demetrius
Scofield forms the California Star Oil
Works and hires a young driller named
Charles “Alex” Mentry. C.A.M. would
later develop oil in Mentryville.
• Another B-day: R.E. Nickel publishes the
SECOND Santa Clarita Valley newspaper
ever — the Acton Rooster, on July 15,
1891. Newhall had a small paper for a
while in the late 1860s — a single broadsheet.
90 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK, 1925
• A rare and epic July cloudburst dumped
two quick inches of rain in Acton down
to Mint Canyon. A wall of water nearly
four-feet high came roaring down and by
the time it got to where the Home Depot is
today, the Santa Clara River was, briefly, a
quarter mile wide.
• The Green Oaks Dance Pavilion 90 years
ago housed a 40 x 60 dance floor in Honby
(by Mike’s Tire Man today). It had live
orchestra dancing Wednesday through
Sunday nights.
• Moonshiner Rube Hutchinson was
nabbed by local agents with gallons of
fresh whiskey. Rube did serious jail time
and was fined the cost of two new houses
then — $1,000.
• A huge rattlesnake left fang marks nearly
1.5 inches apart on little Charlie Perkins’
leg. The boy was the youngest son of
historian and water works mogul A.B. The
hospital had an electric “sucking” machine
that got out the venom.
• Bill Mahue was called the Hay King of
Southern California. He might have been
demoted to Hay Duke. One of his barns
burned, engulfing 2,000 bales. The 25 tons
was worth about $3,000 in Depression-era
money.
• Frank Schneider took a red rooster for
his family’s 4th of July dinner and made
more than enough money to buy dessert.
Seems the bird had found a discarded shirt
somewhere that had solid gold buttons and
• Newhall Land announced they leased
land on Soledad to build one of the state’s
largest drive-in movie theaters — The
Mustang. Originally, it was supposed to
accommodate 1,200 cars.

before anyone lost a tooth.
• A small argument of raised voices broke
out between Mint Canyon School and the
Mint Canyon Farm Bureau. Seems the
former tried to charge the latter $10 for hall
rental and $10 for piano usage, which the
farmers didn’t use. The farmers pointed
out to the principal that they built the darn
school themselves…
• Hundreds of buildings were destroyed in
the big Santa Barbara Earthquake. It was
felt here, rattling nerves and china cabinets.
We sent a healthy contingent to help in
relief efforts.
• Paul Kodt was the most embarrassed man
in town. He was arrested by Constable Biddison for leaving a campfire unattended in
the National Forest and polluting a stream.
Kodt? He was the local Boy Scout master.
• Government continued to grow and grow.
Many locals, along with most of the state,
were angry over a new 2.5 percent sales
tax. There were statewide riots. A local
farmer pointed out with all the various taxes, including gasoline, the average worker
was paying $100 a year in taxes. That’s a
big piece of the pie when you consider a
lot of common folk weren’t pulling in five
bucks a week.
• After a few years tied up in court, the
estate of George Freeman was settled.
He gave all his money to the Presbyterian
Church.
• Crews rushed out to extinguish a truck
fire. The cargo? Hundreds of cases of
primo wine. Dozens of disappointed
motorists were parked nearby on Highway
99, waiting for the fire department to start
chucking cases off the truck. It never happened. The fire didn’t reach the wine and
not a single bottle was damaged.
• The newly-formed Hart District put up
some “help wanted” signs for people to
help build three temporary classrooms for
the new high school. It housed only ninth
graders in 1945 and the campus was actually Newhall Elementary at first. Truck
drivers (for any vehicle under 6 tons) were
paid 95 cents an hour, just a smidge over
general laborers, who earned 87 cents an
hour. Highest paid worker on the buildings
was the electrical foreman, who earned a
whopping $1.95 an hour.
• Apathy almost cancelled the 4th of July
Parade. But, a last-minute impromptu —
and illegal — gathering was launched.
People marched down San Fernando
road, carrying the American flag (and one
Confederate one). There were 12 of them.
Soon, as they marched down the street,
people ran out of shops and stores and
houses and joined them. Trucks and cars
followed along as impromptu floats. The
Sheriff was driving the opposite direction
of the illegal parade (which had no permits). He took off his hat and blocked his
vision so he wouldn’t see it.
• “East of Eden” was playing at The
American Theater. The young star, James
This week in 1896, Pacific Bell made a deal
with Newhall Land & Farming and started the
first phone lines in the SCV. The first phone
here was installed at Campton’s Store in 1900
and shortly thereafter, at NL&F HQ. The first
private resident to have a phone was Ralph
Carr, who worked for Pac Bell (1910). There
was a second phone line for a while, belonging
to the United States Long Distance Telephone
Company, which also ran through Campton’s
(1898). Pearl Russell worked in that store and
part of her job was to answer the rare phone
call, and physically walk or ride a horse over to
a person’s house to tell them they had a longdistance call.
Dean, would later have his last meal at
Tip’s up here and die in a car crash in Central California.
• Here’s a story as old as the automobile.
Two young local men, bright and popular,
were killed in a car accident after a 4th of
July party.
• The water woes of customers for the
Bouquet Canyon Water Co. reached crisis
levels when a young girl was rushed to the
hospital for dehydration. Some customers
were without water an average of eight
hours a day. Others were forced to fill every
tub and sink in the house in the mornings
before the water pressure shut down. The
Bonelli family, which owned the private
water company, had a plethora of woes,
including a heavy equipment operator
strike and a new tank that collapsed. Then,
a water main burst. Then, developers kept
building new houses in the water-stricken
areas and people kept buying them. Eventually, supervisor Warren Dorn slapped
a freeze on new construction in Bouquet
Canyon.
A HALF CENTURY AGO THIS WEEK,
1965
• The Wm. S. Hart District fired one of the
best teachers ever to draw a breath. Marvin
Alexander, despite protests by hundreds of
students, teachers and parents, was fired by
a rather cement-headed group of trustees. The English teacher died a few years
after that, some say, myself included, of a
broken heart.
• Hart High grad Dickie Suggs was the 41st
player chosen in the Major League Baseball
draft and the first choice of the Kansas City
Athletics.
• An odd contingent of local businessmen
and ranchers were hanging around Olvera
Street in Downtown Los Angeles. They
had formed a caravan from the SCV to
meet in the historic square to deliver the
petition to form our own government: Canyon County. Noble effort. Alas, CC passed
locally by about 65-35 percent and failed
county-wide at the same ratio.
• The Saugus Speedway hosted “Hot Pants
Night.” Very patriotic.
• M*A*S*H star Wayne Rogers and his
family were in a car accident here. Rogers
was involved in a collision involving two
big rigs — a diesel fuel truck and double
rig carrying carrots — in Valencia. Besides
Rogers (who played McIntyre on the
classic, which was filmed out here) was
his wife, Mitzi, and their two children,
Laura and William. Also with them was
Jacqueline Falk, nine-year-old daughter of
actor Peter Falk. The group was treated for
various cuts, contusions and bruises, then
released. The group went back to Beverly
Hills by taxi.
• It’s not so much that the U.S. Postal
Service raised their box rental fees. It was
the staggering amount. Prior to this day, it
cost $3.40 a year to rent the smallest mail
box. With the issuing of an edict, the price
jumped overnight to $14 annually.
• A Saudi national, two Egyptians and two
Jordanians were arrested in a distant Santa
Clarita canyon. Elashyi Hazim Medhat,
the 24-year-old citizen from Saudi Arabia,
was arrested for possessing and firing stolen automatic weapons. A park employee
at Hungry Valley reported “six-to-seven
Iranian types” were firing bursts of automatic weapons in the remote area. About
25 officers from Ventura and L.A. counties,
along with park rangers and members of
the federal Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms
descended on the group. The group was
questioned by LAPD’s anti-terrorism unit.
• Mike Miller, a pilot who had just taken
off from Agua Dulce, suffered engine
problems. He landed on the 14. Commuters helped him push his little two-seater to
an offramp. Miller was unhurt.
• Temperatures hit as high as 117 in Canyon Country. The official reading on the
4th was 108 during the running of the 10K
run. Ow.
• During Newhall’s big fireworks show, a
skywriting plane hired by Trius Construction Co. marred the opening of the show.
Some folks were so mad, they wanted the
plane shot down.

My favorite buddy is my puppy Ronda.
She is a French bulldog and she is 8 weeks old. She
can only have a bath once a week, but we do have
dog wipes that we clean her with. We can’t take her
anywhere unless there are no dogs around because
she doesn’t have all her shots yet. She is about the
size of a medium shoe box. I also have another dog
named BJ, who is a Yorkie. He is about the size of
a big shoe box. These are the dogs at my mom’s
house. The dogs at my dad’s house are Lucy and
Zeke. Zeke is big chocolate Labrador, while Lucy is
a small Shi Tzu dog.

Mermaids with my friends! It is so much fun to play
in the pool!

My favorite friend’s name is Sofia. Sofia
and I don’t see each other that much anymore, but
we would always sing together at preschool. She
and I are both Korean. One time, Sofia’s mom accidently took me picked up from preschool because
she thought that I was Sofia! Another reason I liked
her a lot is because she was so nice and kind. That is
why Sofia is my favorite friend.
My favorite thing to do during the summer
is to go to Big Bear Lake. One reason is because I
like to play in the sand and water there. Another
reason is my family and I always go there the week
before school starts every year. In conclusion, I love
going to Big Bear Lake with my family!

I have a dog named Layla. I love her
because she loves me too and she is cute. Layla and
my sister Crystal and I like to run and play in the
park together. She is the best dog ever!

My favorite thing to do is to go swimming
and play in the pool. I have a diving board to practice diving with. I also have a net and a tennis racket
that can be used to play with in the water. I can do
handstands and somersaults in the pool as well. My

My favorite friend’s name is Yara. She is
my favorite friend because she is funny and kind
along with other good things. Yara and I go to each
other’s house and we also go to a place called the
Paseo Club. Yara and I also go to Stevenson Ranch
and Sunshine Camp. At Sunshine, we always play
together. I also like Yara’s curly hair! Yara is a wonderful friend to have!

Manatees are amazing under sea friends.
I read a book called Sam the Sea Cow and this is
what I learned.
Manatees nurse their young in the water.
Manatees are also mammals just like whales and
dolphins. All mammals feed their babies milk from
special parts of their bodies that are called mammary glands.
Mammals have no outside ears. Manatees
graze on floating hyacinths like cows in a pasture.
They also have flat teeth. Manatees leave their
mother when they are two years old.

Morton’s Fork, a play which offers an opponent a choice of evils. Here, the
Fork allows Declarer to bring home the 6♥ contract.

After drawing trumps, you cross to the ♦A and ruff a Diamond. Now you lead
the ♠K and West will be impaled on one of these prongs:
First Prong: If West wins the ♠K with his Ace he manages to score
his Spade, but not without cost. Now Dummy has an extra entry (in Spades)
and you have the timing to ruff out the Diamonds. You no longer need the
2 Clubs.
Second Prong: If West ducks the ♠K then you cross to the ♣K, cash
Dummy’s ♦K (pitching your remaining Spade), give up a Club, and romp
home with 12 tricks. In this variation the defense never scores a Spade trick.
This hand required perfect timing! It was necessary to cash just one high
Diamond and then ruff a Diamond before playing on Spades. If you had
neglected to do that then you had no chance of getting the long Diamond
established. And it would have been fatal to cash both Diamonds before
playing on Spades, that would have rendered the fork’s second prong inoperable. A very pretty deal!
