Residents of more than 2,200 homes have temporarily relocated after the gas leak was discovered at the Aliso Canyon storage facility. The California Air Resources Board measured 97,000 pounds of methane being released into the atmosphere per hour in early November. By late December, about 66,000 pounds per hour were still spewing out. The charges include three counts of failing to report the release of hazardous materials and one count of discharging air contaminants, according to a news release by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. A lawyer representing the gas company entered the plea to Judge Alan Rosenfield shortly after 9 a.m. during an arraignment hearing held at theSanta Clarita Courthouse. photo courtesy of hometownstation.com “While we recognize that neither the criminal charges nor the civil lawsuits will offer the residents of Los Angeles County a complete solution,” District Attorney Jackie Lacey said in the release, “it is important that Southern California Gas Co. be held responsible for its criminal actions.” If convicted, SoCalGas could be fined up to $25,000 a day for each day that it failed to notify the California Office of Emergency Services of the leak. The company may also face fines of up to $1,000 per day for air pollution violations. SoCalGas Co. announced on Feb. 11 that emissions from the leak had stopped and that crews would work around the clock to seal the well with cement. Although he remains on a ventilator, his condition has improved since Saturday when he was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital in critical condition, said Santa Clarita Mayor Bob Kellar. “I just left Dick Jeffrey a few minutes ago and can tell everybody that all of the prayers are paying off,” Kellar said Tuesday. “Dick was conscious and alert. He is still on a ventilator but it’s hoped it may be removed today.” Jeffrey is a staple in the Santa Clarita Valley as a champion for veterans’ causes and is the chairman and president of Back to the War Zone, a nonprofit organization dedicated to veterans who served in combat operations abroad. continued from front page Aliso Canyon Trial nothing wrong, and had made “prompt notifications to multiple agencies.” Mizrahi declined to mention which agencies, citing the names as details of the case, but said that residents were notified within days of the leak being discovered. “We do not believe a criminal prosecution is warranted here,” he said. A pretrial court date was set for April 19. “Dick Jeffrey is one of the heroes of Santa Clarita. His passion for his fellow veterans is incredible,” said KHTS AM-1220 Co-owner Carl Goldman. “He is part of the leadership advocating for our Santa Clarita veterans. Our thoughts and prayers go out for a speedy recovery.” While fighting as a U.S. Marine in Vietnam, Jeffrey saw firsthand the impact of combat trauma on his friends. Veterans who were able to travel to their former areas of combat returned home significantly better able to cope with their lives, families, jobs and society than those who did not, according to Back to the War Zone. Towsley Canyon Gets 100 New Parking Spaces H the groundwater recharge potential of the site is restored. Materials from the clearing were recycled and diverted from the landfill as much as possible. The new gravel parking lot extension is free and open to the public. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of this new convenient amenity. The new parking lot opened last week and in a few weeks is scheduled to receive lodge pole fencing surrounding the perimeter and a new trailhead kiosk. At that time, the city will also open an additional 118 acres just north of the property, which contains a new 2.3-mile loop trail. ikers and Shakespeare aficionados alike will be pleased with the latest parking lot construction on the west side of the Santa Clarita Valley. Nearly 100 new parking spaces are now available near the Towsley Canyon trails, which is also useful for the Santa Clarita Shakespeare Festival at Rivendale. Before the City of Santa Clarita purchased the property in the late 1990s, the parking lot area was known as Rivendale Ranch and was occupied with abandoned structures from its prior use as an equestrian event arena. The 60acre property was the subject of a city–led master planning effort in 2013 which established the long-term plan for the property, now called Rivendale Park and Open Space. Last fall, the city cleared the unsafe, aging, red-tagged structures on the property, addressing both safety issues and returning the site to a more natural state, where These improvements are consistent with the approved Master Plan for Rivendale Park and Open Space. In addition to the parking lot and new loop trail, the plan includes improvements, construction of a cultural/educational use area, an amphitheater and restrooms. No, not the leaves changing colors, the warm rebirth of spring or the first flakes of snow signaling a white Christmas. It’s time, once again, for American politicians to stop pretending like they are respectful (or respectable) human beings and do what keeps good candidates from running, giving America a black eye in the view of the rest of the world. I’m speaking, of course, of the moment when the first low-blows are thrown in a political race (which is just a matter of time, at any level in American politics). Any election cycle these days is destined to fill our airwaves and televisions with muckraking and name-calling, but the presidential race is always the worst, by far. And in this current election cycle, it’s the candidates on the “same team” who are currently tearing each other apart, which makes it that much worse. are made long before a single vote is cast in that country, but at least they have the decency to make it seem amicable. If you’ve ever lived in another country outside of the U.S., you already know that this is par for the course in the American media. The motto of our media may be “if it bleeds, it leads,” but most other countries don’t subscribe to that same level of low-brow entertainment-news. I remember Senator McCain making the claim early in his presidential run that he would run a “clean” campaign, devoid of low blows or mud-slinging, and I was quite proud of him and had high hopes. So, as soon as his campaign launched the first salvo of mud, I lost all faith in him – and most faith in our process. Have you ever had two mutual friends who were in a relationship, break up and force you to choose one or the other because they just couldn’t stand the sight of their former flame anymore? Aside from Trump and Carson, each of the major candidates serve in some form of public office where they will have to face each other once again when this race is over. And by the current tone of this race, it doesn’t seem any of them are adult enough to let bygones be bygones. For a country that prides herself on being the leader of the free world, we sure don’t set a good example. The fact that no candidate can emerge unscathed from a presidential election in the United States is a shame on all of us, and we should expect more from our leaders and journalists who cover them. While we don’t want a state-run media (which we seem to be just a few shades away from currently), we also don’t want a TMZ-style gossip hound trying to smear every indecent act of the future leader of our country on the front pages for the world to see. It’s not surprising, in my opinion, that the largest number of claims of “low blows” seem to have been coming from the Democratic race up to this point. We have the FBI suspect accusing the Nazi-esque socialist and friend of Al Sharpton (I’m not sure which is a bigger insult) of unfair blows to her credibility (you can’t make this stuff up), while the latter is accusing Monica Lewinsky’s boyfriend’s wife of not being liberal enough. So every time you hear someone complain that we just don’t have any good candidates, I’d like you to think hard about (and even remind them of) the reason that we don’t. The best, brightest and most accomplished in our society spend their lives working hard, maintaining their reputations and possibly having families. But the GOP candidates are doing their best to even the playing field of low blows, and if they keep up the current rate, this race may hit the bottom of the barrel in record time. And if the candidates’ infighting didn’t seem to be enough, the mainstream media has given up any veiled attempt to pretend they haven’t decided who they want in office. But, as we’re all human, if you stick enough private investigators and PR spin doctors to go through any one of our entire lives with a microscope, they are bound to find (or create) something that could make any of us look like a despicable person, when spun the right way from the right “journalist.” Nobody wants to put his or her history or family through that, but unfortunately, that has become the status quo of our election cycles. We have one publication claiming Trump went back on his pledge by suggesting he may run as a third party independent (even though he was the only candidate who wouldn’t agree to that during the first Fox News debate). Then another is claiming Dr. Ben Carson’s run is a scam to get free secret service (huh?) and rent out his donor mailing list. Either way, we’ve shown the world yet again, just how low we can go. However, to be a candidate on the Republican ticket it is all but required that one affirms their faith in Christianity and swears to uphold those values. So, if that faith and value system were true, maybe at least one candidate would remember one of the most important lessons taught in the Bible: “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.” For a frame of reference here to show how the rest of the world handles elections, candidates in what many consider the most corrupt country, in terms of politics (China), are not allowed to discuss other candidates, and must focus solely on which of their own characteristics would make them a good choice for political office. Sure, it is an important detail that most political decisions Their Words Should Hang Them By Sylvia Turner T his week I’m going to feel guilty again going after Republican candidates, but it’s just too tempting. They’re such low-hanging fruit, so I can’t resist. Donald’s “trumpertantrums” continue. He talked to Thomas Roberts on MSNBC and a few others on the other reliable news stations. Here are a few of today’s intelligent snippets from Trump. The first one is in reference to ISIS. “We’re gonna knock them out so strong.” Wow – hide that from his sixth grade English teacher. “We’re gonna make our military absolutely strong and powerful again. It’s the cheapest thing we can do.” All I can say is “How?” and “Huh?!” “We’re going to build the wall, folks. It’s simple. I know how to build.” That’s the one thing I was hoping to get in the Oval Office – a construction guy. Let’s move on to Sen. Ted Cruz. He refuses to sever the lovefest he has with farrrrr-right religious leader Mike Bickle, who endorsed Cruz. Kansas-based Bickle said that God sent Hitler to hunt Jews, calling the Nazi leader the “most famous hunter in recent history” and talked about the concentration camps awaiting Jews before they find Jesus. You have to know his organization is International House of Prayer (with a side of syrup?). And there’s always Cruz’s endorsement by Colorado pastor Kevin Swanson, who says homosexuality should be punished by death and that if his son was gay and invited him to the wedding, he would smear himself in cow manure and sit at the church entrance in sackcloth and ashes. And you thought Jeremiah Wright was bad?! Poor old Jeb Bush. He has two problems: his name (Bush) and his name (Jeb). There’s not much more to say, except that he never stood a chance. “I continue to believe Mr. Trump will not be president,” Obama said at a news conference in California after a meeting with Southeast Asian leaders. “And the reason is that I have a lot of faith in the American people. Being president is a serious job. It’s not hosting a talk show, or a reality show.” I’m glad President Obama has faith in the American people. Every time I see Trump’s poll numbers I begin to lose mine (faith in the American people, that is). I didn’t weigh in on the Supreme Court Justice replacement, mostly because it’s already a tired subject. Ryan Grim at The Huffington Post had the best idea yet, though. President Barack Obama should nominate Barack Obama for the job. After all, wasn’t he a constitutional law professor? Republicans would take the bait, just to vote against him, so they would at least let the process go forward. It would be funny, especially, because if the dominoes all fall forward, there’s a chance Joe Biden could end up in the presidency position, briefly anyway. Clever idea. Maybe somebody needs to send the candidates back to Bible study the next time the claws come out. I’ve always found it puzzling that our city, which is such a stickler for esthetics, allows the dancing fools to distract our driving. Someone told me the company has to pay a fee to the city for the human ads, so now it all makes perfect sense. Our city government needs the money to help fund the Laemmle theater project and they’re willing to sacrifice their esthetic souls to do it – yeah, that’s it! Just Say It! If you have watched the debates lately, you’ve heard the name calling, the underhanded innuendos, almost hatred pouring out. It does seem petty and childish at times, but at least you know where the candidates are coming from when they don’t hide their feelings. I’m sure you’ve seen the rather uncomfortable and emotional disagreements on Fox News, CNN (sure as heck not CNBC – they don’t have opposing guests on the network no one watches). They involve pundits from each side of the political spectrum, but at least we know where they stand, because it’s voiced out loud. Have you ever seen video clips of debates in the British Parliament? Oh, my goodness, they go at each other with all kinds of insults in their rebuttals; it’s a no holds barred debating free-for-all. While our state and federal legislatures are much calmer, you still get a good idea how the members feel about each other and their stance on matters. 9 The Supreme Court is dangerously out of balance; I will recommend to my colleagues that we should not confirm any Bush nominee to the Supreme Court except in extraordinary circumstances. They must prove by actions, not words, that they are in the mainstream, rather than we have to approve that they are not.” This was when Bush had seven more months to go in his term, compared to what Obama has left in his. Charlie, if I were you I wouldn’t waste anymore keyboard punches on this, because it ain’t happening until next year, when the Republicans have all the power, including the presidency. Most of the members debate as if there is a big elephant in the room they’re afraid of waking up. Sure, they debate, but it seems guarded to me. It’s obvious that four members dislike the fifth, because he doesn’t hesitate to let his opinion fly all over the place and takes up a lot of meeting time (I’m sure there is more to it than that, but that’s all we see and hear). The only time I see true emotions flow is when the mayor and the disliked councilman get into it, and that’s how it should be with all of the members. On many matters, it seems as though most of the council people already know how they’re going to vote because they know how the shunned member is going to vote, but they won’t look the guy in the eyes and debate him. I’m not calling for British type debating, but I’d like to see the other three get down to righteous debating. Let us know why you have a problem with the gentleman and disagree with his stance. Through the years, there have been a number of owners, but the current owner is CEMEX – a Mexican mining company. the application, although the status of the application is still considered active. How large is the mine? Well, if you have ever driven the 610 Freeway passing through Irwindale, it pales in comparison to the proposed CEMEX mega-mine, which would be the largest aggregate mine in the country. Existing law requires the publication of a notice of application to appropriate water and requires protest to be filed within a certain period of time after publication of a notice of application. According to the Safe Action for the Environment, Inc. (SAFE) the scale of the mining would be nearly 20 times larger than what is currently mined in Soledad Canyon today, and it will last for 20 years. The daily operation of the mine would result in 18-wheelers and gravel trucks entering and departing from the mine every 2 minutes, which would add 1,200 trucks to our local roads daily. The dust created by the mine would greatly harm our air quality and would exceed acceptably safe levels by nearly 200%. AB 1986 would amend the water code to require the publication of new notice of application if the SWRCB has not rendered a final determination on an application within 20 years from its original filing date. The new notice would re-open the protest period and any other administrative processes, as if it were being undertaken for the first time. Last August, under pressure from Rep. Steve Knight (R-Palmdale) and California’s two U.S. Senators, the BLM announced it had canceled CEMEX’s Soledad Canyon mining contracts. However, CEMEX has appealed that decision and it could take as long as two years to get a final adjudication. First, California has been in a serious four-year drought and is currently pulling massive amounts of water from the Santa Clara River. The Santa Clara River is the last natural river in Southern California and its preservation positively affects communities from Agua Dulce to Ventura. Fortunately, Congressman Knight has stayed aggressive and recently introduced a bill with bi-partisan support that would withdraw the mineral rights in Soledad Canyon, effectively preventing CEMEX or any other company from mining there in the future. I applaud these efforts. Additionally, there are efforts to expand the new San Gabriel Mountains National Monument farther into the Santa Clarita Valley and the mega mine would affect that federal government decision. Back in 1991, CEMEX’s predecessorin-interest (Transit Mix Concrete) filed an application with the California State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) for a water appropriation permit. The application requested 322 acre-feet of water per year from the Santa Clara River for use related to mining and industrial operations. Under current law, the administrative process allows for a protest period and the SWRCB is required to hold a hearing as long as a protest remains unresolved or there is a disputed material fact. I Will Not be Voting for the Carpetbagger Dear Local Democrats: he most important local issue affecting our community is actually a federal government decision that allows mega-mining in Soledad Canyon. Although a federal issue, there is a role for the state to play in the permitting process of the mega-mine. That’s where my proposed legislation, Assembly Bill 1986, comes into play. Feb 19 - Feb 25, 2016 During the 25-year application process, a significant number of issues have arisen. Finally, in 1990, the city of Santa Clarita had a population of 132,700 and today it’s more than 209,000. According to the Southern California Association of Government, by 2030 our valley should be around 550,000 residents. Lou Vince has been fighting for progressive values here in the 25th for years. Lou ran for L.A. Sheriff in 2014 on a progressive platform, and over the last year, Lou has been fighting as our strong, local, progressive candidate for Congress. Lou has been phone banking and door knocking for a year. Lou has attended countless Democratic meetings and pounded the pavement for a year. Lou has earned the endorsements and support of every Democratic Club in the 25th – some unanimously. He’s earned the endorsement of our state’s California Democratic Party with the vote of over 80 percent of our Democratic delegates. Lou has the endorsements of many prominent Democrats, both locally, and state wide. But most importantly, Lou has earned the support and confidence of local residents in the 25th. Lou is a Marine, an LAPD lieutenant with 21 years of service, a former sheriff, a local town council member, and a wonderful family man and father of four great kids. Lou has lived in the 25th for over a decade, knows our issues, and cares deeply about our/his community. Why, then, would the Washington elites parachute in a Johnny Come Lately, unknown, carpetbagger into our district to jeopardize the Lou Vince campaign? Here’s why: Remember when the DCCC political elite in Washington did not support Lee Rogers for Congress? The DCCC didn’t support Lee in 2012 when he raised good money, and they didn’t support Lee in 2014 when he raised nearly $400,000. Therefore, it’s logical to conclude that the DCCC supports issues, not as they contend, “fundraising ability.” So why did the DCCC abandon the 25th in those last two elections and not support Lee Rogers? It is clear to me that it’s because the DCCC opposes progressive politics. So let’s be honest with each other here in the 25th. When the DCCC comes out of nowhere and parachutes in a wealthy, unknown, inexperienced lawyer from outside of our district, the message is clear. The DCCC is not concerned about Lou Vince’s fundraising ability; they are opposed to Lou’s progressive politics. The second important question is whether the DCCC is concerned about Lou Vince losing the general elections in November. Absolutely not. We all know 2016 is the year Democrats can defeat the Republicans and turn the 25th Blue. Democrats will have record turn outs in June and November. The DCCC has not parachuted in a carpetbagger because they fear Republicans; they have forced a carpetbagger on us because they fear Lou Vince’s progressive politics. Finally, why this particular out of towner? Well, to put it bluntly, he’s rich, with rich friends outside of our district. Now, there is nothing wrong with being rich, but those rich, out of district friends have funded this out of town campaign. Yes, he has raised a lot of out of town money all at once, but his well in the district is dry. He has little support from local Dems. Lou Vince has raised campaign funds from over 600 local contributors. That is a strong grass roots campaign. The carpetbagger has come in with bags of outside money, rented a place in Valencia, and proceeded to try to make us think he cares about our local issues and concerns. Absurd! We need to nip this issue in the bud. It goes against our Democratic values in the 25th to parachute an unknown, out of town candidate into our district to undermine the already existing, strong, year long, grass roots Democratic campaign of Lou Vince for Congress. A carpetbagging campaign itself is an affront to Democrats in the 25th. Add to that the big money bags thrown on us from outside the district, and the urgency becomes clear. Make no mistake about it; this is a slap in the face of Democrats in the 25th. Let’s not find out the dark truth in July when it’s too late. Let’s not unnecessarily sacrifice a real and local progressive. An honest to goodness, home grown, 25th district Democrat, Lou Vince. Please write to the DCCC and ask them to withdraw their candidate from our district and put their support behind Lou Vince for Congress. Although I believe this project should never have been permitted, the facts, more than ever, reveal that this massive project would be an unmitigated disaster for the Santa Clarita Valley. If he has his way, he’ll see yet another change: Himself on the City Council. Ferdman, 73, has lived in Canyon Country since 1965 and can tell story after story about how the area has grown and changed (does anybody else remember the agricultural airport?) and not always for the better, in his opinion. He also spent his career working in the aerospace industry and thrived, despite industry changes. “I watched the industry get digitized,” he said. “More mechanical gave way to more electronic.” For example, one of his first projects upon joining Litton Guidance and Control (a division of the defunct Litton Industries) in 1961 was to build an electromechanical navigator unit for a fighter jet. It was 18 by 18 inches, weighed 50 pounds and cost $50,000. “Now, you can buy a chip for $50” and get the same thing on a drone, he said. Over time, Ferdman worked for Litton and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory on navigational equipment for the F-4 Phantom, the F-104 Starfighter, the F-14 Tomcat, the F-22 Raptor, the A-6 Intruder, the P-3 Orion, the B-52 Stratofortress and the EF111A Raven. Most of his work came during the Cold War, so the systems he and his department developed had to work in nuclear, bacteriological and chemical environments, in case the Soviets dropped any of those types of weapons on the U.S. Sometimes, his work was classified “secret” or “top secret,” meaning he was only told the parts he needed to be told to complete the system(s) on which he worked. Some might romanticize working in such environments. Others might think conspiratorially that someone would sell secrets to the Soviets. For Ferdman, it simply went with the job – even though the government canceled all of the top-secret projects on which he worked. “You have to do it,” he said. “They (government) will give you information about what they want you to produce. You assume the specifications are correct. We’re experts in a particular area, and we build that area. We were told to build a certain component, and we did that. People were pretty good at keeping their mouth shut.” However, there was the time the FBI came calling, which Ferdman said happens when you’re assigned to something “top secret.” But this unnerved the neighbors. “My neighbors were in a panic. ‘Al, the FBI is here. What’s going on?’ I said, ‘Don’t worry.’” Ferdman believes that this type of government work, along with his 16 years of service to the Canyon Country Advisory Committee that includes 14 years as chairperson, has prepared him to serve on the City Council. He said this is the only office he aspires to and will only serve two terms because “like my friend George Washington said, you serve two terms and then you go home.” Worried About IRS Tax Problems? By Ray Bulaon, Attorney At Law I RS problems have a way of ruining all aspects of your life. They can take a toll on you financially, emotionally and physically. When you owe the IRS, you’re always wondering if today might be the day when the IRS shows up at work, your home or your business, or if today might be the day the IRS decides to levy your bank account or garnish your paycheck. This is a heavy load to bear every day! The only way to solve your IRS problems is to face them head-on and to have a plan of action. And that’s exactly what people lack — a plan. Unfortunately, instead of taking action, people bury their heads in the sand, pretending that their IRS problems don’t exist. This is the wrong approach and your tax problems will only continue to get worse. Unfortunately, there are a lot of unscrupulous companies out there who are more interested in taking your hard-earned dollars instead of offering you the solution that you need. Without knowing anything about your situation, they tell you that you can settle your IRS debt “for pennies on the dollar.” While the IRS has such a program that allows forgiveness of tax debt, it is not for everyone. The IRS uses a specific formula to determine the least amount it will accept based on your income and assets. Space here doesn’t allow me to elaborate and explain the common options that people have when they have IRS debt that they cannot afford to pay back. But if you call my Valencia Office at 866-477-7772 for more information, we will give you a FREE CONFIDENTIAL CONSULTATION so we can thoroughly review your case and give you our best recommendation. Visit www.familyfinancelawyer.com There are three points to Ferdman’s platform, he said. He wants to ease traffic (“No one can say it’s getting better,” he said), eliminate what he calls “backroom deals” (“The people’s business should be done in public”) and increase public safety. He’s calling for a second sheriff ’s station on the other side of the city, more paramedics and a decrease in the murder rate, which he attributes to increased domestic violence. “He’s the type of person we need,” realtor Steve Petzold said. “He takes the time to explore the issues … just like (Councilmember) TimBen (Boydston) does. He stays in touch with the community.” This will be Ferdman’s second attempt to be elected. He lost in 2014 to Dante Acosta by 104 votes. “I needed 104 more friends,” he said. This time, he’s running for seats currently held by Boydston and Mayor Bob Kellar. The top two vote-getters win. The possibility exists that he will defeat Boydston, who he supports and who spoke at Ferdman’s Jan. 21 kickoff event. “He’s honest, transparent, and he is very detailoriented,” Boydston said. “Alan is smart and hardworking.” “I’ve got the time,” the retired Ferdman said, “and I’ve certainly got the passion to serve the community and make sure this community stays great for generations to come.” Getting in Shape for the Summer Months by Sarah Farnell T he holidays are long over, and the same thing probably goes for your overall health and fitness. With summer just around the corner, it’s about time to stop numbing the pain of loneliness and despair with pure intestinal garbage and start working towards that bikini body. If you’re having trouble searching for the last drop of motivation in your lethargic existence, here are some tips and ideas for how to get up and moving. 1. Carry out an armed robbery on foot Let me tell ya, nothing gets my heart beating faster than an old-fashioned police chase. After you whip out your weapon, be sure to get your resting heart rate. This will allow you to measure how your physical fitness improves over time. When you rip the bags of cash from the hands of that scared, elderly bank teller, get in as many reps as you can. Anything over $5,000 should really work your triceps as you’re running. When the police finally catch up to you, take this time to do some trunk lifts as your hands are clasped behind your head. Workout complete! 2. Run for Congress I know, I know – you’re looking for a workout, not a bailout, but running for Congress is a great way to get in shape. Steve Knight might make it look like a breeze, but it isn’t as easy as it looks. Sometimes you have stand for long periods of time. Other times, your hand cramps from shredding the bills that you refuse to pass. Either way, you will get those muscles moving from the moment you flex your biceps and take that oath of office. 3. Buy a treadmill, ignore the treadmill, move the treadmill out of the garage For this exercise, buying the bulkiest, most expensive piece of workout equipment is key. You want it to be large enough for you to notice on a daily basis, yet subtle enough for you to avoid it for months on end. After it collects enough dust and causes a few asthma attacks, it’s time to spend a Saturday arguing with a family member as you figure out a way to dump it on the sidewalk. Frustration burns a lot of calories, so make sure to drink lots of water. 4. Tell your friends about your exercise routine When ladies get together with friends and talk about working out, things get wild. Hand gestures flail, spit flies, heads roll. For the best workout, just make up extreme exercise routines and lie about them to your pals. Make sure to describe them in a big way, using gestures that will leave your posse exhausted just watching you. 5. Cry Weeping is a fun little activity that burns a few calories, and you can do it anywhere. Personally, I cry at the movies, school, gas station bathrooms, and even as I am writing this. I am in the best shape of my life, thanks to crying. As long as you don’t let anyone see you, this workout is bound to help you drop some lbs. **Warning: THIS IS A SATIRE.The Views and Opinions expressed in this column are those of the writer, not necessarily those of Valley Publications/Santa Clarita Gazette. Mootnick and the GCC were instrumental in identifying and naming a distinct gibbon species – the eastern hoolock gibbon. The GCC is the only location in the western hemisphere with eastern hoolock families in residence, and offers visitors the only opportunity in the world to hear five species of gibbons sing their songs together. Medina, an endangered male javan gibbon, sings his territorial songs several times each day at the Gibbon Conservation Center. The other gibbons join the chorus, sharing their own unique songs. The Gibbon Center provides a safe haven for rare gibbon species as a complement to protecting them in the wild. Their conservation efforts include establishing secure captive gene pools in case attempts to preserve species or subspecies in the wild fail. Working in cooperation with reputable zoos around the world, the GCC works to improve the overall standard of care for captive gibbons. The GCC supports organizations in the gibbon home countries that focus on gibbon conservation. The Gibbon Conservation Center is located at 19100 Esguerra Rd. in Saugus. Always willing to help, Carmen can be found in the GCC kitchen on Tuesdays, steaming vegetables to the “al dente” state that gibbons prefer. The temperature may be 100 degrees outside, or 50 degrees and windy, but in Carmen’s kitchen it feels like 120 degrees, summer and winter. Once a week’s worth of veggies are cooked, Carmen loads the food buckets and completes several feeding cycles, hauling favorite foods to the gibbon families who anxiously await her visits. A retired educator, Carmen is so much more than the cooking volunteer to the GCC. She shares the highs and lows of gibbon care with the staff and greets everyone with a warm smile. The Canyon Country businessman buys excess inventory in bulk and displays them in his 2,400-square-foot store on Camp Plenty Road. “I needed a location with retail exposure, and square footage that fell into our budget,” said Acquaviva, who lives in Canyon View Estates nearby. “Lucky for me, our location is only about a mile from my residence and kids’ schools!” Acquaviva is a full-time father of two children and has lived in the Santa Clarita Valley for 45 years. The merchandise at Action Liquidations varies as the store owner acquires overages, always aimed at undercutting retail prices. “We offer a huge discount on diapers – around 40-50 percent off retail,” he said, “and great values on housewares, lawn and garden, organic goods, and great deals on household and commercial cleaning supplies.” Acquaviva obtains truckloads of merchandise from major retailers and distributors, he said. While it’s never easy, the difficulties one will encounter while being incarcerated can vary pretty widely, depending on the crime and the type of facility where the individual was sent. For example, a person who spends time in a city jail for missed child support payments will likely have an easier time than someone who’s sent to a larger state prison or jail. The reasoning behind that is because the person in city jail will typically be surrounded by others who have been convicted of committing misdemeanors and relatively minor felonies. The individual in a large county jail or state prison, though, may share their surroundings with a variety of much more dangerous, and often violent, criminals. Unfortunately for many, the difficulties associated with having spent time in custody aren’t necessarily over once a person is released – particularly when searching for employment. When applying for a job, pretty much every employer is going to want to know if the applicant has a prior criminal record, and those who do report extreme difficulty in obtaining employment after incarceration. Luckily, for those who were sent to the smaller jail instead of state prison, there is hope in the form of California Penal Code 1203.4 PC: California’s Expungement Law. Expungement is something that an individual can apply for that will require the court to seal the person’s criminal records, thereby making it impossible for employers to use that prior criminal conviction against the applicant, as well as making it illegal for them to even bring it up. To be eligible for expungement, a person must meet three basic criteria: • The individual must have completed his/her probation successfully (including the payment of any fines and/or court fees, restitution, counseling and/or community service) • The convicted party must not be currently charged with another criminal offense, on probation for another criminal offense, or currently serving time for another criminal offense, and • The individual cannot have been sentenced to serve time in state prison for the offense or for a parole violation regarding their offense Additionally, certain offenses are ineligible for expungement. Those offenses are: 286 PC: sodomy with a child; PC 288: lewd acts with a child; PC 288a (c): oral copulation with a child; and PC 264.5(d): statutory rape. An attorney can assist with the expungement process, and it includes filling out the necessary paperwork, waiting for the court to process it, and then attending an expungement hearing. If an expungement is granted, it can be very beneficial in the search for employment, obtaining a state professional license, and even help avoid certain consequences involved with immigration. If you think that you or someone you know may be eligible for expungement, always, always be sure to speak with a qualified attorney first. Santa Clarita Valley Young Democrats Endorse Lou Vince for Congress T he only young democrats club in the 25th Congressional District have unanimously endorsed candidate Lou Vince. “Lou Vince is the clear choice for Congress,” said Andrew Taban, president of the Santa Clarita Valley Young Democrats. “He is the only candidate in this race who knows the residents and what our needs are. Unlike his opponent, he is from our community, knows us and our issues and can win in November. Our community is going to send our representative to Washington, not the other way around. I am proud to support Lou and glad that our club has chosen to endorse him. Lou is the best choice for young people and I urge all Democrats to unite behind the clear community candidate.” A California native, the candidate lives in Agua Dulce with his wife, Stacey and four children, two of whom the couple fostered and adopted. Vince is a police lieutenant, having served in the LAPD since 1995. He is also a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves. “It’s so exciting to earn the support of such dedicated Democrats and the leaders of the future,” Vince said. “When it comes to the issues that matter most to young voters, I stand with them to fight for their concerns. Whether it’s making college affordable or combating climate change, I want to make sure America’s youth have the tools they need to succeed and achieve the American Dream. I want to thank Andrew for his kind words and I am so glad to have his confidence. I look forward to leading our party as its nominee in November, because I am the only candidate who can defeat Steve Knight and be the representative that the 25th District deserves.” I f you are looking for a reason to laugh this month, there are still two weeks of performances left in Canyon Theatre’s latest stage production. “Bullshot Crummond” is a parody of a lowbudget 1930s detective film. The villain is “Otto Von Brunn,” who crashes his plane in the English countryside with evil mistress “Lenya.” They kidnap “Professor Fenton,” who has discovered a formula for making synthetic diamonds. The comical hero is “Bullshot Crummond,” who is called to the rescue by the professor’s daughter, “Rosemary.” Upcoming performances include: Saturday, February 20 and 27 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, February 21 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $17 for adults and $15 for seniors and kids under 18. The CTG stage is doing double duty, as “Peter Pan: The Musical” is in its final weeks also. Using J.M. Barrie’s original story, this musical includes 13 songs to accompany the antics of “Peter,” “Wendy Darling,” “Captain Hook” and the rest. Remaining performances are: Friday, Feb. 19 and 26 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 20 and 27 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $19 for adults and $17 for seniors and kids under 18. The next two shows – opening in March – are currently in production. “Happy Days: A New Musical” brings the gang from Arnold’s to life beginning March 25, 2016. Audiences will see “Fonzie,” and “Pinky Tuscadero” in a show filled with singing and dancing along with its familiar 1950s characters and storyline. Opening night features a free wine and champagne reception at 7 p.m., and the show closes on April 30, 2016. Tickets are $19 for adults and $17 for seniors and kids under 18. “CSI: Wonderland” is the other show opening March 25. It is a mystical adventure from a realm where the “Queen of Hearts” reigns. Call Santa Clarita Gazette & Free Classifieds at 298-5333 to place your FREE classified ad today! 24 SANTA CLARITA GAZETTE & FREE CLASSIFIEDS Vista Canyon Update R ightly so, the JSB Development website proudly trumpets its Vista Canyon development, calling it an “environmentally sensitive and sustainable plan (that) incorporates a highly walkable and transit-oriented focus.” It goes on to mention other positive features: “(d)esirable living, working, shopping and recreation areas are located within close proximity to one another and are connected by miles of multi-use trails.” Perhaps surprisingly, what’s missing from the description is any mention of the water recycling plant that will, according to JSB president Jim Backer, create more water than what the entire community will need. What’s more, the plant, when finished, will become the City of Santa Clarita’s property. “We don’t know of any being built and then turned over to the city,” Backer said, adding there aren’t 50 such plants being built in the county. The plant will be the first structure to go up, but bureaucratic delays in securing the necessary permits from entities including the Regional Water Quality Control Board have delayed things by a month or two, Backer said. “Questions need to be answered,” he said. “It’s all part of the process. It’s standard operating procedure. We hope there is a timeframe.” Feb 19 - Feb 25, 2016 By Lee Barnathan been on to the next step, holding public hearings. But these delays have not pushed the entire project off its scheduled 2017 opening. Santa Clarita Mayor Bob Kellar said he did not remember the details of the project and didn’t want to comment on it, but he said, “Anything that Jim Backer tells you, you can take to the bank. Jim Backer is a great man in our community, and he does great work.” Backer said the plant grew out of a desire to build a sustainable community. The idea for it came from a woman (who he declined to name) he worked with four years ago who was very much pro-environment. “Her passion for that was something that was really important,” Backer said. “We took her seriously.” Similar plants have been built in Arizona, so Backer and his people did their research. One difference between those plants and the Vista Canyon one: the Arizona plants were built out of town and away from population areas, which isn’t possible here. However, Backer said, the Vista Canyon plant will be on a far end of the project. According to the Land Use Plan on the JSB website, it will abut the Santa Clara River to the south, a connector road to the north, and open space to the east and west. At this point, he added, he would have liked to have secured the permits and Teaming Up Web Designer and Copywriter By Warren Schultz A nyone who wants to succeed in business today needs a website. But what do you need? What will it look like? What features are needed? How many pages should it be? The questions are nearly endless, and if you try to do everything yourself, you’ll likely fail. You might start by making a common mistake and use a free website. Don’t do this, because you’re limited in what you can do, and you don’t own what’s on the site. The best way to go about it is to hire professionals who know their way around a website. You need two: a web designer and a copywriter. First, the web designer. This person can help you navigate your way through building the site. A web designer knows there is an order to creating, building and maintaining a website. A web designer knows you need a domain name, a hosting company and a platform, and he/she will know the best ways to get these needs met for the most reasonable cost. Next, a web designer can help you create the look you want for your site. There are many templates out there from which to choose, but a web designer also can take your ideas and turn them into real web pages. Got a color scheme or certain graphic elements you want? Do you want a blog to accompany your site? Do you want pictures or video? Where will you put the copy, the written words? A web designer can make everything happen. Once you have ideas, it’s time to put them into words. This is where the copywriter comes in. A good copywriter meets with you to get to know you and your company – its message, mission statement, and the products and services you’re offering. What do you want to say on each page? What tone do you want to use? A copywriter creates the content. Make sure you hire a copywriter who knows how to use Search Engine Optimization (SEO). This is the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine’s unpaid results. A copywriter uses keywords (which are the words search engines are looking for) and seamlessly inserts them into the copy for the search engines to find. Ideally, your site will come up first when someone types the keywords into the search engine. Here is where a web designer again comes into play. While the copywriter uses keywords as part of a page’s SEO, the web designer uses computer code to tell the search engines what your keywords are. A web designer also submits your website to the search engines so they know your site exists – and he/she does it every time you make a change to your site. And you will have to make changes to your site, because one of the factors search engines use to rank pages is how fresh the content is. You need new graphic elements (again, the web designer can place them) and/or new words (which the copywriter can provide). Finally, there is one more advantage to using a web designer. He or she can run programs in which you see how high your pages are ranked on the search engines. The goal is to be number one, so if you aren’t in the top 10 (meaning you’re not on the search engine’s first page, decreasing the likelihood anyone’s going to find you), a web designer can make suggestions. Maybe you need new graphic elements. Maybe you need to try different keywords, at which time the copywriter comes back into play and helps you find those keywords that will lead you to a number one ranking. To summarize: You need a web designer for: • the domain name, hosting company, platform • the overall look of your website, including any future changes or additional pages • search engine optimization (the programming aspect) • sending your websites to the various search engines • running programs to see how your websites are registering on search engines You need a copywriter for: • the content (words) for each page that will have content on it, including future changes • search engine optimization (the keyword aspect) For more information, call Warren at (818) 281-7628 or visit www.TAPSolutions.net. Earth movers have rolled in. Dirt is getting graded. Vista Canyon has been 10 years in the making, but now the visual changes enable passersby to follow the construction. Anyone who thought the Vista Canyon development was just a figment of someone’s imagination has probably gained consciousness by now. There have been months of activity at the corner of Sand Canyon and Lost Canyon and across the riverbed up to Soledad Canyon Road. “In 2016 it should be fairly flat until the latter half of the year. Then we hope by September to have some construction, things coming out of the ground,” Backer explained. “Right now our focus has been on land development and getting the land in a condition where you can build something on it.” “It’s a fairly contained site,” said Jim Backer, president of JSB Development, the company responsible for the project. “Now there are 40-50 pieces of equipment on the site. After next month or so the equipment will go away. By that time we should be doing some of the finish work. We’re going to start the water installation at the west end on Lost Canyon, then pave that as soon as possible so it’s open to the Colony (townhomes) residents.” In 2017, said the developer, roads that are graded will become paved, and he expects some occupancy to begin next year. Recent storms have caused some locals to question the ability of crews to continue working. “The rain has been good for us – it softens up our dirt,” Backer said. “We’re basically on schedule. Our goal was to get the soil cement river embankment done by last year and we finished December 31. Most of our focus has been on the west side and we just started some grading on the east side.” “It’ll start to look like a real community, a real neighborhood,” Backer said. “We have some apartment units we’re working on, that we just submitted to the city. We’re going to sell some of the apartment land, so we’re talking to some home builders. We should have a lot of activity this year on the project.” It is too early to predict which retailers will lay claim to the spaces available. Backer and his associates have reached out to some possible tenants, but only preliminary gestures. Born in Clinton, Mass. on July 26, 1961 to John and Ruth Luksha, Bill was the youngest of four boys, following John, Lawrence, and Daniel. As a loving father, Bill leaves behind two children who meant the world to him, his daughter, Janna, and his son, Ben. Upon graduation from Clinton High School, Bill joined the United States Air Force in 1980. Eventually reaching the rank of sergeant, Bill was honorably discharged in 1984. After a set of odd jobs here and there, Bill started working on his professional career in water treatment. Recognizing his exceptional character, Woodard and Curran hired Bill, where he loyally continued his employment and climbed the ranks to serve them as senior vice president. Bill’s love for sports, especially hockey, would not only follow him throughout his lifetime and serve him well as a healthy, stress-relieving hobby, but also became a legacy that he would pass on to his daughter, Janna. Continually generating witty jokes, Bill’s impeccable sense of humor and sarcasm constantly kept a smile on the faces of the people around him. Although Bill’s steadfast independence led to a selfsufficient lifestyle, he was dearly loved by his friends and family, who cherished his unique personality and disposition.
