A: In his 2016 Lenten message, Pope Francis called the faithful to place special emphasis on the spiritual and corporal works of mercy this Lent, taking into account the current Jubilee Year of Mercy. “God’s mercy transforms human hearts; it enables us, through the experience of a faithful love, to become merciful in turn,” the pope wrote in the short document, released Jan. 26 by the Vatican. The spiritual and corporal works of mercy, the pontiff said, “remind us that faith finds expression in concrete everyday actions meant to help our neighbors in body and spirit: by feeding, visiting, comforting and instructing them.” Mercy is the virtue that influences one’s will to have compassion for, and, if possible, to alleviate another’s misfortune. It is customary to list works of mercy as corporal works and spiritual works. The Corporal Works of Mercy are these kind acts by which we help our neighbors with their material and physical needs. ✠✠ feed the hungry ✠✠ give drink to the thirsty ✠✠ clothe the naked ✠✠ shelter the homeless ✠✠ visit the sick ✠✠ visit the imprisoned ✠✠ bury the dead The Spiritual Works of Mercy are acts of compassion, as listed below, by which we help our neighbors with their emotional and spiritual needs. ✠✠ counsel the doubtful ✠✠ instruct the ignorant ✠✠ admonish sinners ✠✠ comfort the afflicted ✠✠ forgive offenses ✠✠ bear wrongs patiently ✠✠ pray for the living and the dead. Particularly during the Year of Mercy, Pope Francis tells us, Catholics are called to recognize their own need for God’s mercy, the greatness of God’s love seen in the death and resurrection of Christ and the obligation to assist others by communicating God’s love and mercy through words and deeds. “In the corporal works of mercy we touch the flesh of Christ in our brothers and sisters who need to be fed, clothed, sheltered, visited,” he wrote. “ In the spiritual works of mercy—counsel, instruction, forgiveness, admonishment and prayer—we touch more directly our own sinfulness.” In the following weeks, the Deacon Desk will look at the different Acts of Mercy in more detail, hoping to provide a better understanding of what we are called to do – not just during this special Jubilee Year but at all times. HEALING OF THE LEPER Romans 6:12-23 Freedom from Sin; Life in God B rothers and Sisters: Do not let sin exercise dominion in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their passions. No longer present your members to sin as instruments of wickedness, but present yourselves to God as those who has been brought from death to life, and present your members to God as instruments of righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace. What then? Should we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God that you, having once been slaves of sin, have become obedient from the heart to the form of teaching to which you were entrusted, and that you, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. I am speaking in human terms because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to greater and greater iniquity, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness for sanctification. When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. So what advantage did you then get from the things of which you now are ashamed? The end of those things is death. But now that you have been freed from sin and enslaved to God, the advantage you get is sanctification. The end is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Praise be to God always! Mark 1:35-43 Jesus Leaves Capernaum/The Cleansing of a Leper T he Evangelist writes: In the morning, while it was still very dark, Jesus got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed. And Simon and his companions hunted for him. When they found him, they said to him, “Everyone is searching for you.” He answered, “Let us go on to the neighboring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for that is what I came out to do.” And he went throughout Galilee, proclaiming the message in their synagogues and casting out demons. A leper came to him begging him, and kneeling he said to him, “If you choose, you can make me clean.” Moved with pity, Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, and said to him, “I do choose. Be made clean!” Immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean. After sternly warning him, he sent him away at once. This is the truth. Peace be with you. Monday 2/15 - 1Thes 3:6-13 & Mt 6:22-24 Tuesday 2/16 - Gal 2:11-17 & Mt 7:1-12 Wednesday 2/17 - Rom 3:19-27 & Mt 12:38-45 Thursday 2/18 - Phil 4:4-10 & Lk 8:4-15 Friday 2/19 - Rom 1:18-25 & Mt 18:23-35 Saturday 2/20 - Heb 12:28-13:9 & Mk 11:19-25 So, if we’re going to fast from anything this Lent, Pope Francis suggests that even more than candy or alcohol, we fast from indifference towards others. In his annual Lenten message, the pope writes, “Indifference to our neighbor and to God also represents a real temptation for us Christians. Each year during Lent we need to hear once more the voice of the prophets who cry out and trouble our conscience.” Describing this phenomenon he calls the globalization of indifference, Francis writes that “whenever our interior life becomes caught up in its own interests and concerns, there is no longer room for others, no place for the poor. God’s voice is no longer heard, the quiet joy of his love is no longer felt, and the desire to do good fades.” He continues that, “We end up being incapable of feeling compassion at the outcry of the poor, weeping for other people’s pain, and feeling a need to help them, as though all this were someone else’s responsibility and not our own.” Pope Francis’ February intentions Universal: Care for Creation That we may take good care of creation, a gift freely given-cultivating and protecting it for future generations. Evangelization: Asia That opportunities may increase for dialogue and encounter between the Christian faith and the peoples of Asia. “He who can give thanks for a little will always find he has enough.” F or the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Pope Francis’ Prayer for the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy December 8, 2015 - November 20, 2016 Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!” You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy, you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen. Save the Date!
