LETTER FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Welcome to GMCLA’s spring concert Bette, Babs, & Beyoncé - a
tribute to the female pop singers who have influenced our lives for
nearly eight decades. And what could be more fabulous
than a group of 250 gay men turning out hits from
Garland to Gaga, Minnelli to Madonna, or
Aretha to Adele? The women represented in
the songs on tonight’s concert have been
there for all of us in the celebrations, breakups and pivotal moments of our lives. We
hope you have as much fun experiencing
this concert from the audience as we are
having performing it!
Make sure you have your tickets now
for June 25 and 26 as GMCLA caps off
another exciting concert with Oye Mi
Canto – a collaboration with the first gay
men’s chorus in Cuba - Mano a Mano.
This historic concert event at the Alex Theatre
showcases the rhythms, passion and excitement of
Cuban music and shines a spotlight on Havana’s only
gay performing group. With the political walls opening
up between the US and Cuba, Oye Mi Canto
couldn’t be more timely and impactful. Don’t miss
this concert event that everyone will be talking
about!

GMCLA: 37 YEARS OF MUSIC AND A MISSION
GMCLA is one of the country’s largest all-male choruses and the
first openly gay chorus to tour central Europe (1991), broadcast
over Russian TV (1999), tour South America (2006) and perform for
two sitting U.S. Presidents.
In a society where LGBT inequality still exists, the Gay Men’s Chorus
of Los Angeles uses musical experiences to share our stories,
fostering acceptance and transforming communities into places
where all can be their true authentic selves. Since 1979, we have
used music to overcome prejudice. By commissioning new works
and arrangements that contribute to the male choral repertoire,
we seek out ways to attract new audiences by fostering a blend
of theatre, dance and choral music. Using our unique experiences
as gay, straight and bisexual men, we make music that reaches all
people with a message of unity.
GMCLA’s Youth and Community Outreach programs directly
benefit underserved youth in L.A. and beyond.
AMP (Alive Music Project) is an in-school experience for L.A.
students in grades 7-12. Our singers and staff present a dynamic
musical performance and discussion, sharing their personal
challenges and triumphs to inspire youth and to stamp out bullying.
AMP includes a master class, free tickets and transportation to our
concerts and a post-show discussion.
it gets better is our original musical currently touring the US, a story
that mixes music, humor and poignant narratives about being
LGBT in the United States. Each performance caps off a week of
educational workshops presented by a dedicated ensemble of
GMCLA actor/singers. This collaboration of GMCLA, Speak Theater
Arts and the It Gets Better Project helps communities create real
life solutions for youth by fostering LGBT acceptance and making
their communities safer.
