Having taught my GP students the causes and consequences of GLOBAL WARMING for almost 20 years, 3 years ago I wrote this article to inform the general public of problems likely to affect us. I would not say that it did touch the hearts and minds of a great number of people. It was not perceived as a priority for decision makers and opinion leaders in both the public and private sectors were under the sway of neoliberal values. The March 2013 flash flood will hopefully force us to rethink our development strategy. I am not a cockeyed optimist. I know that some are already looking for scapegoats, our national hobby. PA MWA SA, LI SA has become a central element of our culture. Yet my faith in humanity’s capacity to rise above pettiness to face survival issues makes me hope that we may start to see the beginning of a new mindset. This is why the article written 3 years ago seems to have a new relevance today. 01.04.2013 Although the Denial Industry is very active to feather the bed of neoliberalism and protect the interests of a few corporations, there seems to be NOW a consensus that humanity's future lies in a new course based not on growth but on development of a new kind. Capitalism, as we know it, is based on two negative values: cupidity and selfishness. It has TWO faces, a mild one called social democracy and a very aggressive one best known as TURBOCAPITALISM or MARKET FUNDAMENTALISM. The recent past has seen a lukewarm attempt to steer away from market fundamentalism but it now seems that pressure is building up to force the country to adopt the classical neoliberal doctrine with its wide assortment of deregulation and privatisation. MID (MAURICE ILE DURABLE) has not one iota of chance of success in a neoliberal environment; it has only a meagre chance of feeble success in a social democratic environment. But the further we move from the quick buck mentality, the closer we get to an environment based on the opposite of cupidity and selfishness, i.e. SHARING AND SOLIDARITY, the greater will be our chance of survival. Yes, MID is our survival kit if it becomes our vision and energy to make life meaningful in the wake of global warming catastrophes. MID is certainly not just another way to become rich. MID's success depends on nothing short of a cultural revolution. When the full impact of global warming and world economic recession is felt, reality as we know it will change in such a drastic and dramatic way that it will no longer be a question of 'should we do this or that?' as if we have a choice but rather 'there is no other way but ...'. Do it or die! Gone will be the days of 'manz banann dan de bout'. Just imagine this scenario. (I think it would be wrong to consider this pessimistic.) World tourism is shrinking; purchasing power in the so-called developed world is on a constant decline; the price of oil has become prohibitive; the internal combustion engine has been banned worldwide etc. etc. As a consequence of all this, protectionism has become the key policy throughout the world faced by floods, draughts, storms, massive refugee problems which make Darfur a fait divers. Let us imagine how then MID is to become our only survival kit. CHARTING A NEW COURSE The state of MID must be very strong and not just be a facilitator of neoliberal greed for easy money. It needs economic clout and resources to ensure suvival, security, justice, social and cultural development. Market forces will have to play second fiddle. Market fundamentalists have to reckon with that. 3 Land is our fundamental resource. We need it principally to ensure food security and for the building of homes for all. Speculation and the use of precious land to build sumptuous villas for the world's super-rich is certainly out of the question. FOOD SECURITY does not merely mean producing what is traditionally consumed but rather exploring new possibilities. I am convinced that a slow shift to breadfruit as the staple will boost up national food security efforts. We should also seize this opportunity to adopt a new nutritional culture to fight obesity and diseases connected with it. GENDER EQUALITY should replace patriarchy. Sustainable development based on sharing and solidarity means a new kind of relationship between men and women and also a more humane and tolerant attitude towards people with different sexual orientations. MID's success depends also on UNIVERSAL LITERACY and this can be achieved only if we are prepared to face the truth. Primary schooling in its present form does not generate a high level and rate of basic literacy; most Mauritians are semi-linguals, having a meagre smattering of two or more languages, but unable to master any of them properly; a dynamic bilingualism featuring Mauritian Creole (MC) and English can be achieved with a judicious language policy... This universal literacy and MC/ENGLISH BILINGUALISM will promote learning as a continuous life enhancing process and favour greater creativity. Technological development and the use of renewable sources of energy are necessary but inadequate if economic, political, social and cultural activities are conducted the way they are today. The concept of LOCALLY CENTERED ECONOMY is well worth investigating into. For example we could reorganise Mauritius into 20-25 autonomous municipalities endowed with various economic, political, social and cultural activities and institutions. Within a municipality people will use muscular power (walk or cycle) and solar-powered public transport would service inter-municipal travels. People must be empowered and GRASS ROOTS DEMOCRACY be made to thrive. Are we ready for this? Certainly not! But when the worse comes to the worse, we will have to change course and mindset and adopt new values and strategies. The need for a radical cultural change is already behind the door. We will have to invent our own models. Yoni is the female sex and linga the male one (Shakti and Shaktiman). Sexuality is at the centre of life and culture and Hinduism does not consider sex as a taboo or shy off it. The Khajuraho erotic sculptures, Tantric Yoga or The Kama Sutra are clear examples of this. Q2: How is it told? Answer: This poem is a sonnet (14 lines); each line has 10 syllables and there is no systematic rhyming. It is divided into 2 main parts: an octet (8 lines) and a sestet (6 lines). The octet describes a negative situation with ironic touches (lera legliz; nam kalimay, sanbrani, tanbalon; virzinite eternel). The sestet which is divided into a quartet (4 lines) and a couplet (2 lines) gives a different positive picture echoing the Perfumed Garden and ends with the celebration of sexuality between Shakti and Shaktiman, Parvati and Shiva, the passive principle (Shiva) and the active principle (Parvati). Q3: Personal response? Answer: This is finally a religious poem which condemns prudery and hypocrisy and celebrates true sexuality (not sex merchandising) as a path to liberation (moksha). Q1: What is it about? Answer: It shows the difference between selfish and selfless love. The clod is selfless love and the pebble selfish love. Selfless love builds heaven and selfish love builds hell. Q2: How is it told? Answer: The poem is divided into 3 stanzas. The first stanza is the voice of the clod, a lump of earth which is soft and life-giving. Its message is that of giving, sharing, comforting, soothing and loving. Although it is trampled upon, it sticks to its message of love and kindness. We can safely associate the voice with that of Jesus Christ. The second stanza is the voice of the narrator. The third stanza reveals the mindset of the pebble which is hard, heartless and unproductive. It enjoys the comfort of the brook while it sings a song of selfishness and cruelty. The pebble reminds us of Lucifer or Pontius Pilate washing his hands of Jesus. The symmetrical structure seems to suggest that the forces of goodness and evil are equally balanced or at a point of equilibrium and may topple over one side or the other. The future may not be rosy. It all depends on what we do. Q3: Personal response? It is a sad place where the mind is bound in chains (menot mantal) and basic human and spiritual values have simply disappeared. People have become commodities; love is dead; the funeral hearse has replaced the wedding carriage. Q2: How is it told? Answer: The poem in Morisien is made up of four stanzas of equal length. Each stanza has 4 lines and each line has 8 syllables and the rhyming pattern is quite regular – either rhyming couplet or ABAB. Strong images of distress underline the collapse of civilisation (child labour, useless wars, child prostitution and the reversal of values). Q3: Personal response? Answer: The poem is an attempt to create for Mauritians an atmosphere and mood similar to those which William Blake created for his readers in his poem ‘London’. 10.03.2013 8 LIVING TOGETHER IN LITERATURE ©Dev Virahsawmy The term ‘Living Together in Literature’ is polysemic. It may mean, inter alia, the relationship between texts or intertextuality; the relationship among personae within a text; literature as a bridge between cultures; literature as an instrument of nation building; gender sensitivity, neutrality and equality; and finally literature as an examplum of divine love and sustenance with the milk of human kindness. In fact I believe that living together in literature means all these and much more. INTERTEXTUALITY There is a belief that no text lives in a vacuum and consequently all texts, implicitly or explicitly, talk to each other across time and space. The impact of King James version of the Bible on the growth and development of English as a language and texts written in that language cannot be overlooked. In 1966 the novel ‘Wide Sargasso Sea’ by Jean Rhys became a concrete example of intertextual dialogue for the minor persona in Charlotte Bronte’s ‘Jane Eyre’ (1847), the mad creole woman, becomes a flesh and blood human being and a fully developed character and through her patriarchy, machoism and colonialism are denounced. A similar treatment is found in Tom Stoppard’s play ‘Rosencrantz and Guildernstern are Dead’ in which two minor characters from Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’ become two full-fledged characters caught in the confusing web of existence. In 1972, while I was a political prisoner, I wrote the play ‘Li’ in which the main protagonist, a Christlike figure, is murdered. The human drama is couched in images and echoes from the New Testament, The Ramayana, The Bhagavad-Gita, Germaine Greer’s ‘Female Eunuch’ and plays by G.B.Shaw and Jean-Paul Sartre. The more I look at my work, the more I realise how much I owe to works I have read or studied. All this makes me wonder whether I would have developed writing skills had I not been plunged into the deep waters of international literary works. And the irony of it all is that by living with others and learning from others, I have carved my own image and identity. LIVING TOGETHER IN FICTION If we had to rely on our senses only, we would only know what we see, hear or feel. So, to a great extent we know what others see, hear or feel because art in general and verse or prose literary works in particular are windows that open into the life experiences of others. Leo Tolstoy’s ‘War and Peace’ or John Steinbeck’s ‘The Grapes of Wrath’ tells us how other people cope with harsh reality; E.M.Forster’s posthumously published novel, ‘Maurice’, on homosexual love has considerably helped humanity to come to terms with different sexual orientations although homophobia is still strong and requires all our efforts to be defeated. Love relationship between people of different backgrounds (Paul and Virginie, Romeo and Juliet, Laila and Majnu, Antony and Cleopatra, Eloise and Abelard, Salim and Anarkali, Pokahontas and John Smith, Paris and Helen of Troy) has since time immemorial impressed and inspired people of all classes and creeds. Charles Dickens’ novel ‘Hard Times’ or Emile Zola’s ‘Germinal’ has shown to us the horror of working class reality or the grandeur of working class solidarity. 9 By refining language, poetry has given us a beautiful tool to connect with others, to share ideas and feelings. A play at the theatre, be it comic, tragic or tragicomic bind us together in a common experience and enhance our humanity. CULTURE DIALOGUE AND NATION BUILDING The realm where I’ve personally experienced most vividly the contribution of literature to the evergrowing process of ‘living together’ is my own homeland, Mauritius, a creole island as defined by Professor Megan Vaughan in her book, Creating the Creole Island: Slavery in Eighteenth Century Mauritius (Duke University Press, 2004). This is what she writes: “…by 'creole' I simply mean that the island, without natives, has always been the product of multiple influences, multiple sources, which to differing degrees merge, take root, and 'naturalize' on this new soil."(page 2) On this island there have been successive waves of forced, not-so-forced and free immigrants from Europe, Africa and Asia. The different groups have preserved their ethnic identities and have so far failed to develop a common national identity although they have a common history (they are all immigrants) and they have a common destiny (willy-nilly, they must learn to survive together). Race, class, caste and creed divisions are rife. Economic stakeholders prefer to divide and rule; religious and political leaders cannot afford to go against the grain for it may mean a loss of allegiance. But artists in general and creative writers in particular are duty-bound to go against the accepted norm for this is the price to pay to create the new. Pre-independence writing was dominated by French and English but independance saw the rise of new ideas and creative experience specially in the field of literature. First of all there was the drive to get the local language accepted as a language per se and not as a ‘patois’ or broken French. In the wake of this movement there was the emergence of a new literature using the local language Morisien as medium and expressing new aspirations in terms of social justice, gender equality, solidarity and sharing. The two theatre buildings, The Plaza and The Port Louis Theatre, citadels of elite culture, were taken by storm by plays in the local language. ‘Zozef ek So Palto Larkansiel’, the Morisien version of ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat’ by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice and ‘Zeneral Makbef’ an original full-length political satire became box-office successes and ran for weeks and months. Several books of poems appeared in the language of new aspirations; changes in mood and perceptions were palpable. Literary prose was slower to take off but soon the void was filled by some gifted writers. If secular literature was initially the spearhead of the movement, soon religious leaders realised they could no longer ignore the language of the people in a democracy and the translation of religious literature moved to the front line. Today the scene has changed radically from what it was 50 years ago. Morisien has become the L1 of 90% of the population; it is also the L2 of the remaining 10%; Morisien is taught as an optional language in primary schools; the public utility TV station has a channel almost exclusively in Morisien; the Open University of Mauritius will soon offer a course in Morisien-English bilingual studies; at the Mauritius Prison Services, Morisien is used as medium to teach basic literacy to nonliterate and non-numerate detainees (80% of inmates) as part of an intensive rehabilitation 10 programme and some detainees are already trying their hands at mother tongue creative writing. One day, we hope that some scholar will measure the contribution of secular and religious literature on the way reality has changed and is still changing. SARASWATEE, HELP US TO FORGE AHEAD The future looks bright but for those who are not blind there are heavy black clouds at the horizon. Global warming and climate change will soon wreak havoc and wreck the very foundation of this civilisation. To survive we must now start building tomorrow. Those having economic power prefer to turn a blind eye for gold coins are more attractive and mesmerising; again politicians will not dare say the truth for it might scare off votes; most religious leaders do not understand the problem and if some do they prefer to be silent so as not to antagonise the moneyed people. Most people are attracted by immediate gains and gratification. Only genuine artists and writers can be trusted to set the alarm bells ringing. Initially it could be like preaching to the wind but with time the poetic and prophetic words will be heeded and attitudes and mindset will change. Creative writing can also help, through the generation of new feelings and aspirations, to intensify the struggle against machoism and patriarchy. A superb example is Caryl Churchill’s ‘Top Girls’. Emancipation does not mean ‘women with balls’. Moreover language has to change. The flexibility of the English language, another creole language, allows it to change and become gender-sensitive whereas French seems unable to do so. Here is an example: Mille femmes et une chienne sont venues (feminine plural) (A thousand women and a bitch have come). Mille femmes et un chien sont venus (masculine plural) (A thousand women and a dog have come). A similar work is indispensable in Morisien. Recently I had to cross swords with sexist conservatism and get people to understand that in Morisien we should stop using ‘chermenn’ or ‘prezidan’ but rather a more gender neutral term like ‘Dimoun Dan Fotey’ (Person In The Chair or Chairperson). Macho reflexes are hard to change! But let us leave retrogrades in their muck and forge ahead. Allow me, friends, to end my contribution by reading to you an extract from my novela, ‘Lenpas Flanbwayan’(2007) translated into English by Shawkat Toorawa as ‘The Flametree Lane’. (Pink Pigeon Press, London, 2012) “The sea level kept rising. Everywhere a sweltering heat burned. The elderly and infants were among the first victims. Water started running out. Breathing was becoming difficult. Then, after a long drought, there were torrential rains. Several violent cyclones passed over the island and the drenched earth could no longer take any water. There were landslides and building began to crumble. The landslides were sometimes spectacular, almost as if there was an earthquake. Huge chunks of the hillsides shifted. Between the sea and the hillside there was now a canal through which small boats could navigate. Our area’s appearance changed completely. The natural surroundings had been martyred; it was as if a giant was shaking the dust off his coat and adjusting his body. Property prices plummeted. The recession spread its tentacles everywhere. The economy crashed. … It was as if Nature had an account to settle, and it was settling it with a vengeance. … When the youth in Danfour realised just how vulnerable Uni-City was, they descended upon it and looted the stores and the bungalows that had been abandoned or were in ruins. It was impossible to prevent chaos. Private security, the police… nothing worked. When it became clear that Uni-City was 11 going to end up like Pompeii, the economic and political leaders made a hasty retreat. Their money wasn't there anyway, it was in banks overseas. A habitat of several thousand souls would have to be rebuilt with very limited resources. A huge challenge, that! But there was no alternative. The countries and neighbouring regions that might have been able to help us were worse off than we were—we had to depend on our own strengths. Bala liked to say that we were against radical change. That change was acceptable as long as it was in the same direction as before. Now, change outside our control had forced us to change our very orientation. We had to re-invent our future, re-draw the contours of a new tomorrow. We were in an impasse.
