There's a bit of a
sting in the air this
month, and it's not all
coming from the smoke that's blowing
our way from the Wallow fire in Arizona.
The sad news of the death of Amanda
Younkin Franklin is probably common
knowledge by now to everyone in the
aviation community, and is a sobering
reminder of the consequences that we, as
aviators, must pay when things go terribly
wrong.

I hope that Amanda didn't suffer. I'm
pretty sure that Kyle is probably suffering
enough for the two of them right now. I
never knew Amanda and I don’t know
Kyle, but there are members of our chapter
that did know Amanda and do know
Kyle. I’ll bet that those who know Kyle
would say that he’s hurting. The burns on
his body that he suffered probably paled
in comparison to his scortched and
ruptured heart right now and I don't think
that I'd be sticking my neck out too far if I
were to say that I represent us as a chapter
when I say
that I wish
him well as
he
heals
from those
invisible
wounds.
There
are
‘gonna
be
scars.
The
way I see it,
death
is
always ugly
from
this
side of the fence.
I know that I'm not the only pilot around
that has muttered under his or her breath
something about
cheating death
again
while
taxing off the
runway
and
back to the barn
from a flight.
There's
something
a
little eerie about
those
words
though,
even
though at the
time that they're
muttered they're said in a light hearted and
humorous way. I think the eerie feeling is
because of a certain underlying truth in
those words, as we know all too well that
brain farts are not tolerated as well and
forgiving in the air as they are on the
ground, and that sometimes fate has it out
for us when things just start coming at us
sideways. Some days are better than others.
None of us cheat death and there’s no
guarantee that there’ll be a tomorrow, for us
or our loved ones. That's eerie. That’s also

This Month's Meeting
The June chapter meeting will be June 16, at Rick
Shore's home East of Santa Fe at 46-D San
Sebastian. There is a map linked in from the
meetings web page on the chapter web site
http://eaa691.org/officers.html. Social time starts
at 6:30 with the business meeting starting at 7:00.
Jerry Longmire will provide the technical program
and will be discussing Basic Aerodynamics and
what Reynolds numbers
mean to you as an aircraft
builder. Additionally, we
should get a look at Rick's
Slepcev Storch project.

There were still a few members interested in helping
Daniel Cassar with his zero Energy Quantum Engine
powered spaceship. However, after reviewing his
test plan and gathering comments from some of the
members, I ended all support. I really wanted to help
the guy with his dream, but some of the things he
was asking of volunteers were relatively high risk to
the personnel involved. He is scheduled to make his
drop on June 11. I'm sure I won't hear how it went,
but if any of you do, please report the results at the
meeting.

Young Eagles Flight
Rally
Hey Folks,
As most of you know the first Young Eagles
Event this year will be held on July 9th at
KLAM. As far as we know the runway should
reopen on July 1st, so that shouldn't be an
issue for us. I will let everyone know if that
changes. I would like to get a good handle on
who will be available to fly young eagles or
work ground crew on that day. Please respond
to this e-mail if you are planning on joining us
on July 9th to fly or do ground crew. I will
bring my findings to the June meeting. I also
attached the press release that I had sent to the
monitor and the Rio Grand Sun and a Copy of
the Flier (The flyer is on page 5 ~Roester). Feel
free to print it and post it anywhere I may
have missed. If anyone is involved in any
youth activities such as coaching, boy scouts,
girl scouts, church groups, etc please help
spread the word. Thanks in advance for your
help. We always get a great turnout of pilots
and ground crew, I am sure this year will be
no different.

Northern New Mexico
— Young people ages
8-17 will have a
chance to take to the
skies on July 9th as
the
Experimental
Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 691 hosts a
Young Eagles Flight Rally at Los Alamos
County Airport.
The rally is part of the EAA Young Eagles
Program; created to interest young people in
aviation. Since the program was launched in
1992, volunteer EAA pilots have flown more
than 1.4 million young people in more than 90
countries.
“Free airplane rides are just part of the
Flight Rally,” said James Shinas, spokesman for
the event. “We hope to build relationships
between pilots and young people, giving a new
generation a chance to learn more about the
possibilities that exist in the world of aviation.”
Young people are also given the
opportunity to discover how airplanes work
and observe how pilots inspect their planes to
help ensure that safety is the primary concern
before every flight.
Following the flight, each person, will
receive a certificate making them an official
Young Eagle. Their name will then be entered
into the “World’s Largest Logbook,” which is on
permanent display at the EAA Air Adventure
Museum in Oshkosh, WI.
Those attending the flight rally on July 9th
are asked to come to Los Alamos County
Airport Terminal Building, starting at 8am to
register for their flight. Registration and Flights
will commence between 8am and 12pm.

EAA Chapter 530 Young Eagles
EAA Chapter 530 will hold a Young Eagles
event on Saturday June 18th at
Mid-Valley. This chapter is great about helping
with our Young Eagles events
and we need to return the favor. The event will
be held between 8:00 am and

BD5 Micro Jet Visits Santa Fe
Keep an eye out in the next year or two for Justin Lewis
in the airshow circuit with his BD5J.
Fate smiled upon me
once again as I was
able to be in the right
place at the right time.
Being in the right
place at the right time
is a finely tuned skill
that airport bums aquire only after years of practice,
assuming that it doesn’t interfere with our
naps.
Bishop who founded a
company called Freedom
Jet that uses the BD5J as
military radar targets. Bob
is also known for his
airshow
and
TV
commercial performances
in the BD5J and is
considered the foremost
authority for the BD5J. As I
was in the wings as a
spectator, I didn’t get a
chance to ask all of the
questions I wanted to, so I
hope that all of the
information that I did
gather is accurate. My
memory has been known
to strip a gear here and
there.

rating, believe it or not,
from Larry for the BD5J.
I’m assuming this was one

his ground attendant Jeremy, pulled into
Santa Fe Cielo Azule hangars on May 25th
with a trailer filled to the brim with a sexy
little micro jet. Justin came into town to
meet up with our own Larry Salganek of
Fantasy Fighters here in Santa Fe and Bob

of the many technicalities he ‘ll have to deal with to
enter the airshow circuit with the BD. He was a
Naval(?) aviator and is getting ready to go to school
for the Warthog that he’ll be flying in the National
Guard now that he is out of the military. Be sure to

About that video ……….
Last month some of you might recall that I tried to
embed a video of a stunt pilot sent in by Manfred
Leuthard. The sharpest knife in the drawer I’m
not. As it turned out, that performer was Kyle
Franklin. The same Kyle Franklin that suffered the
tragic, terrible, fiery crash last year with his wife,
Amanda, who has since perished from the burns
and injuries that she sustained.
This video has now been posted on the chapter
web site thanks to our President Jeff Scott. For
those of you who may not have been able to view
it through the newsletter, or want to see a better
resolution of the performance, check out the link to
our chapter web site. It’s well worth watching if
you haven’t seen his routine. Since our chapter
(691) donated to their recovery fund, I felt that it
warranted some more attention.

Congratulations to Jeff Scott and his maiden flight with his “Scott”
Grizzly Cub. He described his first flight like this …… “I was a bit
surprised at the speeds. Based on the SuperCub book which says
the SuperCub should stall at 45 mph with flaps, I was expecting a
stall of 45 - 50 mph clean. During my fast taxi test I noted that it
jumped off the ground at 30 mph IAS. Hmm. That seemed a bit

enough, I never did stall it, but
was quite comfortable cruising
around at 35 mph IAS. Will
was pacing me at that point.
When I looked over at him, his
slats were out and he had the

Cruise was 84 mph
IAS@2400 rpm & 9500' or 95
mph IAS @2500 (WOT). I never
extended the flaps during the
first
flight. I logged 1 hour this

At the moment these
are only theoretical
figures
as
the
Hoverbike hasn't been
put through its paces
yet, but Malloy has constructed a prototype Hoverbike and
plans to conduct real world flight tests in a couple of months.

Adventurous motorcyclists might be
familiar with the thrill of getting airborne at
the top of a rise, but the Hoverbike is set to
take catching some air to a whole new level.
With a 1170 cc 4-stroke engine delivering
80 kW driving two ducted propellers, the

While out there, I managed to make it to the Air
and Space Museum. I spent most of my time staring
at the Messerschmitt 262.

hangar located at the Las Cruces International
Airport (LUR). All pilots and interested others
are invited. Consider this for a ‘Fly Out’ or for
other fun events!

has extended a generous offer for anyone
interested in attending the Thursday lunches at
Monroe’s. If you let him know a couple days in
advance that you’d like to attend, he will be
glad to pick you up at AEG (Double Eagle)
and take you to Monroe’s for the get together.
He didn’t mention anything about a ride back
to the airport though. You might want to
clearify that with him as you make
arrangements as you never know what kind of
twisted sense of humor Curtis might be
harboring.

Just For Laughs
My ex-wife started taking flying
lessons about the time our divorce
started and she got her license shortly
before our divorce was final, later
that same year.
Yesterday afternoon, she narrowly
escaped injury in the aircraft she was
piloting when she was forced to
make an emergency landing in
southern Tennessee because of bad
weather. Thank God our kids were
with me at the Beach House this
weekend.
The NTSB issued a preliminary
report, citing pilot error: Tina was
flying a single engine aircraft in IFR
(instrument flight rating) while only
having obtained a VFR (visual flight
rules) rating.
The Deaf Wife
A man feared his wife
wasn't hearing as well
as she used to and he
thought she might
need a hearing aid. Not
quite sure how to
approach her, he called
the family doctor to
discuss the problem.
The Doctor told him
there is a simple
informal test the husband could perform to give the
doctor a better idea about her hearing loss.
Here's what you do," said the Doctor, "stand about 40
feet away from her, and in a normal conversational
speaking tone see if she hears you. If not, go to 30 feet,
then 20 feet, and so on until you get a response."
That evening, the wife is in the kitchen cooking dinner,
and he was in the den. He says to himself, "I'm about 40
feet away, let's see what happens."
Then in a normal tone he asks, 'Honey, what's for
dinner? ………No response. So the husband moves
closer to the kitchen, about 30 feet from his wife and
repeats, "Honey, what's for dinner?"
Still no response.
Next he moves into the dining room where he is about
20 feet from his wife and asks, "Honey, what's for
dinner?"
Again no response.
The
absence of a postcrash fire was likely due to
insufficient fuel on board. No one on
the ground was injured.

She was very lucky.
So, he walks up to the kitchen door, about 10 feet
away…. "Honey, what's for dinner?"
Again there is no response.
So he walks right up behind
her... "Honey, what's for
dinner?"
