Tempting shopping paradise on the Isar river
Marienplatz [5]
The city’s most important
shopping miles branch out
from the Marienplatz and the
Town Hall. Next to the shops
selling traditional wear, you will
find department stores specializing in sports equipment
where you can outfit yourself
for your first excursion to the
Alps.
Tal and Platzl
Beginning on the Marienplatz,
the Tal (literally, the “valley”) is
an authentic shopping street
with second-hand shops selling everything from modern
and traditional attire to furniture stores. Souvenirs of a
different kind are sold between
the Tal and the Hofbräuhaus
(Platzl): from beer mugs to
hand-crafted items and from
products for soccer fans to
culinary treats.
Pedestrian Zone and
Stachus [4]
The popular shopping area is
the nerve center of the city.
Lined with department stores
and European chains it is great
for shopaholics and bargain
hunters alike.
Sendlinger StraSSe and
Asampassage [1]
About halfway between
Marienplatz and Sendlinger Tor
is the lovely Asamkirche with
its exquisite Rococo interior.
Along the way, the shops lining
the street beckon with stylish
clothes and accessories. Longestablished stores specializing
Fünf Höfe and
Schäfflerblock [7]
It’s not only people with an
artistic sense and eccentric
taste in fashion, literature and
interior design who will feel at
home in the shopping paradise
between Odeonsplatz and
Marienplatz. The vicinity of
the Kunsthalle gallery and the
splendid architectural surroundings create an urban beauty
promising excellence but still
within your reach. Trendsetters particularly appreciate the
Schäfflerblock stores. And if
you’re interested in culinary
crossovers, this is the place
to be: where else can you
find Asian delicacies, Belgian
chocolates, English scones and
Dresden stollen within such a
short distance?
Brienner StraSSe
The Brienner Straße is lined
with luxury stores and boutiques: this is the place to shop
for classy cars and crystal,
fine fabrics and Oriental rugs,
golf attire and Nymphenburg
porcelain – and last but not
least haute couture and interior
design.
Schwabing
The renowned student quarter
near the university features
excellent Antique shops and
bookstores (selling both new
and second-hand books), but
also discount boutiques of all
kinds: after all, young people
are the main customers here!
In the nearby Hohenzollernstraße, trendy and sassy styles
can be found at affordable

Gärtnerplatz
The picturesque Gärtnerplatz
district within walking distance
of the city center has become
a mecca for trendsetters,
where lovers of the eccentric
meet the international gay
scene. Creativity is everywhere, and the latest fashions
beckon in the shop windows.
The variegated boutiques give
the quarter a pert flair and a
cozy atmosphere.
MaximilianstraSSe [3, 6]
The famous lifestyle mile is an
architectural jewel specializing
in luxury goods. The shops
all bear prestigious names,
whether they sell watches, art
or fashion. Not far from the opera are the Maximilianhöfe, the
former royal stables categorized as an historic monument
which now houses offices,
cafes and stores where you
can shop and relax in a feudal
atmosphere.
ResidenzstraSSe and
TheatinerstraSSe [2]
The area originally reserved
for the purveyors to the royal
families is a great place to go
window shopping. The best
local and international designers and shoemakers tempt
men and women alike with
custom-made clothing, traditional outfits and gowns, hats
and footwear. Connoisseurs
will take delight in the variety
of fine tobacco products, teas
and coffees.

The VAT Rate in Germany is 19
percent for regular goods and 7
percent for some goods like food or
books. It is included in the purchase
price. As a traveler residing in a
non-EU country you are entitled to
claim a refund of your VAT – charges to be deducted – which leaves
you with up to 14.5 percent. To
qualify for Tax Free Shopping, you
need to make a minimum purchase
of Euro 25.00 and the goods need
to be exported within three months
plus the month of purchase.
Three easy steps
for Tax Free Shopping:
1_Refund Cheque: Ask the shop
staff for a Refund Cheque when
paying for your purchases
2_Customs Stamp: Show your
purchases, receipt and passport to
customs when leaving the country
and have your Refund Cheque
stamped. Note: If you are traveling
further within the European Union
you can only have your receipts
stamped at the final point of departure from the EU.
3_Refund Office: Show the stamped Refund Cheque and passport
at a nearby refund office. You can
get your refund as an immediate
refund on your credit card or paid
in cash. At Munich Airport, you‘ll
find the Cash Refund Offices in Terminal 1 (Arrival B) and in Terminal 2

Welcome to Gay and
Lesbian Friendly Munich
The whole year round a wide
range of special events entice
gay and lesbian visitors to
come to Munich and to be part
of the colorful clubbing scene:
On Shrove Monday, the
Oberangertheater offers the
city’s largest masked ball, on
Shrove Tuesday the craziest
fancy dresses can be found
in and around the “Deutsche
Eiche”. In March the stout
beer season attracts mostly
members of the leather scene.
Europe’s largest gay and lesbian film-festival “verzaubert”
(bewitched) held in April is a
must-see for all cineasts. On
Munich along with Berlin and
Cologne is one of the most
gay and lesbian friendly cities in Germany. Over 100,000
lesbians and gays living in Munich are proud of the colorful
diversity of their community.
Since 1996 a representative
of the “Rosa Liste” (pink list),
Munich’s gay and lesbian political party, is even a member of
Munich’s City Council. This is
something absolutely unique
in Europe. Munich is a city
of tolerance and acceptance
based on the slogan “live and
let live”!
20
the 1st of May, the community
dances around the world’s first
gay and lesbian maypole. This
is also the prelude to numerous street festivals that turn
various districts of Munich into
party zones and take place till
mid-September. The Gärtnerplatz-Festival with an open-air
concert, the Christopher Street
Day on the Marien Square
with a colorful parade and the
“town hall clubbing” as well
as the Hans-Sachs-StreetFestival belong to the absolute
highlights of Munich’s festival
season.
On certain dates during the
Oktoberfest some beer tents
are traditionally dedicated to
the gay and lesbian community. And even during the Christmas season the gay scene
attracts both locals and tourists
alike to the “Pink Christmas
Market” on the Stephans
Place in Munich’s Glockenbach
district.
Of course, Munich as a cultural center attracts gay and
lesbian tourists all year round.
Welcome to gay and lesbian

ICM – International Congress Center Munich [2, 3]
The ICM – International Congress Center Munich – is one
of today’s most state-of-the-art
and successful convention
centers in the world. In addition to an experienced team
of professionals, as a result of
its prestigious and inviting atmosphere, the center satisfies
all the prerequisites for events
of any size. With seating for
up to 6,000 people, flexible
25
rooms for up to 3,032 people
and some 8,000 squaremeter
of exhibition space, it sets new
standard terms of architecture,
equipment, infrastructure and
service.
A particular advantage is that
it is located directly next to the
New Munich Trade Fair Center.
Combining the ICM with Hall
C1 alone makes it an outstanding venue for events with up
to 12,000 participants. And by
combining the ICM with other
exhibition halls, even “mega
events“ for larger groups of
participants are no problem
whatsoever.
