This event takes us more deeply into God’s unfolding plan for Jesus and us. (Taken from “Living the Word”-WLP) Father Kane - Born and raised on the north side of Chicago. Ordained in 1951. Served in inner city parishes on the south side of Chicago in the 1950's. Also served as a Chaplain in Korea. From 1966-72, Father Kane served as Spiritual Director, Supervisor of Student Ministries and Director of the Deacon Program at the University of St. Mary of the Lake. He also helped develop the program for the permanent deacons of the diocese. Father Kane's passion is his care and concern about the Second Vatican Council especially as it applies to the laity. In 1972, he became the founding Pastor of Church of the Holy Spirit. He served there as pastor until 1995. Now Pastor Emeritus, Father Kane is busier than ever meeting the spiritual needs of people in the northwest suburbs: Church of the Holy Spirit, Holy Family, St. Hubert's, Friendship Village. He has given numerous missions and sessions the Second Vatican Council. Father Kane is known for his welcoming attitude, for his compassionate outreach, dynamic homilies, and his witty, hope-filled vision of life. The evening was a true Celebration of Lasting Love as we joined together to renew our vows and refresh our marriages. This Valentine Mass for married couples was the first event planned by the newly formed Saint Juliana Marriage Enrichment Ministry. This Ministry is an off-shoot of our PreCana Ministry for engaged couples. Some of our PreCana facilitators wanted to develop a way to enrich and encourage, to “Tighten the Knot”, for the married couples in our parish through liturgy, education, social events and workshops. With the blessing of Father Steve, the Marriage Enrichment Ministry planned, publicized and sponsored the First Annual Valentine Mass. Father Steve was our Celebrant and Homilist weaving the chosen readings into an inspiring homily reminding each couple to “Remain in God’s Love” and strive to keep our love, respect and time for our spouse as a primary part of our lives. To me the highlight of the liturgy was standing with 60 other couples, joining hands with my husband and renewing our marriage vows face to face. Remarkably this felt like a very private moment amidst the public affirmation of speaking our vows out loud, together with 120 other friends and neighbors! What a moving sign of our love for each other and of God’s love working in our Parish! We subtitled our liturgy “A Millennium of Marriages” and hoped that the total years of marriage for all of the couples attending would be over 1,000. We were pleasantly surprised to end up with a total of 1,806 years of marriage! If you missed attending this beautiful Mass, never fear, our Marriage Enrichment Ministry committee is planning another event for this spring. On Tuesday, April 23, there will be an Evening of Reflection for Married Couples with guest speaker Father Scott Donahue. More details on this evening will be announced soon so save the date and watch the bulletin for further details! If you are interested in joining the Marriage Enrichment Ministry, please contact Margie Shiel at 773.774.4956 or email at mshiel@stjuliana.org. The aim of RAINBOWS is to furnish our children and adolescents with an understanding of their new family unit, to assist in building a stronger sense of self esteem, and to direct them toward a healthy resolution of the changes that have taken place in their personal lives. A child is affected by the loss and change which occurs when there is a separation, divorce, remarriage, death of a parent or sibling, blended families, or adoption. The purpose of RAINBOWS is to provide our children an opportunity to share their feelings with people their own age which is supported by a trained, caring, compassionate adult. Our goal is to help children support each other; to put their feelings into words; to work through the changes and frustrations; and to build a stronger sense of self esteem. We will have 12 group meetings which will be held after school on Mondays, beginning the week of February 25, 2013. To sign your child up or if you have any questions, please call 773.631.2256 or email Diana Laske, Rainbows Coordinator at dlaske@stjuliana.org. Honorary Chairperson Spotlight: Kathleen Barton This week we’re very happy to share a little of Kathleen Barton’s story and her special connection to Saint Juliana. Kathleen’s family moved to Edison Park in the 1950’s and she began 1st grade where Sister Joel taught her to read and write. Not only did Kathleen, her sisters and brother attend Saint Juliana, her mom, Ann Schwaba taught here for 27 years! And when she eventually became a teacher, Kathleen’s first teaching assignment was second grade at…you guessed it, Saint Juliana School! But, of course, Saint Juliana has been a part of more than just teaching and school administration for Kathleen, she also received all of her sacraments here including one of her favorite memories: The day she was married at Saint Juliana Church. “It was a bright, sunny day that proved to be everything a bride could want.” When asked to describe Saint Juliana, Kathleen replied “Saint Juliana is a very welcoming place with meaningful liturgies and opportunities to meet and worship with a faith-filled community. Saint Juliana has been a large part of my life and frankly, just feels like home. We can certainly understand why it feels like home and we are very happy that Kathleen is a member of our parish family! “A Special Hope…” Shop Local & Show Your Saint Juliana Pride! Have you ever considered how much the Edison Park community helps Saint Juliana? It's pretty impressive. And so is the level of sponsorship given to us by our local businesses. Many of our parish groups and events receive a helping hand from these businesses like the Mother's Club, Men's Club, Fine Arts, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts to name just a few. So we're asking everyone to let these businesses know how much we appreciate them. Every time you shop local let them know your from Saint Juliana. Put a little "St J" on the receipt or ask the cashier to let the manager know Saint Juliana appreciates everything they do for us. Let's not wait until Saint Patrick's Day to paint the town Saint Juliana green! Share your Saint Juliana photos and stories! Were you baptized at Saint Juliana? Did you graduate from Saint Juliana? Perhaps you got married here? Or maybe all three! We’re looking for your stories, pictures and memories to help us tell the story of the last 85 years. Drop off your stories or Email them to us at Stjuliana85th@gmail.com or join us on Facebook. Auction Items Needed Have you got something spectacular that would make an awesome auction item for our benefit gala? Do you want bragging rights for offering the auction item that gets the highest bids?
