ST. SIMON the APOSTLE PARISH
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
=
St. Paul today speaks about the reality of his own
life. Paul was a devout Pharisee. He wanted to
be as perfect a religious Jew as anyone. But after
discovering Christ, he realized that his whole way
of life was not what would bring him salvation. He
tells people that it is not what he does that wins
salvation, rather it is God’s gift of salvation that
now determines what he does. He tells people
that it is trust in God’s love for him that saves
him. And because of this, Paul wants to live his
life differently. Now, Paul lives his life in pursuit
of attaining the gift that God offers him. He also
knows that he does not fully possess it, but each
day he lives his life so as to gain the gift. Paul
knows that in this world the gift can be lost, not
because God withholds it, but because we can
fall victim of thinking that we already possess it.
Paul says that we have to live each day on its
own. We cannot think that because of what we
did yesterday carries over to certain salvation
today. No, each day we have to strive to live our
lives in conformity with the Gospel so that we
truly can attain Christ Jesus. Although the past
may give us the ability to better imitate Jesus
Christ, it is no guarantee. It is the way we live in
the present, straining toward perfection in Jesus
Christ for our future that will allow us to grasp the
prize that Jesus won for us: eternal life.
Fr. Rick

behavior? How can you resist these feelings?
