Ministry to the Sick and Parishioners confined to home have visitations that are scheduled on a
regular basis. Please notify the parish office to make arrangements.
Religious Education Classes are held at St. Joseph’s High School following the 9:00 AM Mass
for all public school students, grades K-11, and parochial students preparing for Sacraments.
ST. JOSEPH’S CHURCH—PITTSFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS
The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary—This feast is a
very old solemnity in the church. It has been celebrated throughout the church from the sixth century on. Originally celebrated in
the East, the ancient title is the Dormition of Mary, or the Falling
Asleep of Mary. The earliest writing we find of this feast is from
the fourth century and it is written in the voice of St. John, whom
Jesus entrusted Mary to the care of as he hung upon the cross.
The teaching is that Mary was assumed into heaven after her "falling asleep in the Lord" before her
body suffered any decay. This doctrine of the church--even though the church has been celebrating this belief for centuries--was not declared a dogma until November 1, 1950 by Pope Pius XII. While the Eastern
Orthodox call this event the "dormition," the Roman Catholic Church calls it the Assumption.
Roman Catholicism is silent on the details of the Assumption. Therefore, Roman Catholics legitimately
can believe that Mary did not die before the Assumption. The holy day has always been celebrated in the
church on August 15.

The St. Anne Society will meet on Wednesday, August 20, at 6:30 p.m. in the Parish
Center. Following a brief business meeting, the evening will feature a variety of wonderful
events. A guest speaker, Barbara Pastie, a Certified Shake Your Soul Instructor which is a
form of dance and body movement for people of all ages, will demonstrate the “Shake
Your Soul” yoga style movement program that she can adjust for people of all ages and
physical ability. The annual baby shower will also take place. It has been strongly suggested that we refrain from buying the “cute little baby outfits” and bring more practical
gifts such as: Diapers—size 4 & 5, or baby wipes, formula, crib sheets, bibs, and burp
cloths. After we have exercised and perused the baby items, we can refresh ourselves with
our summertime Ice Cream social. Everyone is welcome to come out of the summer heat
and humidity and enjoy some fun, refreshment, exercise in our air conditioned Parish
Center.
From the Gospel of the Assumption of The Blessed Virgin Mary, Luke 11: “Blessed is the womb that carried you...Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.” The dignity of each
human life is the blessing of the womb.

CALLING ALL KIDS
We are coming back. We will once again continue with the Children’s Liturgy of the Word
(CLOW) at the nine o’clock Mass beginning
September 7th. Plan on being there with us to
celebrate and really hear God’s Word.

Preparing for Sharing Roots Festival—You’re invited to a
workshop on making Italian Meat Sauce & Fettuccini Noodles!
Please join us on Thursday, August 28, at 9 AM in the Parish Center. We will be making Italian Meat Sauce—fresh, frozen, and packaged in quart containers will be on sale for $3.50 each. Also Fettuccini noodles, in 1/2 pound packages will be available at the
Italian Booth for $2.00 each. Lunch will be provided. Many hands
make for light work! Hope to see you there!
The Polish Community Club, Inc., 55 Linden Street, is hosting a fundraiser to benefit the Wounded
Warrior Project, Rockin’ for Hereos II, on Saturday, August 16th. There is a $10 cover charge & the
event begins at 12 noon on the Club grounds, BYOC—Bring Your Own Chair! Bands include: BlackWater, Lulu and The Shoemakers, Jill Gallagher Band and Red Handed. The first bands begins at 1 PM.
Outside Cash Sales include Cash Bar, hamburgers, hot dogs, hot sausage. On Sunday, August 17th, the
club is hosting a Poker Run For Fun & Car Show to benefit the club. The Car Show starts at 10 AM &
the Poker Run begins at 12 Noon. Registration fee: $20 per poker player. Car Show only: $10. Picnic at

"During
the fourth
watch of the night,
he came toward them
walking on the sea."
The disciples weren't
prepared to see Jesus
walking on water.
They had already witnessed plenty of miracles at the hands of their teacher; only hours earlier he
had been curing the sick, and had multiplied five loaves
of bread and two fish into enough food to feed thousands. But this miracle was different. This one wasn't
to heal anyone or provide for anyone. This miracle
seemed more like a manifestation: a clear revelation of
Jesus' divine power. But the disciples were slow to get
the message. First, they thought they saw a ghost.
Then, Peter tried to step out in faith, but he fell when
the wind picked up. It wasn't until the storm ended
and the disciples were safe that they made their profession of faith, "Truly, you are the Son of God."
Healings, miracles, and manifestations of divinity weren't quite enough to make these men believe. The disciples' faith seems to have been dependent upon the
personal experience of being saved. To this point, the
mighty signs and works of Christ had been done on
behalf of others. They were wondrous to behold, but
apparently not enough to elicit a full declaration of
faith in Jesus. But when these frightened men had
their fears relieved, then they were ready to believe.
This is what Jesus wants to do for every one of us. He
became man to save us. He died on the cross to take
away our fears, to forgive our sins, and to give us eternal life. These aren't just stories about someone else's
life. This is the story of our life. Like Peter, Jesus says
to us, "Come." May we respond with confidence, putting our trust in the One who has the power to calm
the storms in our lives too.
