Anthony... A popular Disney film from Pixar is out at the moment, called Finding Dory. Dory is a wide-eyed, blue tang fish who suffers from memory loss every 10 seconds or so. The one thing she can remember is that she somehow became separated from her parents as a child. With help from her friends Nemo and Marlin, Dory embarks on an epic adventure to find them. Her journey brings her to the Marine Life Institute, a conservatory that houses diverse ocean species. One of the very attractive themes for me in the film is the instinct she has to find her family, to find a home and have a sense of belonging and to rediscover who she is. Perhaps we all have within us that sense of restlessness. We leave our own home and family as we become adults and make our way in the world. Our restlessness is a search for a sense of belonging and coming home. This does not mean to go back to our childhood home but to discover our origin and real home. We are like this little fish, on a journey of discovery. God has put within us a desire to search and find him. St Augustine’s famous phrase is often repeated and very apt. “You have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless, until they can find rest in you.” Thus our true home is in heaven and we are all on this journey. We, as a Church are a pilgrim people. We encourage one another and through the celebration of Mass we experience great intimacy with Jesus and what we celebrate is a foretaste of the great eternal meal and celebration when we reach our true home. Dory suffered from short memory loss and our participation in the Mass is a great counter balance to our own tendency to forget all that God had done for us and that he is calling us home.
