Pastor’s Desk
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Please see the statement in today’s bulletin from the National Conference of Catholic Bishops concerning the recent Supreme
Court decision affirming gay marriage as a Constitutional right. Also, kindly read the insert on Religious Liberty, which was
prepared prior to the Supreme Court decision.

Thank you to all those who continue to make their pledges to our “We Are Living Stones” Capital Campaign. Your pledges
toward our goal of $1,066,452 now total $720,086.00. Based on the payments to date, we may expect at least $41,051.23 to come
back to us in October (more by then as your payments are made, and some each quarter after that). This will help us to begin to
cover the costs of replacing the two heating/cooling units for Conlon Hall (which was delayed last week due to a delivery problem
but done this week for $50,785.00) and the Church boiler, estimated between $60,000.00 and $80,000.00. So, if you have not
made a pledge, payable over four years, please consider doing so now. Pledges may be dropped off at the rectory, placed in the
collection basket, or sent directly to the Archdiocese. I count on each family to make some contribution to our parish and our
Archdiocese through this Campaign.
Msgr. Richard Arnhols, Pastor
Reflection on Today’s Readings
No one likes feeling unappreciated. But this seems to be the common lot of the prophets of scripture, those who bear God’s word
to God’s people. God tells the prophet Ezekiel that the people to whom God is sending him are “hard of face and obstinate of
heart.” Hardly an appealing audience. And in Mark’s Gospel, Jesus faces a similar rejection, even though it is in his own
hometown that he is speaking. Indeed, the fact that they think they know all about him makes his neighbors even more unwilling
to listen to him.
But, as God’s words to Ezekiel make clear, the criterion for a prophet’s success is not acceptance of his message but simply
speaking the word of God: “whether they heed or resist...they shall know that a prophet has been among them.” Like the farmer
in the parable read three weeks ago, the role of the prophet is to sow the seed, not to make it grow; the prophet is to make God’s
word present in the world, not to ensure its acceptance. A prophet who looks for success and appreciation will soon be
disappointed.
Paul’s remarks about the “thorn in the flesh” from which he suffered casts further light on this. Whatever the nature of his
affliction, Paul interprets it as a reminder not to think in terms of success but in terms of faithfulness. In Paul’s case, however,
the danger seems to be that he would become puffed up with his success rather than dejected at his lack of it. His physical
affliction is a reminder of the sufficiency of God’s grace for whatever task God gives to us. So whether we face failure or
success, we must always remember that what counts is faithfulness.
“Holy Spirit of God, you are with us in our successes and in our failures. Help us to remain aware of your presence always, and
keep us faithful to the life to which God has called us. Amen.”
Summer Prayer
As we begin the summer months, gracious and loving Jesus, remind us of Your ever present guidance and love.
Give us confidence in Your presence, remembering all that we have, and let us live it in our summer experiences.
As we work, play, and enjoy our family and friends this summer, may we feel Your love within us,
guiding us toward all that is right and just.
Let us be grateful for the gift of summer, Jesus. Allow us to enjoy it safely and remind us daily of Your love for us. Amen.
Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!
“As the Lord spoke to me, the spirit entered me and set me on my feet, and I heard the one who was speaking say to me,
‘Son of man, I am sending you…’” Ezekiel 2: 2-3
God asks each of us to do some special work for Him. He gives us the resources we need to do His work. However, do we listen
to God when He calls? Do we get up on our feet and give our talent to do the work He asks of us? Remember, God doesn’t call
the equipped, he equips the called.

Farewell….
Transfiguration has become a place in which a diverse student population thrives in a setting of
academic excellence, but also in an environment of cultural diversity upon which students and faculty
build on the values that bind us together while respecting the diversity and richness of various cultures.
It has been my honor and privilege to have served as a Catholic School principal in the Archdiocese of
Newark for the past 11 years. During that time, Transfiguration Academy has gone from merely a concept
to one of the finest schools in the Archdiocese.
The time has now come to have my succesor take Transfiguration to the next level and beyond.
There are many people who through their support are responsible for the Academy’s successes to date,
none of whom are more responsible than YOU, our parishioners. It is through your support that we are
able to provide the finest Catholic School education in the Archdiocese.
I ask your continued support for Transfiguration and its new principal, Mr. James Carlo.
With your support and God’s continued grace, Transfiguration will continue to remain an exemplary
Catholic elementary school, well into the future.
Sincerely,
Sal Tralongo
