Did you know that only 17% of Catholics actually go to Mass each weekend and that this number has been on the decline for many years? Did you also know that 32% of people who attend Christmas and Easter Masses only come to church once or twice a year? As your pastor, I believe that this is an opportunity our parish cannot afford to turn away from any longer, and that the time has come to do something to help re-engage those who have fallen away from the practice of the Catholic Faith. During the upcoming Easter season I am implementing a bold and innovative program that will help evangelize both engaged and disengaged Catholics in our parish. In coordination with an organization called “Dynamic Catholic,” a free Catholic book will be given to each and every parishioner who attends Mass on the weekend of Easter Sunday. Recent studies have shown that parishioners who read Catholic books on a regular basis are three times more likely to volunteer their time at their parish. These parishioners also financially contribute four times more than those who are less engaged with their faith. To make this program a reality, I am asking for your help. Would you be interested in being an integral part of this innovative parish evangelization program? Please fill out the form below and place your contribution into next weekend’s collection or mail it to the parish. A list of the names of donors who give $100.00 or more to this program will be inserted into each book we give out and the names will also be published in the bulletin, unless you would like to remain anonymous. Donations in memory of a deceased loved one are also encouraged. Thank you for taking the time to consider helping me make this bold and ambitious program a reality and a success. In Christ, Fr. For my Eagle Project I had chosen to collect hats, scarfs, and gloves to go to St. John the Baptist Church for people in need. I had called upon St. Mark parishioners to assist me with this endeavor and you answered. I am happy to announce that the donations were overwhelming! The total collected were: 134 hats, 100 scarfs, and 173 gloves! This was more than I had hoped for! I felt that this was a huge success and know that Saint John the Baptist Church was very happy receiving these items. Your kindness and generosity were greatly appreciated. Thank you all for making someone’s life a little better because you cared and for coming together as a parish to make this happen! God Bless. – Zachery Zeoli Sponsor certificate requests If you are 18 years of age or older, you must be registered with the Parish as an adult and be Confirmed in the Roman Catholic Church. If you are married, your marriage must be recognized by the Roman Catholic Church. This is especially important if you are asked to be a Godparent for Baptism or a Sponsor for Confirmation. It takes 6 months of attending Mass regularly to be eligible. First Sunday of Lent ~ February 22, 2015 Suggested Lenten Actions Catholic Charity Appeal and Operation Rice Bowl Consider fasting and giving the money to the poor. Rice bowls are available at the doors of the church. Stations of the Cross Every Friday of Lent at 6:00pm Daily Mass Monday-Friday at 8:00am Confessions Every Saturday from 3:00pm to 3:30pm The Diocese of Providence will begin its Catholic Charity Appeal, an annual fundraising initiative that provides crucial assistance to numerous ministries across the diocese. These ministries provide for the physical, educational, and spiritual needs of thousands of Rhode Islanders. Some examples include: offering grants for seminarian education, assistance for students attending Catholic high schools, as well as support for seniors citizens and programs to help the homeless. Our first in-pew solicitation will be next weekend, February 28th & March 1st. The second in-pew solicitation will be the following weekend March 7th & 8th for those who missed the fir st one. Many of our parishioners will be receiving a mailing from Bishop Tobin asking for your support of the 2015 Appeal. Please be assured that St. Mark Church will receive credit for any gift that you make through the mail. Every Friday of Lent at 6:00pm The season of Lent began on Ash Wednesday and all members of the Catholic Church should be aware of the following: Abstinence from meat every Friday of Lent, for those 14 and older, is required by Church law. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are fast days: those between the ages of 18 and 59 should eat less; that is, taking no solid food between meals and only one full meal that day. Serious health conditions excuse a person from these regulations. Following the implementation of the revised Code of Canon Law on Nov. 27, 1983, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops determined that the rules of fast and abstinence which have existed for the last several years in this country be maintained; namely, that the faithful observe suitable penitential practices on all Fridays throughout the year. These penitential practices need not include abstaining from meat. However, as indicated above, the faithful must not eat meat on all the Fridays of Lent as well as Ash Wednesday. They must also observe faithfully the fast regulations as they have been stated above in accord with the universal law of the Church. (Cf. Code of Canon Law, Canons 1250-1252) Sacraments for the Homebound When someone who has attended Mass their entire lives can no longer participate in Sunday worship, it is very important that we as the Church bring the Eucharist to them. Sr. Angelina and our Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion visit the sick and homebound members of our parish. If you, or someone you know, who is a member of our parish needs to be ministered to, please contact Sr. Angelina at 942-1616.
