Symbols and Images
The symbolic gesture of the Sign of the Cross gathers our whole being into the mystery of the Trinity - our God who is three in one. Using three fingers of the right hand, we trace the cross by touching our forehead, heart and shoulders. This encompasses our intellectual, emo onal and working lives and gathers all aspects of ourselves together in the name of God and of the cross which freed us. The Pastor’s Pen
Frs. John Newman, Hilary Flynn and I travelled to Townsville on Tuesday afternoon to join in the Funeral
Mass for a brother Priest Fr Peter Quilty; the Mass was at Holy Trinity Mundingburra at 6pm, there was to
be no burial, Peter has willed his mortal remains to James Cook University for research.
Peter had been a Military Chaplain for some 40 years, while on posting to Townsville he took a liking to the
North, so stayed on for the last 10 years, endearing himself to many. He was a member of many
organisations including Alcoholics Anonymous, Caritas and St Vincent de Paul, having a particular charism
to meet and work with the ‘little’ people.
Peter was a close friend of the late Bishop Michael Putney, while living at the Bishop’s Residence he was the
one to ensure that the Bishop’s House was always a home of welcome to all weary Clergy Travellers.
Peter made it clear that his was a special vocation, his enthusiasm was infectious, he was generous and had
a perpetual smile, to me it seemed that he had found the Pearl of Great Price, (friendship with Jesus), he
wanted to share it, and he was a means of radiating God’s love ------to the end.
His memorial card reads: “Remember, we are but travellers here.” (Mary Mackillop 1867).

Sharing the Tradition
‘The mystery of the Most Holy Trinity is the central
mystery of Christian faith and life. It is the mystery
of God in himself. It is therefore the source of all the
other mysteries of faith, the light that enlightens
them. It is the most fundamental and essential
teaching in the “hierarchy of the truths of faith”’
(Catechism of the Catholic Church, 234)


Many of the prayers of the Church express our belief in a Triune God (three persons in one). One
of the greatest prayers is the Sign of the Cross where we dedicate ourselves “In the name of the
Father, Son and Holy Spirit.’‛

St Patrick reportedly used the shamrock to describe the three persons in one God to the pagans
of Ireland.

St Augustine described the Trinity as the lover, the beloved and the love between.
