The Murmur - The Johns Hopkins Medical Auxiliary
The Murmur is the official newsletter of the Johns Hopkins Medical Auxiliary. It is published six times per year. July/August 2011 Volume 13, Issue 1 JHMA on the Web: www.jhmaonline.org PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE By Jennifer Brezina elcome to the JHMA! Or welcome back, if you are a ----------------------------------returning member. However long you've been hereand -----------------------------------the dates currently range from about 12 days to 12 -------------------------------------------yearsZHKDYHDJUHDW\HDULQVWRUH. I'm thrilled and humbled to serve as your president this -----------------------------------year, and we have an enthusiastic leadership team in ---------------------------------------place. This is my third year in Baltimore, and it feels more -----------------------------------and more like home WKDQNVWRWKH-+0$:H UHD unique organization with a three-pronged mission: to support each other, provide social opportunities, and give back through service. Really, no one else knows what it's like to be married to a medical spouse at Johns Hopkins. I can't help but laugh sometimes when well-meaning family friends ask if my husband Paul is still in medical school (we're going on year 13 of training after combined MD/MBA degrees, combined OB/GYN and Internal Medicine residencies, and finally a three-year fellowshipand I know this pales in comparison to some of you!) Hopkins is an institution second-to-none, but it's also very demanding. I hope the JHMA helps you get through the crazy call schedules, night float months, out-oftown conferences, and general stress. I hope your spouse also finds some fun activities to enjoy through the JHMA. I truly believe we have something to offer everyoneEXWLI\RXGRQ WVHHZKDW\RX UH looking for, please speak up! Many of our activities got rolling by someone having an idea and taking initiative. Also, if you have expertise to share with the JHMA, let us know. We have so much talent among our membership. Jump in and get involved, whether you are a new member or longtime member. I'm delighted to announce the Johns Hopkins House Staff Council recently funded the JHMA with $2,000 to support our Welcome Picnic, Welcome Guide, ongoing charity work, and our orientation activities this year. We're so grateful for the Council's generous support, which will enable us to do even more as an organization as we strive to make the Hopkins experience better for our members. For the coming year, there are four specific goals the executive board has identified. First, we plan to further develop the philanthropy arm of the JHMA, so be on the lookout for upcoming ways to volunteer. Second, we plan to explore more partnerships within the community. We have already formed a new partnership with the Johns Hopkins Federal Credit Union, and they are generously sponsoring our annual Crab Feast in July. Our advertising coordinator, Stephanie Neufeld, has also developed new partnerships with the National Aquarium and Port Discovery, and both are donating a free family membership to the JHMA this year (to be raffled off to members at the Welcome Picnic). As part of these new partnerships, we're aiming for more subsidized activities for our members and their families, which is another goal. Finally, we will continue to expand awareness of our organization and spread the word about what we're doing among the Hopkins community. Very best wishes to you for the coming year in Charm City. And remember, my door is always open to you. Sincerely, Jennifer Brezina WELCOME PICNIC SET Mark your calendars for Saturday, July 23, when the JHMA will hold its annual Welcome Picnic. Bring your whole family or come by yourself to meet new members and catch up with old friends. A picnic lunch and drinks will be provided.
