EDITOrial
Thionville welcomes this year the 13th edition of the International Prize
«Charlemagne» of photography. It really is an opportunity for our city to be since
twenty six years the host of this competition which does not stop growing : not less
than twelve nationalities will be represented this year, a record!
Price "Charlemagne"
While we live in a society saturated by images of all kinds, and moreover by images
often modified and retouched, it is useful to take time to appreciate the sincere work
of photographers, professionals or amateurs.
Patrick DEVRESSE (France) / Oignies - Le Mausolée
300 € offered by the SMVT "3 Borders", silver medal of the FIAP
Undoubtedly, the theme chosen this year - Workplaces - will be once again source of
inspiration for the participants. We shall be lucky enough to dive into intense clichés,
capable of calling out to us, of shaking up us sometimes but also able to make us
travel and smile.
The photography is extraordinary by the way it fixes the time and make us share immortalized moments.
I particularly appreciate that the organizers ask participants for a series of photos and not only a unique picture
: it allows each to enter a little more in the universe of the artist and to project yourself in his approach.
Thus, let’s be transported by the creativity of all these enthusiasts for whom, rightly, a picture is worth one
thousand words.

Every week, about ten amateurs and passionate with photography join to the
workshop photo of the Center «Le Lierre» to deepen their technical knowledge, but
also exchange on their images and their respective practices.
The members of the workshop worked, this year, on the theme of the 13th international
price Charlemagne: Workplaces. A selection of their photos will be presented on the
occasion of a visible collective exhibition to the In Vitro Space of Thionville from 16
till 22 June.

The first “Festival de la Culture industrielle et de l’Innovation”
(“Festival of industrial culture and innovation”) assembles associations,
initiatives, municipalities and institutions with the aim to give a better
visibility to industrial culture and innovation in the southern region of
Luxembourg.
Since decades this region is the setting of large economic, social and
cultural mutations after the decline of the steel industry and the revival of the
establishment of a new knowledge “industry”. The Festival, which is a project
of the “Fondation Bassin Minier” reflects these mutations across a spate of
events covered under the theme “workplaces”.
From 3rd of may to 4th of july about twenty of partners offer around forty
events (films, exhibitions, conferences, guided tours, round tables, colloquiums…).
The Festival will be closed on the 4th of july with a colloquium on the topic “Architecture et travail –
de l’industrialisation à la ville du savoir“ (“Architecture and work – from industrialisation to the city of
knowledge”) organised by the Fondation Bassin Minier in collaboration with the Fonds Belval.
In the evening a large public celebration will inaugurate the site of the blast furnaces with the first illumination
of the industrial remains following the project elaborated by the artist Ingo Maurer. From this point forward the
blast furnaces will be open for visitors.
Officially recognized on June 29th, 1976, the SNCF THIONVILLE / YUTZ photoclub was created by railroad employees passionate with photography and with
cinema.
If the membership in the UAICF (Artistical and Intellectual union of the French
Railroad employees) indicates that we come from the railroader cultural world, our
affiliation in the FPF (Photographic Federation of France) demonstrates, an openmindedness needed for the flourishing of our activity, the essential purpose of which
is to share in a friendly climate, with all the enthusiasts, our taste for the image.
The UAICF, the Works council of the Railroaders of METZ / NANCY, as well as the municipalities of THIONVILLE
and YUTZ, by them invaluable support, allow us to envisage the future with serenity.
To all who contribute or have contributed both to the existence of our club and to its success, find here the expression
of our profound gratitude.
Amateurs of photography, let’s feel welcome in our weekly meetings, on Fridays at 8 pm, in our new local, Impasse
des Hauts-Fourneaux in Thionville.
