Winter 2015 - Coastal Hospice
WINTER 2015 Thank you for spreading your wings Each year at this time we ask you to “Be an Angel” and include Coastal Hospice in your end-of-year giving. And every year, you respond with kindness and generosity. A Message from Your gift supports charity President care at Coastal Hospice, which supports our patients and their Alane Capen families. Charity care covers: 1. Care for patients who have no resources to pay. From medications for pain to a hospital bed that will assure safety and comfort in the patient’s home, Coastal Hospice provides excellent care and support, regardless of the patient’s ability to pay. 2. Patients’ needs that aren’t part of the hospice benefit, like hearing aid batteries or a ramp that will accommodate a wheelchair. 3. Services and programs for which we do not bill, like bereavement counseling and our Compass program. Last year Coastal Hospice spent more than $650,000 for charity care. Your giving reaches our patients and their families in very tangible ways. One patient came to stay at Coastal Hospice at the Lake, rather than spend her final days alone and unsafe. There she received care and found companionship. More than once last year we arranged for the installation of a phone, phone line and Lifeline service for patients who needed it to remain at home. And in many cases, the community members who are struggling with the loss of a loved one and attend one of our bereavement support groups outnumber those whose family member was in our care. On behalf of the hundreds of patients and families you help, thank you. Thank you for proving that the world is indeed inhabited by Angels. To donate, please use the enclosed envelope or use a credit card at CoastalHospice.org Thriving in hospice care: Navy veteran knew the ropes Charles “Dick” Rohm was not only our patient. He helped celebrate Veterans’ Day with Coastal Hospice at Deer’s Head. W hen Charles “Dick” Rohm came into hospice care last April, he could barely walk. After thriving in hospice care, he was soon back on his feet and out of the house with a walker. On Nov. 11 this year, Dick was proud to support the Veterans’ Day ceremony at Deer’s Head Hospital with reports from his boatswain’s whistle. At the time, he was at Coastal Hospice at the Lake for a respite stay, something he did regularly to give his caregiver a week-long break. Just days after that, Dick passed away peacefully at Coastal Hospice at the Lake. We are grateful to have interviewed him, and, more than that, grateful he shared his hospice story with us so we could share it here. Dick was born and raised in Powellville. A Navy veteran, he was a proud and active member of the Powellville VFW. He and his wife had parted but never divorced, and, at 82, he had reunited with his childhood sweetheart, Mildred Miller, who became his caregiver. He and Mildred attended Powellville Continued on Page 2 Page 2 | Coastal Hospice News Ask Dr. Waris Medical Director Ask Dr. Waris is a regular feature of Coastal Hospice News. A: People who die at home experience a greater sense of peace in their final days and hours than they would in a hospital, with no greater pain, according to findings published in the British journal BMC Medicine. Their relatives also experience less grief in the months following their passing. To die at home, both the patient and their family must be on board with the decision, the study said, and also have strong support from a hospice provider experienced in home-based care. Being at home during one’s final days can help a person take solace in the life they lived. In addition, the patient is surrounded by the smells, the familiarity, the comfort, the love, the things they’ve helped to create, the garden they’ve built — all of this is around them. These things create a sense of accomplishment, nurturing and caring. In the study, relatives reported the people who died at home experienced no more pain than those who died receiving hospital care. In addition, dying at home appeared to help the people left behind. Relatives reported less intense grief when the patient died at home, even months following their death. Bereaved relatives might receive some comfort from the fact that the patient died more peacefully. They also may have been able to spend more time with the person in a familiar setting, helping them achieve a greater sense of closure. However, dying at home requires that the patient clearly express the desire to do so, and often requires the family to support that decision, the study found. That means people need to have end-of-life discussions sooner rather than later with loved ones, and make their wishes clear. Don’t wait too long to have these conversations. There’s nothing worse than waiting until you’re in crisis, because then it’s so easy to misinterpret things. Health care professionals who are skilled in end-of-life care can help facilitate these discussions. The social workers at Coastal Hospice are experienced in guiding patients and their families through end-oflife discussions. Continued from Page 1 Navy veteran proud of his service Methodist Church and often drove to Salisbury to eat at a favorite restaurant. On Dick’s first stay at Coastal Hospice at the Lake, volunteer and fellow veteran David Duitscher took him on a sightseeing tour of the walking trail around Johnson’s Pond, with Dave pushing Dick in a wheelchair. When we talked with them in their home, both Dick and Mildred were enthusiastic about the support they were receiving from Coastal Hospice. Dick smiled for the camera. “I feel good,” he said. “No aches or pains.” “The hospice people have been wonderful, wonderful,” Mildred said. “A volunteer comes and sits with him once a week. Courtney (Gum, hospice social worker) encouraged me to leave him for a couple of hours at a time to see how he got along by himself. He did just fine.” Dick added, “Pernell (Seawright, hospice aide) comes three days a week and gives me a bath. They’re all first-class people. All of them.” Dick had many careers in his life: chicken farmer for 34 years, first superintendent at Assateague Island State Park, construction representative with George, Miles & Buhr for 37 years. But first, he was a sailor. Dick enlisted in the Navy in 1951 and by the time he was honorably discharged in 1955, he was a Boatswain Mate, 2nd Class on the USS Orion, a submarine tender. “I chose the Navy because I didn’t want to sleep in a foxhole,” he said. “It was a good choice.” Dick remained in the Navy reserve for four more years. He was proud of his time serving the country, and shared a photo of himself as a young sailor on a torpedo retriever. Mildred brought out Dick’s old navy blue wool dress uniform with the square sailor color and white embroidered stars. For his photo, Dick asked for his Powellville VFW hat. Mildred covered him with the American flag blanket he received from Coastal Hospice to honor his military service, part of the “We Honor Veterans” program in place at Coastal Hospice. The King’s Kids of Christ United Methodist Church sang at the Veterans’ Day cerremonies at Deer’s Head Hospital. We Honor Veterans program makes every day Veterans’ Day Coastal Hospice’s commitment to veterans doesn’t begin or end with Veterans’ Day. We are a member of the We Honor Veterans Program through the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, the Veteran Service Providers Network, and the VA-Hospice Partnership. On Veteran’s Day this year, one veteran whom we recognized for his service told us, “You know this is going to last for months. This won’t just make the veterans feel good today. It will give them a reason to go on.” We hold special Veterans’ Day ceremonies throughout our service area, at Chesapeake Woods, Anchorage Nursing and Rehabilitation, Salisbury Genesis and Deer’s Head Hospital. On Nov. 11, veteran hospice patients and Compass clients each received certificates, pins and lap blankets delivered to them personally. At the Deer’s Head ceremony this year, the event included speakers, music, certificates of recognition and Veterans’ Day readings. Howard Travers 15 years: Rochelle Corbin Not pictured: Susan Walsh 10 years: (clockwise from top left) Judy Gilliam Judy Hunt-Harris Alane Capen (Not pictured: Je’Nelle Brown) Coastal Hospice volunteer Pat Westcott, 79, of Pocomoke City was recently given the “Volunteer Spirit of Worcester County Award” by the Worcester County Commissioners at their monthly meeting. Westcott fulfilled the county’s nomination requirement that “the nominated volunteer must benefit citizens and have a positive influence that addresses a community problem or enhances the quality of life in Worcester County.” Volunteer coordinator Judy Hunt-Harris chose to nominate Westcott because she has been a patient care volunteer with Coastal Hospice for 23 years, visiting patients in their homes or in nursing homes where she listens to stories, holds a hand, and makes a connection with a person nearing the end of life who needs to know that someone truly cares. Westcott became interested in hospice while she was teaching. Two of her students became terminally ill — one with a brain tumor, the other with cancer. She saw how the children and families suffered without support. After witnessing the struggle the children went through and hearing a talk by former Coastal Hospice president Marion Keenan, she became dedicated to the hospice concept. Westcott says she is fulfilled by the connection she makes with the patients she visits. “For me, it’s a connection that both parties need,” she says. “It’s the ability to come in and make a new friend and develop a relationship. The quality of life for both of us becomes much better. Sometimes I think the volunteer gets much more from the visits than the patient does.” She also cares for the caregivers she visits, who are often forgotten. “I always ask them how they are doing? Sometimes we forget how hard it is.” Westcott strongly believes that retirees need to stay active. “You’ve been involved your whole life and need to stay involved so you don’t become isolated.” 5 years: (clockwise from top left) Amy Farozic Caitlin Jones Rev.
