Season’s Greetings
Welcome to the final edition of the Hockey WA Bulletin.
On behalf of the Board and staff of Hockey WA, we would like
to wish you, your family and loved ones all a safe and joyous
festive season.
Hockey WA thanks all of the Life Members, staff, volunteers,
committee members, umpires, coaches, club administrators,
players, parents and the wider hockey community for all of
their efforts in 2015. Hockey would not be where it is without
you, so thank you.
Office Closure Dates
Whilst 2015 is coming to a close, 2016 looks to be an exciting
and prosperous one for the Association. Hockey WA is
embarking on a new five year Startegic Plan, which can be
viewed on our website.
We hope you all have a safe and joyous festive season.
Hockey WA advises that the office located at Perth Hockey
Stadium will be closed from Thursday 17th December at
5:00pm and will re-open on Monday 4th January 2016.
The Olympic Games in Rio will be a great opportunity to
showcase Hockey as a sport and into the mainstream of
Australia sporting conscious. With several WA athletes in
contention for selection, this will no doubt be an exciting time.
The major highlight in the events calendar for next year will be
the Australian Hockey League. It was recently announced that
Hockey WA will host both the Men’s and Women’s Australian
Hockey League, as well as the Boys and Girls Under 13
Australian Hockey Championships. Be sure to mark the dates
of 29 September - 8 October in your new calendars for 2016
as you will not want to miss any of the action from the WA
Thundersticks and WA Diamonds AHL campaigns.
Christmas is a time of togetherness, joy and celebration and
we certainly hope that these sentiments can be enjoyed by all
families connected with our great game over this period.
I hope you all stay safe over the holiday season and we look
forward to seeing you all around the grounds in 2016.
Save The Date - Rego Day
Junior registration day will be held on Saturday 13th February,
2016 across Australia. Keep your eyes peeled on the Hockey
WA website in the new year for more information.
To find a club for the 2016 season, head to the National Find A
Club page through the Hockey WA website.

Construction Works Surrounding PHS
Hockey WA advises of the current development works taking
place at Curtin University campus surrounding Perth Hockey
Stadium.
For those travelling to Perth Hockey Stadium, Curtin University
will ensure access to the facility at all times, however, you may
experience some minor delays on your travel in and out of
the stadium. To access Perth Hockey Stadium, you will need
to enter and exit via Hayman Road. The entrance from Kent
Street has been blocked off.
What’s happening?
If you have visited Perth Hockey Stadium over the past week,
you may have noticed some significant works undertaken
around the stadium.
Proposed Map of Petrth Hockey Stadium surroundings at Curtin
University campus once the development works have been completed.
Kookaburras Win World League
The Kookaburras have won the World League Finals in
India earlier this month, defeating Belgium 2-1 in the final.
Congratulations to our WA representatives Fergus Kavanagh,
Tyler Lovell, Trent Mitton and Aran Zalewski.
Curtin University plans to transform itself into an urban
knowledge centre over the next 15 to 20 years. Known as
Greater Curtin, the vision mixes traditional university facilities
with a diverse range of enterprises such as student residential
and visitor accommodation, small businesses, entertainment
and recreational facilities.
The revamped campus is intended to operate like an urban
village with plenty of spaces and places for people to connect
with each other - to live, study, work and play.
To bring the Greater Curtin vision to life, a number of new
streets are required to connect the campus and to create the
spaces necessary for the village to grow.
Meanwhile, Ashleigh Nelson and Kathryn Slattery were
involved with the Hockeyroos World League Finals campaign,
that finished in 6th.
Amongst a host of changes upon completion, a new main
street will run south in between Perth Hockey Stadium and
Curtin Stadium. In addition, a new bus interchange will
bring Transperth services to the centre of the campus area,
improving public transport access to Curtin and Perth Hockey
Stadium.
At the top right of this page is a map of what Curtin University
campus surrounding Perth Hockey Stadium will look like once
completed.

RAC Sports Star Awards - Official of the Year
Congratulations to Tammy Standley, who was a top three
finalist at the RAC Sports Star Awards earlier this month.
Unfortunantly she did not win ‘Official of the Year’ award but it
is a fantastic achievement to be selected as a finalist.
Tammy has had a whirlwind past 12 months as a Technical
Official and Judge.
Some of her International event appointments over the past
12 months include;
- Women’s Indoor Hockey World Cup (Judge)
- Men’s Indoor Hockey World Cup (Judge)
- Hockeyroos v Korea Test Series (Technical Official)
- Men’s Rio Olympics Test Event (Judge)
- Women’s Rio Olympics Test Event (Judge)
Tammy has been selected as a Judge for the Olympic Games,
and will join fellow West Australian officials Melissa Trivic and
Murray Grime over in Rio.
Well done Tammy!
Off the back of the recent announcement that Perth will
host the 2016 Australian Hockey League men’s and women’s
tournaments, the Thundersticks announce a pre-season
squad and teams to play in a series versus the touring Chinese
provincial team Liaoning through January and February.
The squad is reflective of performances from athletes across
2015 with an eye to developing, assessing and supporting a
broader base of identified athletes who are potential 2016
selections or beyond.
Liaoning Province will play 5 games against the Thundersticks,
3 games against a Thundersticks Development team and 2
games against the WA Country senior team. MTL Clubs are also
being organised to play preparation games for the key fixtures
of the tour. If your club would be interested in this opportunity,
please contact Karla Barrett, karla.barrett@hockeywa.org.au.
(See schedule below).
Dean Evans (Assistant Coach ) said - “It’s important that we
continue to provide opportunities to a broader group of
athletes within our system and also reward performance and
improvement. This series will give us a great opportunity to
fulfil both of those objectives and to start making inroads
into our preparations for 2016. Having the capacity to play
two Thundersticks teams in the series and to provide an
opportunity for the WA state country team will allow a large
number of senior as well as up and coming talent to be
exposed to high level hockey early in the year.”
This squad symbolises a starting point for the Thundersticks
2016 campaign, with the squad to be updated again through
the MTL season before tournament preparations begin in
June/July.
With the National players not available, this will also allow
the Thundersticks to provide leadership opportunities and
more responsibility across the group. Liaoning Province is a
quality opposition, so the test for this extended playing group
is believed to be significant especially considering the lead in
post-Christmas. The majority of the targeted playing group are
available which is promising considering the time of year.
“We are looking forward to the early opportunity to work on
some identified areas from this years AHL and on continuing
to strengthen our culture whilst also assessing the progress of
our identified list.” said Evans
Tammy Standley (left) with her dad and fellow technical official, Ian.

Series Schedule:
Thundersticks
Saturday 23rd January 6.30-8.00pm
“We have done a thorough review of the 2015 campaign and
whilst we need to improve in a number of areas we are very
clear what they are and will endeavour to strengthen the
program through selections, development of our playing list
and through a targeted approach towards developing our
game plan and our priority development areas.” Jason Butcher
With the tournament in Perth this also represents an
opportunity for the Thundersticks to set up an expanded
support system for the team, with plans in place to continue to
bring the influence of past Thundersticks back into the fold and
to empower the playing group to drive the program forward.
A number of support coaches will be utilised across the series
including support and mentorship for the state country team
which includes a number of ex Thundersticks, prominent
MTL coaches and state junior coaches, this will be a fantastic
development opportunity and information sharing experience.
“The strength of the last two years has revolved around an
exceptional group of support people and from the leadership
within the playing group, we understand this is the core of the
Thundersticks strength and will continue to work hard to put
this at the forefront of everything we do. We have a priority
focus on creating systems and processes and a culture that
empowers the playing group and facilitates influence from the
the past.” said Butcher
Staffing for 2016 will be announced post the series with an eye
to maintain continuity with the current group and to expand
on specialist support within the program.
