At the heart of any educational enterprise are students and teachers. A meaningful measure of institutional success must begin with them. At Urban it is the generous and authentic engagement of students and teachers alike in the learning process that forms the core of the school’s mission: igniting a passion for learning. Urban is proud of its outstanding faculty who are nationally known for their exceptional teaching. Urban teachers are steeped in their disciplines, enthusiastic about their subjects, and expert at the ways that students learn. As a school that is in high demand, Urban is also fortunate to enroll students who are bright, creative, diverse and talented. Urban’s current strategic plan, Vision 2013: Creating A Sustainable Future, reflects the school’s commitment to institutional improvement and constitutes its roadmap for the future. Since its approval in 2008, Urban has made considerable progress implementing its six strategic initiatives: education for the 21st century (including environmental sustainability, enhanced global awareness and service learning); diversity and inclusion; accessibility; facilities; working at Urban; and financial sustainability. In 2009-10 the school continued to add to its course offerings with an environmental focus, aiming to ensure that we graduate students who are eco-literate and wise stewards of the earth’s resources. Our efforts to become a sustainable campus have been focused on conserving resources, maximizing operational efficiency, decreasing our overall environmental impact, and securing a LEED-EBOM (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design – Existing Building Operations and Maintenance) certification, which would make Urban one of the first schools in the country to achieve this designation. Urban also continued to make progress toward another key goal of Vision 2013— ensuring accessibility to a broad range of students and families in the Bay Area, regardless of their ability to meet the full cost of tuition. In 2009-10, the school awarded $2 million in financial aid (approximately 20 percent of our operating budget) to 26 percent of our students. As part of our education for the 21st century initiative, the school also revised the implementation of its service learning program, incorporating more multicultural education and emphasizing strategic problem-solving and leadership development. A new course called Identity and Ethnic Studies was launched for all incoming freshman to provide the foundation for their subsequent work in community service, as well as the foundation for building a more inclusive and equitable school community. The foundation for Urban’s many successes this past year rests on the incredibly generous support and involvement of parents, trustees, alumni and friends of the school. We are pleased to report that the school had another outstanding year of fundraising, with contributed income reaching a new record of $1,118,000 through the combination of the Annual Fund and the Auction. We extend a special thanks to the 2009-10 Annual Fund Co-Chairs Charles Lesem and Greg Cohelan, as well as to the Auction Chair Jane Wolf, for their vigorous and dedicated leadership. Urban also enhanced its long-term financial sustainability with a reinvigorated Class of 2010 endowment drive. Students, parents and grandparents of the Class of 2010 set the bar high for their Class Fund, raising $140,000 toward Urban’s endowment—a record for the school since launching senior endowment funds in 2000. Congratulations to the students in the Class of 2010 and parent leaders for their success. As outlined under the facilities initiative in Vision 2013, the Board of Trustees is actively continued on page 4 THE URBAN ANNUAL REPORT 09|10 [3] Report from Head of School and Board of Trustees Chair 2009-10 Board of Trustees continued from page 3 pursuing the acquisition and renovation of an additional property in the neighborhood to meet our needs for a larger gym and theater. We are pleased to report that nearly $1 million was secured in 2009-10 toward this effort and our endowment, and we look forward to keeping you apprised of our progress in this exciting new opportunity for the school. In closing, we want to acknowledge our parent volunteers who are the backbone of the school. We are especially grateful for the hard work of the Parent Board, led so capably by co-chairs Frish Brandt and Diane Welch. Additionally, we want to thank our outgoing trustees, Bing Gordon, Sara Hendrickson, Anna Lee, Jamienne Studley and Leslie Winick, who brought tremendous vision, stewardship and leadership to the Board of Trustees. We are indeed fortunate that so many individuals have chosen to invest so generously in Urban and for the faith they have in the promise of this special school. We extend our thanks to all of our supporters, and hope you share our pride as you read this 2009-10 Annual Report. But in the world that we inhabit—those of us who aren’t teachers or students—we have the opportunity to embrace high school once more, this time as parents. Depending on where you are in your Urban lifecycle, you may or may not remember all of the questions, and some of the answers that brought you here. Today I am writing this note as a graduated parent looking back at what Urban is and was. If you are still in the thick of your Urban experience, my council to you would be: dig in, swim deep, throw your arms wide and expand and explore because before you know it you will be on the other side of it. This is it. When I graduated from high school my friend David wrote in my yearbook, “High School is not a microcosm of the world, it IS the world.” If we have any aspiration of raising a generation of involved adults, we ourselves must be involved. If we have any hope to encourage community building, we ourselves must be community builders. The Urban Parents’ Association is designed for this purpose—to give us all a place to experience high school without our students watching us….and without us watching them. Toward this goal, last year Diane Welch and I, as Co-Presidents of the Parent Board, brought the daily life, challenges and highlights of Urban to the Parents’ Association meetings via presentations by teachers and administrators—the very people who are crafting our children’s high school education. It is in this way that we could experience what this education is about, what we all work so hard to provide to our teenagers, and why our participation matters. These presentations informed us and encouraged us to volunteer and to support the many efforts that keep the school vibrant and on the forefront of education, and in the process, we met other parents with whom we could share this experience, brief as it is. I am deeply grateful to all the volunteers on Urban’s Parent Board who took on leadership roles and ensured that our meetings and events throughout the year were inclusive, accessible, welcoming and fun, including the Faculty and Staff Appreciation Events, Auction, Athletics Banquet, All-School Picnic, Parent Class Potlucks and more. In addition, parents came forward to support each other through Diversity and Inclusion and Care and Concern, as well as new, informal class coffees for parents on Haight Street. From helping with Open Houses to Commencement and everything in between, Urban parents are an important part of the life of the school. Urban grows impressive young adults who go out into the world taking each their own piece (peace) of Urban with them. Being an involved parent is your chance to be part of the future – your future, your child’s future, our shared future. Thank you to all the Urban parents, past, present and future, who together shape this incredible school and community. In addition, gifts to the Annual Fund support critical work toward implementing and achieving our strategic plan, Vision 2013: Creating a Sustainable Future. Here are just a few of the many ways your support directly made a difference to the students, teachers and programs at The Urban School each and every day. Accessibility: Urban’s Vision 2013 strategic plan calls for increased accessibility, and toward that, Urban awarded $2 million in financial aid (nearly 20 percent of our operating budget) to 26 percent of our student body, a new record for the school. Academic Programs: We continually strive to make Urban the best possible teaching and learning environment. This year Urban added new classes to our ever-evolving and dynamic curriculum, including Urban Advanced Studies (UAS) The Naturalist as Writer and UAS History of South Asia: Part 2, as part of our efforts to increase the profile of environmental and global studies—another goal of Vision 2013. Urban also focused on revising our award-winning, four-year Service Learning Program. A new six-week course was created for the freshman class on Identity and Ethnic Studies to provide them with a solid foundation and framework to become self-aware, thoughtful and engaged citizens in our world, and to prepare them for active and meaningful volunteerism in the greater community as Urban students and alumni. [6] THE URBAN ANNUAL REPORT 09|10 2009-10 ANNUAL FUND VOLUNTEERS Athletics: Teams are stronger than ever and school spirit is at an all-time high at Urban. A few sporting highlights of the year include: • Sixty-four percent of Urban students participated on at least one team; • Urban’s lacrosse team, only in its second year at the school, won its first-ever playoff game; • The boys volleyball team qualified for the playoffs for the first time ever; • Girls softball was the season champ and advanced to the NCS semi-finals; and • Both boys and girls basketball teams qualified for the NCS tournament—the first time in several years that both teams advanced that far in the same season. Go Blues! Teachers: Supporting our incredible teachers with a broad array of professional development opportunities is another key initiative of Vision 2013. This year, faculty pursued master’s degrees in their disciplines at Stanford and Columbia, and nearly a third of the faculty participated in collaborative curriculum development during the summer. Additionally, teachers attended and presented at conferences both locally and nationally, providing them with opportunities to network; to learn about new teaching strategies, digital tools and assessment methods; and to remain well-informed and up-to-date regarding future trends and challenges in education. Community: Another goal for the school has been to build and sustain an inclusive and welcoming environment for all our students, staff and faculty. Both the Board of Trustees and Parent Board Diversity Committee have dedicated themselves to a new Inquiry of Equity program, which seeks to ensure that everyone feels a part of this incredible Urban community. A very symbolic representation of the Urban community is exemplified in our 96 percent current parent participation in the 2009-10 Annual Fund—a new high for Urban in recent years, and the highest participation rate of peer Bay Area independent high schools. From all of us at Urban, thank you for your important role in helping the school achieve our goals with your investment and belief in our programs, students and teachers. We would like to extend our deep appreciation to all the volunteers who worked on the Annual Fund, and especially to our fantastic parent co-chairs, Greg Cohelan and Charles Lesem, as well as our wonderful Class Captains. Their dedication and leadership made a tremendous impact on the success of this year’s campaign. Additionally, 15 alums stepped up to offer matching dollars to encourage broader alumni support. The 100 for $100 campaign was historic for Urban. Not only did 100+ generous alums contribute nearly $22,500, but their contributions represent the most amount ever raised by the alumni community in a single year. We are deeply grateful to all our alumni donors for their inspiring support and participation. This annual event is always a fantastic party and a wonderful gathering of our community in support of Urban’s Financial Aid Program. Through the generosity of our underwriters, in-kind donations, donors and auction bidders, this year’s event and Online Auction raised $264,000. This year marked our greatest success in the Online Auction as we engaged more Urban bidders and expanded our fundraising reach beyond the Urban community. Guests began their evening with complimentary valet parking, delicious hors d’oeuvres and cocktails. After bidding on Super Silent wine items that included collections of rare wines and double magnums of Napa’s finest, guests enjoyed the musical talents of Urban student musicians in the main dining room. The exciting Live Auction took place during a delicious dinner paired with lovely wines, followed by non-stop dancing to Bay Area favorite Pride & Joy! The success of Urban’s Blue Velvet Underground would not have been possible without the support of our community, and we extend our deepest appreciation to everyone who supported and participated in this year’s event. We especially would like to recognize this year’s auction chair, Jane Wolf, and the entire Auction Planning Committee for their leadership and commitment, which ensured the event’s success. Also, we extend a debt of gratitude to the many parent and student volunteers who enthusiastically dedicated their time and talent to staging this wonderful event. In September 2009, Karen and Mike established The McCune Family Fund, a named endowment fund in support of financial aid, by designating Urban as a beneficiary of their trust to receive the annual payout of seven percent to support tuition assistance. Karen is the Co-President of Urban’s Parents’ Association and Mike is a member of Urban’s Board of Trustees. They have two daughters, Louise (’09) who is currently attending Columbia, and Emma (’12) McCune. [ 24 ] THE URBAN ANNUAL REPORT 09|10 Brisen: Thank you again for your visionary gift. Can you give us some background on your CRT and how you came about to include Urban as a beneficiary? Mike: Over 20 years ago, we established a CRT that provides a tax-exempt annual payout for discretionary use and flexible assignment of the remaining assets upon our death (see side bar). We decided to name Urban as the beneficiary of a portion of this CRT and a corresponding percentage of the annual payout. Over a long period of time, these payouts will add up to a sizable amount and, at some point in the future, Urban will also have full access to the designated proceeds from the corpus of the trust. Brisen: Had you considered planned giving philanthropically before creating this trust? Or was this something new? It’s a really creative way to think about supporting charities. Mike: We set up the trust with named beneficiaries, but hadn’t given thought to use it in an active manner, such as this, until recently. Since doing this for Urban, we have made similar planned gifts for a few other organizations. Karen: We thought of naming Urban as a beneficiary in our CRT in response to a conversation that we had with Mark [Salkind] and Glenn [Shannon]. We were motivated to make a significant gift, and wanted to do something in the present as well as in the future. By giving Urban an annual gift through the trust, we can make an immediate difference, and by naming Urban as a beneficiary, we can ensure that Urban’s endowment is supported later on as well. Brisen: What inspired you to create an endowed family fund with a focus on accessibility? Mike: A key interest of ours is that our children and our children’s friends grow up in environments that are diverse and inclusive. We live in San Francisco because it allows that value to shine. We also see how the economic pressures in the school system, especially the private school system, are making it harder and harder to achieve diversity and inclusion. So, we want to do anything that we can do to help enhance accessibility in the way of scholarship assistance. Karen: As for making it a family fund, we want our girls to have a sense of contribution to the school and to its legacy in the future, since they have been direct beneficiaries of its excellence. Brisen: Why do you think supporting Urban’s endowment, and in particular endowment for accessibility, is important? Karen: We want the school to be there for our children’s children. Mike: We also want the school to reflect the diversity of San Francisco in as many ways as possible. One way to enable that is to provide financial assistance for those who cannot afford it. Looking at the projected demographics of families and incomes in San Francisco, it’s clear that the student body of the school will become more and more homogeneous in many ways, unless outreach efforts and scholarship assistance programs are in place. Brisen: Changing direction a bit…what impact has Urban had on you and your daughters? a label or identity. It gives students the freedom to be both athletic and to try something musical. Karen: Well, we believe it has really Brisen: Now that Louise is an alumna, has your perspective on Urban and/or her experience and education here changed? helped them discover who they are as adolescents and emerging young adults. And I love the Urban parent community. Families who choose a school like Urban value intellectual curiosity and exploration. That appeals to us. Mike: It’s taught them how to take in the environment, how to integrate it, and how to form thoughts, opinions and directions in ways that I don’t think would have otherwise been possible. It’s great. Personally, I’ve found that the more I learn about Urban, the more I like it and the more I appreciate being a part of it. Brisen: And your daughters have done so many different things, from sports to the arts, it seems like they have participated in a broad array of Urban’s offerings. Karen: Yes. We had no idea that Louise was so artistically inclined when she started. And Emma is playing the trumpet…who would have known!? Brisen: What do you think it was about Urban that empowered and inspired them to branch out in those new directions? Mike: I think Urban allows for self-expres- sion to be there and to be appreciated. By virtue of the fact that everybody is encouraged to participate in academic classes, in the arts and in sports, it allows students to take a range of risks that they might not otherwise take…in discussions and in actions and in choices about what to do and how to spend their time. I’ve really enjoyed watching our girls develop that sense of exploration. It’s allowed them to assert their own sense of personality and direction, without us telling them what to do. Karen: I also value the fact that Karen: I think we are more focused on how they can both stay engaged after they leave, which is one of the reasons we established a family fund to which they can contribute over time. I know Louise still feels very attached to the community. Mike: Louise is much more on her own in college, and she is making choices and big decisions about what to do in a very thoughtful manner. This gives me great comfort, and I’m grateful to Urban for giving her some of the tools to get through this time. I hadn’t really thought about that as being part of her high school education until now. What is a Charitable Remainder Trust? A CRT is a deferred/planned gift that enables a donor to claim a charitable income tax deduction when transferring assets to establish the trust. A CRT can provide tax-exempt fixed payment amounts (Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust), or fixed percentage amounts (Charitable Remainder Unitrust) each year during the term of the trust to whomever the donor chooses to receive the income, including the donor. When the trust ends, either based on life or a number of years, the remaining assets in the trust are given to the designated charity or charities of the donor’s choosing. If you are interested in learning more about CRTs or other planned giving options, please contact your lawyer or financial advisor. the culture at Urban strives to avoid having students be pigeonholed into THE URBAN ANNUAL REPORT 09|10 [ 25 ] Endowment and Planned Giving Endowment Giving Building a strong endowment is the best way to ensure that today’s students, as well as future generations, benefit from Urban’s extraordinary teachers, outstanding programs and diverse community. Below you will find information on our giving programs and some of the methods by which you can make a gift. Cash or Credit Card Current gifts are always appreciated and are tax deductible to the fullest extent as permitted by law. Urban accepts American Express, MasterCard and Visa. Online Giving Giving is easy and secure on our website at www.urbanschool.org/giving. Matching Gifts Many companies will match or multiply their employees’ donations to Urban. To see if your company qualifies, contact the Human Resources Department, Community Relations Department or company foundation. Securities If you hold securities that would incur a tax on capital gains if sold, your outright gift to Urban could mean significant savings. You obtain a tax deduction for the full market value of the gift, and you may avoid a tax on the increase in value. Memorial and Honor Gifts Urban gratefully recognizes gifts made in memory or in honor of friends, family or faculty members, or to acknowledge a birthday, graduation or other significant event. eScrip eScrip is an easy fundraising program that everyone in the community can participate in. Sign up your grocery club cards, credit cards, and debit/ATM cards and a portion of your purchases at participating businesses will be donated back to Urban. To join, go to www.urbanschool.org/support. Planned Giving Opportunities Planned Giving offers donors a variety of vehicles to make meaningful gifts to Urban’s endowment through bequests, trusts, life insurance policies, retirement plans and more. In many cases donors may also receive significant tax and income benefits. Urban Legacy Society The Urban Legacy recognizes and honors parents, alumni, grandparents and friends who have included the school in their estate plans. Urban’s Planned Giving Program provides a variety of ways to make a planned gift that does not deplete lifetime assets and, in some cases, can furnish additional income and significant tax deductions. Below is a list of options you may wish to consider when making a gift to Urban. Bequests A gift provided in your will may be a percentage of your estate, the residual of the estate, a certain item or a specific dollar amount. Estate taxes may be reduced by a bequest to Urban. Charitable Remainder Trust This trust provides either a fixed or variable income for you and your family. Part of the trust qualifies for an income tax deduction and at the death of the last beneficiary, the assets of the trust are distributed to Urban. Charitable Lead Trust This trust allows you to pass on assets to family members with significant estate and gift tax savings while allowing Urban to benefit from the income for the duration of the trust. Gifts of Real Estate A gift of real estate provides considerable tax benefits. You also have the option of retaining the right to occupy the property for life or even to receive the income it generates. Gifts of Life Insurance or Pension Benefits A gift of life insurance allows you to contribute a previously acquired policy that may no longer be needed for its initial purpose and realize tax benefits. Urban may also be named as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy, company pension or profit-sharing plan, or of a private fund such as an IRA, Keogh or tax-sheltered annuity. We appreciate your interest in and support of The Urban School of San Francisco. Your attorney or financial planner can provide additional information on how these ways of giving apply to your specific situation. If you are interested in learning more about these gift opportunities for you and Urban, please contact the Development Office at 415 626 2919.
