From the Principal Late Pass
From the Principal Can you believe Term 1 2014 has come to a close! Thanks to Lara Primary School Friends for arranging the visit by the Easter Bunny last week – some students were heard to say ‘He’s gone back down his hole underground – and it’s a very big hole!’ It’s been a great term, with lots of exciting learning happening. Already it seems such a long time ago that our prep students arrived in their crisp new uniforms ready to embark on their learning journey. Now, if you walk into their classrooms you find students who understand the routines of school, are engaged in daily reading, writing and numeracy tasks. They’re excited about reading books to others, learning new words, stretching their counting and number sense, and sharing stories they have written. Issue No 5 03/04/2014 Term 1 finishes @ 2.30pm. Term 2 commences Tuesday 22nd April. Wednesday 23rd April some LG students are off to the Shrine in Melbourne. th Thursday 24 April School Cross Country. Our 3/4 students have spent time at Serendip Sanctuary. We always hear very positive stories from our students, as they engage with the rangers and animals at the sanctuary, and stretch their IT capabilities in our classroom there. If you’ve not taken the time to visit the sanctuary I am confident Marcia O’Brien and the class teachers would appreciate your support while your child’s class is visiting. I trust you have followed along with the learning in your child’s classroom by visiting their Blog. You can access the Blogs from our website – under the student tab - http://www.laraps.vic.edu.au/students-blog-spot Wishing everyone a most enjoyable break with their family, and hope Easter Bunny visits your house! Thanks Rosie Noonan Thank You Many local families and visitors had a great day at the Lara Food & Wine Festival on Sunday 23rd March. In appreciation of the generosity of these Lara Primary School helpers, the Food & Wine Festival Committee is donating $400 towards the Serendip program. Marcia O’Brien The Rotary Junior Community Award (also known as the Rotary Challenge) The Rotary Challenge has been running at Lara Primary School for a number of years and has been supported by the Geelong Rotary Club. The program is specifically designed for students in their final year at primary school. To achieve the award students are required to complete a range of activities in the following four areas: community service (volunteer work), social experience (commemoration, attend a meeting, learn about different cultures), physical recreation and develop a new skill. The award helps students grow as a young person and encourages then to become a valuable member of the community. This year there are six students who are already demonstrating that they will be great members of their community as they work towards achieving their award. As a school community we wish Lexi, Seb, Joakim, Kayne, Jack and Jade all the best in their endeavours. Midfielder Allen Christensen and defender Cameron Guthrie took time out of their busy schedule to make an appearance and talk all things leadership with our year 5/6's. We heard about an elite footballers' tough training regime, their diet and the dedication needed to stay commited to achieving your goals. There was plenty of time for question and answers and of course to score a couple of autographs! LG Team News from Jenny and the Team As everyone is saying, l can’t believe Term 1 has come to an end….. We have 6 new preps this year and with the guidance of both staff and other children they have settled in very well. At Outside School Hours Care to improve the childrens confidence, self-esteem and respect for each other we encourage them to stand up in front of everyone and tell us all about things they are interested in and special toys or items they treasure or find interesting. Our new little preps have been very eager to have their turn. This activity shows me just how much the children appreciate the fact they are able to attend and interact at Serendip and just how much information they learn about endangered species and the environment. We are lucky to have such a brillant resource so close to school. Cooking with Lucy over the last couple of weeks has been very popular, especially with Jade as she enjoys making and eating healthy apple cake. Megan and most of the others really enjoy the truffles and scones. The children are a bit worried as Lucy is going away for a couple of weeks and the cooking activities will be left up to me! The standards are sure to drop, or may even disappear for the couple of weeks. I am sure they will appreciate Lucy’s return. I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday and look forward to their stories when the children return. Judy-Anne Gillett Community Noticeboard Is Juice Healthy? There seems to be a common misconception that fruit juice is a healthy, low-sugar alternative to soft drinks or cordials. However juice has as much sugar as soft drinks and health experts are warning consumers to limit consumption or risk health problems. Apple juice is no more than’’sugar syrup'', nutritionists say. ''It's just like drinking soft drink,'' Dietitians Association of Australia spokeswoman Kellie Bilinski said. Nutritionist Rosemary Stanton said consumers eat the equivalent of five large apples in one single-serve box of juice, which is far too much sugar. ''You would never take in that much sugar naturally,'' she said. “People think, 'oh it's good for me', but I would much prefer people drank water and ate a single piece of fruit.'' In addition, much of the goodness in fruit (fibre, for example) is not found in fruit juice, or is only there in very small amounts. When children are thirsty, we should teach them to drink water. And we should keep cool, fresh water available. If you feel you really must have juice: make a rule that it is for breakfast only; and then reduce the strength (dilute it with water); and the frequency (have it less often). BASEBALL CLUB LOOKING FOR PLAYERS OF ALL AGES REGISTRATION AND COME AND TRY DAY 26TH APRIL2014 CONTACT JARROD FRAIM email: jarrodfraim@lcwater.com.au or phone 0439 447 806 FOR MORE INFORMATION National director at the Heart Foundation, Dr Rob Grenfell, agrees that fruit juices should be considered as a rare ''special treat'' rather than a daily routine. Save your teeth, save your health, save your money! Choose water instead.
