SABA President Marty Truss honored LRS Director Sylvia Hernandez (left) and Assistant Melinda Garza (right) for their loyal
service to SABA with awards presented at the May 26, 2016 luncheon. This year marks Hernandez’s 40th work anniversary and
Garza’s 15th.
SABA launches project for integrated database and new website
The San Antonio Bar Association
(SABA) broke virtual ground in June
2016 on Raising the Bar, a major technology initiative that will streamline
the customer service experience for
SABA’s members and the general public. Raising the Bar, which will continue
into fall, will bring SABA systems upto-date with technological advances
and increase the ease of access to community information, membership benefits and the local legal directory.
SABA’s Lawyer Referral Service
(LRS) is one of the main beneficiaries of
Raising the Bar. The LRS is a community and consumer protection service
that provides quality attorney referrals.
It’s been more than 15 years since the
LRS has upgraded its attorney-client
database. The improvements to the LRS
system will allow staff to process referrals and account updates rapidly, thus
increasing the volume of clients LRS
can serve.
The project as a whole will consolidate LRS processes with other SABA
and SABA-related systems, including
membership and the San Antonio Bar
Foundation. An integrated system will
greatly improve overall Bar customer
service and unify member communications. Raising the Bar also includes the
development of a new SABA website
that will bring member benefits and
community services to the forefront on
an easy-to-navigate web plane with mobile device optimization.
An $11,750 grant from the Texas
Bar Foundation helped fund the project. Since its inception in 1965, the Texas
Bar Foundation has awarded more than
$16 million in grants to law-related programs. Supported by members of the
State Bar of Texas, the Texas Bar Foundation is the nation’s largest charitably
funded bar foundation.

Don’t you wish you knew someone who regularly referred
well over half a million dollars in fee-generating legal work
per year? Don’t you wish your bar association offered you
something useful to your day-to-day practice of law? Well,
we do! In addition to the dozens of outstanding CLE opportunities, Brown Bag lunches, award-winning San Antonio
Lawyer magazine, monthly Subpoena, Law Week and Peacemakers, monthly networking CLE luncheons, CJP volunteer opportunities, the Family Fun Day and Chili Cook-off
and much more, a principal but often overlooked benefit of
SABA membership is the opportunity to participate in our
Lawyer Referral Service (LRS), which is undergoing some
exciting new changes this summer.
SABA has recently made a major investment in software
upgrades, part of our Raising the Bar initiative (see P. 1), to
improve our LRS client intake and matter tracking processes,
which will include automatic “instant email” referrals. We
expect these upgrades to be implemented in the coming
months, and, effective June 2016, you must be a member of
SABA to participate in the LRS program. If you haven’t previously been a member of LRS, there’s no better time than
now.
The Lawyer Referral Service is a valuable member benefit, but it is first and foremost a community and consumer protection service for
Bexar and surrounding
counties. LRS is a public service, providing
regular citizens access
to a qualified lawyer.
It is also a service to
our member attorneys to match them
with
pre-screened
clients.
to the

Bar
We are fortunate to have 40 years of consistent leadership from Sylvia Hernandez, Director of LRS. Sylvia manages the day-to-day operations, along with Melinda Garza
(who has been with SABA 15 years). They are responsible for
qualifying and growing the attorney pool and processing the
thousands of client matches per year.
Clients who contact LRS for a referral are informed LRS
attorneys are not free. LRS staff screen the calls; then, clients
are referred to LRS attorney members on a rotating basis according to the following criteria: area of law, geographical
location and language preference. LRS attorneys are not obligated to accept any case referred to them by the service. LRS
averages approximately 50 referrals per day.
If you are a member of SABA, in good standing with the
State Bar of Texas and can provide proof of insurance, you
are eligible for membership in SABA’s LRS program. In the
2015-16 bar year alone, LRS made thousands of referrals to
local lawyers that resulted in well over half a million dollars
in earned fees. LRS refers cases in all fields of law: administrative, bankruptcy, civil rights, collections, commercial,
corporation, criminal, deceptive trade practice/consumer,
estate/probate, entertainment, family, immigration, international, labor, landlord/tenant, malpractice, military, oil and
gas, patents and copyrights, personal injury, real estate, tax,
internet/computer, environmental, elder and securities.
To join LRS, you will need to submit an application satisfying the aforementioned requirements and pay LRS membership fees ($200 annually with a 10% fee from any fees you
receive from an LRS referred case).
For more information or to join LRS, contact Sylvia Hernandez at (210) 227-8822 or (210) 227-1853.

listed as a Rising Star.
Hilley has been happily married to

T
he San Antonio Bar Association
and SA Bar Foundation hosted
an expanded calendar of community
outreach activities celebrating Law Week
and reached more than 2,500 people including middle school, high school and
college-aged students, Bexar County
neighbors and legal professionals.
On April 27, a partnership program
of Color of Justice hosted more than
80 attendees for a day-long program at
Texas A&M-San Antonio featuring more
than 20 attorneys and judges. Led by the
National Association of Women Judges,
the Color of Justice Program is a national
outreach project to encourage girls and
students from underrepresented communities to study law. On April 28, SABA
distributed pocket-sized copies of the
U.S. Constitution to welcome 232 new
citizens at a Naturalization Ceremony
presided by U.S. Magistrate Judge Henry
Bemporad and featuring guest speaker
Justice Patricia Alvarez. Throughout the
first week of May, SABA and representatives from ten affinity bar associations
distributed copies of the US Constitution
for Jury Appreciation, reaching nearly
2,000 residents reporting for jury duty.
Exceptional high school Peer Mediators
from Taft High School were recognized
with a customized Courthouse Tour and
pizza party on May 6.
The highlight of the week was the
May 4 Law Week Luncheon and Award
Ceremony at the Briscoe Western Art
Museum with a sold-out crowd of nearly
400 guests.
Judge Edward Prado, Law Week
Committee Chair, opened the Luncheon
festivities, which included many distinguished awards.
Gerry Goldstein introduced our keynote speaker, Michael Morton, author of
Getting Life: An Innocent Man’s Journey
from Prison to Peace. It was an impactful
day reinforcing how important civic liberty scholars, activists and defenders are
to our nation’s liberties and freedom.
Let my 40 years of
experience work for
you.
